W. Kamau Bell On #BlackLivesMatter & The Importance Of Showing Your Work | CONAN on TBS
/ teamcoco - Комедії
Conan is uploading these in their entirety to actually hear- ad free. He’s an incredible man and an opportunity for all of us to hear and come together
Thank you, Conan and thank you, W. Kamau Bell
Well... He has an agenda
nvvhhh
I don’t think that’s the important part here... if you’re going to praise Conan in this situation, his real breakthrough is that he posted this conversation at all. He wasn’t sure if this was the right thing to do, but he had the confidence to know he’s going to get it wrong. It was honestly painful watching his responses in this, and I’m disappointed to see a top comment praising Conan here instead of W. Kamau Bell who did the majority of the work in this situation. Props to them both, they both did work, but W. Kamau Bell is the real hero here.
The truth is there's no real diversity of opinion on this recent crusade of Conan's. Thomas Sowell, Burgess Owens, Jason Riley, Larry Elder, Brandon Tatum, Charles Blain. He'd have no problem booking these guests if he wanted to.
It’s tragic that there’s very little cross-pollination of ideas between left and right America, resulting in Americans spending a lifetime isolated within their respective political echo-chambers. Conan must acknowledge his part in deepening this divide and bring a multitude of viewpoints to his audience.
W. Kamau Bell was truly spitting some truth here, and I also liked how Conan was being real and engaging with the subject, too. He also looks better here for some reason, lol.
"be confident you're gonna get it wrong" that's such a powerful statement... Everything can be a growth edge, not a fail!
White people don't have the confidence to "Do it wrong" because when they do, they are cancelled, and maligned, and no amount of sincere apology puts them back in a place where they can be an ally again.
As a white girl, this helps inspire me to action.
I feel badly black Americans have to encourage ME, have to rise above their pain and caudle me; I needed you to uplift me. I'm gonna do better.
PEACE
@@-carlos-danger1891 Yes, it is true there may be consequences for us getting it wrong and yes most mistakes have a cost.
But, we can learn and do better next time, or we can insist that our mistake should not cost us while we continue to watch black lives make mistakes that cost them their lives.
Everyone needs to see the big picture.
I loved this quote too, and so many others from this conversation. The homework I’m taking away from this is to share quotes from this video and start conversations with the white family and friends of mine who are currently scared to take any action, whether it’s because of a fear of doing it wrong, or just a lack of understanding and a hesitancy to get involved.
I love his t-shirt with Tony Bourdain as well... Tony showed us all the people from around the world in perfect manner.
I saw that too! It's so appropriate for this time we're going through. Anthony Bourdain was a quality human being, he touched so many people through the common language of food! AND HE OWNED HIS FLAWS LIKE W/the #METOO movement! RIPower, Anthony Bourdain!
I just watched that episode. Bourdain was the man. Props to Kamau.
god I miss tony
The face looked familiar but couldn't remember the name. Thanks.
I'm a huge Bourdain fan..He is missed.
You know Conan is serious when his pomp looks more like a regular split.
appropriately flying at half-mast in mourning of the situation
His hair is too long and heavy (due to lockdown) for a well-coiffed pomp.
Or his stylist took the week off. :D
lol thats paranormal sympathetic magic
@@liamarunbennett8282
"If you're looking for hope, look for it in work." - great point and great conversation, and love his shoutout to Anthony Bourdain. I also missed "United Shades of America" Such a good show. Hope to see it soon after this pandemic.
When things are serious Conan takes them serious. Knowing when to joke and be serious is what make Conan special. We appreciate you Conan
I keep sharing links but, being a quiet person, newly speaking out, especially in a time when we're so isolated, more often feels like flailing. "Scared to do it wrong" hits hard and even more reason to keep going.
being an introverted black man I feel you, but follow black activists you can trust and learn from them, read and watch things that can educate you. Thank you so much for doing what you can, every little proactive thing you do helps, and also helps you to do more.
