Selama tingal lebih dari 10 tahun di Hongkong saya belum pernah ke chungking mansions dengan adanya video ini saya akan datang kesana , sharing yang luar biasa'
Kinda sad how Mutanga and Tess note that in Chungking, they feel welcomed and accepted, not judged. The unspoken part is that elsewhere in Hong Kong, they feel judged and rejected (Tess' comments about not finding work reinforce this). Glad this video shines a bit of a spotlight on how much more flavourful life can be when we welcome people from diverse backgrounds.
people cry so much over africans, you think when chinese people go to africa they are totally accepted everywhere? HA be honest and fair. People like you are funny always talking about race, if people dont like you they dont like you thats life get over it. But its a classic topic now a days. In canada we talk the same about blacks always saying how life is so much harder, canada even declared covid was harder for black people in canada compared to white people LOOOOOOOOL, they are a minority population in most of the countries, be realistic holy smokes, he chooses to go there, if he does not like it there is a big world to live in
it is pretty normal for minorities to be judged and labelled in a foreign country. and in this case, i could imagine that they are judged because some of them are refugees and naturally people associate refugees with crimes because thats how most refugees are able to stay alive in most places in the world and its what they see on the news, and i call this passive racism, that is mostly initiated by unknown, uncertainty and self protection, they become sort of "racism" simply due to protection mechanism of human being. the interesting thing is, in some of the most developed places in the world the problem of racism is more serious because they are active, think about how asian people are considered weak, inferior and are often assaulted on board day light in those countries that love to talk about human right, fairness and democracy.
Neither of them speak Cantonese, no doubt they get rejected. Even mandarin speakers don't have it easy in hong kong. It's the same in America or anywhere else, you don't speak the local language, you're become an outcast.
There is definitely some history here of Hong Kong segregation and racism, but awesome that people can appreciate each others food now! I would love to visit next time I am in HK.
He's lived there his whole life. Why should he not speak Cantonese well? I don't want to attack you, but the view that Indians should not be expected to speak Cantonese well comes from a racist past
Jacky was born in British Hong Kong, grew up, worked and got famous in Hong Kong. Why wouldn't he be fluent in Cantonese? He only sold his soul to China when the communist killed almost all production house in Hong Kong.
@@HugosLeung when over 90% of the population are Chinese and mostly speaks Cantonese while a relatively small portion of the entirety are of other races and most you see on the street are no where near fluent in the language, it's not discrimination but just pattern seen by an average person that causes the appalling reaction who are you to stand out and accuse someone being racist when praise is given to someone who wasn't expected to be fluent in a language to actually be perfect at it ffs it's not even your business
OMG, I used to walk pass by the Chungking Mansion when I stayed in Tsim sha tsui for holiday. I didn’t know there are so many restaurants with different cuisine located there! When I have a chance to be in HK again, I will definitely visit there again
I grew up in HK and because of it feel so proud that I can honestly say I've tried damn near every country's food and experience different cultures. It's an INCREDIBLE place for food and an incredible place in general
I stayed at the Chungking Mansion back in 1980 for a few days after a 2 year stay in Japan, before continuing to Europe. It was a very magical place with its maze of restaurants and shops.
Hello! Once upon a time, it was the Chongqing Mansion that was the threshold for a visit to Hong Kong. In the 90s, when I became a Wang Jiaye fan, a visit to exchange money opened my eyes to the delicious Indian food. Tales from the past and present. A lot has happened and a lot will happen. In any case, I will probably always love Hong Kong in the future. 香港加油!!
Food has impacted my life significantly! I am a second generation American Born Cantonese with no mother and I have spent the majority of life discovering techniques for not just Cantonese cuisine but our world's food diaspora. It is enormous and I have met so many amazing souls along this journey thus far. Thank you Goldthread for providing this space for me and countless others to breathe in our roots and feast our senses within a different side of HK. Cheers - BluwitaU P.S. I LOVE Spicy food 🩴🎲
I love CKM aka Curry Haven. Indian food can be varied and have had many there. Of course curry and Naan bread. Never had Ghanian food and would like to try. Thank you enjoyed your vlog.
Thanks for covering Chungking Mansions. I chose not to stay at the hostels housed inside as many online reviews said accessing the elevators would take time. But I loved finding out how there were so many Indian / South Asian and African restaurants inside. Is Jacky's restaurant called Moti Mahal? It would be nice if you had a graphic with location details like floor and store number. His food looked better than the microwaved mediocrity I had at one of the other Indian eateries there :/ (this was back in 2012)
Ill never ever forget the butter chicken curry from Chunking Mansion! Stayed in the hostel above, felt claustrophobic and sketchy as but absolutely memorable vibes..
Have you ever been to Chungking Mansions?👀
nope ! but would really love to visit one day when im traveling back to HK for visiting :D. Cant wait to see this place.
yes and my cantonese friend tried to give me food poisoning and it didnt work!
Nope.. looks dirty and the front entrance smells like pits.
Yeah for the prostitutes

Holy ....Jacky is 100% Hongkonger ..
Need more Jackies, less McBno cockroaches
I was very impressed.

Yah, China is known for having a bit of a racism problem.
it is pretty normal for minorities to be judged and labelled in a foreign country. and in this case, i could imagine that they are judged because some of them are refugees and naturally people associate refugees with crimes because thats how most refugees are able to stay alive in most places in the world and its what they see on the news, and i call this passive racism, that is mostly initiated by unknown, uncertainty and self protection, they become sort of "racism" simply due to protection mechanism of human being. the interesting thing is, in some of the most developed places in the world the problem of racism is more serious because they are active, think about how asian people are considered weak, inferior and are often assaulted on board day light in those countries that love to talk about human right, fairness and democracy.

Awesome! Chung King mansion is a prime example of how easy people can make a living in Hong Kong. What's more is everybody is accepted here 😁
There is definitely some history here of Hong Kong segregation and racism, but awesome that people can appreciate each others food now! I would love to visit next time I am in HK.
I was there this week, had a nice conversation with Tess, also went to moti palace , a great place for Indian food.
This is one of your best videos, @Goldthread. You all bring the flavors! 🔥
What a beautiful place to stay with family and friends for
I am very impressed by Jacky's Cantonese! He speaks better than I do!
Some would say... this remark is prejudice and borderline racism
He's lived there his whole life. Why should he not speak Cantonese well? I don't want to attack you, but the view that Indians should not be expected to speak Cantonese well comes from a racist past
When HK was established by the British, Indians were part of the founding groups.

Wahhh! Jacky’s Cantonese is amazing! The fact that he considers Hong Kong as his home is so heartwarming!
Lol stop being patronizing, guys. You too would be fluent in anything if you were to learn and use it for FIFTY years.
Not surprising. He grew in HK.
Hong kong food is definitely up there. So much variety.

at 5:04 the sign says Moti Palace, so I guess it IS Moti Mahal?
