@clippingin1593 yes agree used to ride with Otley cc and covered most of the r oads you ride and video Sadly die to illness, can't ride much these days, and enjoy watching the videos get out a bit up the Dales from Harrogate patley bridge way .have a great new year ✨️
The B6255 from Hawes to the viaduct is a ride in itself, especially when Inglebrough comes into view. The wind direction put me off heading up that way on sat, just waiting for a decent day.Great video as always.👍
It's as if it comes roaring off straight off the Irish Sea and Morecambe Bay, funnels between Ingleborough & Whernside then straight down Widdale. Wait for a calm day, or a NE'ly, and it's a different road altogether.
Great stuff! Thanks Ian. I'll put the full track up over a video sequence at some point - I rarely get beyond 30 secs for the intros. It was written and recorded about 8 years ago during my extended bike lay-off.
Cheers, I try to sprinkle a few bits and pieces into the commentary. 'Layers of history' is a phrase I've used before - the Mallerstang road closure meant I forgot about Pendragon Castle so I'll keep that for next time. I'm quite pleased with the accumulation - riding the big hills earlier in the week with one eye on the heart-rate monitor certainly helped. Especially as just a couple of weeks earlier I only logged 7 miles in 7 days... haha.
Great effort sir and another wonderful video. We do a similar ride, train to Carlisle (or Settle) and follow the railway line as much as possible to Settle (Carlisle) passing every railway station on route. It does involve some serious climbing. If I remember rightly there was only one set of traffic lights on the whole route once out of Carlisle.
That sounds like an interesting route. The far northern area around Armathwaite is very picturesque. I'm guessing you'll climb the Coal Road to get from Garsdale to Dent Station then along Stone House to regain Newby Head & Ribblehead. Lots of top quality climbing.
Cracking ride, Gordon and as always a great video to boot! Mallerstang area looked amazing and that 3 peaks section is a joy to cycle through (dare I say it even with a headwind!). I was feeling those last few miles with you but sounds like the legs have held up to a high volume week really well.
@@onemorecyclist that's my first linear ride for nearly a year, when Avanti refused access at Preston & I rode home. Yesterday was TPE - no trouble at all with the reservation. Catching that sweet-spot where you can see all three peaks and the viaduct was worth the wind-pushing. Those moments stay with you.
@@clippingin1593 you can 'almost' count on TPE and Northern with bikes, which is great for this part of the world 🙂. Always good to have a smooth journey out as it sets up the day and the ride nicely. Definitely moments on the bike seem to be extra well baked into the memories.
Great ride and great vid. Like the new zoom in feature. Once again you hold our hands all the way, pointing out the landmarks and giving us our bearings. Marlestang...I imagine the name originates from when the Norse came over??
It's one of my favourite areas and in the 2000s I'd often ride between West Yorks and the North Lakes, exploring different variants each time. 'Mallerstang' is an interesting name and I think you're right about it having Norse origins although my dad, being a fan of Georgian architecture, wondered if there was a Scottish connection with 'Mellerstain House/Castle' near Kelso. Perhaps it's a fusion of Celtic/Norse/Norman? I remember fellwalking with my dad in the mid-80s and talking to an old dales farmer near the landslip - at best we were understanding two words in three - the oddest Yorkshire/Cumbrian hybrid I've ever heard. Quite unlike the limestone dales farmers just a few miles to the south.
Superb video Gordon, thanks. Everyday a school day, I wasn't aware of the Appersett Viaduct or the road to skip Hawes. I have been the victim of that wind of Widdale more than once, it seems like it's funnelled up the dale. Great content and presentation (as usual). I'm looking forward to the next one.
Cheers, Andrew. Yesterday I thought I'd filmed the viaduct climb but it looks as if I'd nudged the GoPro from 'video' to 'photo' mode because when I transferred the files there was only a single frame of that section. Definitely try it next time - it peaks around 18% but it's short and the road is very quiet so it's pressure free. I'm hoping to get another train-trip to Penrith before autumn sets in where I return via Shap, Tebay, Sedbergh, Dentdale, Newby Head.
@@andrewc948 That's a beautiful road. I've done that branch from Nateby then over Buttertubs to Hardraw but I wouldn't have fancied it in yesterday's winds. That was one of my mental detour routes if the Mallerstang landslip was impassable....thankfully it wasn't!
