What Does the Bible Say About Hell? (Part 1 of 2)

  • Do people really burn in hell? Part one of this two-part teaching reminds the listener that God is love and explains the choices of life or death. The Hebrew word gehenna is erroneously translated as “hell” in Scripture. The teaching dispels the theology that sinners burn forever in hell.
    Verses: Josh.15:8; Ps. 37:10; Jer. 7:20; Mal. 4:1; Matt. 5:29; 10:28; John 3:16; Rom. 6:23; Rev. 20:14
    Teacher: John Schoenheit

    There was a Pastor here locally who also figured this out, he studied the original languages and was an amazing teacher- however when he talked about there not being a Hell, he quickly lost his congregation. The church was called "Beersheba" and within a few months of his updated teachings he no longer had enough parishioners to stay open. I had in my mind questioned the existence of Hell since, but recently I prayed and asked the Lord to reveal to me the truth- and now here I am watching this video. I've never even seen any of your videos before, and this one came up in my "suggested videos" on the youtube homepage. Could be a coincidence as I do look up a lot of bible related videos, but I feel that I was lead here for a reason.

    The eternal torment thing is hard to push out of your mind once it's been planted in your head, so unfortunately it still gets me all worried sometimes, but I keep praying to God asking him to show me the truth, that he IS love! And seeing videos like yours gives me hope. So thank you. I also am hoping to find a new church, because the one I'm at is obviously not right for me as it's taught those beliefs that torment me.

      Well, you want the truth? Here's what God's own word says, in Revelation 21:8.
      "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death."

      @@xbbt7770 Yes, it is the truth. But you probably don’t understand it, Do you know what “death” means in the Bible? It means you’re not immortal, and you will die permanently if you’re not found in Christ. “The soul who sins shall die” Ezekiel 18:20. It doesn’t say the soul that sins shall be eternally punished. Revelation 21:18 is talking about the future judgment, when the wicked are resurrected from the dead and punished temporarily. The lake of fire will have an “everlasting” effect in the sense that the wicked will never come back to life again and will cease to exist by that fire. That’s why it says second “death” because these people are going to literally DIE.
      In order to understand it better, there are two resurrections that’s going to take place. The first one when Christ returns is the resurrection of the righteous, who will live forever and reign with Christ. The second resurrection is when the wicked come back to life and are sent to the lake of fire to experience suffering. See revelation 20:6, Daniel 2:12. But their final destiny is eternal death.

    Very clear concise teaching! I’ve believed this for 40 years of bible study; starting early in my christian walk, finding the teaching of eternal torment repulsive and totally unlike the nature of God, especially in Christ. So doing a serious thorough study of scripture on these words I came to the same conclusion. I have listened and read many other views, giving them the fair opportunity to prove it wrong, but they could never come close to disproving this. God deliver them from the traditional blinders they refuse to take off.

    Thank you for this video...I am a young Christian who has been tormented with the hell teaching for years. I've always thought, "How do the sins most people commit during their lifetime warrant an eternity of burning?" and "why would a loving God keep people immortal just so they can burn?" and "how could I be happy in heaven knowing that billions of other people, including some that I know and love, are suffering?" For years I couldn't fully enjoy life,

      This just goes to show you the importance of bible reading and studying. Don't believe anything that others teach you unless it lines up with God's word. I used to believe what I was taught about hell, that they LIVE there forever, then I READ THE BOOK. Let me tell you that Satan lied to Eve in the garden when he told her 'Thou shalt NOT surely die.' well meaning Christians still believe his lie till this day. This brings so much joy to me, finding this out has changed the way I view God now. I used to live in fear about Hell. And that is what happens with many people, they only accept Jesus because of the fear of Hell. How could that be? Then there is no true love. God is Love. So he can't force us to love him. But he allowed us to have free will, to make a choice.
    This should enlighten everyone, their love for God should not be forced no longer, but it can now be genuine.

