Nick you're so blessed to have a stormtrooper wife like Rachel, my wife would not have even considered such a hike , she would have been going: I'm ready to turn around, I'm not doing this no way!!....I had no idea this was all that was involved to climbing Grandfather mtn!, I must get back up that way, thanks you guys, love yaw!
She definitely overcame some fears doing that hike 🤣 it was a really fun one though we're both glad we did it! One of the most fun hikes we've been on! Hope you get a chance to check it out! Appreciate you watching and commenting as always 😁
It was gorgeous we picked a perfect time of year to go! The Appalachian Mountains during peak season are gorgeous! Thanks for watching we appreciate it 🙂
Means a lot coming from you we appreciate it! It was awesome and I know you would enjoy it! I remember you talking about it in your video of the Blue Ridge Parkway I got me interested in it so we looked it up and decided to make a trip just wanted to do it when it was cooler. Thanks for watching!
🤣 nice! Yeah getting the hotel sold out from under us in the middle of the night with a nice surprise lol We need to invest in a little camper! At this point we're pretty used to hiking on a little sleep lol. Thanks for watching 🙂
Great hike! If you start at Grandfather Mountain State Park, you do not have to pay to park. There are several campsites along the trail and you can access Calloway Peak and the swinging bridge from there. Another great parking area is along the parkway and the hike up from there to Calloway passes a crashed plane. Definitely plan an all day adventure for this area. Out and back can be a long day. Thanks for the video. I’m sure it was gorgeous at peak leaf time. It can be cold up on top even during the summer.
Thanks for the information we definitely plan on going back and I want to do the 11 Mile Trail next time! I think it was called the profile Trail. And I'm pretty sure that's the trail of the plane crash is on. We definitely want to go back it was gorgeous!
The blue paint on the rocks reminds me of East side Boulder scramble hike up Pinnacle Mtn in Little Rock, Ar. Just follow the red squares… eventually you get there! 😜
Ok, now that looks like some fun! Maybe a tad dangerous too, but that just makes it a good story to tell later! Wow, views are quite epic. Good call on not having folks coming to search for ya lol. Going on the list, thanks so much for sharing! - Shane
This was probably our favorite hike of the year! Really challenging but very rewarding. Beautiful views all the way to the top. If you ever get a chance definitely do it if you're comfortable with climbing ladders. Thanks for watching 🙂
That is a great hike...my wife did that one summer many years ago! We have pictures of us standing at the top! Thanks so much for sharing, it brought back great memories!
Holy cow this looked rough. Our family will just watch you adventurous kids. It also looked really windy to be just hanging from a side of a mountain. I get a lot of comments on our wind mic also. The view though looks so good. Especially since the foliage looks so pretty. This could my favorite one from you guys.
Man it was such a fun hike! We had a blast can't wait to go back and do it again one day! It was extremely windy. Rachel was getting blown around pretty easy at the beginning of the hike. It was gorgeous up there with all the leaves changing. Definitely one of our favorites as well! Thanks for watching 🙂
Squirrel Tail!! Hahahaha! Things that only UA-camrs are asked! That looked like an epic hike. Kids would love it but I'd be a nervous wreck the whole time... both for me and worrying about them. Looks like the views and the experience would be worth it though. Good job filming in less than ideal conditions!!
It seems like someone comments on every time I take it out lol figured I would leave it in the video this time lol I know I would have loved to have done that hike when I was a kid! Would definitely be nervous so if I took my kids up those letters. The views were incredible the whole way so glad we got to do it! Thanks for watching guys 🙂
Well if you guys are ever in the area you can still drive up to the part where the swing bridge is you ain't got to do the ladders. It was an awesome trip we had a good time! Thanks for watching 🙂
@@hikinghighandlow5661 North Carolina has a lot of amazing trails! Not too far from this mountain is the highest mountain in the southeast Mount Mitchell. Hopefully do that one this year!
We were here a few years ago and the views truly are amazing! What a joke with the hotel- thats just terrible. We hiked only a portion down to a cave close by the base. I had no idea all those ladder existed! Wow!!
It was awesome I'm so glad we made the trip! Yeah thankfully after calling hotels.com we got our money back finally. Well if you're ever up that way again definitely check it out!
The wind was terrible that day I'm surprised we didn't get blown off either 🤣 that was definitely one of our favorite hikes we've done in the last several years! Can't wait to go back 😁 Appreciate you watching and commenting! Was it the first video you ever seen of ours?
Thanks for the video of my former backyard. Never seen views of this hike. Great angles! Rachel said, "Don't look left." That's where the views were. Glad she conquered fears. Come back any time!
