I first made this drive in 1989 up to the mile high swinging bridge. Was surprised by NO guardrails. Just a word of advice to new mountain driver's, make sure you have strong breaks and a strong transmission. Going up is easy, going down downshift transmission to 2nd gear so you don't burn out your breaks. And always keep the overdrive off. The oxygen at the top is thin. They do have emergency oxygen tanks inside if something happens .
Thanks for the awesome video! I plan on going to Grandfather Mountain for the first time but I'm not that great of a driver and afraid of heights. If I veer off can we ACTUALLY die from the height or will the trees and boulders block us?
The road is very good and if you go slow and steady you should not have a problem. The walking bridge was very busy when we were there. The bridge itself may not be a good spot for height issues. Thanks for watching and commenting!
