I have played keyboards in bands since 1983 and still do. I still do not (bother to) read music. I did have a teacher in the early years who taught me the importance of knowing chords and how they are constructed. A very old book - "Chord Construction Magic" by Bill Irwin - actually written for organists but still applies, had been my bible for years until I just know naturally about the sound I want, the direction I want the music to have (direction also means emotion to me). Players - please learn those chords. Feel the emotion from your music. Kaitlyn's video is a great place to start.
I’m the type of person who is not easily impressed, but have have to say Kaitlyn, your teaching methods are outstanding the best there is, and Trust me I’ve watched a lot. You make everything easy to understand and delivered in a pace that’s easily followed. Incredible !!!!!!!! Ray from the UK.
Wooow Wooow after a year watching piano teachers players you are the one finally I understand and the concept of music notes… Thanks a lot … from now and on I will following you.. Teacher..
After struggling to perceive the intended meanings of chords and their structure, your description of chords was so clear and concise. I now understand them. Thankyou Kaitlyn.
All the Things You Are, Misty, and Moonlight In Vermont. I am a classically trained piano teacher and always want my students to learn several different ways of shaping music so they can play their favorites in addition to Bach, Mozart, and Chopin. So, though I teach, I am the student in your lessons. And though I have played piano for 68 years, I will pretend to be a novice to learn what you have to offer. Thank you.
I can't believe it. My mother gave me one piano lesson when I was maybe 5 years old. It stuck with me my whole life. It was the 4-3 pattern. I started teaching myself piano years ago to fill in at church when we lost the keyboard player and I used that method to find the chords. Someone else stepped up to play piano that was experienced and I stopped practicing and just went back to guitar. I never had the chance to play on Sunday. Its been 60 years and this is the 2nd time in my life I heard someone explain it.
I'm about a year in, self-taught adult. (Lol), but this video, using math, was excellent. I've been driving myself crazy trying to understand the "mathematical logic"... I'm a retired math teacher, this video helped tremendously! Holy crap, you covered just about every way to make chords in ONE VIDEO. I wish I'd seen this about a year ago when I started playing. I even saved the video. Looking forward to more of your content! Great job! ❤😊😊
I am a guitar player. I am really enjoying your videos, especially this one (Learn *EVERY* Piano Chord). Some of the things I was a bit fuzzy on with guitar, like diminished chords, are more clear after seeing you teach them on the piano.
A chord is multiple notes being played at a time Major: 4+3 half steps Minor: 3+4 half steps Diminished: 3+3 half steps Suspended 2: 2+5 half steps Suspended 4: 5+2 half steps Dominant Seventh Chord: 4+3+3 half steps Major Seventh Chord: 4+3+4 Minor Seventh Chord: 3+4+3 C Major: C, C Minor: Cm Dominant Seventh: C7 Major Seventh: Cmaj7 Minor Seventh:Cm7
the first song I would like to play is "seasons in the sun" when I can for the first time in all the years of trying I am excited about doing my piano lessons, I feel that as I learn with you I may be able to, as you say, play a real song, not just " mary had a little lamb" after ages of practice but my choice of song as we go along, Thank you
Wow, thank you for this lesson. I’ve never seen Major & Minor chords explained this way (4 + 3 & 3 + 4). I think it will be very helpful for me, I usually play by ear until I feel the sound is right for what I want to record. I’ll get back to the lesson now, just wanted to write that down before I forget what I wanted to say. Thanks agin.. 👍
Wow, you made it so simple. I learned how to build major and minor chords from a keyboard player in a band when I was 16 but never knew how to build beyond that. (I'm a guitar player.) I'm 68 and finally found a great way on how to build chords that went beyond what I knew. Thank you for the lesson!
Playing basic guitar and singing forever, never being a true musician and always wanting to learn (basic) piano, I believe YOU ARE FANTASTIC at teaching the stubborn / lazy learner. I have never seen instruction laid out so plain and simple. You've managed to cut out all excess and serve just the main course. THANK YOU!!! Forever greatful. WOW!
Awesome instruction Kaitlyn! You make it not only fun to learn but explain why it's so important and you relate it to modern day music that everyone is familiar with. Your vids are great and appreciated a lot! Peace out girl!
As a beginner, I've struggled with the concept of types of chords. But this made sense! Linking the moods they evoke and the simplicity of numbering. Thanks very much!
❤ Love your lessons Kaitlyn and as guitar player and home recording enthusiast I have recently bought a midi keyboard to go with my DAW. Using piano chords gives you a nice basis to build an instrumental song by adding layers of guitars, bass and drums. I’m really excited to particularly learn the majors, minors, 7ths and sus chords which cover most of what’s needed for a good rock, pop instrumental. The thing I love about midi is you can play the chords at a manageable BPM then speed them up to whatever sounds good without any change in pitch.
Thanks for that. All my life and no one has explained the structure of different chords to me like that. It seems such a basic thing to explain, regardless whether it helps with playing existing sheet music or not. (Now I just have to make the opportunity to take up learning to play again. That bit ain't going too well.)
I have seen Maj 7 chords written as CM7 with a cap M. Not too often though. Major 7 chords are not used as often as Minor 7 chords in Christian music. I many times use Minor and Minor 7 interchangeably.
Thank you thank you thank you .... I play guitar bass and learning piano/keyboards all by ear. I have learned major minor diminished and 7ths the hard way but still struggled to find them in the 7 Major notes if asked😎🤧 I can see that by this formula I can find all the chords with ease thanks to you. Of course I will make it my mission to learn this formula. I would be a well accomplished musician had I come across this some 50 plus years ago😂🤣that's 50 + 10 + 7 ( my age 😂🤣) Thanks again very much appreciated xx❤
Wow..wow..wow... Amazing explain... I m playing piano in church from last so many years and some chords I can't found but your numbers tricks it was amazing... Love this... Thank you so much...
Thank you so much for this beautiful piece of piano class. How sincerely have you enlightened details for beginners to learn fast, safe and sound and perfect - that I haven't seen all my life. Thank you once again.

