Interview can be summarized as: Ayaan "I'm here to talk about the facts of Islam in the modern world and how we can encourage it being reformed as less violent and more tolerant" John Stewart - "SO yes, as we were saying about CHRISTIANITY..."
@@DerekADempsey ikr??all rhese leftists stand with Palestine, and are against Islamophobic until someone criticizes Ialam then muslims go bonkers and these radical leftists are stabbed in the back LOVE IT WHEN THAT HAPPENS
Seems like the moment she came onto stage he'd already decided what attitude to give her. May as well have had Ben Affleck behind her yelling "GROSS!" "RACIST"
Some interesting facts about Ayaan Hirsi Ali: 1- She wholeheartedly believes that Israel's PM deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for waging a war on Gaza. 2- Her story about running away from a radical Islamist family is mostly based on lies, her family reached out the media and debunked Ayaan's "forced marriage" narrative and she almost lost her dutch citizenship and was on the edge of getting kicked out of the country when the dutch government found out that she *lied* just to be granted an asylum and a dutch citizenship when she didn't deserve one in the first place, she's literally a fraud. She's a vile, hard-faced, backstabbing, cruel excuse for a human being. It's heartwarming to see Jon Stewart showing Ayaan her place in this Daily Show episode. I can definitely see that he did his research on her before having her on the show, no wonder a lot of Right Wingers were triggered in the comments section here, lol.
+Unknown Don't you think her family sees her as an apostate? Of course they would lie to the media to tarnish her reputation. She definitely didn't lie about getting her clit mutilated!
Unknown "She's a vile, hard-faced, backstabbing, cruel excuse for a human being" This is quite a claim. Even based on your two 'facts' about her, it's astounding that you've come to that conclusion. Can you link me to what you have read or seen which made you form this conclusion about her. I need to see it for myself.
Unknown The quote from the first article is not so insane. I'm sure she could give you reasons why she thinks Netanyahu deseres peace prize. (to be honest, he could wipe clean Palestine whenever he wants) The second article doesn't seem to prove anything. Clearly it's written by a single dude who is just giving his opinion. The title of the article includes, "The lie of a forced marriage". Then he writes "She had an arranged marriage, not a forced marriage, to a Somalian immigrant to Canada.". I think this writer (who is a male Indian and used to arranged marriages), doesn't appreciate that 'arranged' marriages can be seen as forced in some peoples eyes. Otherwise I see nothing he raises as suggesting an issue with Ayaan. It's all speculation. He chooses to believe the family of Ayaan over Ayaan herself. I think the family have every reason to lie. Ayaan only has a reason to lie if you believe this guy's narrative that she is just taking advantage of her feminitiy and making people feel sorry for. (I think this is questionable claim when written on a website called "A voice for men") Are you sure John Stewart knew about all this before he interviewed her? Why did he let someone who he thought was a liar onto his show, and then go on to plug her book? Seems like mixed messages I personally thought he was just against her views on Islam. This explains his attitude and also explains why she was actually allowed to come on the show. Contentious views are okay, lies are not. As for the third article. Allegations will have to wait till confirmation. I'm not clear on what they are claiming she lied about, nor why it should have any affect on my opinion of her. But mainly, even if ALL of these things are true, why does it mean her message should not be listened to? If she's lied about herself in order to spread the word that women are subjugated under Islam (which is just a fact), then I can't really blame her
brod2man Of course arranged marriage is *nothing* like forced marriage, I know a lot of Saudi girls who went through arranged marriage and they were completely allowed to refuse the marriage proposal, hence why it isn't considered "forced". She's a liar, and as Jon Stewart said at the end of the video "You're just saying that to sell your book." he laughed it off, but he most likely really believes that she's just criticizing Islam to make a buck out of it, not to help women. She's nothing but a tool for right wingers, and by the way, there's literally no logical reason behind saying that Netanyahu deserves a Nobel Peace Prize unless you're just a racist/Islamophobic who hates Palestinians, literally that's the only reason to even suggest such a ridiculous thing. Malala Yousafzai is way much braver and a much more influential feminist to middle eastern Muslim women than Ayaan Ali.
So.. An ex-Muslim who is specifically critiquing Islam cannot critique Islam, because Christianity? I get that Jon needs to keep it funny, and this is tough material to do that with. It's so important to listen a bit more to folks like Ayan Hirsi Ali, so maybe this is the wrong platform for her.
+Neanderthalcouzin Exactly. She critizes it because it fucking affected HER life. She got genitalia mutilation from islamic culture, not christian. She was (almost) forced married to a cousin by islamic culture, not christian. She has got death threats from muslim for leaving islam, not from christians for leaving christianity. etc. Christianity hasn't effected her life, so why should she criticize it more than islam?
+Kevin Uchiha Sorry but their is no such thing as "Islamic Culture" Genital mutilation is a (mostly) Somalian culture. So don't you mix them both. And Ayaan should be criticizing her parents not Islam for the behavior she faced. She is a liar.
+shasaf 123 not an islamic thing? Ahmad Ibn Hanbal 5:75; Abu Dawud, Adab 167., Abu Dawud 41:5251, Sahih Muslim 3:684. And it's not just somalian. All over the world in muslim communities. Im talking about 70%-80%-90% and in some areas as high as 97% (egypt). In Malaysia 93% of muslim women are victims of FGM. Oman has 90%. Iraq has 72%. In muslim communities in indonesia the number is 97.5%!!!! This is in no way just a Somalian problem. Not even mainly a Somalian problem. It's a world wide muslim problem.