I am also an introvert, but I've begun to donate to the NAACP. If you're unable to donate for whatever reason, we could still be the fellow cop who keeps his partner from going too far. Or tell your friends their behavior makes you feel uncomfortable. Thank you for your comment. ❤
Same and same. Keep it up. It is so worth it.
I appreciate you W. Kamau Bell and for those who don’t know him he had the best show in SF called “Ending Racism in About an Hour” he is funny, clear and compassionate!
Also check out his clips from his short lived show totally biased! Way ahead of its time.
His compassion is what makes Kamau stand out for sure!
@@honeybee347 I am also a big fan! Being of middle eastern decent, I loved and related to his clip sheik vs sikh!
Agreed.
Conan handles serious topics SO WELL. Best host ever
And I know this conversation in particular must have been difficult for him. Good on him and good on Bell for engaging him honestly and not protecting his feelings.
In any other year I'd be seriously bummed about Conan having serious discussions about serious things with serious people, but 2020 keeps changing things up on us, doesn't it? I'm so glad Coco is making these and putting them online
@Socrates - its class warfare...but blacks get it bad still... much more
Jay Tor show me the evidence serioursly. It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with class and culture which are still issues just not racism. Unless I hear that these people are being killed because they are black I don’t believe that’s what’s happening
@Socrates well, it has to do with racism, the system is racist. And we should vote and demand people who radically stand for changing that system
@Socrates You're suggesting it's an either/or proposition, when it's both
@usermcgee no. Some people can't say black lives MATTER.🤦 If all lives matter, you agree that black lives matter too.
I adore W. Kamau Bell, thank you so much for having him on your show to speak his mind and share knowledge!!
Jc G. That’s how I found this. I search for all things W. Kamau Bell. Love him!
"The system isn't broken. It's designed to do this."
it's not really tho. the system is abused to do this, it's not created with the intention of disenfranchising black people. it didn't need to be. when our system of government was established it would have been absurd to even consider a black president. Racism has simply been a strong undercurrent that countermands the progress of blacks within society. The system doesn't even need to be changed that much, WE need to change. If we take responsibility for these problems rather than blaming the system or blaming an entire race we'll get a lot farther a lot quicker.
@@xordus go for it
I think capitalism in America was designed and implemented to take advantage of “free” and “ cheap” labor so all the profits go to the top. Still going on. It cruel and encourages corporations and people to demonize the poor, disenfranchised and working class to keep the system intact.
@Taylor Morgan
Replace Capitalism with Neoliberalism and add how free trade is used to saturate the workforce, lowering wages.

@@taylormorgan5931 so capitalism is bad? Every system has its problems but maybe we have a capitalistic society because it's the best
Tbh, I am really enjoying these talks. Each new guest brings forth more points I hadn't yet considered.
Blame the Public School System 😡!! Lol🤭😉jk
They're damn right it's not just an American problem. There are alarming parallels here in Australia. Since 1980 there have been 500 Aboriginal deaths in police custody. The same bullshit arguments are used to rationalise the fact that there are rarely consequences beyond an internal investigation for the police officers involved. Aboriginal people are incarcerated at an even more disproportionate rate than Black Americans, and many aboriginal people live in third world conditions in a country that has one of the highest standards of living in the world. Until that shit is sorted out, I can't honestly say, as a white guy, that I'm truly proud to be Australian.
By the way, if you're a white person looking for a good example of how to support Black Lives Matter and the civil rights movement in general (without unintentionally making it about you), I recommend checking out the documentary Salute (search for Salute the Movie). It tells the story of Peter Norman who shared the podium with Jon Carlos and Tommie Smith at the Mexico Olympics in 1968 when they made their now famous civil rights protest, holding their fists in the air in the Black panther salute. It tells the tale of how a small gesture of support can mean, what it cost all three men, and debunks the myth that such acts of solidarity aren't appreciated. It also taught me a lot about the Civil Rights movement in america at the time. The friendship those three great men forged that day is something I aspire to emulate. It's also very interesting to compare and contrast the different ways that the various white people in the film viewed the incident.
