"Theres a restricted airspace around a military base 15 miles from here. I hope I don't get signal jammed" *Flies 15.1 miles away and immediately falls out of the air.* I know thats not how it works, but how good is that.
That was exactly my thoughts, how coincidental that was lol. I think it may have had a motor issue, or, as he said about the unplugging of the servo for that camera, maybe the same thing happened to the Aileron servos, as it was unable to recover. Even a massive gust wouldn't necessarily do EXACTLY what it was doing. Glad to see he got it back though!
The one thing that actually strikes me the most in this video is how peaceful and calm you remain (like looking at the beetles, flowers, surroundings...) and turning it into a funny search riddle even after loosing a quite valuable RC plane in the middle of nowhere for 2 days..... Make it all look normal... And eventually keep an interest for the nature! Your composure is astonishing!
Honestly I think this is the first time I have ever watched a 30 minute UA-cam video and not skipped any of it! :) Good video and glad you found your plane!
Me too. I like how spontaneously all kind of random stuff is happening. Nothing scripted here, it's just life. Excellent videos have around 20:1 like-dislike ratio. This one has 60:1. Nuff said.
Pretty much. That VS Hawaii, hawaii is an easy win. (though parts of the big island look pretty similar). Still, its a pretty area in a stark kind of way, it just loses when put up against a place like Hawaii (and lets be realistic, most places lose against Hawaii). I love Kentucky but wouldn't mind moving out west. The lack of humidity alone would be nice ;)
Great video, very enjoyable , of course I knew you would find the plane, as you had already used HD footage in the video, but the suspense of how you would fine it was great.

Great video, very optimistic, It's amazing how you turned a bad day into an adventure. I enjoyed watching all of it. Your optimism and love of adventure is contagious. :)
Woah, when you panned over and showed the snowy mountains in the distance, I was not expecting that! Being in a big desert and then being able to see a huge mountain with snow in the distance, incredible! What an amazing area. Loving the great visuals and production quality of your videos!
@15:35 What the sign says: "You may use a variety of techniques for carp fishing, including angling, archery (EXCLUDING crossbows)..." What he reads: "It says you can shoot the fish with your crossbow"
Very typical human behavior to read whatever they wanna read. I work as an electrician and one day i was called out to figure out why the lights on the outside of a government building wasnt working. After a couple of huors of investigative work i found a switch wich specifically said "dont turn off!" As you can imagine the switch was off xD
Looking at the paused video (17:49) I see amp draw of only 0.4A and the FPV video is blacked out, but at least the Vector is still in RTH mode. So perhaps the ESC or motor failed, possibly taking down the 5V supply to the FPV cam and servos at the same time... hard to say for sure exactly. The recover was really cool though!
Sorry for answering so late: I had a similar problem where my esc burned down.. luckily i run my battery through my fc and that way my servos still worked :/
Glad you finally found it and many thanks for the great story! You should definitely consider getting an amateur radio license, you already know a lot about electronics and practical RF applications, so it may not be a big deal to pass the exam. You would then be able to legally put a high power GPS beacon on your planes that even when lying on the ground you can still hear them from miles away with a notebook, an RTL-SDR dongle for 10 bucks and freeware for decoding the transmission=location ... unless they crash with that kind of impact your plane did :-) Nothing seems to survive that ! Since these transmitters send RF in very short programmable intervals, the high power RF bursts will not even be noticeable on the overall power consumption ... so it may transmit for hours if in difficult terrain. Please let me know if you need and information on amateur radio or these GPS transmitters, though I am sure there are plenty of hams in and around Salt Lake City that could practically help you, while I am here in Munich, Germany
An awesome adventure in itself, I loved this video, and what you represent. Thanks for sharing your beautiful location in all its desolate glory and bringing us along for the journey.
WAIT A MINUTE!! Why didn't you put the actual moment of impact video at the end after you found it!?! Did that like not get recorded in the recovered micro SD chip?
Likely not recorded. If the camera drops out, resets or loses power, it can even corrupt the entire file. But otherwise can just lose the last few seconds that it was still in the process of compressing & writing to the SD card.
roidroid is right. If the GoPro loses power, or SD card is ejected, and then you do a recovery of the video file, you usually lose the last 10 seconds or so. Means you never see the crash that destroyed the camera.
Dude, I first watched this video years ago and it encouraged me to try the hobby. Since then I've watched dozens of your videos and totally enjoy them, keep up the good work!

