As a freelance commercial photographer myself who has a background in product design and a BA degree in software engineering and who also lives in a middle eastern country can confirm everything you've said in the video is actually true and possible. Stop doubting yourself and keep practicing every day and you will see the result.
Thanks for sharing this very inspiring words. I can relate to your story as I found my happiness through photography even if I have a Ba degree in IT. The best choice you can make for yourself in life is to follow your passion no matter what and the money will come along the way.
Laura, thanks for this video!! Question: if you target different niches, do you out all different portfolios in the same website. Isn’t that confusing for clients?
I love your energy SO MUCH. I've been wanting to go into photography for money for years, but I keep creating these imaginary barriers for myself out of fear. Your video is equal parts encouraging and practical. You inspire one to be both brave and smart. Thank you!
Love that you agree with shooting in multiple sectors. Many photographers say to niche down, but I agree with you - multiple sectors makes getting work easier.
Omg Laura I am so happy I accidentally came across your channel. I NEVER comment but felt the need to do so on this. I am 27years old and from Miami, Fl but I currently live in Orlando, Fl. I am a license esthetician and a Certified nursing assistant. Recently one of my clients passed away and it made me have a change of heart in my career. I felt like healthcare was just too much for me. Although I have a calling for it, I am too emotional. So I asked myself what is it that I have a passion for and that’s photography. You are a true inspiration and your channel is so informative !! You break everything down in a way for ANYONE to understand and for that I appreciate you. Thank you so much. I apologize for the long paragraph😂
One of the most crucial points you made that I've learned in over a decade of doing this is that in order to be the best at a photography niche, it is helpful to focus only on that, but if you want to make as much money as possible, it is good to offer all the services possible. I get requests for product, branding, headshot, real estate, family events, weddings, and commercial photo and video and if I only did one, I would have far fewer opportunities. Well done
I’m only about to get started in professional photography (i.e. doing free and underpaid shoots to build a portfolio). I think the biggest barrier to making it is not trying. One thing that kept me from trying was that I see _amazing_ photography from pure hobbyists. But when I started to look at some portfolios of professional photographers in my area, I realized that whether or not someone charges money for their work isn’t directly correlated to the quality of their work! I always used to think I had to be the best in order to be reasonably successful, but that’s not even true. Just start. That’s what I’ve decided to do. While it’s daunting, it’s also suuuper liberating. =)
@@nezhafahr7490 Thanks, but at the moment it’s not :D Apparently, my SEO sucks and the whole marketing side of things isn’t working. The clients I’ve had have been super happy with my work (and for the most part, I have too). But I’m not having much success finding clients. Doesn’t mean I’m giving up. I’m definitely going to keep at it.
I feel like I can breathe after watching your video. I had all these thoughts or people that aren’t photographers or videographers have told me how impossible it is.
NEVER listen to them. Trust me… I did have many people around me telling me the same when they were clueless. 😅 Follow your passion. Photography is everywhere thanks to social media. There is a lot of work for everyone! 😊❤️
I love your energy. The only thing that separates you from many photographers is the courage to get up and do it! Others hesitate.... at times for years, and miss the opportunities. Thank you for sharing your experience. It was refreshing and to the point.
After watching this video, all I can say is I'm going to make a huge comeback on my photograhy business. I thought I needed more than a kit lens. Feels like I've slept on it for a long time. Wish me luck.
I think my biggest limitation is under-charging people because of a lack of self confidence. I have to say your videos inspire me to try harder - at the end I always feel like "Yes! Let's have a go, you can do this!" Thank you for that!
I understand you so well! I was in the same situation for so long. And guess what? just when I started to respect my fees, is when clients started to respect my work. I know is hard to say no when we need the money. But sometimes, is necessary to prove a point so we can be respected. 🙏🏼 And thank you so much! I'm very happy to know that my videos make you feel that way. I love that. Keep it up and trust more, clients can notice that as well. 😍 Big love!❤️
You're not alone, when it comes to graphic design, sometimes I feel like I may over charge and the client runs away or under value my work, but as education never ends...we shall definitely get to peak of this mountain
As a self employed mechanic for a lifetime (and part time photographer) One thing I have noticed throughout my career is that you will find that most people are actually prepared to pay more for quality workmanship well executed.. This applies equally to photography and the end result as much as to my line of work.. So don't be afraid to charge a proper rate.. Oh and full marks to Laura who inspired me to write your reply : )
I'm a London based photographer and I have a YT channel in Italian. Always wanted to expand my field and start an English channel since I have a lot to share. Been thinking a lot about my accent and pronounciation, which are not perfect, but now I know I just have to start and see how it goes. Thanks for what you shared in this video!