I will stand with you because Black Lives Matter.
I feel the same way as an American. We can do better. It's pure laziness that we don't.
Thank you for sharing that this is a problem in Australia. Racism needs to be eradicated worldwide.
A lot of my fam lives in Australia, and when I go over there every year u can clearly see that the problem is similar to the one in America.
Keep speaking up!
Thank you for sharing this. I agree that it is not only an American issue and I am surprised when other countries seem to judge us. Slavery also existed in England (which I feel barely anyone talks about), apartheid ended VERY recently, you just mentioned the disparities in Australia, and there are issues with colorism in almost every country I believe (people of the same race mistreating each other because of how dark or light their skin is). We need to reevaluate ourselves as HUMANS and do better. One love.
Conan deserves a medal. This was a hard, hard interview. Those were some hard questions shot at him and I think he answered them with as much honesty as he could.
Pandering to a mob. Yup what heroes, both of them.
We're having real conversation now. Too bad it took what it took to happen.
true, but as Conan and W alluded to, all of this change that is starting to happen might not have occurred if COVID 19 were not happening, peace
I wish he had started these conversations a long long time ago but I'm still really glad he's doing it now. he's sitting with discomfort and he could have skated. I think that's one of the biggest things he could do as a leader trying to get people to move into discomfort
@@danam0228 Covid helped this to really sink in. People couldn’t just run off to their next distraction.
I hear you... but it’s good that it’s happening. The outcome of these conversations will prove the deaths were not in vain.
I really like this idea of being more diverse selfishly, to create a more vibrant and interesting society. I also am thinking about my own inventory, and this idea that I should embrace that I'm going to make mistakes is a really, really important encouragement. This was powerful, and empowering (I'm not leaving feeling hopeless, but instead hopeful). Thank you Conan, and thank you W. Kameu Bell for sharing and educating, and helping drive reflection and tangible change.
lmao Kamau holding up his fist at the end and conan respond 'I'd do that too but I'm not sure If I'm supposed to!'

It's great. That's how we figure shit out!
I knew someone who lived in a house that had a cellar (that they have since sealed off because the door would not stay shut, NOT JK) that was part of the Underground Railroad. Not only was the house haunted, but when I would stand in the cellar, there was a true presence and emotion down there that one could feel. Or I and the family who lived there could feel at least. The first time I went down there I started weeping. Uncontrollably. It just overtook me. A wave of fear and sadness and heartache. The ghosts of the past are still with us. In many more ways than one. The struggle still lives and we should never forget the human atrocities and abuses of hate filled brutality that have occurred in the past. OR IN THE PRESENT. I write this as a 1/2 Jewish white girl-The past can never be forgotten. Lest we let another Hitler or George Wallace come to power. Wait, I meant to write “STAY IN POWER”. We must vote for lasting change to happen...
After all that's happened, Kamau's shirt just broke me.

This was amazing. I've always loved watching Conan, and the conversations need to be had just like this one. Where we can talk about the seriousness of the problem, we can find a common ground, find a solution to the problem that is racism, but also we can keep an open dialogue and also be able to laugh while making sure we keep pushing forward. I loved his point about doing the work. Just like the saying goes "faith without works, is dead" and it can be applied here, without doing the work to fix the system, it will never be changed.
Conan is using his intellect and platform in an amazing way. This is why i love this guy. He can act all stupid and goofy but also serious and eloquent when he it's necessary. I just love watching him and his contents. Conan is awesome.
may everyone also use their platform for good
You should listen to his podcast if you don’t already. It’s great, probably my favorite. I believe all of his podcasts were recorded prior to all the protests that are going on now and mostly before the coronavirus epidemic so he doesn’t discuss these topics but they’re very entertaining.
