i could rant about this book for so long, but what truly irks me is that it didn't HAVE to be bad. like, colleen stumbled into an interesting idea and a potentially very compelling character with verity. she had so much that could be explored, religious trauma from her parents, emotional codependence, compulsory motherhood, post partum depression, blatant preference for one of her children and grieving said child's loss by blaming the surviving one. and instead the best she could do was "evil woman do awful things" and then at the last ten pages "maybe woman not do awful things??". ugh. so SO much potential going straight to the trash.
THANK YOU!!!! He tried to kill her 2 times prior to actually killing her. That’s a red flag sis!!! Hahahah
verity/sally be like “i’m color blind” 😂
I was thinking that the twist was that the husband had actually written the autobiography, because that's what someone like Agatha Christie would do
I thought that would be the twist also!
Foolish of you to assume Colleen's writing skill is anything near Agatha Christie's
The ableism from the moment Sally saw Verity was so gross I stopped reading; so hearing the ending….it makes me sick. Like so many disabled people face violence from their caregivers? And so for the end to the disabled woman being strangled to death for doing nothing wrong….it’s fucking gross.
Ooof thanks for reading snd the reviews! I kind of want to read it just so I can highlight all of the ableism and talk about it on my bookstagram, honestly.
but she was pretending to be disabled
@@Midalias25 Doesn't matter. The narrative in of itself is ableist. The fact that Verity was faking and Colleen Hoover had that in the plot is ableist.
The ending ruins the entire book if the letter is true. Not to mention the fact that Verity apparently fooled doctors and nurses into believing she was so injured that she couldn’t do anything. Needless to say, I will not be reading any more Colleen Hoover books 😅
yes!! all of the logistics were completely wack!
Tried reading a sample of Verity and I could NOT get past the main character acting like her mom just dying is literally nothing compared to the guy's daughter dying. BOTH are devastating, wtf
Hoe she talked about it in the book to me it sounded like she was estranged from her mother, like they didn’t actually know eachother so to her it probably did not feel like her mother passed but just a woman who she spend a lot of time with.
I don’t remember her acting like that. I do remember not wanting to read the book anymore after chapter 1 bc I thought it was not good, but I kept going and by chapter 2 or 3 it got better
Also, how he goes "I've seen much worse!" and then to be upset when she asked WHEN HE BROUGHT IT UP IN THE FIRST PLACE. That was when I had to stop reading. I ended up returning the book. Everything about it was so painful for me.
"Poorly executed trauma bonding" 🤣🤣🤣 I'm dead 🤣
I honestly didn't like the book specifically for all the sex scenes. I was listening to it as an audio book while I was on my commute and every time there was ANOTHER sex scene I was literally screaming that I do not give a damn about this woman's God awful sex life 😂
This was a good review, a few minor nitpicks I had, at one point ypu mention that Sally didn't think at any point to get out of that house but she was constantly saying how she wanted to get out. She legit was always thinking it, she just never acted on it so basically the same thing. But yeah I saw the twists coming, though I will say the letter at the end was a little surprise. But I also don't like how open ended it kind of is? Like the story ends with "Sally" saying "but which truth do I believe? Okay byeeee"
literally so true
i was so sick of reading sex all the time
if i skipped all the sex then i'd be done with the book within an hour or so
See from what I listened to, sans sex scenes it sounded cool that the author could switch to a more mature writing style for Verity. But yeah fast forwarding explicit scenes always makes me laugh
Actually the sex scenes show how muchh she was obsessed with him
All she could think about was to get intimate with him
Even after her daughter's death she would count the times they had last fucked
You changing Lowen’s name to Sally is hilarious. I never knew her name until I got in the middle of the book. It’s true that Jeremy was found in 50% of the book lol
I watched an interview with Colleen Hoover and she was asked if Verity’s letter was true and Colleen Hoover said that she didn’t know herself and that she believes Verity is evil. So even the plot twist is pointless and you literally could’ve just skipped the plot twist anyway and say your finished the book.
i saw that too! like cool not only did i hate the rest of the book now the twist is edgy!?? Hate that for me.
