    I really appreciate how you teach these songs in the same finger positions as the original artist! Much respect!!

    I’m a guitarist of many years and stumbled across your video while looking at the Nile Rodger’s parts to this song, what a fantastic lesson this is, explained in exactly the way everyone can understand. Brilliant work 👍

    I’ve been teaching piano and bass for almost 20 years now, and I can tell you are a super experienced teacher by the way you explain things. It’s a real challenge to show students a riff, explaining both the components and the bigger picture at the same time. You’ve got it down, bro.

    Excellent video. There's many YT vids out there laying out the bare tabs and notes, but this riff is 100% about the stacatto feel and those ghost notes. Nailed it, Mark!

    That's a great thorough breakdown and explanation of the riff. The note C# included in the riff makes sense when this is a E Dorian tonality.

    Fantastic lesson. Syncopation is the key to this riff. You explained and demonstrated it perfectly.

    Well done on showing it the correct way. Much more punch than relying on the open A and D for the ascending part.

    Great lesson as always!
    quick tip to nail the 16th notes:
    listen to the original song and focus on the piano, it will cue you in to play either the open E or the open A. Once you've listened a few times, those piano notes will be there in your head... Or you can always badadadadada pa TA

    You are a great teacher. I had a bass guitar when I was 17, I was pretty crap (drums I was much better at) and sold it soon after. I bought another one 20 years ago and still was crap but did manage to learn a few bass riffs. That didn't last long. Now I have 2 basses which I bought online after over indulging in wine! Cheap price but good for what you pay for; Ibanez SR300EB and SR305EB both in 'weathered black'. I'm 50 now, never too late to learn again. But the 5 string is feels like a totally different instrument and I can't get used to it. More practice I guess.

    There are all kinds of different tutorials on how to play that riff. Most stay in the first position, which doesn't sound quite right and isn't according to the few videos of the original. This way to play sounds spot on and I'll have to learn to play the riff different from what I've been doing so far. Thanks for showing this.

    Another great lesson especially as I am a massive fan of funk from The Meters, Graham Central Station through to Rick James, Flea and beyond. 😇
    But as you asked for suggestions for future riffs, although one of my all time favourite bass players is Glenn Cornick of Jethro Tull, a player who is often overlooked or simply forgotten to the mist and fog of time. Bwcause of this scant little attention is given to his amazing bass playing on the tune Bouree, if possible could you give it some love and attention?
    Or just more funk because funk is still fantastic 😎💞😎

    • @talkingbasslessons
      @talkingbasslessons  6 років тому +6

      IT's not actually purple. It looks it but it's actually bronze/blue. It's a special effect where it looks bronze from one angle and blue from another and you get all these cool combinations between. Really nice. Martin (Sims the builder) said it's actually black but and it's an optical illusion.

    The very first F# (of the A A F# D? G F# A fill) might just be a pull off to open D instead of an A note. Identical hand position but subtly smoother and easier to play

    Good Times is one of Bernard's easier bass lines.
    There's plenty of more technical bass lines by bernard.
    Everybody dance
    My forbidden lover
    And many more
    Etc etc.
    Why do people always do good times.
    I don't get it🤔

    • @donh5794
      @donh5794 Рік тому +1

      Good Times is probably the most well-known song and bassline; however, all the aforementioned songs, bass lines and more are just as well-known to true fans. The first Bernard Edwards riff that I learned was in "I Want Your Love". I also enjoy the bass fills he does later in the song. Many others are on my list including:
      * Sometimes You Win (Bernard plays bass and sings solo parts too)
      * One More Time - a Sister Sledge song that he played the bass line on.

    This is a terrific breakdown of the first four bars of "Good Times", but it basically ignores all the rest of the song. It's a bit like showing the first four bars of, say, "Psycho Killer" and ignoring the rest of the song. Next time, teach the rest of the tune. It's pretty easy and you were already doing a great job with the main riff, so why not spend about 7 more minutes and teach the bass line that's used for most of the tune?
