On October 7th, 2024, the Karnataka state wildlife board approved a proposal to declare the Hesaraghatta grassland as a conservation reserve. This move is critical to protect the grassland and the fragile ecosystem that has existed for centuries.
The proposed 5000 acre Greater Hesaraghatta conservation reserve is the last remaining grassland around Bengaluru. Despite its unique stature, the process to have the grassland declared as a conservation reserve has not been easy. Watch the story to know more about the Hesaraghatta grasslands.

I grew up in Hebbal in the 70s and 80s. There was a sailing club in Hesaraghatta called Bangalore Sailing Club, which was started by the British. Being a student member, I spent almost every Sunday windsurfing and sailing in the waters of Hesaraghatta lake. This article brings back many happy memories and I salute and thank the environmentalists for their efforts to protect this area. Thank you 🙏

If Hesaraghatta is not conserved , from now on every square foot it will loose will be the reason for depletion of the eco system of 133 species of birds 10 species of mammals , rare butterflies and millions of insects and will be reasons for pollution causing health diseases and disorders which affects future generations
Bangalore will soon be the next Delhi with wildly polluted city.

It's one of last Bengaluru City greater green land we should save this land one's we save this land there will a chain to save may accordingly and we smart enough to save and access to save last lasting till we belong to Bengaluru City let's not be greedy and loose the name Bengaluru Green City we already in silicon but shouldn't we be part of saving ecological balance according which passes to Bengaluru City which let's generates from this land.
As a Bangalore migrant, I have seen Bangalore change from a green city to a bustling metropolis although at a drastic cost to the environment. This is an excellent initiative. After so many heartbreaks regarding environmental destructions in and around Bangalore, hope this remains for many generations to come!

One of the reasons why Bangalore s temperature is moderate could be due to lungspaces like this cubbon park and lalbagh too and we need to take pride in them

I often introduce myself telling that I grew up in the grassland area to the North of Bengaluru.
Hope the expansion of Bengaluru Urban stops allowing natural ecosystem to thrive in and around Hesaraghatta.

I'm a regular visitor here and I see people spoiling this area for fun. Throwing plastic and drunken bottles everywhere. There should be a complete ban to vehicles and food inside the grassland. And I hope this proposal gets approved in cabinet. Sad to see local MLA opposing this, instead of being in frontend to support this initiative. Hope this get's preserved 🙏. The MLA is right, the locals of this place are really left out from bangalore's development. They cant deny them this because some tourists oppose this.

Wonderful documentation and Kudos to the efforts of these gentlemen. I'm verymuch happy and welcome this decision from the state wildlife board.
Can they also shed some light on how this pristine eco system was ruined by the plantation drive conducted by the govt to plant 1000s of tree samplings by digging holes few years back both in lake bed and grasslands? Illegal sand mining which used to occur in the lake bed? Spoiling the grasslands by the film makers in the name of shooting? Over grazing of cattle?
While i applaud these efforts by them, however, Why only highlight motorists and photographer's always by hiding away rest of the other facts?
Examples of such pristine grasslands being spoilt by the govt in the name of plantation drive has not stopped yet, it's the same in KGF grasslands where blackbuck population is close to getting extinct and agriculture encroachment in Jayamangali blackbuck reserve too is not very good either.

Greedy politicians and real estate wallahs have successfully destroyed Namma Ooru Bengaluru. Once Pensioners Paradise, the Garden City became Garbage City and now a Concrete Jungle. Kudos to the people who have succeeded in saving the Hessaraghatta Grassland. I hope that someday I can take a boat ride in the lake, like I used to do 50 years ago.
I was studying in Bangalore during year 1970 To 1975 and staying in Shanthi Nagar Lal Baag Road. Hesaraghatta and Bannerughatta were so beautiful and afterwards everything changed from 1980 onwards when people from North started pouring to Bangalore worst days started.
PEOPLE FROM NORTH STARTED COMING, SO WHAT THEY DID ? I really want to know. How that started bad days for Bangalore ?
@@issacdhan Bengaluru was never planned to grow at this fast pace. Also if you remember or not Bengaluru was called as Garden City before becoming the IT hub.
I would not call North India people only(But Majority people were from north), but all over the world people started flocking here making it grow rapidly in terms of economy, but Bengaluru lost its charm while earning more money.

All credit goes to Sri Ramakrishna Hegde who created indo Danish farm back 80's . Great visionary leader . Even the Nandi infrastructure development project had come in his tenure. If that project with Air Port at Ramanagar and 7 residential cities with 10 IT parks had been implemented , Bengaluru Mysore would have connected long back.

To be honest, we do not deserve the rich nature we are blessed with simply because we do not treat it with respect. Just visit the grassland today and you will find broken beer bottles, plastic litter, and mud tracks left behind by offroading enthusiasts. Today I am glad that they have dug a ditch around the grassland preventing larger vehicles from entering it. If we cannot respect nature, then we do not have the right to enjoy it.

Yea please stay away and keep these lands reserved for nature. This kind of thinking is what leads to a resort being build in the outskirts of a forest and over time, you see garbage and sewage build up.

When I was small it was all green around me but as BDA entered our area it completely destroyed our area snakes were killed , many animal came on road beautiful ecology vanished and now Bengaluru is full of concrete no ecology exists farmers Lan being converted to layouts and big concrete builindings is all I could see. That’s interesting how the wildlife survey only counted ten mammal species. There are easily 20-30 in that area, including many carnivores like leopard, sloth bear, dhole and jackal, with some sightings of Bengal tiger and the small rusty-spotted cat, as well as foxes, jungle cat, smooth-coated otter, civets & mongooses… Other mammals include wild boar, gaur, sambar, chital, blackbuck, and even the endangered Nilgiri tahr. Plus various shrews, bats, and rodents…
Tell us how we as citizens can support these guys and make Hesserghatta conservation reserve a reality ?

If Iam not mistaken this grass land has been declared as a conservation reserve by the CM. So now no encroachment is possible.

We own acers of land beside this grassland, we heard some big project like film city is gonna come up in 2015 fortunately it didn't, Chikkaballapura Ex MLA owns 30acers of land adjecent to this grassland (we heard they gonna build Medical Collage). So, Theres a plan to urbanize this are, if that happens then massive encroachment from Politicians and Real estate Mafias takes place.