@@alilbitmads yeah, I get that. I feel like the twist could've been awesome had there been more thriller aspects throughout the book. It was just confusing in all honesty
But Verity means the state of being true so wouldn’t it make more sense for her to be truthful? Why did she give her that name if she was just going to disregard it 😩
@@courtneythompson6179 maybe for irony? Like she's suppose to be truthful but is a lying manipulative person? All the characters are psychos
So the plot twist was that Verity was evil? Very surprising
I just finished it and was so surprised that everyone was raving so much about it. It did keep me reading but the ending was a travesty and the writing was very subpar and I’m not usually picky about that.
the mediocre writing is awful! i just don’t get the hype at all.
I couldn’t get past chapter 5 because of the repetitive sex. The plot gets lost in all the sex. Boring. Your hot for each other, we get it! Move on with the story. Biting the headboard during an orgasm? Cmon people! I laughed and totally agree with your review. You saved me from even skimming this poorly written book for a book club. Thank you! Now onto a decent read!
i literally don’t understand why Colleen Hoover’s books are so popular and raved about, they’re all so bad. but she’s got the booktok girlies on a choke hold.
Yeah like, she's literally the worst at describing emotions honestly
Booktok girlies are the ones that have never picked a book
After I read this book my reaction literally consisted of “what the fuck did I just read” and “I don’t think it was that great but at the same time it was?!” Like I’m so confused,, finished like 5 mins ago
Thanks for the validation! I was afraid I was the only person who didn't like this book from the very beginning. Mainly because there is not one, single likable character anywhere in it. And I don't mean that in a good way! Sally (LOL) has absolutely ZERO agency and she spends so much time whining about what a complete zero she is, it borders on some type of narcissism. If anyone in the entire book is even remotely likable it's Verity, because she at least has some form of agency! Even though she banged (no pun intended) on and on and on and on about how naughty she was, to the point of tedium, at least she had a personality.
But I forced myself to finish it because it had been gifted to me by a friend who thought it was awesome and was eager to hear what I thought of it. Well... I had to admit, eventually the plot twists were worth pursuing, even if I didn't care whether Lowen lived or died (in fact sometimes I wished she'd be killed off just so I wouldn't have to listen to her whining anymore.) I wanted to find out what Verity was up to. So I finished it and, yes, what everyone says about the ending being unsatisfying, like one of those "...but it turns out, it was all a dream!" endings, rang true for me. And like many others say, it also didn't make sense, plot-wise, in a lot of ways. A lot of "but if, then why/how?" stuff going on there. BUT! I have a theory. And if you don't want spoilers (even though I know you've finished the book) don't read the next paragraph.
.
.
No, seriously. Spoilers ahead!
.
.
Because there is going to be a sequel. And we are going to find out that....

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Crew did it. He killed his sisters because that's how wee psychopaths express sibling rivalry. Verity figured this out at some point - possibly after he killed the second one. Her final letter and quite possibly her entire "autobiography" were written to protect him. In the sequel he's going to go after his new sibling and nobody will suspect a thing 'cause he's just so adorable. I frankly thought he was creepy as hell from the moment he appeared in the book, but I thought that was just because Harper had never met a five year old in her life and didn't know how one really acts. Now I suspect it might be because she had bigger plans for him.
But I still hope the first thing he does in the sequel is put Lowen out of her freaking misery.
i’m sorry hold up. there’s gonna be a SEQUEL??
@@alilbitmads That's my THEORY, anyway! Time will tell if I'm right or not. Maybe not, especially now that I've "spoiled" it LOL. But if I'm right, do I win a prize? 😁
If you haven't read it, I highly recommend reading Rebecca's Tale by Sally Beauman. It's written as a sequel to Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier (one of my favourite books) and I thought I would hate it but it's SO good. It really is Rebecca's side if the story, told years later through the eyes of several characters with ties to Rebecca and Maxim.
I bring it up because this book reminded me of it, except this book sounds AWFUL and Rebecca's Tale is amazing!
You should read Layla, which is also by Colleen Hoover. It was more confusing than verity. 😭😭
Sally is my mother's name and she would never be this stupid. XD
Thank you for the great rant!
First couple seconds: is this gonna be an issue? nah it'll be fiiiiinee. also like many other people i'm sure i own that same exact Hokusai painting. also, gotta love your rant reviews!