      i explain you Brother: i am a German and i kno the original meaning of These Texts from the greek original Bible.... The word "Hell" Comes from the german word "Hölle", its a myth... originally the word for Hell must be "Gehenna"... Gehenna was the rubbish burning-place of the old Jerusalem City, they burned all the rubbish also dead bodies of criminals and other Things... sometimes These fires go out and the Things start to mold and then "Worms" come to eat all up until its compost.... the word in the old greek means not Worms but "maggots" and not "Worms dont die" but "maggots dont Metamorphose into fly", so Gehenna (the trash-place) has fires to burn and consume and if the fire goes out the maggots come to eat the Rests.... but if the maggots turn into fly they wont eat anymore and it will alll stink and begin mold.... so the "day of Gehenna" uses this trash-place as a Symbol: it will have fire that wont go out and maggots that dont Metamorphose until everybody who is wicked will be totally consumed and just ashes.... this text should Show us that there will be no escape, everybody who doesnt deserve life will be consumed and cant flee of it

      The fire is not quenched does not mean the people will be burning forever. It simply means what it says. The fire is not quenched! The only record of burning forever in hell that I have found is for three categories of persons: satan, the beast, and the false prophet (Revelation 20:10). If u look at the verse before (v9), the ordinary sinners were DEVOURED by fire. If they were for eternal hell, then, why were they DEVOURED & satan, beast, false prophet given a different judgement?

      Eternal Torment in Hell = False Doctrine

      Malachi 4:1,3
      For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do [this], saith the LORD of hosts.

      jms what does it initially say about this story. It states it is a parable and an analogy to make a point to the religious leaders of that time. They had the riches or the truth but would not teach those spiritually hungry and spiritually dying. Also the word Hell is Hades in Greek meaning death and the grave.
      What Yeshua was saying was in death those spiritually religious leaders are dead and have died in ignorance by preaching law instead of love and forgiveness and in death those who know God go to Abraham’s bosom which in Hebrew was referred to peace and comfort in death. Even the religious leaders descendants through Israel will not have the answers of eternal life because they believe in traditions of law and not love and forgiveness. Remember this John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

    Thank you for this, I started to question hell teaching some years ago, I found that ministers don’t like to talk about it and shut me down but I would go away feeling frustrated and eventually the burning questions would start up again. I’ve been threatened with hell by believers who have accused me of being a heretic. I am convinced that believers have their heads buried in the sand and can’t cope with the question, “ can a loving God do this to those He has created” its like a confusion tinted with rage rises up to the surface. Our God is a just God and vengeance is His and He will deal with the wicked one day and each one that will stand before Him and give an account and will have to face His wrath and their reward will be death, destruction, will be no more. Just a thought to add here, if each will be judged after the 2nd resurrection then why would the lord have people burning in fire now before being judged? That would make Him unjust wouldn’t it? Sorry it’s a long reply.

    Clear and simple teaching by John Schoenheit.
    I believed in the traditional hell doctrine for many years. Now and then I have had hard to accept it but I was convinced that the bible clearly support it. It was a great awakening when I understood what the bible really says in this matter. So many times I had read the bible verses who opposed hell doctrine in the belief they confirmed it!
    This because I interpreted the scripture through the theological eyeglasses I used. I realize that one main factor to that so many christians have been deceived is the use of the word "hell". Like John says in this video: the word "hell" should never have been in the bible at all!
    Hades, Sheol, Gehenna and Tartarus; all these words have in various bible translations been replaced with "hell". So confusing and misleading: all these are not the same thing!
    So important for us to know what the bible really says. There are so many books written, and testimonies at UA-cam, were people tell that they went to hell and saw demons torturing people down there. But we must not trust on peoples dreams or visions. If we know that the bible in a lot of verses describes death as an unconcious sleep we can reject stories that the soul continue to live under torment after death. There is nothing in the bible that supports the belief of a kind of hell in the inner of the earth. But we can find it in greek mythology, and the fairy tale Dante's inferno. The hell doctrine is a pagan myth and has nothing to do with the gospel!
    I am so exalted over the truth, what a relief: God shall destroy the sin and the sinners, not immortalise them!

    44Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
    45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
    46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

The church I've been going to didn't help either because they seem to support the eternal torment belief. But it's true, no loving God could really just let people suffer. And it's not just the people in hell, but people like me too who suffer because of such a belief. So lately I've been reading the bible a lot and doing research about this.

