The Base - The Power of Story Basing - [basing techniques]

- The Base, a necessity to keep your miniatures from unfortunate gravity related injuries. But also, given some thought, can bind your army together and complete your visual idea. This video contains conceptual thoughts and some specific techniques. Most specifically, how I based my Gnaw [Squig].

Fantastic video as always Alex! I've always been a fan of your basing style so it was great to see the thought process behind it ✨
Thanks Dana! Bases are strange beasts. Quite a lot of paintable surface "real-estate" but always trodden upon :) And can determine the look and feel so much. Even the neon green "grass" that used to be a thing in the olden days... can actually look real cool if it fits with the entire idea. Anyway :)
If Goobertown is the Bob Ross of mini painting, then you are the David Attenborough. Best writing and production value around
Ha ha! Thanks N! I appreciate it :)
What a poetic video - the way you envision basing is exactly how basing should done; reinforcing the story of the miniature and holding the disbelief of the materials actually being used.
Thanks B!
52 minis releases a video.
Me: time for my moment of Zen..
Ohhhmmmm
Definitely....i rly love the style of the videos!
@@d1v3r87 aye, it's always nice to see modeling/painting videos where you don't feel like yr being shouted at and i feel that the tone of the 52 miniatures, overall, make them a joy to watch and learn from.
Goddamn, the content quality is stunning.
Such a pleasure to watch your videos after long day of work
Cheers mate, keep it up!
so much this
Thanks Andy!
Love your style of narrating!
Thanks R :)
Just wanted you to know that Alphacast, a french streamer who got into minis recently despite being a fan of the 40K universe for a long time, mentionned he watched some of your videos as a beginner and said it was top quality. I don't know what you are gonna do with this info but I thought it was cool
Thanks Vaskal! Yeah.. I don't really know what to with that. I tried having a look at his UA-cam channel but everything is very... French and Je ne sais pas parles le french kind of a thing :) But I'm glad he likes the videos. Thanks for letting me know.
@@52Miniatures What I can tell you, but that you already know, is how great your work is. Keep it up ^^
It's interesting to hear you speak about storytelling through your creations because your videos are not exempt from that inclusion. I absolutely love how your narrative blends in with the visuals on screen. You're not simply talking to a camera. 9 minutes flew by. As someone who is just now getting into minis, thank you!
Welcome to the hobby Chris, glad to hear you are joining in :) And welcome to the channel. Thank you for the comment, I appreciate it.
Wow. You are the only guy that makes a 9 minute video feel like a full on tutorial. Your presentation is as flowy as your superglue 😁
I hope I don't age like superglue... eventually not even flowing out of the bottle.
Apart of learning value, I just love watching your videos for some chillout after a long and hard day. Good work! Also, you have really soothing voice.
Glad to hear it E, thank you.
That color scheme is top notch. I may have to copy that for my Descent Into Darkness pieces. The idea of having a cohesive look is really appealing.
Please do :) Thanks MB
Just found your channel from Luke at Geek Gaming Scenics - love the content, you are incredibly talented my friend! Top notch quality 👍🏼
Thank you! That was a very nice thing of Luke to do :)
Your videos are like listening to poetic essays about mini painting topics
Thanks N, that warms my heart a little :)
@@52Miniatures so too do your videos for a lot of viewers
This time I wrote down the ideas that inspired me, one day my basing game will be up there as well.
Don't ever change your style of humor/narration, it really makes the vids come to life that much more!
Great to hear Frank, and thanks :)
Not only excellent exceptional painting but basing as well , I really do enjoy watching your videos they are always different and easy to follow . Take care my friend Terry
Thank you Terry, I appreciate this a lot :)
You have such a great way of presenting yourself and to show your humor. I love to watch your videos for the great Tips and the funny puns :D
Glad to hear it Seregor. Thanks!
Thank you so much for the care and time you take for each video. I eagerly await each one! Stay safe....
Thank you for watching :) you stay safe too
Love your videos. Much needed sophistication and wry humour. You are a tonic!
Thank you Rowan, greatly appreciated.
Your videos not only inspire ideas for my hobby, but they relax me to no end. Keep it up! :)
Thanks Matt!
Ahh new vid! Let me get my cosy blanket and some tee
☕ I think this is supposed to be a cup of something hot.. but I'm not sure. UA-cam does not seem to specialize in emojis.
Lovely old books! 📚 seeing minis displayed like that made me think of Home Raiders (a defunct game of scale 1:1 minis, meaning your house furniture is actually the scenery for the fame).
