Hi Sally, I'm Mimi. This is the 2nd video I've watched you work with cold wax. I've always been interested in cold wax. I've painted with oils before and recently completed my first portraiture in oils. I've also painted abstracts. Cold wax looks like so much fun to play around with. I love learning more. I'm curious to see how well your portrait image transfers on to your substrate with the sand mixed into your gesso(and the cokd wa, too). I can draw a little, but I believe in using reference materials. I'm looking forward to watching your videos of this full process of painting your portrait. I've got oils, scrapers, etc and will be ordering some cold wax tomorrow. I'm so excited to try this medium. Thank you for sharing your techniques and making these videos. So much appreciated.🌼
Thanks for the comment. Glad you find some value in my videos. You’ll love the freedom you get with cold wax and oils! They dry faster than straight oils too. You can incorporate pan pastels, oil sticks, neocolor crayons, collage, stencils, etc. So fun to play with! Keep watching Part 2 for the transfer and then the painting. It’s super easy to transfer…just make sure the surface is almost dry (slightly tacky works best.) Please come back and lmk how you like it, or if you have any questions. ❤️
Hi Sally, I'm happy I found your videos as I was given a wonderful set of oil paints a few years ago but have yet to use them. I painted in oils (a little) many years ago but they take so long to dry and take up a whole lot of room while they're doing it. I simply can't accommodate them anymore 😕. I'm hoping that you'll be showing me this process can be a good deal less drawn out. Guess I'll find out right?!
Hi and thanks for watching. Thin layers will dry enough overnight for you to continue on with painting the next day. The thicker the layer, the longer the dry time but still less time than regular oil paintings. This portrait took about four sessions to complete. The painting will take a couple weeks to cure, at which time you can choose to varnish or just burnish the wax with a soft cloth to give it a nice luster. Try it! ❤️
It’s very fine sand, but I don’t put enough pressure on my bowl scraper for it to damage it. Some of my palette knives have fine scratches but it doesn’t affect the work at all.

Doesn't all that sand trash your bowl scraper and pallet knives?
