- Now, I already knew I had a bit of a soft spot for the Yorkshire Dales but day 1 of the Dales Way has absolutely cemented this place in my heart! It was a weirdly tough day but there was beauty around every corner that kept me going. I really hope you enjoy this journey as much as I did and please keep an eye for the rest of this mini series!

I discovered walking, camping and map reading doing the Duke of Edinburgh scheme at school. I'm 64 and still backpacking. Currently doing the Coast to Coast.
After seeing your first Cumbria way video I decided to go and do it myself a week later. I think I might have to do the same with the Dales Way too!

Canadian Girl Guide / Ranger here. Big impact on my life. Camping and hiking, and selling… cookies! That was some years ago though, I have just turned 67. I do a lot of trail walking, I am a bit slow at it though because I have camera in hand and I don’t want to miss anything. Lol!

Thank you for a lovely set of Yorkshire videos. I live half an hours ride away from Bolton Abbey and spent many days by the river with my son enjoying the scenery, water and picnics. I know he will do the same with his children. We are very lucky to have the gorgeous dales on our doorstep. Makes me proud to be from such a beautiful county. Do come again and check out The Strid - it's something to behold!
It was great seeing this. I lived in Ilkley for 11 years - up until 2023. Then I moved to Northumberland for ten months. Now I'm in Arnside, across the river from Black Crag. The Dales Way is excellent. It follows the River Wharfe for most of the way. There is a Dales High Way, which is more of a challenge - it traverses the hills, rather than the valleys and river.
What has amazed me most, other than the scenery, your waffle and genuine excitement, is the fact that you managed to find a northern train actually running out of the furness peninsular. I'm looking forward to part 2 .😊

I'm surprised tha dint get a sudden urge to wear a flat cap and start saying "hey up". Warmed my heart when it started and the first thing you mention is needing a brew 😂 you'll pass for a local with words like that. Yorkshire dales is a special place. Some of our rarest wildlife resides in the Dales as well as the north Yorkshire moors. Both have a very different feel to them. You should 100% check our the moors. Miles and miles of moorland,.especially in August when the Heather is out and it's just a sea of pink for miles.

Love the Dales Way, I am a Yorkshire Lass and I adore some of the places. Burnsall, Grassington are gorgeous. Buckden is lovely too, hiked up Buckden Pike for some fab views along the valley. Sedberg has of course the Howgills which are amazing. Bolton Abbey also has the Valley of Desolation up to Simons Seat that is gorgeous! Grassington is where they film All Creatures Great and Small, great walks round there too, Barden Moor, Linton Falls, Conistone Dib and Kilnsey Crag, Mossdale Scar

I just hope that being pitched next to me didn't put you off doing another long walk: maybe High Way next time?

The Strid is THE most dangerous stretches of water in the world, bar none. Fall in there and there’s basically no chance of you getting out alive.
Yes. The river turns 90 degrees. The width becomes the depth. Don't jump it!
@@avpmobi No don’t. The current at the surface looks relatively mild, and it is, but the main current is channelled and funnelled underneath the surface and is absolutely lethal. Somebody measured the pull of the undercurrent once and nobody has or would have the physical strength to overcome it, especially so if you get pulled down into one of the crevices.

Beautiful walk! (Hello to Andy! Lovely to meet you! ) What a nice surprise to see we are going on a walk about! And a new adventure to see things even you have not seen. You did encounter ALOT of people but this walk goes through more villages. We are looking forward to part two. AND we are looking forward to van trips as well…maybe with Finn!

A fantastic route and another superb film. I did it with my older brother around 2004ish over 5 days camping. Move on 20 years and, at the end of September, I’m running the Dales Way in the reverse direction to you for the MNDA, adding an extra 22 miles at the end to take me back to Wibsey, Bradford. I’m hoping to complete in around 28 hours. Looking forward to the rest of your film. 🤙🏼

Hi Glenn, 26 mins in and enjoying this route already. You mention walks overseas, France in particular. Again I can totally recommend the Tour Du Mont Blanc. I’d even happily tag along with you in the background. It’s stunning out there 👍🏼⛰️🏔️🏔️
That bridge (43 minutes) is the Nidd Aqueduct, built in 1899. So no knights. Or maybe just knights who say 'Nidd', instead of 'Ni!'.
Loving the walk on the Dales way, it's good to see it again. Appletreewick is called App'trick by the locals. The swing bridge is a bit wobbly but the walk along the river is ace. My late hubby's local was the Devonshire in Grassington. It had the same affect on him too. Lol. Thanks Glenn. 🤣

Your video brought back great memories of my husband & I doing this walk back in April. The river was a lot higher then.
You film so much of the route and I appreciate how much work goes into doing this. Keep doing what you do, in my opinion the best UA-camr out there!

Really enjoyed this Glenn, although I’m having fomo right now after reading all the comments about the Strid 😂 It is such beautiful, gentle countryside, so different from the harsh Aussie bush! I was a Brownie and a Guide and it had a huge impact on my life. I’m still out in the bush every chance I get. Thank you for sharing your adventures 💜

France! The Chemin du St Jacque! If not the whole way, start in Le Puy en Velay and head south through Conque (don’t miss that!!!) go for as long as you care…journey of a lifetime!!!
I walked the Dales Way last summer and loved it. Similar to your first day I enjoyed 6 days of sunshine. It’s a fantastic part of the world and I’m pleased you’re showcasing its beauty for everyone to see. Looking forward to episode 2.

