- Case 261: Shari Smith & Debra May Helmick (Part 2)
** Content warning: Sexual assault **
[Part 2 of 2]
When nine-year-old Debra May Helmick was abducted from the front of her family’s trailer in Richland County, South Carolina, there were immediate concerns that her kidnapping could be linked to the recent murder of Lexington teenager, Shari Smith. Those fears were confirmed when Shari’s sister Dawn received a chilling phone call directing authorities to Debra May’s body.
The news that a serial killer was on the loose had South Carolina residents gripped by fear. As the investigation ramped up, a breakthrough clue finally emerged.

Can't believe that a criminal kept on being release knowing he would re offend again very sad
That's what made me angry very angry always let out too early these criminals the judicial system gets it wrong and the parole board.
Had he been kept in jail longer perhaps these murders would never have happened.
It's time citizens took the initiative
Good old Bible Belt justice system
Your content is top self! You should have way more subscribers! Narration and delivery are perfect!
The podcast has a huge following on Spotify etc..
just found them and im addicted
Narration is excellent bcus he looks like hes taken it from his podcast .....but as a You tube vid it fails ...his competitors use crime scene footage with court room footage ....this chap is being alittle lazy
@@Ghost_Rider_786I'm happy without all the footage, I like to listen to him while I'm doing things
I remember stumbling across your channel, looking for an excellent true crime content.
I believe you had maybe 3K subscribers at the time. I knew after the 1st episode that your channel was going to be big, huge.
I liked that I still don't know the name of the narrator. Just simply anonymous.
The other difference was you were the first true crime that cared enough to list help numbers for those who are suffering.
I thought people will find this channel fast and it will grow and then sadly change.
But, you guys haven't changed anything. Still the same format, music intro, same anonymous narrator.
Congratulations on making the best true crime channel.
ive been waiting for part 2. thanks
530am and I'm here for it!! Good morning everyone
This is the very best version of this tragedy I've heard. Thank you for sharing this with us.
It's nice to know people in tc actually care about the victims.
I listened to it last week (never miss an episode) but the same won’t go for everyone. Think you guys should put the link to part one in the description here. Thank you, as always.
Part 1??
This is part 1, 🤔isn't it?

^ This is part 1, released last week
Sorry for the late reply, and I’m sure you already found it, but (in case anyone reading hasn’t) part one is right before this if you go to the channel’s video tab
I've recently discovered your podcasts and have binged on them ever since! I've got lots to go and have subscribed to your channel. I don't know why you haven't reached higher subscribers yet. Your content is incredible. So glad I found you.
After his first offense, and certainly after his second offense he should have been put down like a rabid dog
Civilized society we can't do that. As much as I despise this man and wish he could have been stopped before.
We simply can't do that.
@@cannedsquasher5923 rubbish
This is so similar to David Meirhofer that I had to check it wasn't the same guy.
The similarities in their cases are astounding.
I'm so impressed with how accurate the fbi profile was wow
Thank you for always uploading to YT for us YT die-hards ❤❤
This channel 💕 and Trace Evidence Podcast 💕. Streets ahead in detail, delivery and accuracy.
Thank u so much for the conclusion of this case and to know justice was served in the end
Whoever makes those illustrations for your channel knows how to perfectly capture poignancy. They are all so evocative!
Absolutely.
What illustrations??
Early easy Saturday morning means peacefully listening to a Casefile Upload.
I rather he gotten life in prison. So the other inmates could bash him up.
Yes, but the weirdo took the electric chair 🪑
Nice spoiler 👍