Interview recap: Ayaan: Islam needs reform. I've devoted my life to it, and I desperately need your help, and that of western liberals like you, to save the millions suffering from Islam. Jon: Yeah, yeah, yeah, but what about Christianity, though.
@@ahm512 people suffer from islamists. Especially if the islamists are nationalists too, then even sunni minorities will suffer. The Kurds are the best example of that.
@@ahm512 didn't stop the turks, arabs and persians with oppressing tens of millions of Kurds and killing tens of thousands, maybe hunderds of thousands of Kurds. We also believe in islam, but it did not stop the slaughtering. Even now in modern times, we are still oppressed by our so called "muslim" brothers. Is that islam? Does islam say arabs/turks/persians are superior? No. That is why islamists are dangerous. They add nationalism and mix it with islam. Sadly, all muslim countries do that. Political islam is the religion of the devil, since politics is a devil game in its self.
+BizarrePower Maybe, but he's trying very hard to introduce a relativist perspective. Probably for his own sake so as to not challenge his own ideas of bigotry.
+GainsbourgSerge Interesting that the guardian, known for shoddy and extremely biased reporting would publish this. Gus Van Dongen, supposedly a "renowned Dutch TV journalist" doesn't appear even once when searched on Google or Bing. Not even a LinkedIn page. Not only that, but if you search for confirmation of this story, all that comes up is "anti-Islamophobia" blogs and sites citing the guardian article, which has 0 sources or citations. Smells like horseshit to me.
This woman is the true definition of a hero. If we have 1000 people like her we would live in an incredibly improved world. Jon Stewart is a worm. His argument is fallacious. His motives are, though uncertain, disgusting.
***** Actually, The Prophet Mohammed (Peace and blessings be upon him) warned against any type of aggression against anyone. IT's just not fair to blame someone who stressed that mercy was the best way to go, that when someone attacks you, forgiveness is better than revenge, it's not fair to blame him whom the majority of Muslims emulate, thus their being moderate and peace-loving. If you watch Shaykh Hamza Yusuf's talk on ISIS, you would know what i'm talking about and why the majority rejects these dogs.
Lady Fatima All Muslims worship Muhammad, who was a paedophile, a terrorist and a warlord. He also installed Islamic jurisprudence, making him an Islamic dictator. This is who Muslims aspire to be.
Lady Fatima The vast majority of Muslims in the world are in favor of Islamic jurisprudence, but disagree on small issues. Most factions support stoning homosexuals, adulterers, apostates and "pagans".
So Jon's logic is "Other religions went through a period of necessary reformation too, before I was born. But now that I'm alive and have the ability to contribute to Islam's much needed reformation...I'm just going to slow it down by talking about Christianity!"
+Tom Cotter Jon Stewart is actually trying to get her to state her point, which she has none. She's literally up there pulling bullshit out of her ass whereas he's showing how easily he can see through her bullshit. She faked her credibility to get into Netherlands and was recently kicked out due to it. SHe's a fraud.
+Tom Cotter Jon called her bullshit out on each "point" she made. She gave no evidence, no ideas as to what she thinks should be done, and Jon pointed out all the flaws in her logic
+Imaad Mahmood She very clearly states that she wants to empower reformers within the religion of Islam, then Jon responds by deflecting to the topic of Christianity's history. Comparing modern day Christianity to modern day Islam is a false equivalence. It's as if someone said, "Hey, Cancer is really bad! We've got to do something about it." And then some idiot chimed in and said, "Yeah, but Polio was really bad too though. Sooo, like, we can't be talking about Cancer so harshly...."
@@WhutzPoppin it's not for you to decide. While we, from the rest of the world can clearly see what a great intellectual woman she is. Ofcourse, orthodoxies will keep hating her for eternity, but remember, people like her, who no one thinks anything of are the ones who does things no one can imagine. She's courageous. And i salute for her. Maybe 100 or 200 years, when islam finally gets reformed, then some of you might realise her importance
What on Earth is Stewart's point? Christianity used to be a plague on humanity too, hundreds of years ago. You really felt like spending the whole interview stuck on that? That was terrible.
Wow. I feel like I lost all respect for Jon Stewart after viewing this. He doesn't even let her present her thesis before he comes with the age-old counteraguments.
It's called "white guilt" to people sickened with white guilt people of color can do no wrong and the only bad culture is white American and the only bad religion is white Christianity
His show is not about bigotry hate and personal revenge as she is all about , she is dead wrong about everything she said , Quran is not written by men
@@imranklair9352 What? Even if Islam is true, the Quran was written down by men who followed Muhammad. Islam says the Quran was dictated to Muhammad through the archangel Gabriel, and since Muhammad was illiterate, someone else had to write these revelations down for him.
Yeah I felt like his interview wasn’t long enough for her to be able to say what she wanted to, and he was ignorant about even the basics of her book, life, and perspectives. She is an amazing person and is famous, although not as much in the USA.