Thank you.... thank you for reading it so I don't have too experience the truama of wasted time.
november9 is such a disaster as well
I’ve heard that! Tbh I had no interest in any of Hoover’s books until this one popped up. Safe to say I won’t continue.
lowen is crazy and na unreliable narrator and I stand by that
I loved your video! I had fun. I actually enjoyed the book but watching your video made me question it lol. Please make more reviews of CoHo’s books 💗
so thankful for reviews like this, because i'm not going to waste my time reading a book for an ending that literally doesn't work.
wow this was the only Colleen Hoover I thought sounded interesting but seeing as how I have not heard anything good about her books I never picked it up and I'm glad I didn't because damn talk about a wasted plot! She had a great idea but fumbled it so hard.
You are one of a kind love your channel. LOL at this video. Thanks for reading this book so I didn't have to. OMG WOW
Found you while looking for reviews on this book after reading it in one sitting, literally. You are hilarious! I almost lost it the first time at the 4:13 mark in this video. While I enjoyed the book (sick, I know!), I enjoyed your review even more. Keep doing these type reviews. New subscriber here 🙋♀
Thank you! Verity is a train wreck and put me off from reading anything else from Colleen Hoover. It's for the best.
It was awful. I want my two hours back. My friends loved it.
wait, people still like colleen hoover?
humanity truely is doomed
thank you i was thinking of read it but afteryour rant which i love not now enjoy your day
I just read it and it’s the worst book i have ever read. Makes no sense at all this book, just dark and strange all the way through.
Also from Vegas!! Hope you’re staying cool in the 116 degree heat today 🙃
AC? Cranked. Fan? On. Going outside? Not fuckin happenin 🤣
I hear it all over Facebook and I can’t bare it
I love your perspectives and how you talk! Im going to watch other videos. Just subscribed 🙃
thanks for hanging out! glad you enjoyed 😊
I gave up halfway through chapter 5 and read a summary 🤣Did not regret it. First and last Hoover, thank goodness.
probably for the best 🤣
I love these rants 💕😂
I dare you to read It Ends With Us 😅. I haven’t read it but yeah
you know what, through the right lens this book could be considered camp!
i don't get people 🤷♂️
I love your review more than the book and that's all I'm gonna say 😂
I know you don’t care for thrillers... I’m just going to leave this review here anyway. 😅 I See You by Clare Mackintosh was pretty good. I still saw the twist, but I kept wanting to see the main character pull through.
VEGAS! I was born in Vegas. I hate the heat.
i thought it was rly good! idk i love CoHo tho... but i get where u are coming from lol
For me Verity is evil and her husband too and Lowen is boring af
So…….. wattpad?
You're so pretty!
yo, what books you got on the sofa
It’s the Dark Tide and Tomie! I have a reading vlog up for them now!
thanks!
I really enjoyed it🤷♀️
I totally agree with you!!! Honestly I don’t get why it’s so popular but then again I’m more a mystery reader and not romance. Soooo. Much. Sex. Very little plot….
Wow...I am so glad I clicked so fast.
Sex sells. That's why.
I loved the book!
THE ONLY CHARACTER I PERSONALLY LIKED WAS CREW LOL
OMG I HAVE TGE SAME SQUISHMALLOW
By just the warnings, I know I'm going to have to pause, fill up my drinking jar with soda and open my laptop. I love writing while listening to people rant on horrible books.
a coworker recommended it, i thought it was a easy read and didnt hate it but i didnt enjoy it either. the twist could of def. been better.
We were liars (another overhyped book) looks like such an awesome book compared to this trash 💀 Now I have a good reason to rip this book into pieces and throw it away
I'm so glad I'm not the only person who thinks this book was lame!!
I just finished reading Verity yesterday, and it was awful. I don't think I've read a book that is more ableist than this one. I mean, Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon is pretty ableist, but this was even worse. And as someone who is physically disabled, I found it incredibly offensive. I'm not disabled to the point Verity 'was', but I'm still physically disabled, and this was just awful. The way Lowen described Verity was literally disgusting. When I went into this book I expected to get grossed out during the sex scenes. I'm a sex-repulsed asexual, so I was like "what am I getting myself into". It's honestly sad that I found the ableism to be more disgusting than the sex is baffling to me, not to mention incredibly problematic.
