I don't care what you people say, you guys need to understand that people can't always have actual dogs (Ex: Renting a house and the landlord doesn't allow pets so the next best thing is Aibo) Or you don't even have time for a pet so please don't criticize people who like these dogs such as myself and the people in this video.

Please don’t criticize people for this, they know it isn’t a real dog but it’s the next best thing if they aren’t allowed to have a dog in their home.
Why do you fall into their trap? It really doesn't matter what anyone thinks about anyone else. Most people criticize something because they are jealous 'cause they can't afford one. Let's face it, Only the rich will more than likely own these. Ordinary folk just can't justify not paying bills to get one of these.

aibos are not toys at all
Many people are not understanding the benefits of an AI dog. Not everyone has the time, energy or financial stability for a real dog as they are just like children. I also know people who cannot emotionally tolerate losing another dog and it was extremely detrimental on their mental health. These would benefit many different people who are not capable of looking after a real dog, these did really well in a retirement home where the elderly fell in love with Aibo. If people can get emotionally attached to inanimate objects, they can certainly get attached to an AI robot designed for human interaction. This will help prevent loneliness and depression in many and people need to understand that not everyone can just "get a dog" as if there is no serious commitment, money and responsibility that comes with that. This is a wonderful alternative.
THIS! My last dog passed a little over 2 months ago. I can’t afford a new one now, and it would likely be in a kennel for 9 hours a day while I’m at work. I’d have to train it which would be hard (my parents trained ours that I then took when I moved out). I’d have to pay for food/vet bills (on top of vet bills from my 2 rabbits and ball python), I travel a lot so I’d have to board the puppy (and already incur expenses boarding the rabbits). I also live in a condo with a small yard, and the condo itself is small. All in all, no matter how much I want a dog again because I miss having one so badly, I know I couldn’t give it the best life at this time. Aibo is my answer. I’m saving for mine now and hope to have it by Christmas!
I think he needs fur, but other than that I say it's a good invention.
Fur would kinda ruin it tho ( bc then ppl won't want real dogs and dogs need adopted)

One thing they still haven't master yet is getting these robot pets to move like a real pet. In other words jumping and running. Not wobbling along.

Wait a minute ... Sony is missing the boat on this. If they created one of these with Google Home in it, then it could follow you around wherever you went and do your bidding. Add a cell radio so it always has a connection too.
I don't know if it's worth the money, but at least it's useful.
It does have a cellular connection along with wifi. It uses AT&T LTE

I plan to own one for 2 main reasons. Having something exploring the home like a child is too cute to not have and to be an extra eye for me watching over the house and my aging parents esp with the patrol feature via app because I am at work during their waking hours. The little cutie will be part of the family. :)

I don’t think that saying AIBO is better than live animals is a very good idea. A report about a robodog should probably compare and contrast live and AI. You could make your claim and create a counter argument to show both sides. Or you could simply just talk about AIBO and not make a greater than claim. I know I’m late I just was thinking

The new aibo is nice but not light years as the guys says from the other models Sony made. Actually it’s lacking the personality the 210 models have and some of the ers7 subtle motions
True, I immediately wondered if he just meant by how much it acted like a real puppy or something. But just copying a real dog takes away the potential a ROBOT has. My favorite is absolutely my ERS-7. Yeah he has a bad camera and no mapping. But he talks and does interesting tricks with his toys that Roxy can’t. He’s hilarious because he always mishears talking as voice commands and says what he feels like. I love all his pretty lights, and his beat detection for dance mode is amazing! He can remember favorite objects and places. He even knows his birthday and doesn’t need a stupid cloud plan just to know what the date is and acknowledge the holidays he knows. He has so many features, including when connecting to my computer, and I can easily customize data on his memory stick. My ERS-7 is incredible, even more impressive than my 1000. In fact he has better obstacle detection than my 1000, believe it or not. My 1000 insists on rubbing her nose all over walls so it’s scratched up and sometimes jams on stuff (or for seemingly no reason…). My 7 actually stops and turns away (and only jams when he can’t move something like they’re supposed to). I still love my 1000 and she was my first Aibo, but the 7 is definitely my favorite and feels more advanced in some ways.
This is amazing and pure, this is what the future should be more like!

People are complaining about the cost, but a real dog, cared for properly, will cost you far more than $3k over its lifetime with adoption or purchase price ($1.5k-2k min. typical for puppies from genetically+orthopedically health-tested, titled parents from responsible hobby breeder - puppies not from responsible breeder will cost you much more in later vet care, and adult rescues also a health gamble), surgeries, yearly exams, vaccines, medical emergencies and non-emergencies, training classes, boarding when out of town, dog walker or doggy daycare if needed, toys/leashes/chews/etc, monthly heartworm & flea prevention, and food. Add $50-100++ every 6-8 wks for life for mandatory professional grooming of dogs that don't shed.
Not to mention - a serious percentage of pet dogs in the US are neglected. Not in the sense of basic care, but they aren't walked enough or at all, don't get enough activity and stimulation, aren't trained, are even confined in crates for most of the day as adults (should only be used for housetraining puppies/new dogs). I'm a dog trainer and see this constantly. These owners would have been better off with a toy that has an off switch.