Jon is trying too hard to compare her supposed islamic reformation to the actual christian reformation. Look at the word "Reformation." RE-FORMATION. She wants to change the way islam is interpreted and how muslims act, which is similar to what happened in the christian reformation, but that does not mean that this islamic reformation needs to follow christianity in any other way. Just because the christian reformation was violent does not mean that the islamic one has to also be violent. And just because the christian reformation was violent does not mean that it was bad overall, it had very positive effects on the world.
@@codectified Yes, her agenda to make the world more peaceful. Unlike many people she does not argue for destruction of the religion but for the reformation.
Islamiphobia would suggest an irrational fear, there's nothing irrational about fearing Islam, especially if you're a woman, gay, jewish,or a different sect of Islam.
Pastafarian5 You're right. It's not like Islam acknowledged the spiritual equality of women over a 1000 years before the industrialized world acknowledged women were 'people'. Oh wait, they did. Shoot. It's not like Islam gave women the right of inheritance and divorce in ~650 AD. Wait, they did that, too. Crap. It's not like the man sent with the message of Islam said to his followers as part of his final sermon that the best men amongst them were the ones who were best to their wives. Wait, that, too. Arrgh. Maybe your understanding about how they deal with other groups/people/religions is a little incorrect as well?
Look into her story. Imagine making it through all of that alive, just to have an American comedy show host make a mockery of the plight of millions of women in Muslim countries. I lost all respect for Jon after watching this. Pathetic.
Honestly, I just read her book “Infidel” and wanted to watch someone interview her. Jon was so ignorant about her life story and ideas and all she has contributed to the world, the interview was shallow and sad.
Jack Fuller she makes a living like everyone else tries to do doesnt mean she is only saying and writing those things so she can make money but maybe you dont even know her story; She was sexually assaulted and castrated i doubt that didnt have an impact on her and seems like she actually means what she is saying. But of course you can ignore all that and just say its all for the money but you sound dumb.
chaz Davis You're a fucking idiot. Ali believes that female genital castration is a Muslim tradition, when in fact it's an African one. The practice even pred-dates Islam. In Niger, it's practiced by 55% of Christians and only 2% of Muslims. Even the Beta Israel Jews of Eithiopia practice it, in addition to animist groups. There is no reference to it in the Qur'an. Ali also considers male circumcision, practiced by both Jews and Muslims, to also be genital mutilation. I don't hate her (in fact, I've even come to respect her this past year), but the reality is that she makes a living peddling books and made a living saying some hateful things in the past.
Jon! That was incredibly pathetic and delusional. I'm really tired of the ignorance and lack of reason and common sense when it comes to Islam. Ayaan FTW!
My heart doesn't even bleed for the kind of ignorance you appear to be afflicted with eidius1989 . I definitely don't regard Jon Stewart as courageous in attacking Ayaan with his unfathomably fashionable false equivalences.
Sky Savourer What were these so called attacks? What question was a direct attack? did he ask about her sources for her 70% figure? or lack of mention of other criteria or are you referring to the fact the he was not an echo chamber so she can hear her own bullshit. Please clear this up as I am so ignorant.
Straight Shooter bullshit - she's been attacked almost continually since renouncing islam. Even in a supposedly secular and civilized country like the US she still to this day requires security to protect her from "peaceful" muslims who regard apostasy and criticism of islam as crimes punishable by death. And yet despite her courage in standing up to this violence on behalf of oppressed women and minorities everywhere, she is vilified by leftist apologists because what she says goes against their fraudulent, anti West anti freedom, SJW narrative.
@@Nimuel This woman is a laying scumbag She lied about her nationality She lied in her immigration report And worst of all she wants a military war against muslims Don't believe me read reason magazine interview yourself
I loved to read the Quran back when I was a child. Little boy in Baghdad. When I started to understand it I saw God Or Alah is F**n mad. My rational mind have made me an athiest. I totaly agree with Ayaan Hirsi Ali
Do other muslims call you uncle tom? Or traitor? Or you don't even tell them because they would actually harm you for it? In my experience it is not the best thing to live in the middle east if you are an atheist... and that is putting it mildly.
Anyone can understand it. Its a fable. It has some good messages as long as you ignore the violent parts and stuff about women being worth half of a man.
Jon has given me much joy over the years, I love him and the world he created. He was an obstinate, obtuse A hole to Ayan Hirsi Ali. I kept thinking he must have a grudge against her. Of course I'll read her new book as I've read all of her other books.
Stewart missed the point of the reformation. Christianity underwent a fundamental change. The teachings of Christ became more important than forcing people to convert. God went from a vengeful god to a loving god. "An eye for an eye" was changed to "Turn the other cheek". It had nothing to do with "I'm more pure than you".
Stan Parrish "'An eye for an eye' was changed to 'Turn the other cheek.'" To be fair, such a radical change already existed since the first century as taught by the Son of God (see Matthew 5:38-39). The reformation was less about a change of "what's written in God's Word" but a change of implementation of "what's written in God's Word" (i.e. actually following what's actually written or not adding stuff that's not there)
Joshua Chao You are absolutely correct. I do not know how the early church could have strayed so far from the lessons that Jesus taught. To force people into a faith discredits that faith. But with the reformation different sects could put the emphasis on the teachings of Christ at the forefront. The "Eye for an eye" was Hebrew history (Old Testament) which may have helped early civilization to survive. "Turn the other cheek" as taught by Jesus helps us evolve and become closer to God.