    Can I ask you a question? You said that the wicked will be thrown into the Lake of Fire. And, will be destroyed. You said that people won't burn forever. But, do you think they will burn (and feel the pain of fire) till they DIE in the flames (during the "second death")? Or, do you think that people will just be destroyed, but NOT feel the torment of the flames burning them up to the point where they destroyed (and no longer existing)? Just curious.

  • @esca8652

    Great video. The argument that many would bring up to counter what you said is that "well, they chose to go to hell." That is a reasonable defense. However, there is some sticky problems with that. We were born with free-will, what if we don't want to live for all eternity? We did not choose to be born. For people that don't want to live eternally they were placed on this earth with God knowing that they didn't want to live forever and knowing that they would deny Christ while still throwing them in hell. That sounds like the person was made just to be thrown in a prison cell. God is Life and He sets us free from darkness. This is an unfair scenario. A person with the ideals that I just expressed.
    There is another question that is important. "What if I don't/can't want to worship a God that would treat evildoers with such a heavy hand?" This was my case. I turned away from Christianity when I was 10 years old! It was for that reason alone. I refused to believe in Jesus Christ, it's not because my heart was hardened, I just didn't want to know or be involved with a God that is so unfair and wrong to treat the wicked in such a way. I actually wanted to know Jesus but the Scriptures turned me off. Deep down I knew that this wasn't the fate of the wicked.
    God has since made a powerful intervention on me and actually brought me to hell. He has shown me - and told me - very clearly that it is death. His word testifies such as well. I know this to be true as I know the voice of God and He ministers to me when I read His Word.

    I'm an atheist, but this is nice. People who preach God as "all loving" followed by "eternal agony and suffering" is absolutely ludicrous, beyond words. How so many people righteously defend eternal hell for, lets say children born into the wrong culture, is absurd beyond comprehension. People, sincerely, believe it is deserved justice, somehow. Sorry for the long rant... A belief in God is great, it's just unbelievable how so many people can mindlessly justify something unjustifiable...

We can have everlasting peace in the kingdom of heaven. Second death is hell. An everlasting hell. Hey David!
    Isaiah 45:7 is often quoted by some who try to prove that God is “in control” of everything that happens and that He is the cause of all good and evil. The problem with this line of thinking is that it produces many contradictions that cannot be explained.
    We do not believe this verse indicates that God is the cause of ALL prosperity or disaster. It merely says that there are times, such as when it fits with His plans and purposes, that he “brings prosperity and disaster.”

    Wellsaid brother. There are many passages wich teach that the wages of sin is death. Even in Job we find that the wicked will "be no more". Scripture teaches the wicked are consumed, perish (die), die, and will be no more. The teaching of eternal torment is one of the greates apostacies and it is put forth by those who reject scripture in lieu of their prideful preconception.

    Great presentation. Only, I would say the first death is the death of the body, and the second is the *annihilation (not to be confused with death) of the soul. No soul has been wiped off the face of existence, not until Death and Hades is cast into the Lake of Fire. But is it even a fire? Many times in the Bible "fire" is a synonym for trials.

      There is a book just for that. The title is " The Rich man and Lazurus" by E.W Bullinger. You can purchase it from Amazon.com. But just so you know, Jesus was telling a parable. It was not literal. If the meaning of a parable can be known literally without thinking about it, then the disciples would not be asking Him to explain the meaning.

    • @drupe737
      @drupe737 10 років тому

      Do you have biblical evidence to support your case that,it is not a parable?

    • @drupe737
      @drupe737 10 років тому

      What you are saying is just not good argument. Nothing in the story gives evidence that it is not a parable. But let's assume that I agree with your reasoning, then let me also ask you these few questions: How can a drop of water cool the tongue of someone who is being tortured for all eternity? And If the story is not a parable, don't you think Jesus is either lying or contracdicting himself when he said even if someone returned from the dead, people will not believe? Has God changed his mind then and sending dead people to tell us that there is hell?
      Dr. Ernest L Martin(1932-2002) gave a plausible interpretation of the parable. Lazarus is the Greek version of Abraham's servant Eliezer whom he sent to find a wife for his son Isaac if you remember the story in Genesis. The rich man is one of the sons of Jacob and his brothers. I can't explain the whole parable here but I hope you get the point.