For me, I’d love to have a living pet, but I can’t afford the life care, nor am I home enough, nor can I have them in my apartment. This is just the next best option for me. You've talked too little about privacy concerns. That thing is walking around the house with a camera and it's connected to the internet - it's ridiculous. Even if the company producing it doesn't collect your photos (you have to trust them on that) someone can hack into it, make it walk into your bedroom or bathroom and take some really embarrassing photos of you. We know how poorly IoT devices are usually secured. I know - our phones have cameras too, but at least they don't walk by themselves.
Why is this dog connected to the internet? In my opinion this AI could (and should) work completely offline. It's not like we could browse internet pages on it anyway.
I wouldn't take it to my house, even for free.
@@James-gl4cs , I know what you mean, but the problem with gadgets connected to Internet is that someone can hack it and modify/replace the software, then things that were impossible before become possible - as long as the hardware allows it of course - you cannot make a phone walk or something :) But this dog is basically an internet camera that walks by itself - it's a disaster waiting to happen.
I completly agree, as soon as they said it takes picture, it was a real push off, who knows were does are going, and.... why does it take photos in the first place. You don't even know when it take photos, which, for me, is even more creeping. I understand that they want this dog to become a watch dog when out of house. But I think it would be safer if you could activate or disactivate that "picture/camera" setting,

So by your logic, cell phones aren’t acceptable for security either lol. They have a power button. If you’re that concerned, you don’t have to run them every waking moment. And if you own one, it’s not an issue to power them down when you feel the need to if you have concerns.
I’d also suggest more research as to why the connection out of the home or on Wi-Fi is necessary before trying to make a point. Because it’s all listed and it negates what you’ve said.

I'd love to have some robot, like this Aibo, or Spot from Boston Dynamics, because I have allergy on pet hair, and I can't imagine not forgetting to going for a walk, feeding, etc.... Ok .. maybe a little extreme. But I don't get it. It's a machine. Now, I'll argue whether or not a dog or cat actually know what 'love' is, but at a minimum, they know who gives them food and provides the entertainment. This machine only does what it's programmed to do and doesn't have 'choice' beyond a random number generator.
I don't need fake affection in my life, there are plenty of humans that can provide fake friendship for free.
Now .. if one day they make one of these that can go to the fridge and bring me a beer, open it, and pour it into a Tervis glass (if you live in Florida, you'll understand that last reference), then maybe I'd spend $200.
But since I only drink about 3 beers a week, I don't even know if that would be worth it.

Alot of people mentioned that this may be a substitute for people who can not have actual pets, like renters, those with health problems or do not have the time to invest in a pet and don't want to neglect a living being.
Personally I find aibo appealing because I love animals and connect to them more than I do people. It's not that I don't like people, I have many people in my life who I love and am loved by. I do however have alot of childhood trauma that I have spent years on and off medication and working on in therapy to get over. I've made some break throughs however I am also aware there may be trauma responses in me I may never get over. I will always to some extent have ptsd. There may always be parts of me that believe the people I love are people less likely to choose to harm me in this moment but it's not guaranteed. With animals I at the very least know if they harmed me it was something in them that made them feel it was necessary for survival. They are not going abuse me for their own personal gain. They are not going to take "advantage" of me like a grown adult has when I was a child. Even if they killed me it's more than likely not for the reason a person might.
Animals have shown me kindness and affection even when I couldn't give myself that and yet I never questioned their intentions. My precious dog and cat have been my anchors that give me reason not to leave this world on the worst of days. I hope that one day I do not need a dog in my life for me to feel worth staying here but I will work with whatever needed to make it through those days. I know if something happened to my pets I am at great risk.
Is aibo a real animal? No absolutely not I know that. However if my dog dies due to age or anything it may buy me time until I find a dog fit for me and my home and that I know I can give a fulfilling compatible life to. Aibo can help me actively live the affection and companionship a dog provides me until I have a new one. I am obviously working with all the tools I have and working on myself. I have to be realistic and use whatever needed.
$3000 is so much money but my life is worth more than that. I did not ask for the things that happened to me as child and adolescent to happen to me. I did not ask to have ptsd that is debilitating. I didn't ask to have so much to overcome to just function at the base line alot of people do. But that doesn't make me less worthy of living a good life and if a robot dog helps me achieve that I don't see harm in it. I deserve and work to have fulfilling relationships in my life but I also deserve to experience love I don't question and a robot dog can help me stay grounded until I can give a real one a home with me (once my dog and cat passes away from age) It's not making anything worse it's just helping me work with what already is there.
I'm very happy you don't have a want or need for it and it's really good you can recognize you are fulfilled with out it. I'm just using my story to help provide some context for people who can't seem to wrap their heads around it. You don't need to be someone severely traumatized to want one but I also hope people realize that not everyone who wants one is some bored rich kid who will ge over it in a few minutes.