Stay safe, @Gagan and everyone
I was encouraged to hear what Kamau said about participating for selfish reasons. When trump got elected it hit me how oppression of black people is holding back progress on every issue: health Care, education, income equality, the environment. White people still don't realize that our destinies are 100% tied up together.
Making sure Black people are safe is an exercise we need to do every day until & after we're truly an equal society. BLACK LIVES WILL ALWAYS MATTER & I WILL DO EVERYTHING IN MY WILL TO LEARN & KEEP WORKING! W. Kamau Bell is one of my favorite people & Comedians.

I loved that point so much. I've never heard it expressed before but I love it. It's probably the most true and profound and actionable thing I've heard throughout this entire period.
As a fellow product of Brookline public schools, I really appreciate hearing Conan talking about his upbringing there with candor. Up until a certain point in my life, I had a real belief that Racism was done, even in the late 90s - but then Brookline was the first place I experienced racism. A lot of towns and cities in the northeastern US have today this same kind of “good-intentions gumption” about how bigotry is a thing of the past.
UCLA civil rights project says the north east is the most segregated part of the country. They did a good job at making the south bus kids all over cities, but didn't seem to want to do it to their kids
Such a nice treat to see everyone's humanity rise to the challenge! Good for you Conan on choosing this guest, investing this amount of time the TV would've never allowed and also for taking the challenge of furthering your education. Great conversation, many thanks!
Well you clearly aren't educated if you're falling for this bs.

Agreed that the system isn't broken; it's designed to work this way.
Me too, which is why Bell’s comments on affirmative action are a little unfortunate. He acknowledges the obvious, long-standing systemic injustice, but then he poses “showing your work” by hiring more black people as a solution. That’s not a solution because it doesn’t address the public resource disparities (good schools, good hospitals, less liquor and gum stores, racist cops, etc.) that plagues predominantly black neighborhoods. It’s trying to stop a leaky dam with band aids instead of walking around to the other side and using putty.
Are you suggesting that some people cannot live according to the US constitution?

this conversation was incredibly interesting and gave a new structure and way for non black people (including us non black poc) to keep ourselves accountable.
This conversation did not consider other POC at all. It was very one-sided with an "us vs them" theme running through it. It was not an inclusive talk, and it did not consider the complexity of modern America's composition. Native Americans, Latinos, and other races where not considered in this conversation at all.

For all the ppl of color reading this, ily. Over the past year I've been through a bit of a tough time. I'm half white half mexican, and where I live it's not blacks that get bullied, it's whites. But I live in the suburbs so the ways to scare off a bully are endless, but I've always felt bad for the ppl on the other side of things. I understand as a person who saw the George Floyd video that the racial injustice between whites and blacks are out of hand. This shouldn't be happening. It's hard to understand that a lot of ppl in this world believe that they're better than someone just cuz they were born a different race. I look more white than I do mexican, so I'm not gonna have to grow up scared of cops, I'm lucky. But just cuz I look the way I do doesn't mean I should have more opportunities than someone who looks different to me. When ur young ur protected from the real world, but even being 12 rn, I realize the world is complicated. Full of anger and hate. I have the most beautiful gf with the most beautiful heart, and she's asian. My ex was white and treated me like garbage. She broke up with me after two weeks. I've been with my gf now almost 10 months. I'm not saying all whites are privileged pricks, im just saying that u can't judge someone on their appearance. It's stupid if u think about. Rest in peace George Floyd, and be a lesson that this injustice needs to change. 💖🙏✌️
I’m learning a lot from all these conversations. Thank you both. I’m going to keep learning, and start doing the work.
Conan crushed it last week. Absolutely fantastic interviews.
This feels like medicine. Thank you.