I'm still amazed how the content of your videos drifted from the very early zenithal priming and dwarf skin 'basic stuff done for the 1st time" to this.
Looks like it started at the cabin in the woods looking at birds and trying out that airbrush ;)
Great work Alex, as always.
Oh my goodness, I googled Home Raiders... that is a great idea. Imagine the sea battles in the bath tub :) I think you are right in a way Javier, at least doing those two live streams. I think they made me realize that just doing what I personally would enjoy might also be enjoyable for others and that ideas and thoughts is something that can bring us together regardless of hobby skill or experience. I admit, I like "getting better" at painting but trying to inspire with thoughts feels more universal. Like you've said before as well, I can show one thing but talk about another... it takes the edge of things it think. Anyway, rambling on. Glad to have you around.
I enjoyed the watch, thanks for the continued content. I’m happy to imagine your direction of making videos that interest you (rather than chasing an audience) working well. I certainly appreciate the direction myself.
Thanks S, I am appreciating it as well. And having fun.
honestly ur like what gina carla did for asmr for the hobby world. the creative flair and story arc which you create is just out of this world for something so simple
Well thanks Carl :) After googling Gina I'm thinking I now at least need to get a proper haircut.
Fermented grape juice bottle caps are really useful in the hobby. Great video as always.
They just keep turning up from nowhere. Strange that
Most under rated hobby channel around
I am having fun thought :)
There is something relaxing about your videos. They're a joy to watch.
If you ever run you of ideas to film, you should make videos like the old "Warboss Tae" videos, where he just sits and smalltalk, while he paints :)
Thanks Michael :) I'll have to check it out.
ooooh yes, after a bad day at work, a new 52 miniatures video! perfect! thank you for your work!
all the best from switzerland
My pleasure Saka!
Another great video! The bit about bases unifying models of the same faction, but with different paint schemes was particularly helpful!
It works real well :) Thanks for watching!
Not gonna lie, that little piece of sprue numbered C2 almost gave me a heart attack when i saw it goes through the foam, but then i saw the finish detail and DAMN incredible base!
Thank you Pedro! I was a bit hesitant where to "permanently" put the sprue... but it turned out nice :)
I've been following you since your first videos and it is amazing to see how far you have come. Production is top notch and the story telling makes it easy to follow. The content is great and you manage to deliver new insights or at least knowledge from a different perspective, despite so many miniature painters being on UA-cam. I am looking forward to see many many more of your videos
Well thanks Eugen, It gladdens me to hear that you've stuck around for so long. I'm enjoying making the videos right now and glad for the response :)
This more concise and clean video approach is a massive leap forward! Keep up the good work!
Thanks G, I'm sure the "all over the place" ones will be a reoccurring theme though 😂
@@52Miniatures don't get me wrong, I like the random tangent rambles from time to time but this just flows really well!
So happy to hear your under "adult supervision" while undertaking some of the more "dangerous" aspects of your mini building...
It's but one of the reasons why I subscribed to your channel...
Another being, your videos (and work) are very good, entertaining, and informative!
"Much obliged," from The States!!
🖒😎
Thanks Michael. A bit of adult supervision can go a long way 😂

The effort in the videos and the comments section is just amazing!! Truly dedicated to your work! The first UA-camr I’ve genuinely considered joining their patreon
Well thanks Elijah, I appreciate hearing this.
So glad I have come across your channel. Your production level is brilliant and you have such a well suited voice for these voiceovers. Excellent content, I am glad to enter this community!
Welcome to the channel Frankie, glad to hear you like the videos :)
Basing using a philosophy far above our normal base instincts, inspiring is what it is. No matter what the subject is, I come away from your videos having learned something - often several somethings. Cheers!
Glad to hear it H! I appreciate it.
Great video, really glad to see you only had a vague idea when you started making the base! It comes out looking so good that I always thing these must be intricately planned out. Didn't even realise the lamp was a necron gun :D
Thanks Jack, yeah.. it would just be so much time planning without really knowing what happens when the mini goes on. One step at a time often leads to the next, for me :)
Hello. I subbed recently to your channel and have been watching many of your videos. The way you present them is way more than, do this, do that, tutoriels. You tell a story at the same time and make it more entertaining ang relaxing to watch. When i do bases i consider them like a frame for a picture, they have to be complimentary but not take away from the artwork itself. All the best.
Thank you R, I try and expand my horizons a bit in the hobby and I'm glad that sharing my thoughts are appreciated. I agree with you, the mini should take main stage. I will get to that in another video further down the road :)
Nice video and one awesome channel, I heard of you in a podcast a few weeks ago and you quickly became one of my favorite mini painting youtubers. Keep up the good work and stick to your unique style.