I was told to focus on only one niche but I've dabbled quite a bit. I started with astrophotography, to taking pics of animals (mainly my dogs playing), to automotive/moto, to now doing macro. I don't shoot any of those the same way as one another and each one really makes me have to learn more about my camera, my skills as well as any post processing since it feels like a much different process and I feel like trying everything makes you better overall. Sure you can like one or two categories and focus your time on that but it's really beneficial as a newbie to try it all!
GRACIAS GRACIAS GRACIAS ❤
Thank you Laura for your thoughts. You are the first, who tells not to focus on a single niche. Thank you very much for that! You are so right, because being versatile saved my butt during the pandemic. If had listened to the business coaches who claim to know it better, I would'nt work as a photogropher anymore. But doing portraits, vintage, corporate, weddings and some interior shoots helped me do gain a steady income. And: It is fun to take photos in different branches and not to shoot portrait after portrait after portrait.
Im in a time where i absolutely love to go forward as a photographer but im so scared of all the things you mentioned. I love this video! It totally changed my mind now.
I’ve always heard the advice of "You can't be a jack-of-all-trades!" which can be true, but also as being passionate with art and making a living off of it. You go Laura! 💕💕💕
I'm coming out today from a very frustrating experience at work, and I'm at that point where I have the chance to decide If I want to make photography more than just a hobby I really love. Thank you for all the valuable information and the positive vibes. This encouraging video comes up at maybe the worst day of the year to me, and I can't be more grateful. Gracias gracias miles! Hey, Laura! I love your genuine heart for helping people. I'm convinced it's one of the main reasons your channel is so successful...people appreciate your sincerity and selflessness. Big Love back to you! ♥
Hi Gerald! This mean a lot! ❤️ Thank you so much for such nice words! I really appreciate them and it's so good to know, really. Big big love to you too! ❤️🙏🏼
Absolutely amazing. 17:17 minutes worth spending even for someone who is not looking into starting a career in photography but any other field. Really appreciate the effort you put into making this wonderfully informative yet concise piece of advice in an attractive form. I truly value the idea of giving back to the industry, and this is a brilliant example of such effort. Thank you for sharing your inspiring ideas and I wish you all the best for the new year and years to come. ❤🙏 🇱🇰
You’re so inspiring! I’ve also studied graphic design, but after years of working as a designer I realised I totally prefer photography (and drawing). And to write music. I like too many things, that’s the problem 😅 anyway, great video, thanks a lot! 🌷
It only took one video of yours to get me to subscribe. I can hear the passion in your voice. I know you just want to help aspiring photographers. And it's just so refreshing to see and hear that. I learned a lot in just one video. Thank you so much
Hello Laura! I am so happy I found your page. You have taught me so much and I’m looking forward to learning way more! I am leaving the corporate world. I have been working as a freelance video camera operator for corporate conferences. I work with very specific companies for the moment but I am looking to expand my client list. I guess the biggest fear is believing my own company is legitimate enough to present to others now that I want to work with parties that may be different or smaller, but your video gave me an idea on who I can reach out to take their free photos for their brand! My biggest fault is my portfolio is not big enough, however I am working on it at the moment. I would like to create more cinematic content than the normal talking heads that I am used to shooting. I love being able to make people feel beautiful with my photos. Seeing others smile at themselves fills me with purpose.