This stuff blows me away. Such complexity from 12 little notes. Thank you for this video, I’ve never had anyone explain these mysterious chords in terms of their formulas. You rock!
I am learning Music Theory and I'm quite a beginner. My favourite song, once I can play would definitely be 'Moonlight Sonata'. It is absolutely my favourite song to date. Thank you.
48 years old and teaching myself how to play. This was soooo helpful! You have a new sub! Fantastic way to learn chords. Thank you so much. I have been learning how to play golden hour by JVKE. It captures my love for my hubby even tho he is talking about a girl.
Thank you Kaitlyn! EXCELLENT TUTORIAL!!!🎉🎉🎉. Learned ALOT! I loooooove those FORMULAS🥰. ✅Also Enjoyed Last Nite’s WEBINAR!!!! That was EXCELLENT too!!!!!🥰🥰🥰. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

Great video, very helpful. I have to say your appearance and set are super professional looking, but your editing brings in the humor. Really fun haha!

This video was terrific. Great way to lay out the various types of chords. I've been playing a while, but I got away from music theory and composition.
You are the best, with an incredible talent for teaching. I have to be your oldest online student at 76. I have played a little, about all my life by ear but with your talent to teach, I will be able to expand my ability to entertain myself, in my enjoyment and love for piano music.
Good video young lady. Great info and formulas. I saved this to watch later im a guitar guy but piano can help learn to play music. Thank you God bless ❤️🙏💯👍👌
Thank you so much for this very helpful video❤ I am a student, so i don't have much time to learn piano consistently. But i play it when i get time and your videos helps me a lot. Thank you very much 🙂
I want to play big band/old New Orleans style Jazz. I love listening to Count Basie. I've had my keyboard for almost a week and that seems like a long way off. Another song is Up The Lazy River by the Mills Brothers. I downloaded the chords from Ultimate Guitar, but I'm not sure how to go about playing it with the chords (All at once or one key at a time). I've been using your practice vids and I'm shocked at how much I've picked up in less than a week. Thank you for the content.
Great Video!