+Stan Parrish You are looking at the Reformation as a transformation over the centuries and the development of modern Christianity. Jon Stewart is seeing it more narrowly with the Wars of Religion (Thirty Years War et al.) and not in terms of its eventual theological results.
+oremfrien Can't argue with that. But that is really the point. Christianity evolved to reflect the teachings of Christ while trying to leave our barbaric human natures behind. Unfortunately we do not see the same happening with Islam.
The key point is accepting that the book is man made. Christians won't say it explicitly, but implicitly believe it when they ignore certain parts of the bible. Muslims must do the same.
I personally think sometimes that the Quran is man made, yet certain doubts arrive. For example, Muhammad was illiterate and known among his people as an uneducated man but with many virtues. However, he could bring, say and read all things in Quran. Whence did he get what in the book with such eloquent language? Almost all studies show he didn't take the Quran from anyone. Moreover, one of the fundamental principles of Islam is to believe in the Quran as the word of God, so it's uneasy for a Muslim to claim it's man made. I'm a very peaceful Muslim, and I don't think Islam must necessarily be blamed for terror acts. But instead the people who are with a stupid mentality and kill in the name of it should be lambasted. I have doubts about every existing religion though, especially after my reading of science and the origin of the universe. Nevertheless, it's still very difficult to ask a Muslim to leave Islam or to wipe off his/her religion. Despite all my readings of science's discoveries, there is still that fear to entirely decide to leave my religion, for I might be losing the right path without being conscious.
shuaa nidal Respectfully: what do you think about the fact that the extremists claim to take their inspiration from a "pure" reading of the Koran? As far as I can fathom, their reading of it appears to be as correct as a fundamentalist Christian's reading of the Bible.
Harold Smith It's either extremists know nothing about the book and the way in which it should be interpreted and understood or they try to impose such false meanings and perceptions to Kuran. Unfortunately, religion has been always used to subdue people and to try to achieve a certain self-interest.
shuaa nidal But that's the point: they ARN'T ignorant about the Koran. They're following an interpretation of it which holds sway over a large chunk of the Muslim world. The extremists are in the spotlight because they're fighting, but their interpretation of Islam is pretty much identical to that in countires like Saudi Arabia and Iran. Now I completely accept that Saudi Arabia and Iran arn't the whole of the Muslim world, but they are HUGELY influential due to their oil wealth. For instance, one of the drivers of radical Islam here in the UK has been radical imams sent to UK mosques by Saudi-funded organisations.
Harold Smith I understand your point. I hate Saudi Arabia and the way they force people to do certain things claiming it's part of Islam, forbidding women from driving cars for instance. Now your claim "interpretation of it which holds sway over a large chunk of the Muslim world"; Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, Dubai, Kuwait etc have massive Muslim populations, yet they don't hold such interpretation. They are a large number and even larger than those in Iran and Saudi Arabia. It might surprise you, but I visited Saudi Arabia a year ago and many of those who I had arguments with detest such false understanding. Their kings or controllers might hold it but that doesn't necessarily mean the people living in the country do so; same in Iran. "they are HUGELY influential due to their oil wealth" This is a fair point. Because of the "oil wealth", your politicians seem to ignore beheading, the bad way in which people treated in the country etc.
Aw man...He didn't really want to hear a word she said. He had his agenda in the way he wanted the interview conducted and did everything to make sure she felt as bullied as possible. I'm a fan of John, but his behavior was abhorrent.
That’s how politics works. He asked her a direct question about her narrative “is there something inherently wrong with Islam”. She dodged the question in every possible way.
I was worried at first that it was for her. But when I listened to the clip I noticed "aha, it's that people are not appreciating the interview style by Jon Stewart here!". She got her points through well eventhough she clearly had an interview with a setup against her. Lots of respect for the way she handled this interview!
I know this is old, but this interview is so badly disrespectful to such an important person that I want him to straight up make a formal apology about it 😂
@@ibntulun9405 no, actually. Read her autobiography “Infidel” and you’ll understand. She has led an extremely difficult and traumatic life, and the book she presents to John is her activism against the traumas she faced and others still are facing. I have been a long time fan of the Daily Show, but he really funked up on this one.
@@tessoleary626 As far as her own autobiography is concerned it’s hard to work out what is fact and what is fiction. She hasn’t always been honest. Her own personal experiences (whatever they are) are the only thing she has any expertise in (other than knowing how to market herself, I’ll give her that). Her own experiences don’t qualify her to talk sweepingly about Islamic history, ‘culture’ or contemporary Middle East issues, anymore than my experience growing up the UK qualifies me automatically to some sort of insight or expertise into Christianity or European history or politics. I don’t need to specifically read ‘Infidel’ or any of her other tabloid-style arresting one-word book titles. I’ve read much of what she’s written including ‘Heretic’ which is the book under discussion here. When I say I’ve read it, I mean seriously read it, carefully, examining every footnote and checking the sources. It’s a catalogue of sweeping statements; factually incorrect statements; bad history; use of dubious sources; highly selective and deliberately misleading use of authoritative sources; it’s not serious stuff. There are plenty of scholars of Islamic history, modern Middle East politics, Arab/Muslim society culture, specialists in gender issues in muslim countries etc and you’d be hard-pushed to find any of them who would take her seriously. But her work does make her a regular fixture on Fox News which is the audience she seems to be more concerned about. You’re welcome to disagree with Jon Stewart’s position but he’s absolutely right to treat Hirsi Ali just like he would any other controversial figure and ask her difficult questions. I thought he was pretty gentle with her frankly. btw, while we are recommending things to read… Max Rodenbeck (Middle East correspondent for The Economist and author of the best history of Cairo bar none - I’ve read the others) wrote quite a detailed and thoughtful review of Heretic for the New York Review .
