  • Hair loss from chemotherapy came with lots of anticipation, anxiety and unknowing. I knew one day it would happen, and when it did I wanted to be as prepared as possible. This video provides 5 tips to help you both mentally and physically prepare for this daunting experience, as well as a few positive things I encountered through this process.
    1st tip: Find understanding.
Something that helped me was the answer to this question, "WHAT causes the hair to fall out during chemotherapy?" What I discovered was that the chemo is designed to target ALL rapidly dividing cells and doesn't differentiate between healthy and cancerous cells. It just so happens that the cells in the hair follicle are also rapidly dividing cells, therefor they are also targeted and killed.
2nd tip: Have fun with it.
How often have you seen a style that you thought was cute, sassy, edgy, classy, or bold that spoke to you, but was so different, or so drastic that you put trying it out on the backburner. Now, is the time to have some FUN!
    3rd tip: Prepare head coverings.
My go-to for most days was a toque from BK.co. When I felt like dressing up, blending in or creating a new look I would wear wig. I know everyone is different, but for me this didn't happen often. The last head covering option I played around with was head scarves.
4th tip: All about the brows.
I never really got the eyebrow craze that was happening all around me, that is until I began losing mine. I didn't realize how much that one feature made my face look like... my face. If you've got the time, you could go to a local cosmetic store and get a lesson, as well as support in picking out a color that matches your current brows. Another option I've seen, which is really cool, is 4D stick on temporary eyebrow tattoos.
5th tip: Lean into the positive.
I was surprised to find that throughout this journey there are a number of silver linings hidden throughout the fight. In my experience, I had total body hair loss. So forget about shaving and start thinking about endlessly smooth legs. For the longest time I had psoriasis on my head (was itchy and I always brushing little white flakes off my shoulders), but it disappeared when my hair did and never returned! Another bonus was being able to get out of the shower and not have to do a darn thing to style my hair! The last thing that stuck with me as a positive to my hair loss, was how incredibly empowering it was.