    • @GamingandFrightened
      @GamingandFrightened 10 років тому

      ***** The rich man and Lazarus is indeed a parable. Let me quote a well known theologian (NT Wright) on this subject as he has a very convincing arguement on why it is a parable. "The story carries clear echoes of well-known folk tales, to which Jesus is giving a fresh and startling twist. The emphasis falls at the same point that was made twice - i.e., with great stress - in the prodigal son: 'resurrection', i.e. 'return from exile', is happening all around, and the Pharisees cannot see it.
      "The parable is not, as often supposed, a description of the afterlife, warning people to be sure of their ultimate destination. If that were its point, it would not be a parable: a story about someone getting lost in London would not be a parable if addressed to people attempting to find their way through that city without a map. We have perhaps been misled, not for the first time, by the too-ready assumption, in the teeth of the evidence, that Jesus 'must really' have been primarily concerned to teach people 'how to go to heaven after death'. The reality is uncomfortably different.
      "The welcome of Lazarus by Abraham evokes the welcome of the prodigal by the father, and with much the same point. The heavenly reality, in which the poor and outcast would be welcomed into Abraham's bosom (as everyone would know from the folk-tale), was coming true in flesh and blood as Jesus welcomed the outcasts, just as the father's welcome to the returning son was a story about what Jesus was actually doing then and there. The theme of 'rich and poor', not unimportant in Luke, is here thrown into stark prominence, as recent studies have stressed. But the point of this, when the story is seen as a traditional tale with a new ending, was not so much what would happen to both in the end, nor yet simply a statement on the abstract 'ethical' issue of wealth and poverty, but rather what was happening to both rich and poor in the present time. Jesus' welcome of the poor and outcast was a sign that the real return from exile, the new age, the 'resurrection', was coming into being; and if the new age was dawning, those who wanted to belong to it would (as in Deuteronomy and Jeremiah) have to repent. The story points up the true significance of what Jesus was doing, and the urgent need of those who were at present grumbling to recognize this significance. The five brothers at home correspond quite closely to the older brother in the prodigal son. 'Resurrection' is happening, but they cannot see it. The story takes for granted that the poor and outcast were rightly being welcomed into the kingdom, and it turns the spotlight on to the rich, the Pharisees, the grumblers: they, too, now needed to repent if they were to inherit the new day that would shortly dawn. They were refused the extra revelation of someone ongoing to them from the dead; the message of repentance was clear enough in Moses and the prophets.
      "The parable is therefore further strong evidence that 'repentance', in the senses already discussed, formed a central element in Jesus' proclamation. The basic story he was telling invited his hearers to see themselves as the true Israel, returning at last from exile, and turning back to their god as an essential part of the process."

      Faith is powerful including faith that is negative. In some African areas they can resurrect dead people through witchcraft and black magic. They have an empty shell of a human body that moves around but has no soul or personality.
      If a person is thought to believe there is a heaven or punishing hell and when they die if it is not their appointed time the last thing their unregenerated mind believes as truth is whatever’s they were taught or programmed to believe so they see angels or demons etc... their spirit returns to their body and then whatever their mind has perceived as truth becomes a big story that they saw angels or demons etc...

    I believe in Hell. I believe it is a real place. I initially got saved partly because I was afraid to go to Hell. Some years later as the Holy Spirit began to transform my heart and as I began to find out more and more about God and about Jesus and what all He sacrificed for me. My love for Him began to grow and still is growing stronger and stronger. I can honestly say that my greatest fear is not going to Hell for all eternity, but my greatest fear is being separated from God for all eternity. Yes. I believe in Hell. Yes. i beleive in Heaven. No. I dont beleive that the the Issue of Hell is what keeps a person from wanting to know God. He either calls us And opens our eyes to know the truth or He doesnt. We either answer or we dont. If we dont accept Jesus, regardless of what you believe will or will not happen, One thing is for sure. There will be consequences. Just obey God.
