Thanks for watching! Check out my FREE TRAINING (hosted by Kaitlyn Davidson) - HOW TO GO FROM STRUGGLING TO LEARN PIANO TO PLAYING YOUR FAVORITE SONGS (IN AS LITTLE AS A FEW MONTHS) WITHOUT OVERWHELM, CHILDREN'S MUSIC, AND UNNECESSARY MUSIC THEORY www.try.piano.ly/free-training
I started lessons over 50 yrs ago with a classical instructor. I lasted one year. The next year I started with a local sax player who also taught "popular" piano. He started me straight away with a 1-5-8-5 arpeg left hand with right hand melody off of lead sheets (which he wrote out by hand). It was absolutely mind blowing to me that I could'seemingly overnite, play a huge popular repertoire. I still use this as my go to approach for a quick start with any lead sheet. With lots of practice/experience you can grow into more sophisticated techniques but this specific technique is the only one that will give a good / acceptable result just about every time. It even works pretty well with jazz if you use your right hand effectively and definitely works well with simple arrangements of classical.
Can you imagine if they took this approach at schools! I spent 4 years at secondary modern here in the UK, we supposedly had music lessons 3 times a week..and in the whole of that 4 years I struck the triangle about 6 times.. that was it. No one was allowed near the piano! I’m now 64 and learning the piano and with your help I’m loving every minute. Thank you for your generosity and utterly wonderful teaching approach.
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful ! what a wonderful teacher you are, I'm learning so so much with you and really can't thank you enough. Much peace and love Gary x
This is a subtle, effective technique to make a song have more movement and sound more full. But that rhythmic coordination! I’m going to try to learn this exact part of this song from the video so that I can watch your hands!
This song is a great motivator. I can sound really good quickly and then go off and learn more difficult pieces. Would love to see you break down some more songs in this way. Thank you!
Thank you very much for your classes. You make easy to understand for someone like me, who is trying all sorts of methods to grasp the secret of playing piano and , till now ,I felt a bit lost.❤. And, by the way, I wish you a MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY 2024.
For those of you who are just starting out playing the piano like I am, and are old enough to remember a Joni Mitchell song called “River,” the 15851 arpeggio is used throughout the song in the left hand, while the right hand plays just a pair of notes, one and six, of the various chords which would normally be played in the right hand. I recommend you search out River and download the transcription, so that you can see how well this pattern works.
Hi Kaitlyn. Been sort of "stuck" past several moths due to life events and wanted to try again to learn piano. I am late 60's retired so learning without formal lessons makes it harder. I was learning scales some chord progressions while learn to play my fav songs but never got very far. Then saw your recent video while playing my all time fav "What a Wonderful World". Always liked your teaching style, encouragement and humor. If I could just maybe, learn to play this one song, then maybe will give me the encouragement to continue. Question, where do I find the lead sheet for this song as in your video? Thanks for taking the time. Bruce
That was an awesome tutorial on how to enhance a song with a simple left hand pattern. Since you asked for suggestions on other songs, my pick would be the beautiful jazz standard Nearness of You
i thought i finally got over with this song post strumming over my guitar and humming and creating a live recording cover, but no not yet, can't have enough of this song. I like the left hand pattern you showed. thanks.🤗🌝🌈❤
Thank you very much Kaitlyn. This is a nice way of teaching. So awesome. I would like to request the song "Imagine" by John Lennon. Could you please show how to play it and jazz it up? I would like to follow how you play it. Thank you.
Ohhhhhh Voooooowww !! Soooooo lovely !! Today night I shall try 🙏 this Pattern. Thank you soooooo much. God bless you and your family and your team so much. Can you suggest me this or other pattern for the song " Amazing Grace ", please ?!!
I was trying this using arpeggioed triads in the left hand but it didn't sound that good. I like the root, 5th, and octave pattern you demonstrate, and now all I have to do is coordinate my hands.... I will practice this until I get it, thanks!
Thank you, Kaitlyn. Again and as usual good advice and nice recommendations! Looking forward to watching your next video. A song for "Jazzing it up" could be "Eyes without a face" by "Billy Idol".
Another great video Kaitlyn. It seems like a lot of times just a simple addition to the left hand takes the song to another level. Where do you think is the best resource to get lead sheets that aren’t overly complicated, but will still sound good? Thanks
I love that little trick of adding the fifth and using the leadsheet is a great idea (I saw another video where a pianist does the same). How about doing "The Look Of Love" and "Autumn Leaves." Thanks.
I would love to play with melody Amazing Grace or I Can Only Imagine Currently learning classical style and it’s painfully long !! Playing with chords only is not what I think I want either because I can’t sing and want to have the song decipherable. What a beautiful song ! Thank you
Morning beautiful lady, I can't wait until I come back from the dentist, but I can just say I adore lead sheets because they're easy and allows one's creativity express through music. I am a beginer self taught ear player I don't read notes juuust a little, I can't play fast... don't like it to be honest and counting to me means nothing... is inside me... The couning intimidates me catastrofically, again to be honest, so I let the holy spirit take care of that. Is very interesting that you kindly explain what the left hand does in relation to the melody, how and when, what goes with what and when... this type of thing, that's what I was wondering for a long time, just curious I suppose. So there I am anything to inspire me and give me confidence because I always think that I am wrong. My moto is if it souns nice I am ok no need to worry, so I rely on my instinct and my good ears, bless them☺. Thank you👍.
Hope you can help with this one, as I have searched extensively . From album (When I Fall In Love) Chris Botti with Paula Cole ... 'How Love Should Be'. Written by Jeremy Michasel Lubbock - UK. Amazing melody and lyrics. Want to play it sooo badly !! Plz teach chords and magical improv ! 🙏🏻

It confused me as a beginner when piano teachers would say that a fifth was five white keys away from the root. But that's not true since it only works that way for C major

At first you played chords with your right hand then you didn't play them when you played the melody. Why don't you play the chords with your left hand and the melody with your right hand.
I would watch my free training to help. There are 2 ways to play piano- as an accompanist or as someone who plays the accompaniment and also the melody. I showed both ways in this video.
@pianoly thanks for the reply. I should study more before I comment. I cant help myself. When you play the melody with the right hand, do you have the option to play the whole chord or the octave and fifth with the left hand?

As long as you can show up for 10-30 minutes most days of the week, you can learn piano!
Being Christmas time, how about Silentg Night. 💗
Waaaaaaw!
If only you would give the sheet music then I could practice this!!!!
I am looking to play Last Date by Floyd Cramer could you do a you tube on how to play it. Thank you
mam i see your all video how can i contrac with u. plz mam respond
Thanks for the video. So you're arpeggiating root, fifth, root in the left had. That's 3 notes in 4/4 time. How does that work?
Quarter note, quarter note, half note. Make sense?
@@pianoly Awesome, thank you!
I've always assumed that the left hand had to fully define the chord. But I guess that's not true then. That opens a lot of possibilities.
@@159awi Correct, it does not depend on the left hand. :)
Thank you for the question and answer !! 😊

Dearest Kaitlyn , how old are you ?
Chords are not 1 3 5. Its 3 halfsteps between the first and second note you play and 2 halfsteps between the second and third note you play
It is 1 3 5 in that specific scale
It is 1 3 5 in the scale of the key
Totally confusing. The octave is not a chord.
An Octave is a 2 note chord. Also called a dyad. Hope this brings some clarity 🙏🏽
You're right - an octave is not a chord. We played notes in both hands, therefore including all parts of the chord.
@pianoly thanks for the reply. I should study more before I comment. I cant help myself. When you play the melody with the right hand, do you have the option to play the whole chord or the octave and fifth with the left hand?