IMO (in my opinion) at least 3 things need to be done immediately to “put out the fire” (as Kama says):
1. Get the court case DONE already, the officer has been charged, get it done and make sure justice works this time
2. All officers in ALL departments & states/territories - if they have an abusive history, as this officer did, FIRE THEM IMMEDIATELY. They have until July 15 to get this done and publicly show their work. No more chances for these corrupt cops, they’ve already shown they’re not effective in delivering justice according to the Constitution
3. Training for police - we all know there are a lot of law abiding cops. What they need to add is training to get rid of corrupt cops. For example, the other 3 officers should’ve pulled Derek Chauvin off of Floyd, or NOT EVEN ALLOW HIM TO STAY KNEELING on Floyd once he was considered “under control” (not sure if I’m using “politically correct” terminology here, just trying to get solutions out there as this needs to be dealt with immediately).
This “blue shield/blue code/blue wall of silence”, whatever it’s called must be shut down immediately. It does NOT help the situation. NO OFFICER SHOULD BE MADE TO FEEL he’s a “bad cop/rat” for reporting the brutality (excessive use of force, as we all know force is needed when rightful arrest being resisted by a suspect) of a fellow officer against ANY suspect.
I have no idea how this change could be effected. It’s Much more systemic. For example, It’s no different than the crash of 2007/08 and NONE OF THE CENTRAL BANKERS WHO CAUSED IT TO HAPPEN were convicted of their crimes. Yet hundreds of thousands of Americans are still living in their vehicles or in the streets - all races & colors. Central bank cartel’s crimes are still going unchecked today. Maybe they’re even financially supporting all this societal corruption & disruption.
4. camera always on , on the car , on the body ... you'd be surprised but many cops also desire this!
Courts are not in session right now and even if they did try these guys quickly what’s to stop Trump from pardoning these guys?
5. REAL mental screening when onboarding police, either by multiple parties or in a manner that doesn't allow staff psychologists/psychiatrists to overlook glaring issues to keep their job easy and holds them accountable for ignoring or hiding such issues.
this is the first time I see Conan hair down!

Thank you for this, it was very informative and educational as a person of colour. We need more history lessons on black issues to understand why we are where we are today. Wow! So many intelligent points about course of actions to be taken were made here; concise and explained well. Thanks for this Team Coco ❤️
Thank you for taking the weight of this all and holding it so well. This is a system problem, The system is racist and we need to take on the work, the real work together and Hold how are we complicit. Time to get uncomfortable and burn this thing down from the inside out. I just joined a community today that is grouping white people together and POC together, we are reading "My Grandmother's Hands" and spending a year together to do a deep dive around the embodiment of racism. I am so willing to find more love in this world for each other, I'll burn and Hold and do my best to give up my comfort for the good of the whole. One breath at a time. discussons like this one is great. I love that conon now has a mentor in Kate and that we are learning to do our work. If we do it together, we can get though this and build real community, LIberation and Justice for all, a worthy struggle, Again, thanks for this. I took notes.
Its apparent for Kamau Bell is everything (period).
But,
Who doesn't love Conan!
I've been watching him for years
what are the authors he talked about, im trying to search for the segment in the video that W. Kamau Bell mentioned
Was Conan assigned a person - Kate Schatz. Rad American women a-z. Now I am following her @kateschatz cause if Conan is told to pay attention to someone by w kamal bell I’m down with following along.
Thank you Kamau, for the constructive suggestions and important information. We all need to hear this, believe it and most importantly act.
