I really love the methodical, easy feeling of the piano with this, it really complements the concept of 'the list', distilling a series of murders and vengeance into a simple checklist. Easy to follow, easy to cross off, easy, easy, easy, right up until it's not.
This song is the best description of the painful obsession that almost consumed him. I can picture his eyes, cold and fixed on the task, his mind repeating names.
I feel it’s remarkably common to walk into darkness so many choose that path others have it chosen for them, it takes a truly strong person to walk out of it
I feel like all he would have needed was some good distance and careful shot placement to make easy work of two or three of the party. It's not out of this world for that to have happened.
I think there is a extremely low chance that he could have taken any of them out Grogs got too much health Vax has too much quick damage Scanlan’s too smart Vex has too many tactical advantages and Keyleth has too much power he’s just one pc I doubt he could’ve taken the party unless Matt went all in and buffed the hell out Perthax
Easily. He could have dissapeared and Talison would have constantly been building a sub story for Percy in the back ground. He would have used every angle, every advantage. He would have gathered mind breakers to lock down Grog, counter mages to fight Scanlin and Kealith, red herrings for Vex to observe, illusions to trick Pike. He would have been the first to dispell Vax's haste. The first to focus on Pike with unrelenting force, which would trick Scanlin into making bad decisions. He would have isolated Kealith and let her desperation overwhelm her. He wouldn't be the first to capture Grog's mind but might have been the first to focus on simply putting Grog away to deal with at another time all together. He would've outright killed Trinket just to throw off Vexalia. He would have traveled to the demi-plane space that they keep referencing Kealith killed a kid by accident. The only wild card would be Talison's new character, likely Mollymauk or Clay. He would have been the end of Vox Machina.
the composition is amazing and the lyrical structure evocative, but what's really impressive and I think any Critter worth their salt can agree is the emotion behind the vocals. The piano sets the stage for the emotional piece but it's the delivery of the lyrics that really sell it and when the names of the traitors are read off and one can hear the barely held venom in the vocalists delivery, well it's hard not to imagine Percival slowly loading Pepper box as he spits Ripley's name.
If this is to become a musical I could really see a later echo on the briarwoods arc of the part where Percy lists the names after a certain betrayal in his eyes and then listing his foes and family mixed up (maybe even Vox Machina members as well), as he grasps the morality of having one of his own standing between him and his vengeance.
While watching episode 6 of the Legend of Vox Machina this song resurfaced in my memory. I’m glad I remembered this and came back, it’s just as amazing as I remembered.
This so damned evocative. The part where you speak of the hallways filling with screams was chilling because for a brief moment I felt like Percy, being pulled from the room by servants and hearing the screams of the dying, familiar, family and friends. The sounds of his childhood being murdered ringing in white and red stone walls. Percy was always my favorite character and I never saw his flaws as being half the sins that Taliesin does but if I ever wondered for a moment of his motivations, that image that I knew but never considered was all it would have taken.
@@MNcit The big one that always got me is they all seemed to make *such* a big deal about "guns bad because danger" when the perfect counterpoint to that is when they're arming citizens of whitestone to fight a *dragon* . Where else can you provide the sheer power equivalence to the common people in a setting with dragons and wizards? They're not there quite widely available enough yet, of course, but Percy set the wheels in motion for a more egalitarian society . His motivation of Justice was corrupted by the demon dreams (and even then into, as I said before, a very relatable and fair Vengeance),but even in his darkest evil he accidentally founded a mitigating good.
I’m running a D&D game set in Tal’dorei. One of the taverns the party will be heading to soon is near Whitestone, and I’m totally having a bard there singing this...
I`ve found it just now and from the 1st lines it broke my heart to a million pieces. The moment he says the names not of his enemies, but of his family, who also all had become... a simple list of names. Oooof. Chills, Chills. So much hidden and revealed pain in these words. I want to hug both Percy and Cass and comfort them till the end of the world. And these tears in _your_ voice at 4:00, when saying " My family`s voices rising up, steadying my hand". This is an acting, real acting in the song. Thank you very, very much.
With the show out now this song hits all over again. The moment I saw his gun light up in the Amazon show I had to come back to this song. So perfect!!
This has an eerie feel of Steven Sondheim; both "The Gun Song" from Assassins and aspects of "A Barber & His Wife" and "Joanna" from Sweeney Todd. I think Taliesin would approve!
I reeeeeally, really hope that Taliesin has seen this or at least will see it at some point. It's such a genious and perfect tribute to the darker side of his character, and also to the arguably best arc in the whole first campaign. From the first time I heard it, I had vivid visuals going on in my head from different moments of the show. I would so adore for someone to make an animated tribute of this. Music, lyrics, vocals - everything fits together flawlessly, just like the pieces of Percy's gun.
I really love how Percy always said 'a dream'. His life was destroy, he has nightmares all nights. But the contract was a dream for him. When meeting a demon is a dream, meh, his life sucks a little XD
this song puts a sickening feeling in my stomach and in a good way. as i listen to this, i started to feel the emotions that Percy was going through and now i feel like i must put those sick people down for what they did. This was truly amazing and i hope you keep doing this