Thanks R, I appreciate it. Was that "trapped under plastic"?
@@52Miniatures exactly
Once again, I can't stop admiring your colour palete, so much my taste.
Thanks Oskar, as always :)
Always the most thoughtful video-magazine like format content from your channel. Love your work.
Thank you Daniel. I very much appreciate hearing this.
Subbed today. I love the idea of story telling in basing. Luke's gaming sent me here. So glad for a quality find.
Welcome Nathan, glad to hear it. That was a very nice thing of Luke to do :)
This is wonderfully narrated, beautifully assembled and painted, and perfectly sums up my love of and aim in basing. Keep up the amazing work!
Thanks K, I appreciate hearing this.
How did I not find this amazing channel sooner?!
Sorry! “Deactivates cloaking device”
Looks great a good scenic base adds a lot to a model
Thanks BGG!
This is a really valuable and well done video. You've inspired me in two ways: 1st as a new youtuber myself, I love how tou crafted a narrative with the video and 2nd as a painter I love the narrative and techniques of the base itself.
Thank you P, I am very glad to hear this.
Congrats on another excellent video. I'm not sure which I loved more; the editing or the basing.
Hopefully a good combo :)
I actually thought the base came with the mini when I watched your previous video... amazing...
now that was a very nice compliment :) Thanks Dusan!
Another great video ! Always a treat to get a notification when you release something new :)
Thanks JV, I appreciate it!
52 minis let’s me know everything is ok 😊
paint, or at least consider paint, and all will be ok.
@@52Miniatures There it is :)
That's it !! I have finally catched up !! Took me quite a bit of time as I found my first job, I didn't have that much time to watch your videos.
I am impressed but not really surprised as to how much your channel has grown since I have started watching your videos. Your content is top quality to be fair so it's not really surprising. I should take the time to comments several of your videos that I watched since my last one but I prefered watching what I could.
I am really glad that you are still doing nice videos and that you are recognized for it. Once again really great video!!
Thanks P, I’m glad to hear it. Let’s hope for more good videos to come :)
That's such a great base. Absolutely unreal.
Thank you very much!
Excellent as always!
I did the same with my storm cast, one type of base and many colour schemes!
Thank You. It really does help tie things together I think :)
It's all about that base! Great video, as always. Informative, inspiring, funny and so well made. You have a fan for life man.
Thank you RK, I'm glad for your support and engaging comments.
great cadence, humor and videography
Thanks CS, I appreciate it.
Your videos are excellent and the base came out beautifully! This channel has very quickly became one of my favorites c:
Thanks Ripley and glad to hear it.
found my way here from the Geek Gamming channel. He was not wrong. Great content
Thanks Bob, it was very nice thing of Luke to do.
Another great video! So glad to see the channel is growing too. Well deserved.
Thanks Jay, I appreciate it as always :)
Glad to see your channel is growing quickly. Quality video as always!
It's like a clogged up airbrush. Fast, slow, nothing, everything :) I am glad for the recent acceptance though :)
Fabulous video. Those bases look incredible.
Thank you!
Always such a pleasure watching these. I've started a new army this year, and using the story in Age of Sigmar, have based my models in a similar manner. It really does tie all these models together and help tell a story. A+ video!
Nice Kenny, what army are you working on? Or have I asked before? I must admit I mix up comments...
@@52Miniatures haha I'm sure it's hard to keep them all straight! I'm building an Anvilgard army at the moment. After it's destruction from Broken Realms Morathi.
@@GatecrasherPod lovely!
You are inspiring and your video's must take a great amount of time to make, thanks a lot for this video (and the others I just watched following the link to your channel / plus the ones I plan on watching later this week). All the best to you!
Thanks Tim, they do tend to get out of hand during the creation process... but I'm having fun :)
Just finished binging your channel and BAM! a new video :D
Good material for sand in miniature scale is tile grout. Comes in a myriad of colors and a bag will last You a lifetime,
I myself bought a half kilo bag a few years ago and still didnt even make a dent in it :) Something to concider, maybe?
Im mostly making scatter terrain for Gaslands (20mm scale) so even regular sand looks like quite big rocks.
Yeah, I haven't gotten into tile grout yet.. not sure where I can hide the bags in the apartment. But one day :)
Great video, and very entertaining story telling - Keep up the great work!
Thanks Henrik!
again. 10/10 Alex. Just keep it up mate!!!
