Humminbird Helix Mega G2N Settings (Updates in Descripyion below)

  • Опубліковано 23 лют 2018
  • At 2:52 Surface Clutter is set at 5...I usually have it set between 2-3.
    At 3:26 Zoom Width is set to WIDE. That is for shallow water. I usually have that set to MEDIUM looking at structure in 15-20 FOW.
    At 5:50 I say Map Source should be set on Contour SD.... If you have a "Lakemaster Card", set the Map Source to "AUTO".
    This is every setting I have on both of my Humminbird Helix Mega G2N. These settings give great screen views. Now the Sensitivity and contrast will have to be tweaked to each individual situation. There is no one setting fits all in these two settings. But the factory setting of 10 seems to be the closest to that one setting fits all. If this does help anyone, please leave a comment and let me know. Thanks

      These settings are a starting point. They aren't set in stone, but they should give you a good start so that you can find what works best for you on the waters you fish. I'm no expert, but when I first started out, it was so confusing to me, and it still is at times. But hopefully this helps some. Thanks for commenting and the support on our channel. If ever I can help, just get in touch. Tight lines my friend.

    I am 76 yrs old and challenged with this equipment to put it lightly. I've been looking for video such as yours for quite some time, so just a note to say thank you very much. I know this will still be a struggle but is the best tutorial of this type I have found, so thanks and I encourage folks in my situation to support your efforts. so thanks again for this step by step instructive video. patrick Reimal ...Thank you very much Mr Reimal. Please do remember that not all the settings are set in stone. They will have to be adjusted to fit certain situations. For instance, In Sonar I had to change "Surface Clutter" from 5 down to 2 the last time I was out. Also in sonar, "Zoom Width" I said "Wide". That is for down imaging and I use wide in shallow water (10' or less). I normally have that on "Medium" because most of the brush I find are in 15-20 foot of water.
      But if you need any help please don't hesitate to get a hold of me. The easiest way is to write me an email and I can send you my phone number. My email address is jesslopez50@yahoo.com.
      Again thank you for the kind words and support.

    Heck YEA, Jess! PLEASE! I'm an old man (53), but brand new to this electronics jazz. I bought my boat last August and put a Helix 10 Mega chirp GN2 SI on the console, Helix 12 chirp GN2 DI (non mega) at the bow, and just now installed the Ultrex with I pilot & the 360. Haven't begun to understand the potential of all this technology I've amassed! (Embarrassed!) I actually wish I could find someone local to school me with all this on the water. Any vids you produce will be watched by me multiple times!!!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

    Waiting for my Humminbird Helix 5 DI GPS G2 to arrive by courier. I have watched many “How to” videos on UA-cam, and all your settings make a lot of sense, and I will be setting up my unit following your recommendations till I get the hang of it. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with us.

      Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. A couple months ago a subscriber called me so I could help him set his up and his settings on his helix 5 di were very different than the helix 10. We ended up getting on live chat so I could watch as he went through the settings in the menu and try to figure that units settings. It took a bit but I think we got it.
      It just takes time out on the water and trying different settings to figure them out on your own. But you'll get there. Remember, as long as you're just messing with the settings you can't mess the unit up because you can always reset to factory settings.

      Fishing with Fredo ...I just bought a Lakemaster Plus to put in one of my megas. The only difference between the regular lakemaster and the Plus is with the Plus you can do satellite layers. That I like cause when I go to a lake I don't know, I always have to look on Google earth to see what the shoreline is, where the creeks are etc. Now with plus, I can do all that on the water instead of just being able to do it at home on my computer. Lol

    Retired 70 year old guy looking to buy first boat and all the fishfinder stuff was pure Greek. Your explanation has helped me to start deciphering some of this "Greek". It is really great to see someone actually explain what this stuff (SI, DI, 455-800-1200 HZ) means. Hope to learn more about trolling motors aswell. Hope to buy boat in June and need to figure this stuff out.

