Kinzo wants to believe GOLDSMITH, his Fantasy Magic Image is Real. If it is Real, then BEATRICE can be reborn, and Bice can come back. But if the Fantasy isn't real, then thing keeping him Alive vanishes, and Kinzo goes back to the way he was before the War. Basically, Kinzo is casting a spell to make Beatrice the second, Beatrice the first, and make them the same person. And they are only the same if they are different human expressions of The BEATRICE.
I agree that his obsession with magic might've come from Beatrice, or at least partially. I headcanon that Beatrice could've been superstitious and believed in a higher power (maybe inspiring Kinzo to fund Fukuin, which seemed to have had always religious subtext). Kinzo also read Divina Comedia, and might've later reinterpreted it as having esoteric hidden meanings in the Western occult sense. Finally Rokkenjima itself was a demon's island.
It can be quite interesting to have a look at the heart of a character, Maria in this case. To be perfectly exact, these were called the Core Arcs, not really the Answer Arcs like in Higurashi. Giving you answers to some extent, but still leaving a few things to your personal interpretation ;)

i'm convinced the character of maria was written in a lab by a bunch of scientists specifically just to make me cry
Yes sir I am the lead on that scientific team and I can indeed confirm we intended to make you suffer
As a member of that team, i can confirm that we indeed intend to make you suffer

Lion has a quirk, butt pinching.
Well, with someone like Will, one cannot resist.
Though I am sure Lion has been accused before of sexual harassment.
Well... perhaps.