I always tell my wife it's not how you get there as long as you make it happen. There isn't a right or wrong way it's however you get there! Thanks for the video now it's on our list!
Wish we could have gotten there earlier! If we weren't filming we definitely would be able to hike a lot faster lol can't wait to go back there and do it again one day! Beautiful hike as you know 🙂 Thanks for watching 🙂
I attempted this with family. At the time I was afraid of heights and freaked out at the ladder parts. I have done a lot of hikes now and ready to attempt this again. Still afraid of heights but ready to conquer my fears one activity at a time.
It can be pretty intimidating! I promise you once you go back and try it again and you complete it you'll be extremely proud of yourself! And you won't carry that fear with you anymore you'll be able to do more! You'll be able to do all kinds of cool adventures like this going forward 😁 Excited for you!
@@NickandRachel Thank you very much. I have already done some pretty intense hikes including some very scary ones in Hawai'i ( backway to the Haiku Stairs and Ka'ala). Hopefully I am ready for this one.
Thank you for sharing this hike! I have seen it come up a few times when searching for hikes to do and have wondered about all the ladders...and now I know! Too bad you weren't able to make it all the way to Callaway Peak. I always find it a bummer when you can't finish a trail/hike. My first time hiking Mt Elbert, the highest peak in Colorado (14,439 ft), we were about 45 minutes from the peak when we had to turn around because of a thunderstorm that rolled in. The next attempt was a success because we camped at the base and started at like 5am, but still ran into some thunderstorms on the decent, which was a bit intense, but made we made it to the top and checked it off my bucket list!
It was definitely a fun hike! We will for sure be going back probably do the Daniel Boone Trail in and make it an overnight next time! That's awesome I can't wait to start hiking mountains with that much elevation! unfortunately there's mine on this Coast so we got to travel across the country lol. glad you got to go back and finish that's awesome!
My little brother lives in Boone, and I want to do this hike but man, those stairs are TERRIFYING! Did the Half Dome Cables about a decade ago, so maybe I could muster some courage to be as brave as yall!
Fantastic hike! It's definitely like a painting from up there. 😍 I don't stretch enough either. 🤣 3-4 hours of sleep...ok, we can hang then on astrophotography nights. 😁 Why do they hours in the park? ☹️ Nicely done.
Man it was a really fun hike we really enjoyed it! We weren't sore after that hike believe it or not we thought we would be my feet kind of hurt because we took a different route down and it was super Rocky but that was about it. I'd love to get into after photography it looks amazing! I guess because it's a state park and they shut down maybe I'm not sure. Thanks for watching!
That looks so beautiful! Going up would be amazing, but I would probably freak out going down, ha! I love y'alls videos! If you haven't hiked the Twin Arches loop at Big South Fork, please do. And you can camp at Pickett CCC Campground.
It was gorgeous going up and we took a different route down! It was really Rocky wouldn't go that way again lol We'll have to check that out we've never heard of it! We're really glad you enjoy the videos and appreciate you watching 🙂
@@NickandRachel good to know that there's another way down. So I will put this back onto my bucket list! 😜 If and when you hike the Twin Arches Trail, definitely do the longer 5 - 6 mile loop, not just the one and a half mile loop. Start early and enjoy!
Excellent video! This was by far one of my favorite videos to date. Between the scrambling and the views, this trail looks like it has it all. Great job!
Thanks man we appreciate it! This was definitely one of the most fun hikes we've done for sure! Probably the best one we've done all year. Sweet next time we'll plan ahead and I'll let you know!
Hopefully you wrote a terrible review for the hotel who decided reservations don't matter. We have seen this from a distance twice now (the Blue Ridge and atop Rough Ridge). Looks like a lot of fun and nerves. Maine has a lot of ladders and rungs for their crazy hikes too.
After about three times of calling hotels.com they gave us a refund. Never did leave a review on that hotel though. If you're ever in the area and you definitely need to do it it was awesome! Oh yeah I seen some videos from different ladder hikes in Maine looks really fun! Thanks for watching 🙂
@@NickandRachel it seems like effort, but no one will know they did that to you if you don’t let others know. Your channel is about showing people the outdoors. Sometimes you have to show people sketchy hotels too (not necessarily on your channel 😁). And yes - next time we come down I think we have to do this. We usually take a yearly trip to my dad in NC
Hey again guys 👋 Whoah - just starting this video and the hike already looks epic!! 3:13 that ladder climb looks so scary especially when people are both going up and down on one ladder! The rock scramble loos super challenging. The view from the top is just INCREDIBLE - nature as far as the eye can see 😍 Tom would love this challenge!! Thanks for another great vid - see you again soon 😊
If you ever get a chance to do that hike or anything like it go for it it was awesome! We definitely got our eyes set on more challenging hikes now! Thanks for watching 🙂
This definitely a tough one but it's fun! The more you do stuff like that the easier it gets though as you know. If we would have did that hike a few years back we probably would have been pretty scared but I had a blast! Thanks for watching!
