Fantastic song which brings back many memories. I went to see them at a small venue when this song first came out. My mate and I were try to learn to play guitar so just before they started playing this song we asked the guitarist what chords he was playing . He told us and then whilst playing the song, he called out the chords to us so we could see exactly what he was doing. I was about 14 at the time and it made a huge impression on me. Great song, great band.

Wow. I saw this band back in in 1978 in a shitty little club in Norwich (now a branch of MacDonalds). Had the single but haven't listened to it for 40 years or so. Blew me away! This so good. That's what 77 was all about!

@@davidharrison9324howsabout this... I played this in my first band, Matra Fact. I live in Canberra, Australia. We heard it on a Rough Trade compilation, Wanna Buy A Bridge (?)
A few years later, 2 members of my best band, Black Dogs (who played an even better version of this song), & I played Armalite Rifle as part of a play, American Days. The British TV version of the play starred Toyah Wicox. The woman who played Toyah's part in Canberra, 1989ish, is the woman I always thought of when I sang The Mekons' line: "You had yellow hair- did you see me?"
Anyhoo, how fucking good were Gang Of Four?
I still listen to them. Leeds, eh? Who knew?

When I was about 14/15 we played this in my living room with our band while my parents were away (about 1978/9) we lived on a council estate and had complaints from about 1/4 a mile down the road because of the noise. Happy days :-)

You had yellow hair, did you see me?
I loved this song, this punk track way back in the day....& many more of vintage punk ilk at the time.
Just now in 2023, listening to this....in my early 60's - I only now realise how much I UNDER rated it as a song, way back then!
    Fecking Brilliant!

John Peel played this a lot in the late 70's. The drums building to a crescendo at the start just builds the excitement. Big John Langford was the powerful drummer. Heady days. There are quite a few gems like this in the punk era. Great guitar riff.

This takes me back! I heard it while watching Adam Curtis' excellent docu-series, "Can't get you out of my head" and I knew the tune instantly but it was such a while back I couldn't recall the name but was determined not to look it up and then once the programme finished it came to me, as did the single which was a treasured part of my collection. Great, great record and firm supporters of RaR (Rock against Racism) of which I was an active member. The Mekons had to brave one of the ugliest and most violent branches of the NF(National Front) the then erstwhile, infamous neo-fascist shitheads of the day who tried to attack and wreak their gigs but they held firm. They did us proud and my generation owes a lot to these pioneers and others (Gang of Four, The Raincoats, The Slits, The Pop Group to name a few) of real muzak instead of the mainstream pap that we were subjected to by Tony Blackburn, Noel Edmonds et al.

Ace tune. Whenever I hear the start of this and that great build-up - it reminds me of charlatans and sproston green , especially when they do it live. Great post & thanks.

I was a teen in the 70's, and in my 20's in the 80's, and it was brilliant !!!
I was into so many "post-punk" bands it wasn't funny. Of course the gigs were the best.