Hi Aracely! I LOVE reading this! yes! I can see your passion just through this comment and let me tell you, that passion and purpose HELPS a lot. My clients really love feeling my passion as I always over deliver, I have fun with them, and they can see how much I love photography. So go for it! Now just worry about making a good cinematic portfolio that defines your style and then start approaching. As you've been freelancing as a camera operator, I'm sure you know a lot of people in the creative industry. So that's a plus! 😍❤️
Great video and advice for beginners! Another overlooked and misunderstood route is using stock photography to break into the business and getting name brands under your belt. Yes, it pays pennies at first and it is very frustrating. But if you stick it out, it can be very lucrative. I have shot for some big name brands thanks to stock photography, but you gotta be patient and also be willing to do the research for industry trends and needs. Im now making a timeline within the next year or so to leave my 40hr a week job as the stock gig alone is finally starting to pay off.
in order to become a successful creator you have to combine your craftwork and business, that's the reality. I learned this from this video. So i'll invest in myself to improve my value and educate myself to know how to provide it as well. thx for the wisdom!
Hi Laura I loved this one more than any of these online videos about starting photography. Really amazing how you gave me the mindset I needed since months. Subscribed !
Tu eres fantástica, que energía, been taking pictures of live performances for a while, as a hobby, but I’m now getting paid, never thought it will happen and now I don’t know how to take it to the next level, until now thanks to u, found your videos a while ago and now mi amigo and I started to put up a small home studio, making a home page and just using all that positive energy that you are giving away through this channel, thanks, really appreciate.

Hi Laura! You’re video was great & so much information provided by you. I got into photography as a passion to shoot for fun which started with landscape & Street/City photography in 2021. I slowly got introduced to portrait photography through portrait meet ups in the Bay Area and I fell in love with shooting portraits. My Instagram & TikTok both have mixed content from all types of photography and sometimes I notice landscape posts do much better then others. I really want to excel in my portrait photography focusing on life style & story telling portraits with the creative touch to it. Any tips or advice? I’m glad your video popped up 🙌🏼
It looks like a destiny that UA-cam recommened me this video😊 I am an exmodel, it to be honest, it was not my decision, but the industy's one. Was not easy to accept and see other perspectives. I realized that my experience of being on the other side of the camera could be a great advantage. Now i am studying doing just first steps. But you with your honesty and friendliness really inspire. Thank you!
Hola Laura!
ok first of all I can hear you talk all day long, second.. thank you! Just started using my camera for something other than my own music content and it landed me a content creator role at my boxing gym I go to. Hoping it can open up more opportunities in the near future. So your insight is much appreciated.
Hello Laura… Great video especially focusing our intention for 2023. I do agree with you by being versatile in photography, and have the confidence that we can make it. A portfolio is a must for a photographer, so creating a website is great to show your work. 📸💯🤘🏾
Hola Wise! I’m glad you agree with the main points I talk about. Being versatile helps me A LOT. So it’s one of the best advices I can give. And as you said, a portfolio, is a must! 🥰 Big love Wise! There is a new video coming in the private community next week! 😍🙏🏼
I shoot with a Sony a6000 and only 3 lenses. I've used it for 4 years now for portrait photography and landscape. I don't really advertise that I am a photographer but I want to try and go full time. I have definitely had paid shoots but I stopped for awhile. Working on getting a new client base. This is a nice reminder for me❤
Omg thank you so much for this video, I honestly didn’t know how to start or things like that. I love photography and I’ve always wanted to do a freelance and this video has helped me to face my fears and start doing photography.
Really like what you said about the home studio - there’s no shame in it when the results are BOMB!! Getting my own place really soon and this is my first home project 👏🏾👏🏾
So glad I found you when I did. I’m amazed at your advice and ability to say just what I needed to hear. Your advice was very helpful and motivating and comforting to hear. Thank you for providing so much information and genuine desire to help those starting out lacking the confidence and courage to go for it and making excuses for ourselves. No more! This is what I want and I WILL do amazing because I care about my art and people so there’s no way I could fail. Thank you for helping me believe in me ❤
I just love this! I live in a tiny rural area here in the states. I decided to start photography for real because it’s what I always wanted to do going back to high school. A local gal reached out to me and wanted to start a business together and it’s been amazing- she has all the gear I didn’t have and has been happy to share her equipment and knowledge with me to bring me up to her level. Photographers in our area primarily only specialize in family sessions/senior portraits/weddings. I want to take it a step further and get into real estate, and commercial photos to be more well versed as a team. I was worried that doing that would confuse people about what we will specialize in but you’ve assured me that it’s ok to not put your business into one specific box- so thank you! 🤍
Omg thanks for saying that you don’t need to find just one niche! I’ve recently started my freelance photography business and I’m so happy to do different types of jobs (events, branding, lifestyle). I honestly find it more rewarding and a greater opportunity to improve my skills.
