This is the kind of thing that happens when creativity has free reign and commercialism gets out of the way.. minimal, sublime, mellow, sharp, raw, nurturing.. all in one song. Breathtaking stuff. It's about twenty years old now, but "Ocean Machine" (along with all his work honestly) is a great album. This gig in particular was an interesting one, presented in two halves. The first half of the show was "Ziltoid" (the core project of the moment) and the second half was a set which I believe was created by the fans, where Devin put a poll out for the songs people would like to hear live. To that end I think there were a few songs that hadn't seen the light of day live for a while.
AND he was recovering from the flu at the time & this incomparable vocal performance happened after over TWO HOURS of him singing the way he does. He’s not human.

My fave Dev track, even after all this time I still adore this song, and it was on the first album he did as a solo artist. I class it as a spiritual experience, I used to lay in the dark on the floor and just absorb it, the whole of Ocean Machine a lot of the time but Death of Music was always so special, always got replayed again and again. I did it with this, tuned off all the lights and put on a good set of headphones. Incredibel song, amazing performance.
The Z2 Royal Albert Hall show is one of the most consistently perfect shows you will ever see from any artist. They play the antirety of Z2's Dark Matters then a slect list of requested songs. This being chief among them. I assumed he would never perform it as it's quite an intense vocal so when I heard he had finally done it I was delighted, then when I heard it I nearly exploded.
As extra flavour for admiration of the man, he came over and almost immediately fell ill with a head cold, or somesuch. This is the penultimate song so he'd done an entire album and about an hours worth of very intense songs (it opens with fecking Namaste for gods sake that's one hell of a killer on the vocal chords) including Deadhead and Kingdom, before tackling Funeral, Bastard and Death of Music. Funeral is gorgeous and more of a Lament, Bastard is a Lament but with a bit more of edge to it, like he was getting sick of some bullshit; so they aren't simple songs, then into this. With a head cold and 2 hours worth of performance prior. The man is a beast.
Anything from this show is fantastic, Hell I would love someone to react to the whole thing as there is some absolute perfect moments like with Dev doing Anneke's vocals on From Sleep Awake, and all the stuff with the War Princess as well as performance of one of my favourite Bonus tracks from Epiclouder: Heatwave.
March of the Poozers is available though as an official release, well worth checking out. Dont worry too much about WHAT a Poozer is as it's too dumb to outline, just enjoy the track for what it is.
Haven't watched this all yet but responding to the mention of this being 3 songs sort of - the order goes Funeral, Bastard (one of my top favorite songs of all time), and The Death of Music rounds off the trilogy. Death of Music is by far the most unique of the 3 with the ambient basic drum beat and whispering. The 3 songs build up the second half of one of his first albums "Ocean Machine" which is still regarded as one of if not his best album by most fans, the 3 songs are some of the most raw genuine emotion and songwriting he's done so they stand out as greats still. The songs discuss various things, Funeral is about the death of one of his friends which was his first time experiencing the emotions of death as an adult, and this one discusses how that type of emotion can create and influence music.
It'd be long for a video, but I really strongly recommend doing all 3 in a row (from this show) in one sitting in the right order (there's a video on youtube that has them together from this show) since they are an incredible experience together. Probably one of if not the best ~30 minutes of music I'm aware of.

This is one of those songs that changes your appreciation for music. It barely follows a 'song' structure, there's nothing flashy about it really, but it never fails to move you to your core. It's like peak artistry.
Personally, I prefer the Live In Plovdiv version - which you should definitely check out - but the song itself is just a masterpiece. The power, the emotion behind it, the atmosphere it builds, it's all just phenomenal.
Thanks for the suggestion. I find it hard sometimes to explore other versions of live performances once I've had an emotional connection with one, I enjoy several of his Plovidiv live songs, will go check out this one there too since u said its great.
And to know he composed this trilogy of songs when he was barely 20 years old… Let that soak in for a while

I have never clicked on a video so fast! Thank you so much for doing this one! This song is a deeply personal one for Devin and this was his first time playing it live. And he wrote it in the 90s. The RAH concert was in 2015. And, you'll notice if you look at his arms, he still gets goosebumps from singing it all those years later! That's how much he feels his music! As someone else pointed out, the album order is Funeral, then Bastard, then Death Of Music. If you get the chance, sit down and listen to the three in order. They never fail to give me chills.
I did all three, I got Funeral coming next. Yea I loved this so much.
The way Devin plays with textures both musically and vocally is something we seldom see from any artist. Devin is a true artist, never think you understand a song on first or even Tenth hearing because something new will always hit you, sometimes between the eyes, other times in the heart, Death of Music is one of those songs, I have heard this version numerous times and still find something new and special in it. Your look at the end said it all. This performance of Death Of Music moves me more than anything I've ever heard. Devin seems to tap straight into your heart and soul. He is the real deal and a wonderful human being also.
YES! Devin is a recent discovery for me, txs to this channel. I love his work that I've heard so far. I had heard OF him before but never stopped to listen until recently on this channel. There's something about how he sings and plays, constructs his songs, that touches me. TY for the react and for introducing me to DT! ❤ and ✌️

There is so much to Devy. So many styles, so many feelings, moods, deliveries. But whatever he is doing, I believe every word. I feel SOMETHING all the time. It is rare that any music will do that. Devin does it consistently - and he like 20 albums (or more).

You are right. That is one of my all time favorite Dev moments, when he gets overwhelmed during “Funeral” and has to just step away to collect himself. Then someone sent out his dog to comfort him. The image of him petting that dog and rising to finish will always be with me. I tear up just thinking about it.

It's incredible to see this comparison, of what Devin is like without the "wall of sound" that many of his tracks embody. So incredibly potent & blood-stirring into goosebumps! You see that the wall of sound is ofttimes necessary to be more palpable for mortals, restricting it from the transcendence that tracks like this one achieve! This is certainly my favourite of his tracks throughout all the incarnations of Devin (DTP, SYL etc). Thank you for reviewing!
I think this is one of the songs Devin shows ALL of his genius and creativity as an artist. The fact that he has synesthesia and sees notes as colors adds a lot in terms of passion, ambience, depth and perspective to his music. I love his art.

Devin at his epic best. The trilogy - in my view - captures so much of Devin in one place. You obviously broke them up, but that does not make this one any less epic. Glad you are joining the rabbit hole. your face at the end says it all. just silence - lax jawed. Many have felt the same.
Music for the soul. This is the first time I have heard this. I just sat there, with my mouth open, and listened.

I have been waiting for you to do this for a while now. I knew this was going to get to you, as it does all of us - and that you would GET it. The uniqueness, complexity, structure & performance are on a whole ‘nother level from ALL music, but especially today’s largely soulless crap.
To me, I get the feeling one gets standing outside as a tornadic storm builds in intensity around me. The growing electricity & power that makes your hair stand up on your arms & gives you goosebumps, just like it did with him.
As others have said, the trilogy is something that should be experienced all at once in order. There is one vid on UA-cam that has that. It is long, sure, but SO worth it. It would be the perfect event for a livestream. I can’t wait to see you do the other parts!! The blowing of your mind has only just begun, my friend. ))