Nice job tackling one of our favorite NC hikes. It is so great to see others face their fears in our backyard. The place is amazing! We liked the rarely seen footage of Nick….climbing up the rocks. That is a challenging section! Sorry you had lodging issues - but nice job on limited sleep!
Yeah we're practically used to not getting no sleep considering we have to leave from Georgia after getting off work lol they were both really enjoyed that hiked and so glad we made the trip! With the lodging issues it's definitely making us think we need to get a camper or something lol if we ever decide to leave Georgia we're definitely headed to North Carolina we love it up there! Thanks for watching 🙂
I'm a little tired just from watching you on all those ladders. This looked like a pretty tough hike to tackle on limited sleep, even if you didn't go all the way to Calloway Peak! The views from MacRae Peak were awesome 👍
It was an amazing hike can't wait to go back! I only had like a mile to go but on that terrain it takes longer to navigate because you got to be careful. If you ever get the chance give it a shot! Yeah the hotel being sold out from under us with a nice surprise in the middle of the night lol
Super awesome video guys, that looks like so much fun! I could tell how much you enjoyed your hike there even despite your unfortunate circumstances with the hotel. That's what hiking is all about, hopefully I will get down there some time in 2022.
That was definitely her favorite hike of the year so far! The views were incredible and it was really fun climbing the ladders! And we picked the perfect time of year to go. Next time if you're visiting this area during October skip out on the smokies and go somewhere on the outskirts it's not as busy. Thanks for watching 🙂
Oh my gosh that was an extreme hike. Wish all that climbing plus you had the added. Wind issues or did it calm down as the day went on? It didn’t look as windy while you were climbing as when you started. The views from the top were spectacular.
It was a gorgeous hike and I'm so glad we made the trip up there! And the wind was really bad it was blowing Rachel all around lol they started to come down pretty good after the ladder section. Thanks for watching 🙂
That hike looked INSANE! The camera angles captured it perfectly. I really want to check out the mile high bridge, but idk if I could do that hike. Great job!
I honestly think any person whose actively Outdoors could do this hike just got to put your fears away and go for it! It was a beautiful hike probably our favorite one we did this year! Thanks for watching 🙂
Awesome video!! We are doing it the first of April and hoping the weather will be nice then...rethinking if we should've done it during peak lol. Amazing color! Rachel...what shoes did you wear for this hike?
You're going to have a blast! It was gorgeous during peak season for sure! I'm wearing the altra superior 4. They have a new version out the 5.0 now I think. But if you're interested in them we have a review of them on the channel if you want to check that out.
Hey, glad you made it up there and at a beautiful time of year. You made that look easy conquering those ladders! Did you go back the same way or take the Underwood trail? No way I was going back down those ladders after making it up there.
It was a gorgeous especially when you reached the top and look down and see all the beautiful colors! We went down Underwood Trail we figured it would take less time but it ended up taking about the same because that trail was so Rocky.
a bucket list hike for me - I will be 61 in March - I could do this but not as fast as you guys seemed to be going. How long did it take you to complete the hike - I am a firm believer that you don't know if you can do it if you don't try. I would just want to go with those who took a lot of breaks so it may be better to wait for more daylight. This is a fabulous video and you captured far more than a lot I have seen.
You could definitely do it if you're in good shape we did it with a man who was like 65. Not real sure how long it would have taken us because it takes a while to film these videos. You should allow yourself at least 5 hours though. I will wait until you get more light try in the spring time. Get there early and take your time. Thanks 😊
Hello Nick and Rachel! Another fun adventure. Thanks for sharing. We'll be visiting family and friends at the East Coast for winter break and then, thinking of either hitting the Carolinas or further east to Vermont/ New Hampshire area. Do you think Grandfather Mountain would be a good winter hike or leave it for Spring/ Summer time?
Thanks! I think it would be good any time of year as long as you can handle the cold up there! If you're used to it being windy and cold then I don't see why it would be a problem. As long as it's not iced over you wouldn't want to be climbing ladders in that.
Everyone's got a different tolerance for hikes like this It just depends really. I would say if you think this video looks intimidating take someone with you and go on a clear day and make sure it's not windy. But you can't go down a different way You don't got to go back the ladders.