Since you found most parts except the motor at the crash site, it may be that you lost the motor while still in the air. A motor loss in flight would be pretty catastrophic. Aside from losing power, if the motor was dangling by the wires, the prop might chew up the fuselage; if the motor came off completely, it suddenly becomes a very nose heavy glider.
Yeah that happened to me once everything on the plane worked but the moter fell out I have no idea how but it basically full power nose dived because it was dangling by wires and the place was DESTROYED
Or it may be the instability wasn't caused by the same thing that led to the crash. Perhaps whatever was causing the instability/spiraling led to the engine mount coming off. Hobby grade planes aren't very robust so one problem may have created another. I doubt there is enough evidence to really figure out what actually happened, but it is a useful exercise to speculate about failure scenarios.
either way it's exactly what i imagine a shot down drone to look like also the debris field seems to indicate that it broke before impact and the tail section was utterly destroyed while the middle of the fuselage was mostly intact and if it hit nose down the tail should be in better condition and also not 20ft from the rest of the plane which leads me to believe the prop exploded or detached violently taking the tail section with it because if you notice as it nose diving to the earth the autopilot is using some roll adjustments but no pitch indicating that the tail section was ether missing or severely damaged

Then you're like, "Maybe at least the memory card is ok." One time, I cartwheeled a scratchbuilt quadcopter on a gravel road and couldn't even find that much to be happy about, lol. Nice crash adventure! I have several points to make: 1. Make a moxon antenna. This Diamond whip is good but not enough. 2. You do not need the LP filter on the TX. 3. Get a GPS tracker. 4. You do not need CP - with a tuned dipole and a biquad on the ground you will get much better video feed.

don't think so: after the first instability, the plane continued at normal cruise speed and current (at 9:52)

What a fantastic video! Thanks for showing me your lovely state! I am so impressed by the flying and the hunt for the lost plane. Keep it up!
This is the first 30mins long video on UA-cam i watched without getting bored.
Daniel this is like a full on FPV Documentary...
I could watch forever...sorry for your loss..
What a cool place you live in
Cheers
Brett
Thanks for taking us along the ride. What a place.
Admirable tenacity sir! Well done.
Beautiful landscapes. And I admire you being so calm about losing a plane. I am usually way angrier.
Dude, glad you found your plane and that the battery did not start a fire.
One of the best videos I have watched on YT, I am glad you got your RC stuff back and the video was a nice look at some of Iosepa's history.
Just watched the whole video! Really great to see you back Daniel! These are the videos I've missed so much!
Another great video and nice recovery of the Skyhunter remains. The search was as interesting as the flight itself, excellent narrative!
Waaaoooo, what an experience!... well that's part of the hobby... at least you recovered your plane's wreck!... Thumbs up for your video! Hope to see you back in the air soon! Greetings from Douglas, Arizona 👍👍👍
Sorry to hear about your plane. Interesting video. Thanks. Glad you recovered your plane.
Nice crash adventure! I have several points to make:
1. Make a moxon antenna. This Diamond whip is good but not enough.
2. You do not need the LP filter on the TX.
3. Get a GPS tracker.
4. You do not need CP - with a tuned dipole and a biquad on the ground you will get much better video feed.
Your videos are incredibly therapeutic. Thanks for taking us along for your ideas. 😁
Great to see you still making content, Daniel. This was a fun adventure!
Another great one. I'm glad you were persistent and found the plane. I would have spent another two days looking for the motor, though. That must have been a pretty good crunch.
Great video, really enjoyed watching it and your comments about the surrounding area. Happy Flying
I didnt know 30 minutes could go by so fast, very enjoyable video my guy!
Great adventures been watching you for a few years now never tire of your new and interesting adventures thx.
Suprisingly very entertaining video, sorry for your loss and what outstanding views!
Awesome video. I really enjoyed watching this, especially as the story-line unfolded. I'm sorry for your loss.
Really enjoyed this video. Good detective work.
Cool video man! I lost track of your channel for a while, but I'm glad you are still making videos!
2 years on. Good video mate, enjoyed the whole thing
Love your videos! Thanks for sharing this adventure! :-)
P.s. I bet it's amazing out there for looking at the stars!
you could put corner reflectors on the plane so you can easily find it, NASA put a corner reflector on the moon and can see its reflection from earth.
This was a very entertaining video to watch. Thanks for sharing, dude. And sorry about the skyhunter falling out of the sky. It was a very nice rescue and recovery mission though.
Fun voyage with you, man. I am very jealous of the equipment. Keep on Keepin-on.
This was a pretty cool video, strangely quite interesting to watch all the way through. What an oddly fascinating place to fly haha! Well done for the vid and for finding your plane!