I watch hours of photography and videography videos a day studying to grow my business, and you have been one of if not the most informative I’ve come across, instant subscribe 👌
I watched your video to the end even though I have no intentions of becoming a professional photographer but just do it for hobby. You are so interesting and inspiring to hear. I am pleased you won your challenge of becoming a freelance photographer in London, you did a big leap of faith and probably did some sacrifices in the beginning but at the end it was all worth it. Well done!
I’ve got to say, Laura, that I feel like it was always MYSELF holding ME back from becoming a successful photographer. I have my degree from university, I have years under my belt with my small business, I have plenty of content to post on my website but the FEAR of failure has stopped me in my tracks plenty of times. And a lot of it was so damaging that I’ve restarted so many times while looking for other work. And I’m so tired. So my advice to others who are just starting out would be to ignore the fear and dive in head first and just know that all of this takes time, your energy and effort but it’ll all pay off when you see the smiles on your clients face when they see the end result. And yes, I’ve seen it many times… I just allowed the dark cloud to rain on my own parade. Let go, let flow! Cheers!
Laura, this is brilliant for me. Thankyou. I’m very late in the photography industry at 44 as I have my usual 9-5 job but the last couple of years has accelerated my ambition and I’m ready to take that step. Just in the process of getting my website set up and being in the media industry since I was 20, I’ve built up some good contacts. My niche, like you, is everything and I was worried about this. I’ve only just found my editing style after struggling a year or so but honestly, this has been so helpful.
I am so glad I found your channel. I realized most of the photographers I subscribe to were all male, I’ve been searching for a female voice. Thank you for making this channel.
This is actually the best video I’ve ever seen. I wanna cry tbh 😢cuz I relate so much. I got so discouraged because nobody wanted to give me any advice. Idk why most photographers gatekeep information because they see others as competitors. But now I realize I don’t even need them. This year I want to pursue it again. I gave up for a long time
That is THE BEST video i have ever seen for up and coming photographers! Sensational!! I make a small bit of money doing commercial photographic work but I always wonder if I could do it full time. Thank you for this information, it's really valuable.
I am super lost with photography.. I will restart photography again..I stuck somewhere for some years. I work basically as creative designer. Your experiences I can relate to me so much. I don't money from photography but I love to make something beautiful. Good to see your video..so much informative video. Great inspiration to start again. Thank you so much.🥰
this is an amazing video, once you get rid of the thing in your head that your dream isn't too far away, it starts happening. Going to uni for photography is a waste of money, everything i have learnt is on youtube right now! Free of charge. Thank you Laura this video is so good!
Laura you're the most genuine youtuber I've ever watched. I can't thank you enough not just for teaching me and inspiring me but also, because you really feel like a friend on the other side of the screen. Muchas gracias, ❤
100% Spot on! Go out and shoot what you love. You can make $$ at different types of photography. Learn and enjoy the process and you will grow not only as a photographer but in the business. Love this video!
I’m currently a full time product photographer but I’m wanting to do way more than taking photos of boring air conditioner parts. I didn’t even study commercial photography at College I studied documentary/photojournalist photography. I’ve been doing freelance work on the weekends and a lot of the advice you’ve given is what I’m slowly starting to do because of how scary it is! You’re so right about just making the move and doing stuff. This video is so helpful to people who need that push to just get out there. Definitely will be looking into your channel!
Laura, I am learning so much from you and your channel. I was interested in photography and I was a bit scared due to not thinking I could do it with out schooling. I am more a portrait Photographer, but I shoot everything I see. I want to thank you for mentoring me into this fun and profitable life. I love the way you talk about photography and being a good photographer. I hope to aspire to your level and maybe it won't take me as long with your help. Again Thanks and keep up the work please.
