    Thank you.
    I know we all struggle to help shorten the time it takes to shoot and edit Real Estate Photography and one of the best tools / techniques I have found is what I like to call "Window Pull using Darken Mode.. This can really help save the time it takes to select things such as shutters, pillows, plants or basically anything that is in front of the view you are trying to mask in.
    So sit back and enjoy this tutorial, please remember to post comments and a thumbs up is always nice..
    Please remember to subscribe, give a thumbs up (or down) and send me questions or comments as I try to reply ASAP though it might take a couple of weeks.
    And last but not least,
    Disclaimer: as always there are many ways to do everything I do. And for this video there are certainly quality issues but as I always say, these tutorials are for the day to day real estate photographer and the focus is getting the information across.

    Thanks Rich. Have been struggling with this for years. I have two on bracket flashes. First efforts could not get frame overexposed enough from the bracket position. Then I took the slave flash and walked over to the window just off line with the "wide panel" in place. I set the timer on the camera to 10 sec and boom. Worked great. I had to auto align the frames though in the post processing. thanks again.

    If I'm understanding this correctly, the real trick is in getting a shot that's exposed for the window, but also brightens the interior MORE than the properly exposed interior shot - otherwise the darken mask won't work. This seems extremely difficult to do, especially when taking very wide (and somewhat distant) shots. You either need a very powerful flash - or I guess you could set it up in the middle of the frame since it will be masked out in the final image.

    Great tip Rich. I see the same problem that others are seeing. I'm going to guess that using Elements could be the main reason why it doesn't work well. First thing I noticed with LR6 is that it wont allow you to edit as layers in PS when Elements is your main laying application. So, I just exported two of the same images (with varied exposures) to PS Elements then recreated your layer scenario manually. Adobe must have left out some smarts in Elements because I'm able to darken the windows, but it also darkens everything else I touch. I guess it's time to buy the full PS version.

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  6 років тому +1

      I would take a shot and move the flash to move your reflection than mask out the reflection you don't want. I would also take a window exposure with no lights on and than you can mask out any reflections.

    Hi Rich. As always thank you for all the amazing tips and tricks you provide here to the UA-cam community, I have learned so much from your channel. Here's my question on a window pull. What do you do when the correct exterior exposure exceeds your flash sync speed? i.e. 1/500th sec on a Canon camera makes the outside look great but obviously you can no longer overexpose the interior window frame with the flash. Do you change ISO & aperture settings? I am concerned that would cause image problems and not allow the layers to align properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Take care.

    Hopefully you see this comment. I followed your instructions step by step, everything works except for when I am painting over the windows and go past the area I want to show, it bleeds over into the inside of the room. I have tried everything but cannot figure it out. I have tried this probably 4 or 5 times now and keep getting the same thing. Hope you can enlighten me on what I am doing wrong. In the video when you painted over window it did not bleed past the outside. There is a distinct difference in my two shots too. Dark vs light. Thanks Nick

    Thanks for sharing. Curious if it impacts the blinds too or just pulling the view from the window

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  11 місяців тому

      Remember, dark and mode, only exposes what’s darker, and not what’s lighter so as long as the shades are brighter than the frame below it, which would be your flash exposure it won’t mask in if you’re in dark mode it’s a tricky concept to get at the beginning, but once you get, it totally makes sense, I’d be happy to help you in more depth, if you’d like to set up a private coaching session, if this interests you send me an email to richardrichbaum.com or you can text me at 916-296-5778. Rich, thanks again for sharing your helpful ideas and tips. Just a question on composition on this photo, it looks like you had a pretty nice view out the big window, yet you left the blinds down and chose to shoot "through" them, was there a reason? I normally try to have blinds up if possible, especially if there's a good view to be captured. Thoughts?

    • @jamestom2510
      @jamestom2510 8 років тому +1

      Hi Lake Geneva Real Estate, Im not sure of what the go is in the USA, but in Australia, i prefer to have the blinds down but fully open. The reason for this is that the blinds tend to leave an unsightly band at the top of the window when drawn up. The blinds are more tidy left down but open, the views are still visible so it doesnt detract from the views beyond.....

    • @thejimmy6533
      @thejimmy6533 5 років тому

      @@jamestom2510 The clear view through the window far outweighs the unsightly band at the top. Also, having the blinds down and open actually makes the windows look brighter, due to light reflecting off each individual slat. With the blinds pulled up, it's much easier to pull in a well-exposed exterior.

    I'm having the same problems as several people - I do exactly what the video shows, yet everything I brush is darkened, not just the windows. Sure, I get the great view through the window, but the window frames, etc. darken along with the view. The ambient layer is gone. I've stopped the videos and followed along step-by-step to make sure I'm not missing a step yet it won't work for me! What is the issue?

    On another side note, can you do a quick vid on what size/ s you save these files to?? I am doing both large and small (270& 72dpi), it takes so much time.... Do you do both sizes for realtors, or just 72 for web use? Thanks!!

    • @kirtg1
      @kirtg1 7 років тому

      I give agents 72 for the mls and 300 for print. use actions in ps. record one for 300 or 72 then after the action is recorded, one click runs all the images you open individually. Takes a minute or two. if you shrink (drag) the ps window to its smallest size- l to r- the pics process faster but the output is full size.

    Hi Rich, This looks awesome but for some reason it is not working. I have followed all the steps that you have shown. Help please? :) I took bracketed photos and chose the overlay one with no flash (to see the windows) and then one that I took with my speedlite on camera and pointed at the window to overexpose the frame like you did. I then bring the 2 shots into photoshop, put the windows I want to mask in on the top row, make a layer mask, change to darken mode and tried brushing in windows like you did but it doesnt work! Just darkens everything. What am i missing??

    Awesome video thank you. I have been using Photoshop Elements 13 and taking the Lasso Tool and select the window and then choose darken but this takes forever to outline the window in Real Estate especially if you are going around pillows etc. Is it time to upgrade to the Real Photoshop PS and will this make my windows easier ? Also I think you can only get it through the cloud as a download now is this ok ?
    Thank you very much

  • @jamestom2510
    @jamestom2510 8 років тому

    Christopher, i have a question, with this technique, does one have to flash the windows in order for the layering to work? I tend to shoot 3 bracketed shots. im getting mixed results with this technique........and other techniques take far too long for this to be a cost effective way to shoot interiors. Twilight photography has no problems, its just the daylight shoots which tend to get difficult.

    • @KenjiCroman
      @KenjiCroman 8 років тому +1

      stay away from HDR for interiors. It usually doesn't look very good. Use multiple lights if and when possible, it will make you stand out from the rest.

    • @sweettooth5737

      It sounds like you are brushing in on the image itself instead of brushing on the mask. Make sure that the mask is highlighted when you paint in WHITE on the black mask. Easy to accidentally hit on that image thumbnail for some reason...happens to all of us! :)