Thanks Sasha, I'll try to :)
@@52Miniatures Just do what you have to do. Like we talked about, don't let the algorithm ruin this for you. We enjoy it, and if that means a slower release pace, so be it my friend. The purpose is enjoyment, not output.
@@sashav6847 Thanks Sasha!
i tend to find basing somewhat meditative (and, often, when i feel a little burnt out on the hobby, generally, making a few bases can really pull me back in.)
not to mention that it can help make a mediocre paintjob into a decent mini!
so thanks for this one.
Thanks D!
Great content as always mate always keeps me laughing while I work!
Thanks Tom!
Just found you on midwinter minis ~ love the white book swatches. Love the bases xxx

Glad to hear it V, welcome to the channel! And thanks :)
Haha in the gnoor vid I thought this was a sculpted base that came with the mini. Nice work!
Thanks Liam :) quite the compliment!
Great story telling! You have inspired me. Thanks!
I'm glad to hear it T, thanks for letting me know :)
Awesome video!! Keep up the great work!
Thanks Andreas
I like those bolt action bases. They are small in height and smooth. I prefer those over the standard bases all day :)
Nice!
... under adult supervision. Great! I also wonder which book antique store you raided for all those foliants! Nice setting, again great visual detail in the video - not to mention thanks for sharing your insights on the details of how you built the squid's base.
Thanks C, it's books from my grandparents house :)
I love your videos, and the storytelling is excellent. If I may pose a suggestion however; the colour filter applied to the videos alters the representation of the minis quite a bit, maybe for close up shots it could be reduced? Best regards, looking forward to the next one!
Thanks Kyle! Everything I film while I'm working / painting I keep neutral. So like in this video, all the actual building of the gnaw base, is neutral. The "story" bits, I try and be a bit more creative. But good point.
Very nice, thanks again, my friend.
Thanks Jesse!
Audiobook quality sound there, mate. Love the video.
Thanks Vyr, I appreciate it.
That was great. Nice work.
Thanks Robbie!
Stormcast Ninja Raiders may be the best line of the year so far.
Thanks Kevin!
Another great vid! I’m building up confidence to start on those Stormcast figures. I like the cobble roller.. have to keep an eye out for one of them. Nice job 👍💯
The rollers are a real treat I think, I'm surprized not more companies make them.

Your patreons thank you for that, it will give us uncountable hours of laugh and fun
Ha Ha! With bonus cork bark :)
That is a very impressive library your using as terrain.
Thanks J! It’s old children’s books from my dads childhood home.
Beautiful video, good job
Thanks!
Your narration is superb!
I have the same "problem" as you, I don't want my army to be uniform...and since they are all chaos demons I paint them in different colors. But I also base them differently depending on their chaos god patron. Chaos all the way :) At least when I'll do single chaos god smaller armies, they'll have consistent bases :)
Ah! That's nice and I can definitely see why. I would want my Nurgles to be on something sticky swamply and my Khornes on something more bloody stoney.. kind of a thing.
Exactly! Just add skulls to the blood for Khorne ;) And I have crystals for Tzeentch and some crackle paint with patterns underneath for Slaanesh.
Yesterday I got a 3d printer. I've been looking for simple things to print while I learn to use it. Custom bases may be just the thing.
Exiting Fossil, I haven't dared go there yet. And I don't really want one in my home... but one day I'm sure :)
Very cool and inspiring!
Thanks J
Awesome! More Alex? Yeaaah
Thanks Marshal!
Thank you Alex

If you don't want to handle lighters to tighten your foam, a heat gun works too
Great video again, I am the exact same when doing my basing you gotta just do it there and then. I was wonder what was kind of texture paste you are using for you basing? Thanks and keep up awesome work.
Thanks! I have been using soilworks, work out great.
Commenting to salute your sense of wit :)
Also, random question- are you collecting vintage books?
Thank you C :) I wish I was, but not yet. These are from my grandparents house, mainly "children's" stories that where read to my dad.
Nice quick video :)
Thanks Matt :)
The scripts are my big black holes. A script takes pretty much a day. That darn base took it's time as well :)
Ha, and there goes your reputation for wit and wisdom. Still, one out of two isn't so bad :)
The base was totally worth the effort though and did a lot to ground the squig in its setting.
@@MrMatthewPR on the contrary Mat :) "adlib" wit comes easier - writing it down actually requires knowledge in spelling stuff.
@@52Miniatures Writing is what I do for a living so I'd probably struggle more with keeping up the entertainment factor. You do a good job with the scripts regardless and the spelling will get easier with practice - just like painting.