I really love that you decry the “find your niche” mindset. Like you, I love doing a wide variety of photography, and always had a problem with the idea of me just shooting one kind of thing (maybe because of my ADHD 🤔) I’ve thankfully gone past that mindset and have been working on my portfolio to create my website, which’ll include portraits, landscapes, travel, etc.. and I can’t imagine just going with one focus. I think too many folks get stuck in that headspace!
THIS IS TRUTH! as a photography dinosaur that has shot a million things in a million ways and taken most jobs knowing I would learn what I needed as I shot it… this is the whole truth! You start where you are- and don’t limit yourself- it’s amazing what happens when we just work and create within the constrains we have… it makes us more creative. And the work gets better and better- when you DO IT. I love this!!
I LOVE this. This came to me at the right time, and how I know is I have searched so much for a video like this and nothing popped up until randomly today as a youtube suggestion. I decided to take my photography serious on Father’s Day of last year and I feel I have done so much yet not enough up to now. I got Squarespace the day after, I work at Starbucks so I have plenty of partners to have photo shoots with and I have had so much fun. This helped me in so many ways I can’t even describe it, and I am ready to see how far I can take this and document my journey as best as I can. Thank you so much for this.
Awww thank you so much! 😍 I’m glad you liked this video and you enjoy my channel. Thanks for being here and taking the time to drop such a nice comment! 😊❤️
100% agree. I am very on the budget and "training" for 4 months. However the amount of time I spent on learning and shooting is huge. I noticed that I am well above those that are training for two or more years. Practice is good thing, but it must be consistent. However there is one thing that rookies like me are ignoring. Everyone are thinking about picture quality. How about copyrights, public liability insurance, photography law, special permission like from National Trust, and finally how to run business, claim Your taxes, etc. You can make the best pictures with the best gear, but without these other things Your business will not last long. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Thank you, thank you Laura! Laura is NOT asking you to pay for this advice. I am not a photographer BUT there are points Laura makes here about confidence, letting go of the doubters, self-sabotage, thinking you need money to start anything!!! We are now in an age where you can start your passion at ANY age… if you need to earn money you can do your passion in your spare time… If the main job ends via redundancy or something .. you may be able to work for a small business or a charity for NOTHING for a while with the aim of acquiring EXPERIENCE! Again Laura makes valid points around targeting smaller businesses/brands. ❤

I avoided going into photo business thinking I wasn't good enough... Hope you're getting better
I’ve probably seen a lot of photography videos, but none has inspired me in a positive manner like the one you did ❤️ Thank you for this!
So many people are amazed I'm not full time it's just having the confidence to take the big step. This does help thank you.
I am so happy that I had the chance to view this video. I almost quit, with huge frustration as a freelancer photographer. GRACIAS!!
This is the BEST guide I've seen on youtube so far. Covers all the bases. Thanks Laura! From just one video I can say you're so inspiring ❤️
Thank yo so much! 😍 So nice to read this. I'm glad this video helped and I hope you enjoy my channel! 🥰
Saludos desde Munich.
Simplicity is the best creative gear. Love your CHANNEL.
Finally. I have a camera and I want to get started in this photography journey. Thanks Laura for being my guide.
Awww exciting timesss! 😍 You’re most welcome! I hope you can learn from my videos. Big love and keep it up! I still remember when I started my photography journey… You’ll LOVE it! 🥰❤️
@@LauraBC I actually thought I needed to get the best L lenses, strobes and equipment to get started. From your advice, I'll start off with what I have and look for my ideal clients via email. Thank you a lot Laura. I really appreciate it 💕
The best photographer/teacher on UA-cam!!!
What camera do you use
I’m in tears, thank you for this video. I’m so scared and I think that my work is not good enough. Gracias.
I’m in love with her. Not only because she’s astonishing beautiful, but mostly because her attitude. She is the embodiment of the “do it” thing
After years watching UA-cam. This is the first video I have liked. Thank you. Could not agree more with your points.
Awww thank you so much! 😍 I'm glad you liked the video and agree with the points I talk about here. :) Big love!
This hit home more than any other video I've watched/post I've read about freelancing. Thank you for making this.
Hi Laura
I loved this one more than any of these online videos about starting photography.