Heard this girl was a good author 😢 then coincidentally found this book in a little free library .. thought the premise was good and finished it in one day ., but geez it was disturbing and wacky and had to completely skip over the pointless sex and weird stuff and complete lies
You are my spirit animal! So funny….talking about such a ridiculous book.
When you said that the author's book was from the villains perspective, I immediately thought "oh no, it's based on her husband"
Oh my God, I remember this review of this book. Someone did one of it and I just recalled it. Thanks for spoilers, now I won't have to read this garbage.
She has the weirdest character names. Verity. Really? Crew? Really?
I really liked this book. I read it for a book club going totally blind into it. Everything is over the top (from the title to the romance and thriller parts) but in a pleasant way. It's really dark and wtf so that's probably why i appreciated it. I understand your point of view though.
Insane ableism levels
Oh god it was unbearable. Lol. Cringe and just makes.no.sense.
**SPOILERS FOR THE ENDING**

the way that the twist ending essentially goes "well actually the whole thing might have been a misunderstanding and jeremy tried to kill his potentially innocent wife THREE SEPARATE TIMES but it's okay either way because he was being a good father. life goes on bye :D". like JESUS. i was so hoping for a twist that showed jeremy as morally grey but colleen somehow managed to STILL see him as perfect and blameless even WITH a "verity is innocent" twist. she genuinely had verity herself say "you tried to kill me twice and i'm pretending to be bedridden so that you don't try a third time before i can run away from you, but i don't blame you because you're just being a good father" 💀
what the-
I loved this book, but hearing you review it is so iconic lol
I genuinely think that the book is great, so anyone reading this, read it before watching this video lolllll XD
Maybe it's because it was my first Colleen Hoover book, but I genuinely thought it was awesome. I've heard her other books are really meh, so maybe that taints how people read it lol. I wish she was a thriller author instead of romance, as this is her only thriller.
u sorta described the twist in a bad light, the twist was more mind breaking bc then it looks like verity was actually a good guy the whole time. I think you might have missed a few major pot points and details that if u paid more attention would have made the book better, or u didn't like it but idk why cuz its soo good ):
She definitely misrepresents a lot of parts of the book, that actually make sense in context, but not at all the way she explains it leaving out key details and plot points. To me this was an amazing thriller, with a crazy ending that keeps you thinking about it for a long time, the only negative was the excessive number of detailed sex scenes. But then again I love creepy, messed up books, with unreliable narrators, sociopathic people, and ambiguous interpretations.
Idk, the ending felt last minute to me. If I consider that ending, there's things that don't make sense. For it to make sense, Verity would have to be the bad guy or Jeremy would have to be the bad guy. Since the author didn't make either, it's just kinda dumb
I think you have to love dark, intense books in order to get the appeal of this book. I loved the book because it was easy to read, got your feeling emotion, and I viewed it as a cautionary tale to go with your first instinct (She had bad vibes about him the first time she met him). And I actually think the manuscript and letter are both true.
It's not even that dark, there are darker and a lot better-written books. The "dark parts" are essentially bad jump scares.
Thank you!!!
I listened to an interview with Colleen Hoover as guest and when she mentioned that she has been friends with EL James for a long time and basically thinks of her as an incredible writer, I knew I would never reach for a Colleen Hoover book. Every review I’ve heard of this author sounds exactly like they are describing E L James books. I’m sure they are both wonderful ladies but seriously their works are so elementary. They know what readers of a certain type who like books like this, meaning no meat in the story, just side dishes, will read and buy. There have been several authors I remember from the 60s who wrote books like this and they were for a certain audience. Lonely, bored at home, bored with their lives, need an escape for the daily stuff, etc. Authors like Jackie Collins ( Joan’s sister) Grace Metalious ( Peyton Place), Ira Levin ( Stepford Wives), etc. are really good at feeling the temperature of what readers who are lacking love in their life, need. I grew up with watching my mom hide books like the above, where as now they are displayed on coffee tables because apparently nothing is private any more.
