My opinion...Best bassist of that era. Most tasteful and creative bass lines came from him and they enhanced the songs. That's why he's me favorite ever. Your rendition of this is the best I ever heard too.
I don't dare say who was the best bassist of the era (actually I don't even agree with the concept), but JJP is one my role models in music (along with Neil Young). His approach and talent in bass, piano and keyboard (not to mention mandolin and so on) have always mesmerized me.

I always wanted to learn this song
This is one of those numbers that you learn along the way, and your appreciation for Mr. Jones goes even higher.
Anytime Led Zeppelin is mentioned, everyone talks Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. In truth, John Paul Jones was a very BIG PART if not the BIGGEST part of that Zeppelin sound and vibe, without him there would be no Led in the Zeppelin.
He really helped set the standards for the subtle security that secures the foundation for others to shine from.
I started on guitar due to Pagey, named my eldest after Pagey's daughter, and I completely agree with you.
I've recently returned to playing bass (used to play guitar and bass), and Lemon Song is my all time favourite bass tune. Could already play this but have to admit I'd missed some of the variations. Great to have this extra detail.
Anyone that has listened and grew up during the time of Zeppelin realizes each member is equally as important as the other.
I was in junior high and remember too well the day Bonham died. wondered if Zep would continue. Led Zeppelin was only as good as all members together

I hear the first note of the high A on the riff played as a quarter note alternating with it as two 8ths at other times.

I knew from the very first time I heard this song that the bass player was something special, even though I wasn't even a bass player at the time. It's that right-hand speed, particularly on the A change that gets me. I'm having difficulty getting that kind of speed....I just can't play it that fast yet and keep it clean. Thanks for breaking it down, Mark.
Take it slow. The way to play fast is to play slow, as ridiculous as that might sound. At a slow speed you can focus on co-ordination between the hands and overall good technique. Then you build up speed. Simple. If you can’t play it slow you can’t play it fast.
JPJ was (and presumably still is) a massive James Jamerson fan.
That’s where a lot of it comes from.
John Paul Jones is a beast, most of what he did was amazing, to fit in he had to bè legendary, so he was t-y

And JPJ never played the same thing twice 😅, he was famous for amusing himself by making up variations to just about every song, like the jazz guy he’s always been.

Just want to add that I think JPJ was 22 when he wrote this bass line.
I was thinking about your comment about JPJ being only 22 when he created this riff, that's mind boggling! It's so much fun to play, incredible talent. He was a really good all around talented musician! He played everything, great keyboard player, I wonder about his training.

Because this part goes so fast and Jimmy's gtr is so prominent, I've always had difficulty trying to play this part correctly.

When it comes to bass players, JPJ (and McCartney) is God, in my opinion. I try hard to learn every bass line JPJ ever played and learn it correctly. I don't always succeed.

Another fantastic lesson. As always, I think there is no way I can get this, but you break it down so well and make it so manageable to learn each part. You are an excellent teacher. BTW, I just bought my first Jazz Bass, a Classic 60s and put on flatwounds. I love that tone.
You can easily emulate the sound of flats with round wounds anyway. Unless you have multiple basses I wouldn't bother personally.

John Paul was an integral part of Zeppelin. But, to be honest, without any one of them it wouldn't Zep the way we know them.
Totally agree. One of the rare cases where each member was of equal importance.

I was really hoping that you would have covered the entire song. John Paul Jones' s bassline throughout this masterpiece flows in contrast to the acoustic guitar and seems to be in the fore front of the melody on the verses, then seems to fill out the back end with the percussion on the chorus.
and no 2 bars are exactly alike...
Mark covers the important riff and avoids the copyright infringement. Thanks Mark for showing us this, the rest of the bass can be transcribed straight forward from the recording. The attention Mark gives to the details is why he is the best instructor on line IMO.

Thanks for this. I've been playing bass about 5 years. I always thought that if I could learn this song I would be a bass player. I have it down pretty good except for the fast A riff part. Based on your demonstration, I feel like I could sit down and get it under my fingers.
once you have the fast part of ramble on down, you are halfway to what is hip.
yep...exactly as I remarked above. The speed on the A change is the killer, plus muting the D string when necesssary in that part.

According to JPJ he stopped using flatwounds during his session days before joining Zeppelin:

No, Rotosound roundwounds. I stopped using flatwounds during my session days; they were a bit too thumpy. The Rotosounds gave me better clarity, and I also needed the sustain-if Robert stopped singing, there were only two of us minding the shop, as it were. I’d change the strings every week maybe; I’m not sure.

Any tips on how you get that tone?
I just cant play that fast bit fast enough.
Ive been trying for about 2 years, and I get just a little bit quicker after each 12 months.
I can just about play it at 90bpm.
The rythm is hard to be always ON timming for this song its the slow parts