@@NickandRachel thanks I think that's what I would do the angle of the camera makes it look intimidating. What hike is this? I am trying to find it on all trails and do u need reservations?
Grandfather Trail to Callaway peak. You can extend the trail though if you would like. When we went you didn't need any reservations but you might need them now there was like a $20 fee to get into park though.
Yup happened to me at campground in Cherokee NC I book rm months in advance cause I was building a storage office in SC so I took break get there they say yea no rooms oops we rented my cabin to someone else yea I didn't have a tent and fk that cabin was around cenote a night hot tub jacuzzi .I dove around found one just off campus but hidden in woods and they had real meals 😋
That sucks I've had that happen before during peak season a lot of people will sell rooms out from under you! Really crappy thing to do it's always best to call them that morning and tell them you'll be running a little behind or what time you'll be in to not sell your room.
This is a cool awesome place ... We cant wait to get back there soon!... it was a great hike indeed!.. we actually hiked it twice!... see you guys around!... please check us too !.. appreciate it!

@@NickandRachel good to know that there's another way down. So I will put this back onto my bucket list! 😜 If and when you hike the Twin Arches Trail, definitely do the longer 5 - 6 mile loop, not just the one and a half mile loop. Start early and enjoy!
Actually put it on my list earlier! Thanks
Excellent video! This was by far one of my favorite videos to date. Between the scrambling and the views, this trail looks like it has it all. Great job!
Since you are inviting people, I would like to join you on the next adventure to Grandfather Mountain!!
Thanks man we appreciate it! This was definitely one of the most fun hikes we've done for sure! Probably the best one we've done all year.
Sweet next time we'll plan ahead and I'll let you know!
I'll just watch the video...thanks guys.😀
Well I hope you enjoyed it 🙂 it was gorgeous up there!
Thanks for sharing ✅
Thanks for watching 🙂
@@MagellanandGreyhound yeah that's true. AWESOME! Lots of cool places in that area
@@NickandRachel no worries! Will definitely be challenging ourselves this year with hikes 🙌 you've definitely inspired us to push us further 💪
Awesome! I've seen this Mountain on a channel called Jim Hayes. Amazing views and looks like the hike lives up to its reputation for being tough!
@@NickandRachel there are so many cool places to see and things to do in that region it can be a bit overwhelming!
@@WALTERZOLNA yeah you definitely got to plan ahead of time to have a good trip
Dang! Way too windy for me. Great views though.
It was crazy windy that day! It was worth it though for the views 😁
@@NickandRachel I've hiked that area before, but about 500' below. Try to visit Linville Falls, if you haven't already.
@@dougchaffin2608 we have plans to check that one out! We did a North Carolina waterfall road trip last year and made a video it was a lot of fun!
@@NickandRachel I hear ya!
Awesome video. What brand of pants are those Rachel? I could see my lady friend liking them.
Glad you enjoyed it! The brand of leggings are "North Face".
That area is near Linville Gorge right? Makes sense why it was so strenuous, the Gorge is no joke.
Yeah I just Googled it it's around the same area! Definitely going to have to check that Gorge out!
a bucket list hike for me - I will be 61 in March - I could do this but not as fast as you guys seemed to be going.
Thanks 😊
good morning
😁
Good morning everyone
Good morning 🙂 hope you enjoyed the video
@@NickandRachel Thanks for the info.
You're welcome 😊
Um, no. Don’t think The DaubSquad will be hitting McRae peak anytime soon. Yinz are very brave!!!!
Definitely plan a trip there one day it was awesome!
Oh, Hey Mrs. DaubSquad wants to know what kind of shoes Rachel wears in this video.
Those are the Altra Superior 4.0. she really likes those!
Wow…..like how did you get down???
We went down a different trail but you can go back down the ladders. That was an awesome trip!
get to the ladders, freak out, and not wanna do it? i feel mildly called out😂
Yeah 😂 They are so much fun though! You gotta do it!
@@NickandRachel its on the list of things to do. just tryna recruit a homie to push me on the high stuffs. lol
Awesome! You'll love it
Hi! How scary is the hike to get up on the top and to come down? Could you do this hike alone or best to have someone along with?
I watched hang gliders jump off in 87 right there.
That would be awesome!
11/26/21 Winds continue to wreak havoc on the outer ridgeline of Grandfather Mountain this morning. Peak gust so far is 102.1 mph
That's insane! I wish I knew how the wind gust were the day we were there they were pretty bad when we first started.
This was an awesome hike and we definitely want to go back! Thanks for checking out the video 🙂