@@ibntulun9405Ibn, I appreciate your response! I will look into that. Do you have any book recommendations for gender issues and/or history of Islam? I am certainly not against any faith specifically, but I am interested in domestic violence, sexism, and the forces that justify it throughout many cultures. I’m only currently familiar with those subjects in US cultures. I do agree that singular personal experiences do not always speak to an entire culture, but series of personal experiences that many people have can show a pattern. I want to examine these things to better understand and help people, not to condemn or criticize. We live in a world with many different cultures all in contact with one another, and I think the best approach is to seek understanding and compassion. I appreciate you showing me that I have only had this one perspective on the issue. I’d love to learn more and thank you for your response and opportunity to learn and expand my mind!
Anytime someone criticizes Islam people love to say "WhAt AbOuT ChRiStIaNiTy!?" But, it's NEVER the other way around. Think about that. How many times have you heard a critic of Christianity be told: "What about Islam!?" It doenst happen.
You two are the only people acting dumb. People are rightfully outraged by this woman's islamophobia, and even if reformation is needed, most people disagree with the exact approach Ms. Ali is taking. This isn't about liberals' love for islam, and saying that both Islam and Liberals are aiming to destroy western civilization only proves what a narrow-minded fool you are. This is about people not wanting to take the extreme action that Ms. Ali is suggesting. A lot of people would rather preach acceptance as opposed to radically uprooting the Islamic religion. These feelings don't make us dumb, but we just have differing opinions. Calling us dumb just proves what an arrogant moron you are, just saying.
Do you have a life? Or are you just a troll? Both same thing if you ask me, but what a sad, pathetic loser you must be to spend your life trolling under youtube videos
shoya72 You, like so many people, over-use,misuse,abuse the term 'troll". A person is not a 'troll' because you disagree with them or visa versa. Expressing disagreement is NOT 'trolling"
Will Baker Troll may not be the right word, but there is something wrong with a person who feels the need to respond to every comment he/she disagrees with, as well as insulting individuals in every comment.
"Born Ayaan Hirsi Magam, she migrated to the Netherlands in 1992, changed her name to Hirsi Ali, and lied to Dutch authorities about her past. Contrary to the story she told the government, she arrived in the Netherlands not from war-torn Somalia, but from Kenya, where she lived in a secure environment and under the protection of the United Nations, which funded her education at a well-regarded Muslim girls’ school. Though she told immigration authorities and the Dutch public she had fled from civil war in Somalia, she left that country before its war broke out. Indeed, she did not live through a war there or anywhere else. Thanks to her fabrications, Hirsi Ali received political asylum in just five weeks."
A rare case of Jon Stewart showing ignorance. His moral and philosophical compass simply fails him here. He certainly doesn't have the experience or first hand knowledge that Ms. Ali does on this subject. I love Jon usually... It's pretty unfortunate that he hangs on to his ideas rather than trying to take in what Ayaan is saying.
First off, I love Jon. He is a well meaning human. But... Pro Anita Sarkeesian but anti Ali? I don't get. She is an actual feminist, not a con artist. Swap the counter positions and the truth will set you free.
It seems to me that anyone with Muslim sounding name and says "Islam is evil! trust me, I know" seems to get so much love and support. As an atheist, I feel that this is something really common: many Religious people adore these preaching and the media loves to create an "other" to fight against. I love Jon though, for one reason or another his BS meter was going off and he was acting on it. He was truly respectful here and never went in to attack her, yet I see everyone claiming he was being harsh.
latzobear truly an idiot. You can never translate the Qur'an at it's fullest meaning. I bet you only speak English, and want the whole world to learn your language.
"Hirsi Ali told astonished audiences on Dutch talk shows that her supposedly devout family had forced her to marry a draconian Muslim man, that she had not been present at her own wedding, and that her family had threatened to kill her for offending their religious honor. However, Zembla told a drastically different story. Hirsi Ali’s brother, aunt and former husband each testified that she had indeed been present at her wedding. It turned out that Hirsi Ali’s mother had sent her brother to a Christian school, not exactly an indication of Islamic fanaticism." This is the kind of person she is.
..Except that it's carried on by Trevor Noah and gotten worse. Plus it's spawned splinter channels like John Oliver and Samantha Bee's. Stewart was decent, but he has spawned monsters.
After watching the Daily Show religiously I always loved Jon until this episode when I realized how illiberal he really is at heart. I never thought I would see him this way but what a coward, hypocrite and bigot he is to attack such an honorable and courageous women like that. Absolutely disgusting and disappointing. I can't believe I am saying this about someone I have always had so much respect for. This is such a powerful example of Jon's bigotry of low expectations. He would never ever have attacked a Christian or a Jew who was criticizing either of these religions. I will never be able to respect him again.
wow i've never seen this side of jon stewart. i think even the crowd sensed something was off. i'll probably only think of this when his name comes up from now on.