For awhile he was also the one that literally said if someone had to make a deal with a devil it would be him, because he didn't want any of his friends to and at the time felt his soul was already irredeemably lost so it didn't matter what fiendish entity took it.
@@jlokison Well he wasn't all that wrong, he basically went "The two of you can tear eachother into pieces fighting over my soul, have fun!" Honestly, he may have hoped that they tore it in two and destroyed it so neither devil nor demon would get the satisfaction of eternally tormenting him or any of his friends.
Percy is my all time favorite. His condratictory personality. His dark desires and demands. Percy had a plan to kill every vox machina member if they ever turned on him. He studied them enough to know how to take them all out without a problem. His ending had me in tears. When he felt all was gone, vax had been taken and his contract wasn't working. He slumped against the wall and cried saying he missed his family. It was in this moment percy realized he had thought everything that had happened was the machinations of a dying man in jail. And realizing it actually was real broke him.
1:28 - "Our once great name, their faces fade, reduced to a list." 4:30 - "What little good that I could do, I can finish a list." These are the best lines in my opinion. Their once great name _reduced_ to a list. Just, damn... That's raw. How many great people were reduced to a list? Not the famous ones, but great people you personally know, that just one day were reduced to a list, in a death ledger in some office. "What little good that I could do, I can finish a list." And that... Check the box, this task is done, move on to the next one. You wrote it in such a way to make revenge so mundane. Just a list. A simple list. Anyone can finish a list. Making a list makes tasks seem trivial, and that is what you made revenge out to be. A trivial task, a simple task to be done, a task so feasibly accomplished. Amazing writing, simple yet with complex undertones. It delivers directly, it doesn't get cluttered or tangential with flowery prose, it's just someone wanting to finish a simple list. No need for it to be all that complicated. It's just a list. Great work. I really believe this should be somewhere in the official show. A bard. Maybe even a sidetrack. A bonus at the end of some episode, or released separately on their official channel. Anywhere, as long as they make it official.
When Tal was talking about forgiving Riply, he said that it took to long and by that time Vox Machina managed to heal him. Something about that in the moment character discussion made me all feel all of the feels.
This is... overwhelmingly brilliant. There are so many wonderful parts, but the listing of his family, and his trying to keep that grief just another list is phenomenal
I've had this stuck in my head since the recent video announcing the extended voice cast for the animated series. Had to come back and give it another listen, and it's still so good. Easily my favorite fan piece from the first campaign by far. (It's just so raw and satisfying to sing to.)
I love this song because at the end of the day I dont know if these are Percy's thoughts or just Orthax driving him. Maybe it doesn't matter and it's both, but I love wondering. Thank you for this. Its simple, haunting, and beautiful.
VaanTD I'm just happy that the critter community is enjoying it. It seems like the cast only really see stuff when enough people reblog them enough. maybe tag him and tweet it? :)
I want to see the musical this comes from! I can totally imagine a reprise of this after the Chroma Conclave, listing off the dragons he and Vox Machina to kill. There is always a List. This is truly an amazing work of art and it makes me love my fellow Critters even more.
My family’s gone. I’ll not be free Till I can use my steel to be Their vengeance, be the monster That they need. Reminds me of my own character who slowly used a demon to gain more and more power to avenge his own family, and after the encounter he turned into a secondary boss fight.
Hello! Today is the release date of Vox Machina on Amazon Prime! We’ve just had episode 3 that adapts episodes 23-26ish with the Royal Dinner & VM’s first Briawood encounter! This song is immediately after and perfectly places into Percy’s mindset in both the D&D stream & tv show!
Man I thought Say was awesome but this is chilling. Your way with words and lyrics is amazing. And I love the repeating theme of lists and just, ah man it's good!
When Percival Fredrickstein von Mussel Kowalski de Rolo III was young, Lord and Lady Briarwood came to his home as slaughtered his entire family. He managed to escape and wandered across the continent for a time before he had a dream. In this dream a demon/shadow asked him to make a deal. The shadow demon (Orthax) would receive the souls of the people Percy got vengeance on and Percy would receive inspiration to build his first gun ‘The List’. It was the first gun in existence and had 6 barrels, with 1 name on each barrel: Silas Briarwood, Delilah Briarwood, Professor Anders, Captain Stonefell, Dr. Anna Ripley, and a blank barrel (later to have the name of Cassandra de Rolo).
This definitely has the haunted planning tones that I associate with musicals and makes me so sad and concerned. Amazing take on the list and the words flow beautifully together.
Dude, this is amazing! I can't wait for an official announcement for the auditions! I have been working on singing for years, and would love to try out!
4:16 Makes it sadder at the end as the names are listed off if you imagine Percy shooting each of them and then ending it off by placing the gun to his own head and firing.
God I love this song! I always find myself coming back to it! I wonder what the other members of Vox Machina, Mighty Nein, and Bell's Hells themes would be with your style!
Keyleth: "Raishan's at the top of my list."

That's the most Percy thing of this song IMHO, obsessive, repressed, full of power... This song deserved to be included in the animated series...

it takes a brave man to walk into darkness... it takes braver man to walk out
I feel it’s remarkably common to walk into darkness so many choose that path others have it chosen for them, it takes a truly strong person to walk out of it

Percy didn't walk out. Scanlan turned on the light

Does anyone else think that Percy could've very easily become one of the hardest villains if the rest of Vox Machina hadn't defeated Orthax?
He was powerful in many ways
