    Thanks so much for this excellent video, Rick. Does the amount (i.e. power) of flash you need to blast at the area surrounding the window vary according to a) how much light is coming in from the outside; and b) whether the exterior is made up of, say, foliage within a couple of meters from the window or, alternatively, distant hills?

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  3 роки тому

      Loose rule, ambient maybe 1/10sec and flash at least 1/20sec to control ambient color cast but often flash is 1/80 or higher. These settings change

    Rich I found your channel 3 days ago and I've been watching your one after the other, absolutely love them! You explain every well and I think any photographer is learning something in your videos! I was having a hard time with windows doing HDR and then I found your flambiant technique, it was a game changer for me. I noticed you are rarely using window pulls, could you explain when do you have to use them? Is it only if you want to have a real clear view of the exterior? Thanks a lot and keep up the excellent work!

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  5 років тому +1

      The goal is to get it in one shot.. and also for your flash exposure you expose for the brightest thing in the room and that is usually the window view.. so if I can't capture the exposure I want because its too bright I do a window pull which is basically a separate exposure just for the window and Darken mode method helps you from needing to select the window frame and masking in..

    Rich, this method is awesome and I can see using it on occasion, but almost every room I shoot has a window and the customer is seldom paying more than $150-$200 for the whole shoot. It takes too much time to take all the pics and then go into photoshop and go through this process on every room. Thoughts/suggestions ?

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  4 роки тому

      My suggestion is to try and expose for the window do you don’t need to do a window pull. With that said I suggest you do more than your current jobs pay. Look forward to getting better higher paying clients in the near future and those clients will be looking at your past work as examples why they will choose to pay more for better photos.

  • @YoungNino2017
    @YoungNino2017 3 роки тому +1

    The ambient shot's color balance is way off and de-saturated, when you brush it in over the flash with the yellow wall the whole photo looks splotchy, hence why you eventually notice the flow is too high. But still, they don't match, so it just looks like you de-saturated parts of the wall randomly

    Hi Rich! I am trying to move to using a monolight/flash vs straight HDR to get the window pulls. I came across this video and had one question...I went to your gear page and I see a lot of monolights there. I see you do weddings and other stuff besides real estate. I only do architecture and real estate so I was wondering if I have to buy one of those moonlights - the 300, 400 or 600 - that you list for a good range of property types which one would you choose? TTL or non TTL? HSS? I do anywhere from 2bed/2 bath condos to oceanfront homes with high ceilings. Most have nice views of the beach or waterways so I have to really up my window pulls. If you could recommend a good, all purpose light I will be most grateful! Thanks so much for your help!

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  4 роки тому

      At least for me I can get most every window pull with a single Speedlight but you might want a stronger light like the new XPLOR 300

    • @Serenitees
      @Serenitees 4 роки тому

      Rich Baum So the 600 or 400 would be overkill in your opinion? I have tried over and over with the Speedlight and can’t get the windows overexposed. Can you just point a monolight at the window, turn it on and shoot without a trigger or do you have to flash it? I don’t want to spend $500 and buy the wrong thing. Thanks so much.

So I am confident you understand, you can still find them for free or you can buy them, and please believe me when I say many people would rather just buy presets than watch a video and try to understand what they are and take the few minutes to actually make your own preset for free,,

I have a question : how do you deal when making the flash shot for window pull when you have direct light coming through the window ? It's okay to over expose the frame when there's shade over the view, but I struggle when the sun in coming directly in front of me, it just gets the whole image way overexposed ! Do I need more power from my light source in order to contrast and win direct light ? Please help !! And thanx again mate!

    I've used your window pull technique at almost every shoot but recently I upgraded to a Canon 5d and I use a Godox XPro trigger. For some reason, I'll expose for the windows to be dark, and when I trigger my lights, my camera is auto compensating or something and brings the exposure back up!!! I have no idea why this happens and the weird thing is its like it only happens in big rooms I really have no idea how to control it, but it's bumming me out that I can't deliver these window pulls as well, and have resorted now to selecting out windows sometimes (AHHH!)

    What does it mean when the darken mode still paints across bright window frame?

      MAsterTroll to make this work you need to flash the window to over expose everything you don’t want masked in then you need to be sure your in darken mode and black brush needs to be selected.
      I also offer coaching to help people get this concept. If your interested just send me an e mail to rich@richbaum.com

      I’m sorry you’re not having any luck with these techniques, usually it’s something simple that the photographer is not doing the proper way. I can suggest private coaching where we can go over any technique and I guarantee you will learn it very quickly, so if you’re interested just send me an email to rich@richbaum.com and I’ll reply and we can set up a coaching session

    Honestly, this technique takes so long and consumes so many computer resources that I just don't see it being feasible in RE use (for my market). I cannot even imagine having to do this 20 times a day for one property, let alone sometimes 5 that I shoot per day.

      It's actually fast and easy.. well worth it for my market

      Rich Baum how long do you spend per house, including shooting time? For an average house doing 3 frame HDR I am done in 15-20 minutes, taking about 20 images. If I had to shoot and edit this way I’d probably quadruple the time required. No extra money in that for me, unfortunately.

      The "Extra Money" comes from higher paying clients that will not accept HDR images.. It's well worth the extra time and effort to make far more $$$

      @@RichBaum sure, but out here in my market that is not an option, so the technique is not suitable for RE. For commercial accommodation like holiday resorts and hotels, yes it would be essential, but that is an entirely different type of client with entirely different expectations. HDR is the perfect solution for RE work and done right it will save the photographer a lot of time and the realtor a lot of money.

    It took too long to get started. The title tells what it's about. Start with "A window pull is..." Keep it concise. This is youtube. The viewer is surrounded by distractions. They're looking for a reason to click away. The content started at 3:30, way too late.