Always brilliant, Casefile ♥️
R.I.P to both of these young ladies that was cruelly taken way too soon , fly high beautiful angels 😇😇 xoxo
omg i literally checked every day every few hours for this episode...since days. jaa the concept of weekdays and stuff- I dont get it lol
Saturday morning here in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Now this is a great 👍 way to start a morning.
These stories make you want to never let your kids go outside
Me, never letting my kids go outside 😳
Being a kid myself in 1985 (I was 12 years old), my younger sis & I were NEVER EVER allowed to play on our driveway - only in our family backyard, where Mom, Dad & our maternal grandparents (whom had visited us almost monthly) could be ensured of our safety, as long as both of us were easily visible.😉👍
Thanks Matey 👍
Yeah the whole point of not revealing where they were until days later was so the decomposition would ruin any DNA evidence And make them not know if he did or did not assault them
I grew up in Richland county not 1 mile from where Debra was kidnapped off of Old Percival Rd. I was 4 and this monster was a constant source of nightmares as I grew up and was able to understand what had happened.
I’ve never been this early. Thanks :)
The way case file presents its stories is very commendable no sensationalism in the narrator's voice.
I am so glad he got the death penalty he was acting the whole time I am sad that they couldn't find the bodies of the other girls before he died. Which he told the police where to look in some well but he was playing them. A cruel sadistic monster even admitting to the psychiatrist that he had obsessive thoughts about murdering women huge red flag but the judicial system was broken and he didn't stay in jail for very long even though the psychiatrist did indicate that he would commit further crimes worst of all on little innocent children unfathomable.
The judges and the parole board are to blame as well for not keeping him in jail longer. Unfathomable again I say. He was not sczophrenic otherwise how could he hold all those jobs he had. I also think the pornography industry has a lot to answer for rape crimes. That is my opinion. I feel so sad for the families loss of their children.
This is like a present! 🎁
The way my heart dropped so fucking fast when you said Sumter SC oh my GOD. I have BEEN IN THAT KFC SO MANY TIMES and I never knew a literal SERIAL KILLER had been there before I was even born oh my god I feel like I need to take a shower. What makes it worse is that my mom lived in Lexington when all of this was happening when she was in high school and actually drove by Shari's house with her friends after she was found. My grandparents live right near Two Notch road like I almost lost it when I heard that name and then you have to go and name SUMTER? fuck this i'm getting in the shower i need to scrub myself holy fuck
I have this playing in the background as im cleaning. Hear the number 205 837 and bought dropped muh duster, was the first 6 digits of my childhood number. Roti
How many americansive i trailer homes . Must be cheap but they seem To have so much weird crime
Used to be a cheaper way of living but nowadays even they are ridiculous. I guess there is often community living close to each other and they trust each other but that can mean trusting weirdos and liners who are looking for cheap digs. There’s not much privacy in those environments which means children/women/potential victims can be visible to predators.
Your tube videos have excellent presentation, despite the sad stories. "My heart goes out to the innocent victims and their families." Mental illness or not both deserve the death for murder and rape.
I really like your narration and content, but the music is distracting.
I think it helps me focus on the words better personally
Poor becky
'Eventually the driver stopped in a secluded area...'
If Larry hadn’t called the Smith family, could he still have been caught? Would he have gotten to Dawn instead of Debra?
I generally enjoy your content, but one part of this one was close to where I grew up, in Cherokee County GA. I mention this because I-85 does not go through Cherokee County, it is possible that it was suppose to be I-75. I understand this is not really that important. I does relate to details being correct/incorrect and that does matter.
What on earth had created this Bell?

Spotlessly clean bedrooms….
I hope the profilers always look at the “…upstanding parents”…
I watched two episodes. I found the number of times the invisible skydaddy and their impotent prayers were mentioned to be nauseating.
Okay dude we get it you’re a Redditor incel who thinks being an atheist makes him smarter than everyone else
Rude
When you find yourself missing a child or anyone you will be praying plenty yourself to the skydaddy . What a pathetic comment from an uncaring individual!
@@JohnChalmers617 Actually, no. Went through the loss of both parents last year, and didn't feel compelled to pray once. I had a lot of grief, mourning, and philosophical issues, not to mention therapy, but no need for religion. You probably won't believe it, but some of us can live through life's tragedies without belief in a higher power, and have no problems with disbelief. You should read some Carl Sagan for perspective.
@@thing_under_the_stairs You should be less of a massive cunt, I don't believe in a higher power either but there's a lot of ways people cope and manage with grief, it was the 80s, most people were raised Christian and access to any sort of widespread information about philosophy or even non-faith based therapy was much harder to come by than it is now. People didn't turn to a therapist as first instinct, they turned to their already existing support structures, which was usually church, or community and family which again, was predominantly Christian.
Did Shari Smith help Kara Robinson escape from Richard Evonitz?

repeated leniency from the judiciary
Masonic Lodge eh hmm 🤔
Im sure this works great as a Podcast .... but its not very good as a You Tube vid ... suggest u make the effort to add crime scene footage n court footage like all your competitors do ....
Up until today, i haven't noticed that it's the AI reading.
def not AI reading
What makes you say that?
I hate AI and normally click straight off a video when I pick it up. Hadn’t noticed it here - there are normally some dodgy pronunciations to give it away. I will listen closely.
It's not AI, this guy has been narrating these cases LONG before AI's were as usable as they are now (and they still are funky today). He's been doing this for 8 years now and he sounds the same as he did back then, just with better mic quality and more practiced.
@@kw2299 It's not, Casefile has existed since 2016 and the narrator has had more candid Q&A stuff. He's just Australian
All my prayers for the Jewish people affected by this hideous, evil terror attack..
You realize that is called virtue signalling? It's usually done by people who think that talking means virtue and not doing something virtuous, without expecting or wanting recognition.
Where has their religion been mentioned once? Stop being an idiot.
Wait the victims were jewish? Wow blew right past me. (Usually they're the ones committing the crimes, wait did I just say that?)