I've been a fan of Jon for years, but this interview made me lose respect for him. I get that he is a media personality and doesn't want to stir any pots before he leaves his show, but it's total BS that he's following what so many other media personalities are doing these days: taking it easy on Islam and acting like an apologist. He kept bringing up Christianity and the past. We don't live in the past; we're here now and in today's world Islam is a threat to so many of us, ESPECIALLY women! What Ayaan says is true and you won't know until you spend a few years in a Muslim society. Just like you won't know the US has so much racism in this day and age, until you live here or follow the news here day-in/day-out. Of course they'll all say "oh read our holy book, it's peaceful"... and that's true of maybe 50% of the versus in that book. But you'll be ignoring the other 50-60% where all infidels deserve to be killed, or where women are half the worth of men, or where if you don't obey this 1400 year-old book you shall be beheaded. C'mon, if Islam was such a peaceful religion, there wouldn't be soooo many groups using it to wage violence. What Ayaan is saying is, let's remove the hateful language from the book, let's banish the barbarian methods of 1400 years ago (they were acceptable back then, but we've come a loooong way as humans since then), and let's turn it into the peaceful religion everyone claims it is!! Then no one will dare use it as a clutch to be violent or for their own personal agenda! So much respect to this courageous woman for standing up for women's rights in the Muslim world, and for having the maturity that with a few adjustments we can reform this religion. But until people like Jon Stewart don't stop acting so f'ing PC, none of these changes will happen quickly enough, and it'll be another 300-500 years (full of violence and war) before Islam, just like the other Abrahamic religions, gets reformed. The reformation is inevitable, and you can take that to the bank!
4:50 She says the Qur'an was written by a man, fair point. Either man, God or the Devil wrote this book. I doubt the Devil did as he would be condemning himself before every chapter is recited, as well as thousands of times throughout the entirety of the Qur'an. So that's ruled out. Man? How was any 7th Century Arab, in particular the Prophet Muhammad (who was illiterate), able to discuss certain scientific 'miracles' without having conducted experiments or proven research? For example, the in depth analysis of embryonic development as discussed in the Qur'an. There are many scientific discoveries made in the Qur'an which have been 'confirmed' in recent times. So I also doubt man could've authored the Qur'an. So then logic would dictate the Creator authored the Qur'an.
It's pretty rough that Reza Aslan gets such a pass during his interviews with Jon Stewart, but Ayaan gets the exact opposite treatment. She raises legitimate fears, and it's a conversation we should absolutely have.
Thumbs down for the disrespectful Jon not the intellect, survivor and true hero Ayaan. Let her speak Jon, she actually knows what the fuck she talking about.
If we could get rid of folks who seek to impose their faith on others, and Vice laws, the world would be a much better place, but then what would the dealers, police, co's, and religious leaders do for a living? Surely they don't want real jobs, where you have to work. Besides what I decide to put in my own body surely isn't my business. Ayaan Hirsi Ali is such a breath of fresh air. She really has a lot of guts to speak about changing Islam publicly. I bet she has a huge price on her head.
One should remember the example of Neville Chamberlain, the Brittish ruler who said that "Hitler was a man of peace". A sentence that was not given out of the dictators benevolence, but rather because Chamberlain was too afraid of the incomming conflict. What Chamberlain managed to do was give Hitler more time and resources to inflict an even more grievous strike on the same Europe Chamberlain was trying to protect.
Why I have such deep respect for Jon, he doesn’t say what the masses want to hear, and he tries his best to stay true to himself, and his moral compass. You were truly someone worthy of respect Jon.
Mostafa Hassan I think he was trying to show her that she’s not taking this stance based on a Principal, but based on ideology that she wants everyone else to adopt.
The woman is great, and her views are informative and factual, and she was articulate and won the discussion hands down in spite of Stuart's obvious bias. What struck me about this interview was the comments because ordinarily the audience is predominantly left-wing socialists all looking to destroy anyone discussing Islam and yet the vast majority of the comments are in favour of her. There is hope !!
Still Islam is the number one growing religion in USA and Europe And mostly women accepting Islam You gotta ask yourself why people choose to pray 5 times, fast 30 days , worship only one creator, follow all the prophets peace be upon them, give mandatory charity to the poor , and women cover themselves.... Why do you think people give up their lazy life to embrace a different way of life. This religion requires sincerity and knowledge It's the creator who guides people to the straight path This woman is wasting her energy and time
After a bit of thought, I understand what he's asking her in this interview. I'm not sure if she understood, because he presented his argument in a muddled way. He's asking does she think Islam to be an inherently evil religion or an inhherently good religion. He's questioning her application of the word 'reformation'. If most people accept the presumption that Christianity is an inherently decent religion, then Lutheranism 'reformed' it away from dominant Catholicism to a more pure and fundamental interpretation, which led to violence between Protestants and Catholics. So he's asking is Islam an inhherently peaceful religion, and the jihadists and extremists 'reformed' it and twisted it to a more pure, fundamental interpretation, which is now bringing about violence and intolerance much the same way Christians did. If she's using the term 'reformation' to make Islam more peaceful, then does she believe Islam to be inherently violent? My answer to Jon Stewart is that if you take a given religion to its pure and fundamental form and it leads to violence, what does that say about the religion? It's only in how people interpret and apply their religion that determines if it's peace-loving or violent.