      I'm so glad I didn't confuse you. Lol. ... I know when I first started using fishing electronics it was all so confusing, and everything I found on the Internet just confused me even more. No one would break it down so I could understand, And that's all I'm trying to do is explain it so I would have understood it. I am very uncomfortable in front of the camera and that makes it a difficult explaining things like I would like. I may have to do 20 to 30 takes every time I talk in front of the camera, and I still mess it up some way or another. I should do a blooper segment at the end of every video. HA..... I sure thank you for the feedback and for taking the time to watch my vids. In the future, if I can help you in any way, don't hesitate to contact me. I'll help if I can.

I actually watched this video and typed up all these settings almost to the word. Hoping to get my units better fitting my Croppie fishing needs. I have two Garmins up front both my boats and two hummingbird helix at the helm on the boats, all 7”. I have to say that Garmins seem easier to set up. But can’t say they have a better or clearer view than the hummingbirds. Really liking my hummingbirds, but I got to get out of the Garmin mode and learn the hummingbirds better. On changing the Spectrum for 2D, Di and Si I was told to do the maximum for Start and Ending. Any reason why you are setting below the maximum?
    Also do you have a video on Mega Si and how to see fish? We are using our unit mainly to find salmon and Steelhead that are in 10' to 40'. One trip the screen was really grainy but we were locating schools of Chinook Salmon throughout the day and helped with being in the zone for location and depth. Next trip nothing. I can see structure, trees and brush but no fish. Have tried a number of settings with no luck. Our unit had a real failure and sent in to Humminbird. They replaced a circuit board. I actually had trouble before the failure seeing fish.
    We bought our Helix 12 Chirp Mega Si G2N unit June of 2017. An installer suggested that I do the addition 2D transducer with Y cable. Then later I added the second Mega transducer and Y cable for a left and right Si.
    Any suggestions or videos that I might try? I have actually watched a lot of them. I'm a Disabled Vet so I have time to focus on learning. Also we live in Oregon south of Portland and have not found a Humminbird expert especially on these new Mega G2N units.

    • @CrappieCraze
      @CrappieCraze  6 років тому

      David Klinger ...Yes sir. They do help put fish in the boat. One of the best things on there is the "Vessel Offset". You may know what it does, but I'll say anyway for others. When going from one waypoint to another, your boat icon is in the middle of the screen. But with the vessel offset on (and you set the speed when you want it done) the boat icon will move to the bottom of the screen giving you more time to line up on the waypoint as your coming up to it and zooming in on it rapidly. Awesome new setting.

    In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.

    I have the helix 5 with chrip and gps. Is chrip the same as down imaging. Also, how do you tell which transducer you have?

    • @CrappieCraze
      @CrappieCraze  6 років тому +1

      origpepper1 ...No. Chirp simply means you have different frequencies you can use. If you have DI, it should have chirping capability. What exactly did the box say that the unit came in? Helix 5 DI Chirp? Helix 5 SI Chirp? Or just Helix 5 Chirp? They do have two different transducers it seems for the Helix 5 Chirp units. The one that comes with the unit is the regular 83/200 kHz but with chirping capabilities. The other transducer has to be purchased. Specs for the two transducers are
      83kHz...Chirp...75-95 kHz
      200kHz..Chirp..175-225 kHz
      Can purchase this one:
      Low: 28-75kHz
      Medium: 75-155 kHz
      High: 139-250 kHz
      83/200: 75-155/130-250 kHz
      50/200: 28-75/130-250 kHz
      I hope this info helps.

