People often name other cities in China as well as Tokyo, Japan as "cyberpunk cities" but Hong Kong is the original "cyberpunk" city. Cyberpunk aesthetic is based heavily on Hong Kong, like the old vs new, the narrow walkways, the neon signs, the multiethnic people, the seedy nature, the tall apartment buildings and so on. I feel Chungking Mansions is very representative of that multiethnic, seedy and old vs new aesthetic that is common in Cyberpunk as is the whole of Hong Kong. It's a very interesting and unique city and watching this video makes me miss it.
agree! Hong Kong is OG cyberpunk, even more so when the neon lights were all over the place. Now its slowly being "sanitised" but its cyberpunk vibes are still imprinted in some areas.
The location of Chungking Mansion is good! There are many guesthouses/hostels inside. The room prices are usually quite low (You pay what you get). Sometimes people are scared to stay at Chungking Mansion. However, some business people run other youth hostels with dorms and so-called private rooms inside other mansions (e.g. in Wanchai (on Hong Kong Island), Jordan and Yau Ma Tei are much more horrible (terrible facilities shared by many people) and expensive.
I just stayed at Chungking Mansion for 4 nights the other week. It's not as dirty or malicious as it sounds. I bought some bread at the grocery store on the first floor and ate it, and it was a great experience. Also, the basement was surprisingly modern and futuristic. From Tokyo Japan.
@@walkinginhongkong lol I did I got lost twice. At night swarms of fearless rats. Couldn't skid them off . They just kept on eating I had to jump over them. I hope u didn't leave food lying round because the climb in thru the windows lol but over all. I loved it there . Do you have a recommended restaurant or cafe near Changking Mansion? I'll visit Hong Kong soon and stay in this area. However, my arrival time will be at night. Since I am a solo traveler, I do not have more time to explore the area on my first day, so I'm looking for a good place in Chungking Mansion where I can dine and relax before I head to my hotel. Thank you.
Hello. Generally there are a lot of options within the area to dine and relax when you arrive. You can try the restaurants within chungking mansions, most of which close quite late like 10 or 11pm. You can also try Isquare mall (across chungking mansions) or K11 art mall (near exit N1/N2). There are also numerous cafe shops within the area like startbucks, urban coffee roaster ect. I suggest you walk around the area to see where you want to stay. Goodluck! 😊
you have good taste im movies sir. Chungking mansion is a classic and celebrating its 30th anniversary this year thus it was screened again last month :)
hands down the finest Indian food ever , must have been 40 years ago. Restaurant had pics of just about every celeb in the world eating there .Place would have burned down in seconds..... very very dangerous building then