Even though you wrote this five years ago I would like to point out that if you knew anything about Islam you would know how it is different and yes it is a very violent and horrible religion in the Quran and it is different than the Bible... people regardless of their religion can be evil but their book tells them to be... it does not tell them to love their enemies and pray for them
@@deniseedmondson6236 Where do you get your information from? I invite you to listen to proper intellectual Muslims like Mohammad Hijab. ua-cam.com/video/nTCA8tEuTOI/v-deo.html
@@deniseedmondson6236 you said islam is a very violent and horrible religion and Christianity is different. Any religion can be “horrible” as a subjective opinion, but how do you understand Christianity to be less violent. It seems like you’re taking what you see in the 21st century only and juxtaposing that on 2000 years of Christian history. The word violence needs to be understood and studied throughout cultures and religions. It seems like Ukraine and Russia, two largely Christian majority countries, could possibly be the beginning of world war 3. If America gets involved, another Christian majority country, we could very well see the destruction and complete extinction of mankind. But that’s some how not more violent than Islam, in your opinion. I mean it’s just absurd. I believe the biggest issue you have is failing to see the nuances in human beings when it comes to violence. Violence is a human issue, not an Islamic issue. It has always existed and will continue to exist. If you took all the Muslims off the planet it wouldn’t solve the issue of violence.
Grotesque man. Ayaan is a hero, to all of us. Atheists, Christians, Muslims, Jews, Gays, Whites, Blacks, Etherians.......A beautiful woman who I wish would come settle in the UK and run for Prime Minister.
This interview is amazing and makes me sad to hear Daily Show is ending. Throughout the entire interview it becomes obvious that Hirsi Ali really has no clue what the Reformation was about. Jon knows she hates Islam and isn't interested in reforming or moderating it. This push to reform Islam from outside the religious community will only cause more animosity and resentment. Growing pains are part of the process and they will figure out whats best themselves.
Oh God, this smart woman definitely deserved a better interviewer. Her, together with Waris Dirie (the famous Somali born book author) would have wrecked this guy on stage.
+DarkSideOfLucca Because he actually tried to get her to state her point? She has no point at all. She's been called out for being a fraud multiple times, and Jon gave her plenty of opportunities to get her story together, and she was unable to do it.
Interview can be summarized as:
Ayaan "I'm here to talk about the facts of Islam in the modern world and how we can encourage it being reformed as less violent and more tolerant"
John Stewart - "SO yes, as we were saying about CHRISTIANITY..."
Desperate to feed his dogs
He’s an apologist pandering to political correctness.

@@DerekADempsey ikr??all rhese leftists stand with Palestine, and are against Islamophobic until someone criticizes Ialam then muslims go bonkers and these radical leftists are stabbed in the back
LOVE IT WHEN THAT HAPPENS
Seems like the moment she came onto stage he'd already decided what attitude to give her. May as well have had Ben Affleck behind her yelling "GROSS!" "RACIST"
Some interesting facts about Ayaan Hirsi Ali:
1- She wholeheartedly believes that Israel's PM deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for waging a war on Gaza.
Unknown
"She's a vile, hard-faced, backstabbing, cruel excuse for a human being"
This is quite a claim. Even based on your two 'facts' about her, it's astounding that you've come to that conclusion.
Can you link me to what you have read or seen which made you form this conclusion about her. I need to see it for myself.
Unknown
The quote from the first article is not so insane. I'm sure she could give you reasons why she thinks Netanyahu deseres peace prize. (to be honest, he could wipe clean Palestine whenever he wants)
The second article doesn't seem to prove anything.
(I think this is questionable claim when written on a website called "A voice for men")
Are you sure John Stewart knew about all this before he interviewed her? Why did he let someone who he thought was a liar onto his show, and then go on to plug her book? Seems like mixed messages
I personally thought he was just against her views on Islam.

This is in no way just a Somalian problem. Not even mainly a Somalian problem. It's a world wide muslim problem.

Lady Fatima The vast majority of Muslims in the world are in favor of Islamic jurisprudence, but disagree on small issues. Most factions support stoning homosexuals, adulterers, apostates and "pagans".

Stan Parrish Eхactly..
Stan Parrish "'An eye for an eye' was changed to 'Turn the other cheek.'"
To be fair, such a radical change already existed since the first century as taught by the Son of God (see Matthew 5:38-39).
+Stan Parrish
You are looking at the Reformation as a transformation over the centuries and the development of modern Christianity.
I usually like John Stewart, but shut up. She is talking about Islam not Christianity, glad I'm an atheist.
This lady is a hero!!!
Jon Stewart came off like such a naive fool.
Most people do when they try to argue her.
It's because he is
The World needs more enlightened women like her.
Aw man...He didn't really want to hear a word she said. He had his agenda in the way he wanted the interview conducted and did everything to make sure she felt as bullied as possible. I'm a fan of John, but his behavior was abhorrent.
Thank you for recognizing this. I agree with you.
This is why I am NOT a fan of his
That’s how politics works. He asked her a direct question about her narrative “is there something inherently wrong with Islam”. She dodged the question in every possible way.
good for her, she bullies muslims everyday?
@@codectified how did she dosge it? And let me ask you IS there something inheritly wrong with islam?