      Crappie Craze , man I remember asking you about this awhile back when u and ur wife were catching fish. You were trying a new jig in that video, red and something LOL can't remember even though you told me where the buy them from. U were killing the crappie and if I could figure out what ur seeing so I'll be able to know what a successful body of fish look like would be the best thing since slice bread for me! For instance on SI, I think ur supposed to be able to see fish in the bright area. If u can see a 🌲 limb can't u see fish also?? I never seen anything other than structure?! So all ur tip's will be very helpful to me sir. I run a Solex 12. Thanks

    • @CrappieCraze
      @CrappieCraze  6 років тому

      Reggie Donner ....Yes sir, you should be able to see the fish between the limbs, especially on that monster Solex 12 unit. SI is my favorite screen to look for fish. DI can be tricky to get a really good clean crisp picture. Everything has to be almost perfect. Wind, chart speed, boat speed, sonar width, contrast, sensitivity, and the most important, the angle that you hit the object at. So SI is my favorite because all those variables aren't as crucial to get a good SI view. If you're wanting a good decent picture on your SI, go and put all my settings in your unit. Next time you find a pile/laydown, have your sensitivity set at between 10-12. Then to see the fish, start playing around with your contrast. Contrast will make the difference, usually. Just remember, the closer you are to the object, the better your chances are of seeing the fish. Use your zoom also. That really helps seeing them little white dots.

    i have the same unit same size. How do I see how deep it is under my cursor? Is that even possible? Like when you are in side imaging and u see something interesting and u move the cursor there - why doesn't it show how deep it is? Even if I went there with the boat already and it is saved on my memory card - I still dont know how to show how deep it is on the SI. The Lowrance units do show that.

    • @CrappieCraze
      @CrappieCraze  6 років тому

      i_fish ....You have your SI READOUTS turned off. Turn SI READOUTS to "ON". Then when you move your cursor, a grey box will appear at the top of your screen and it will show your cursor depth and distance.

      i_fish .....It's exactly at 4:00 in this video. Just hit menu twice, then go over one spot to "SONAR", then down to "SI READOUT". nite Judy before that si readout, you have "SI DEPTHLINES", you can put that "ON" as well. It will help determine distance and depth

    Just bought a Helix 9 mega si g2n and I’m having issues with the digital depth readout jumping all over the place. Any suggestions?

    • @CrappieCraze
      @CrappieCraze  6 років тому

      Dustin Harris ...I've heard of this happening to some folks. First things to try. (Put in advance mode)......Turn off jigging mode. Turn off 2D Switchfire. Turn Surface Clutter down as low as possible. Turn sensitivity down as low as possible. To check you haven't gone to low, drop a jig to about 10' - 15' under your transducer and jig it up and down. Adjust your sensitivity up from zero until you can see that jig moving up and down.
      If none of this helps settle your depth reading, then turn your auto depth to manual and set it to about 10' lower than the depth you're in. Double echoes can cause this problem as well. You get double echo if the bottom of the lake is very hard and the sensitivity is to high, giving you the double echo. Now if all this fails, go to "Default Settings" and hit that. It will put all your settings back to factory settings. Then start over and do one setting at a time till something doesn't look right. You may also want to check to make sure you have the latest update on your unit. Let me know if you get it fixed, please.

    • @CrappieCraze
      @CrappieCraze  6 років тому

      Dustin Harris .....One more thing, just because I have mine set on a certain number doesn't mean that setting will give you the same results. For instance.... my surface clutter is set at 5. You may need to go lower.

    • @dustinharris8829

      doug mackey ...I find this on a Humminbird group. I hour it helps.
      Got this today from my guy at humminbird. Maybe it will help people with the double returns.
      ISSUE) DIGITAL DEPTH INCORRECT (SHALLOW WATER 15FT OR LESS)
      If you have a customer that has a SOLIX or HELIX unit that is using the 83 kHz (Medium CHIRP) or perhaps even the 200/ 83 kHz (Med/High CHIRP) frequencies and they are complaining about the unit having Digital Depth issues when they are in water that is less than 15 feet and the bottom is very hard below is what needs to be done:

      Surface Clutter should be set to 7 and Medium/83 kHz Sensitivity Offset to should be set from -4 to -6 depending on the need.
      This change does not have an negative practical or cosmetic effect on the usability or fishability of the sonar. This allows the unit to track bottom while using the Medium beam in shallow water in all scenarios with the exception of sitting on a concrete boat ramp.