Laura, muchas gracias por el conocimiento, dedicación y generosidad al crear estos videos super útiles que me ayudan a no darme por vencida y poner más energías en desarrollar mi carrera como fotógrafa. Tus palabras y buena vibra me motivan muchísimo. Una argentina en USA! 💕
Guapaaa! Muchísimas gracias por tu super comentario! 😍 Me alegro un montón de que mis videos te ayuden! Te mando un abrazo gigante desde Londres a USA. ❤️🙏🏼 Gracias por estar aquí y disfrutar de mis videos. :)) xx
I knew it. The voices gave me doubt. You have just inspired me. Thank you
Muy bien explicado, tienes toda la razón. Muchas gracias por actualizarnos con consejos más actuales en el mundo del freelance!👍
Gracias! Me alegro un montón de que te haya gustado!
one of the best videos of its kind you'll see on youtube. Bravo Laura BC 🙏
I’m glad your video popped up 🙌🏼
It looks like a destiny that UA-cam recommened me this video😊
I am an exmodel, it to be honest, it was not my decision, but the industy's one.
I've listened to what you're saying, and it's so true that getting stuck in our heads is one of the biggest fear starting out.
Fav photography channel right now love her pacing and information and voice!
This is kinda video that I like to see. Very authentic and passionate. Leaving a comment to boost algorithm, keep up with a good work!
Cheers!
Thank you. I was stuck for awhile because of the one niche mindset but I'm versatile and I love it best. So, thanks for the video.
I'm a beginner in freelance Photographer, this is a boost for me to keep pursuing my dream as a freelance Photographer
I sense the genuine want to help…thanks for this video! it’s very encouraging and the insight/details on how to shoot helps
Te amo! Tu valor y audacia te han llevado a donde tu quieres! Eres un ejemplo de la frase; "El cielo se Toma, por asalto!" Bemdiciones y mas exito!
Thanks you LauraBC for your highly informative episode ! I'm a first viewer of your channel and now a every episode watcher! GRACIAS A TI!
Thanks for the knowledge, I was really feeling discouraged with my photography but after watching this video I feel inspired.
Love the energy 💪🏾
This is what it's all about! Helping people to reach the seemingly impossible heights that fear sometimes holds us back from reaching!!!
I really love that you decry the “find your niche” mindset. Like you, I love doing a wide variety of photography, and always had a problem with the idea of me just shooting one kind of thing (maybe because of my ADHD 🤔)
I’ve thankfully gone past that mindset and have been working on my portfolio to create my website, which’ll include portraits, landscapes, travel, etc.. and I can’t imagine just going with one focus.
I love your channel!!! You are incredible! Thank you for sharing this video! Every video you make, inspires me sooo much!!
This is interesting as I was just thinking about niches.
Also great to hear more UK photographers on the YT scene!
Iam learning photography just surfing UA-cam just saw your video ...earn through photography great job I loved it. Thanks alot. Love from India.
You are such a ray of sunshine 🤗 Thank you!!!
i’m loving your go-getter attitude ❤ soy peruana y me encanta tu actitud!!! fan #1!
Oh my gosh! YES!! Sticking to one or two niches sounds so boring and hard for me. I love so many niches!!!
I have only watched two of your videos so far and you have been more than helpful 😊 Thank you so much
Thank you, thank you Laura! ❤
The quality is a must, I agree, my down side is sales, thanks for sharing
Just discovered you, i am so thankful!!
😍 Glad you found my channel. Welcome to the community! I hope you enjoy my weekly videos! 🥰📸
I'm so glad i found your channel , i love, love your energy and the way you explain everything ❤
I also have a background in graphic design but wants to be a photographer. You are so inspiring.
I just experienced a powerful jolt of inspiration from that video! It was truly impactful and motivating. Thank you for sharing it! ❤
Thank you so much for this! Switching from hobbyist to professional photography and this is exactly what I needed to hear.
Hey great to hear. I´m a graphic Designer myself and I switched to photography. But tbh... I don´t want to shoot EVERYTHING. But what I discovered for me is cocktail and beverage photgraphy and I´m starting to focus on that too.
as a graphic design graduate and photography enthusiast, i like and subscribe. Just want to be a photography artist that's all