Will be reading all these books ty!!! Let's educate ourselves
What?! Kamau belittles the work that Dr. King did, and praises (requires reading of) Malcolm X,
an angry man from a broken home and prison that preached violence is the only thing the white man understands. Malcolm X was killed by members of his own groups for later trying to move away from violence... The progress of the Civil Rights movement was made by Dr. King and his followers. Laws were changed by Dr. King's spotlight on injustice in America. And yet Kamau says "King's touchy feely let's hug it out" ideas didn't work. Those ideas DID work! No laws were changed by Malcolm X's "by any means necessary" rhetoric. Here Kamau is angry and demands that Conan and his family read and discuss Malcolm X's books, books that I have read, books that promote disdain and hatred for half the population, instead of understanding and living together as one nation. AS DR. KING said himself, "Riots are self-defeating and socially destructive." Kamau Bell, if you are going to require that your white friends who want to be allies read books, Dr. King is far more necessary reading than the isolationist and destructive readings of Malcolm X. I saw a white cop say to angry protesters, "My wife is black, so you know I'm not racist," you would not let them get away with it. And yet you used the same argument here. You need to reevaluate your hardline stance on the issues. Do you want the black community to move to a specific region of America and separate themselves from the US (as Malcolm X suggests), or do you want a whole country where we learn to evolve into a more perfect nation that learns to coexist??!! - like Dr. King preached? Also, do NOT forget police brutality is also a CLASS warfare against the poor vs the wealthy, you would gain far more allies remembering that too.
Thanks so much for sharing this conversation with us today
Conan...just know-- you ARE doing THE WORK to heal us all with your current interviews...love love love
Conan's take on America's state is just wonderfully thought out
Great Interview. Best one yet I’ve seen on this topic
Wow, so funny, even as things are so tense. THKS for this! Best mini-lesson from Kamau. Have learned so much! -- Conan your long hair is soooo cute! LOVE!!!! xoxoxo
It would be great (and help us all with accountability) if Conan could commit to continuing to have one segment a week where he speaks with someone who is working to address these issues and how the rest of us can participate.
I learned sooo much from this conversation! And it makes so much more sense to NOT identify any of these systems as "broken," which implies that they were working at one time. (Including but not limited to policing, healthcare, education, welfare, etc etc..)
Good going Conan! Respect for your effort!
I've been asked "questions" at the workplace because I am south Asian - and one of the questions is..."but when do these demands for equality stop?" !!!!! :) :) i just go back to eating lunch as Kamau said. I am humble enough to know my place in this debate ( i will never appropriate "racism" for selfish gain) but i want to say that every day, every minute, every second, i am grateful for black people who fought for the freedoms i claim as my "own". i really appreciate the window this video gave me into the future of american history
Everyone should feel the need to protest about every injustice in this country. It shouldn't take the death of someone to go do this. We waited too long. Let's not forget our duty as citizens.
I appreciate these interviews, and how respectful Conan is.
Maglio Christopher & Toale, P.A. is one of the few law firms in the country reviewing and representing people with COVID-19 vaccine injury cases.
A model of how two grounded, humble individuals doing the difficult work of uncomfortable dialogue.
Thank you for giving your space in an honest way.
Can someone tell me what author Kamau mentions at 10:25 ? I tried looking up what i *thought* he said and got nothing.
W. Kamau, wow 😯
I loved EVERYTHING you had to say.
Especially the homework assignment
I'm sorry I know there's more to this than this comment but Walter's t-shirt with Anthony. He was truly a welcoming human being that I wish I had a privilege to meet in person. Because of watching him and word of mouth, I became more open. The only celebrity I ever felt deep sadness when he passed and we need more people like him. If you're curious about my race, I'm Asian.
remember the making of a murderer? I told a black friend of mine about it and he looked at me and said that story; every black family has that story. I have that story. His brother was accused of murderer that he didn't commit.
educating myself and passing it on to others, on my facebook. . .and everywhere I am. money is a tool.
He made so many good points, especially the part on responding to people who say all lives matter all the time. I always roll my eyes when I see those comments. Now I know how I feel this way.
Look for hope in work. - Just a piece of this great conversation.
It is very different when you are at the constant receiving end of something, it becomes your reality.
Wow. Very enlightening. Thank you Kamau, thank you Conan.
Thank you Conan! Thank you W. Kamau Bell! Doing push-ups ready to continuously put in the work :) Donating to causes now! Hope others do the same!
I really appreciate this conversation still ♥️
W. Kamau Bell is a treasure
Thank you, Mr. Bell, for your humor, United Shades, and your patience.