Yes I’ve slept in (actually owned) a two-pole canvas tent with no fly and no groundsheet, back in the early 80’s.
… As part of these “ways” walks, have you considered Joss Naylors “Lake, Meres and Waters”?
He did it in 19 hours (105 miles!!!), but for mere mortals, it breaks down into 8-10 sections.

Did the Dales High Way in July 21 and what a fabulous place Yorkshire is, this vid brought back so many wonderful memories - Glen I think you have to the best job in the world, and here's hoping you get to 100k subscribers real soon, you absolutely deserve it !!

Been looking forward to this, watching you walk our regular routes.. Been up in Swaledale today, watched you in wharfedale and now watching borrowdale on countryfile, which is where we were last week.
If you're interested in a "way" around Swaledale/Wensleydale have a look at the Herriot Way. There's also the Inn Way series which might appeal 🍻 can't wait for the rest.. Think it should take us up nicely to our short break we have booked in Sedberg 💚
I can vouch for the Herriot Way. I walked it a couple of months ago and loved it. It’s got a bit of everything and logistically it works very easily as it’s a circular walk.
Another great area and walk ,beautiful scenery. A place you could check out which my brother camped and walked a month or so back which seemed mountainous and beautiful is the Vosges its in France on the border of Germany, he saw Chamois a type of mountain goat
Ha - I did the first 15 miles of this out to Burnsall today (then got the bus back, cos I've got work in the morning). If you get back to Ilkley consider climbing Beamsley Beacon - totally worth it for the view!

I was a scout then became scout leader then onto being a venture scout. I live in Norfolk and the later introduced me to the hills , then I started climbing which let to exploring the Alps and long distance walking . I’m
70 now but still do walking !. Scouts started this for me !.

Was a Guide and then a Ranger and brilliant memories of those big green tents… Two Raven weekends where we nearly froze to death in the snow and then had to rescue belongings in the next as the campsite flooded 😂. I even won a place to go to an international camp in Sweden - wonderful and a whole different scale with totem poles and tables and benches made from whole trees…… Those ghost stories and sing songs round the campfire with spam fritters and hikes into the countryside definitely instilled the love of the outdoors and got us through the awful 1970’s and 80’s in Northern Ireland.
Thanks so much for your videos and they have inspired me to go camping and trekking again and so far I have completed St Cuthberts Way and the Arran Way this year and after watching this I think the Dales Way or the Cumbria Way might have to be next😂😂😂
How about doing the Tour du Monte Blanc? You'll like that one a lot.

First time I did that walk September 1980 , it rained non stop till I got to Grassington. Many years later I did some of the Cumbrian way, again 6 hours of rain till I got to Conistone. ☔
I'm very eager to find out how the shoes are. I've been looking at them for ages. Also, we need to give you some lessons in assertiveness( livestock).😊
Yes I was in the cubs then the Scouts and then the services and it definitely seeded my love for the outdoors. But also as a very young lad I had to wear callipers as my legs weren't very straight. So my Nanner use to take me and my sister tramping all over the N York moors to strengthen my legs witch worked a treat. This also had a big impact on my love of the outdoors.
Another great video , I thought you must be doing the Dales Way when I saw you in Grassington outside the pub , it was your voice I first recognised. It’s a walk I’ve done twice, it’s lovely.
I watch all your walks always brilliant Glenn. Sadly don't comment (sorry I'm more unsociable than you lol) However I must say you have missed out on one of Britains unique places by not going down to the Strid!!!! Its amazing...65 METRES deep in some places down there..YES!! Crazy I know. 100% proof been posted even on here on YT with underwater cameras going down to the bottom..it's truly a magical place to photograph in Autumn too. You really MUST go back even for the day in Autumn to photograph around there! Right onto the rest of your walk..only half way through too haha
So glad to see you covering the dales way. I did this in April and loved it then in may I did the Cumbria Way and in July the Cleveland Way which was my favourite.

The Scouts, Guides etc are a fantastic way to introduce kids to the joys of outdoors. My daughter loved it and has continued to love walking, canoeing etc and her kids the same. Sadly there are waiting lists for packs as there aren’t enough adults to run them

Never knew there was a dales way, looks cracking. Pyrenees would be amazing, not been there but it's on my list of places to walk.

Yeah did this last year, its a great walk. I never really got river walks, until I did this as your walking alongside rivers so much on it. 1st night I wild camped in a bivvy in Grassendale down by the bridge...there was thunder and lightning through the night but no rain. The ducks where not happy as I think I was bivvying in their sleeping place !
Dont forget to sit on the Dalesway Seat right at the end mate.

I think you'll find the Dales High Way much more interesting.... Saltaire to Appleby... Over Ingleborough etc.... that should be your next trip 👍👍

@@jonm4989you will, it's great. I dunno if "more" interesting is summat I'd say, they're both interesting in their own ways (although I haven't done all the Dales way, just bits: I was meant to do 2 days on Lady Anne's way here, but it was too warm for that for me!)
High Way definitely has longer stretches that are less populated, but you still pop into bits that have populations (Skipton, Settle, Sedbergh).
We're doing the Herriot this September, how did you find it? Did you camp, or did you pub it? Bit of both?