This beautiful lady is sooooo intelligent and soooo brave. She's simply Fabulous. Tc Ayaan.
Good job Hirsi Ali. Down-votes are for Jon Stewart.
I actually down voted for hirsi, stewart did what he always does
I was worried at first that it was for her. But when I listened to the clip I noticed "aha, it's that people are not appreciating the interview style by Jon Stewart here!". She got her points through well eventhough she clearly had an interview with a setup against her. Lots of respect for the way she handled this interview!
I know this is old, but this interview is so badly disrespectful to such an important person that I want him to straight up make a formal apology about it 😂
You're joking I take it? 😊
@@ibntulun9405 Do you not know who Ayaan Hirsi Ali is? She's a hero. Jon wasn't respecting that.
Anytime someone criticizes Islam people love to say "WhAt AbOuT ChRiStIaNiTy!?" But, it's NEVER the other way around. Think about that. How many times have you heard a critic of Christianity be told: "What about Islam!?" It doenst happen.
I knew Jon Stewart had dumb fans, but not this dumb wow, comments are shocking.
Appalled ByFurries
western civilization or western imperialism/domination?
Do you have a life? Or are you just a troll? Both same thing if you ask me, but what a sad, pathetic loser you must be to spend your life trolling under youtube videos
shoya72
You, like so many people, over-use,misuse,abuse the term 'troll".
Ayaan is amazing. Jon, crude and disrespectful.
Shows Jon's true intentions to coddle Islam and attack Christianity.
This guy sounds like a fool.
You spelled his name wrong, you fucking idiot.
She is so far beyond Jon's experience that he really has no clue on how to interact with her.
Yea
Did you notice how they edited her answers? Strange. Why would they want her to not be able to speak her peace? Is it because she speaks of peace?
Saddened by Jon's treatment of this campaigner putting her life on the line for a humanitarian cause.
I assume the dislikes are primarily because of jon's annoying behaviour. ayaan was graceful, insightful, articulate, measured and extremely polite.
I do not know what Jon is doing there, in this interview. Ayyan talks sense.
Cognitive dissonance of a white liberal .
Limelightmoon uh no. read the fucking koran you idiot
because you have? in arbic? I highly doubt that.
and no, I have better things to do than entertain a troll
nice diversion. in "arbic" no I haven't read it in arabic and it doesn't matter.
LOL idiot
latzobear truly an idiot. You can never translate the Qur'an at it's fullest meaning. I bet you only speak English, and want the whole world to learn your language.
Freaking GUTS! LOVE HER!
That was such a painful video to watch, so glad this guy no longer has a show.
..Except that it's carried on by Trevor Noah and gotten worse.
She deserves more respect.
I can understand why so many people have disliked this video, and you know what, she is right!
Aayan Hirsi Ali is wonderful!
A lot of the "scientific miracles" in the Quran where either already known, or completely wrong.
Most of them are re interpreted ao they sound right
It's pretty rough that Reza Aslan gets such a pass during his interviews with Jon Stewart, but Ayaan gets the exact opposite treatment. She raises legitimate fears, and it's a conversation we should absolutely have.
He has clearly no idea about the history of Martin Luther and his intentions..
jon stewart we love you .... from kuwait.
John feels so free to criticise Christianity but Ayan can't criticise Islam?
Stop comparing christainity to islam
Thumbs down for the disrespectful Jon not the intellect, survivor and true hero Ayaan. Let her speak Jon, she actually knows what the fuck she talking about.
This is one of the few interviews where I thought Jon was just not going in the right direction. Shame.
Who was the Christian that pissed in Jon's Cheerios?
As a Dutchie I can say this the most brave woman I have ever seen.
Netherlands is a humiliated nation. Your opinion is worthless.
Why I have such deep respect for Jon, he doesn’t say what the masses want to hear, and he tries his best to stay true to himself, and his moral compass.
You were truly someone worthy of respect Jon.
I like him to, but it seems like he was trying so hard to make her say islam is no different than any other religion
Mostafa Hassan I think he was trying to show her that she’s not taking this stance based on a Principal, but based on ideology that she wants everyone else to adopt.
@@AM-bj7yo Yeah. Because not wanting women beheaded for driving is a bad thing...
ويأبى الله الا ان يتم نوره ولو كره الكافرون.
Wow Jon Stewart made a total ass of himself in this interview.
She is too smart for this show.
I hope Jon has read the book since then
The way he acts, It's like he really just wants her to shut about Islam but he can't come right out and say it
It’s simple and she’s a genius. Christians used to stone people for speaking against god, well they stopped, she’s saying the same thing.
Still Islam is the number one growing religion in USA and Europe
And mostly women accepting Islam
You gotta ask yourself why people choose to pray 5 times, fast 30 days , worship only one creator, follow all the prophets peace be upon them, give mandatory charity to the poor , and women cover themselves....
Why do you think people give up their lazy life to embrace a different way of life.
This religion requires sincerity and knowledge
It's the creator who guides people to the straight path
This woman is wasting her energy and time
sad to see an otherwise reasonable person be so dense, (john)

I love this woman. Being a former Muslim myself I can tell you she is 100% accurate. Stop being blind people it's time to wake up!
it doesn't need a reformation, it just needs to go away. we all need to move past religion
You're so right about that. Religion isn't necessary anymore
