- A series of videos showing how I disassembled and overhauled the manual gearbox for my Suzuki Vitara. It's not as complicated as you would imagine, but does require a few special tools and a lot of patience.

Very Good Tutorial and very straight forward! Now it’s time to tackle my own 99 Grand Vitara VIT 5 transmission as it has noisy bearings. Well done! And thank you for posting this.
You're a hero! Never have I seen a video that shows all the parts in detail with good explanation. This video makes me feel a lot more comfortable to overhaul the transmission of my Vitara.
Generally good flow but I would show the physical steps of the pulling and pressing of the most difficult components.
Thanks for the video! I had this work done by a shop as I didn't have time to do it myself. I was put off by the work needed to drop the transmission, which is unfortunate because the internal components seem straightforward to work on. I wish I had been able to inspect everything myself, they were not able to get the needle bearings for inside the gears, which I would have liked to source myself. This helped me understand what is going on inside though, so thank you!!
Great quality video. lots of good info and saved me a ton on time. Thanks for the post.

Very interesting video, thanks for posting it (quite some time ago!). I'm tidying up an old Suzuki Escudo in New Zealand and this will be of great help. Thanks again.
Thanks for the comment mate, good luck with the project. They are lovely cars.
Thank you very much for the video. Rebuilding mine tomorrow. I feel much better about it after watching this.
Alan Behnke Good luck, work slow and methodical with lots of pictures.
Good video. You took a lot of time to film and share your knowledge. Respect!
Great video, thanks!!
Thank you very much! It is a very helpful video!
Thank you very much for uploading this video... helped a lot. Just made my first gearbox using this video. car was 1,6 16V vitara. But gearbox is same.
Mikko Huhtasaari Fantastic mate, glad it helped!
Very useful thanks
Very helpful, thanks! I have the same issue with the Getrag 260 in my 1986 BMW and plan to replace bearings and needle roller.
update I just used a vice and was able to press it out. couldn't have done this as quick without your video thanks
+Shane Douglas Awesome mate, hope it all goes nice and smooth for you.
am.interested how can I get this job am good in that
Thank you for your video, it is very helpful and we'll done.
+Steven Howell Thank you for taking the time to leave a positive comment, good luck with your project.
Great educational video.
obviously you know what you doing! thanks for the video!!
Not really man, but most things can be tackled if you have a few tools and a bit of patience. Just take it slow, get lots of pictures and do things one step at a time.
Great video. Thank you!
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment :)
great video..good job man!
Appreciate the comment mate, good luck with your project.
I love suzuki, Puerto Rico
I have the same suzuki same trany and when it reaches normal temperature, sounds like a diesel engine and loses power , the engine was rebuilt a few months ago .... do you think is a transmission problem?
Probably not the transmission, if it starts sounding like a diesel, then the engine may be pre-igniting the fuel, meaning you probably have a timing problem. Very very bad for the engine. This is also called pinging.
I took the car back to the shop and they opened the engine and found nothing wrong with the engine ... is a headache thanks for your help!
Take it to another mechanic and let him have a listen, if it is pinging, it will be very easy to hear. Pinging also usually increases when you are loading the engine, like going up a steep hill in a high gear. Best to get a second opinion.
Great , job ,
*BEAUTIFUL WORK. THANK YOU FOR SHARING.*
Hay thanx for the video; was wondering my car was making such a noise. Feels bad thats not the reasone I'm removing my gear box, gear box is stuck in 4th and won't come out, this video will be of much use to me when disassembling my gear box to see whats wrong
Good luck mate, go slow and get lots of pictures.
how do I remove the input shaft bearing its holding up my entire rebuild
thanks bro, good video and i subbed haha
Thanks for the comment, good luck with your project!
You do superb work! Thank you for the video :)
You had to use a gear puller to get the 3 bearings off the shaft. So how did you install the new bearings on the shaft? It seems the new bearings would require an equal amount of pressure to get them in place.
Correct, I used a high lift jack to fashion a press using some bits of cleaned up tube that pressed on the inner race of the bearings.
It's a good idea to change the throwout bearing and the clutch slave cylinder while you're in there.
Absolutely, I replaced the throwout bearing (not shown), didn't bother with the slave cylinder as there were no leaks and rubber in good condition.
We have desmatlied a gear box and we have sight difficult in fitting the gear shifter inside the gear box
You da man
nice
interesting video . I'm from Russia, and now the same car under repair
Good luck, I still my old Vitara sometimes, they are great old cars.
aunque no puedo ingles pero al ver físicamente es muy pero muy ilustrativos
No hay problema, gracias por el comentario. Buena suerte con su reparación!
>Great Video, one question this 4x4 suzuki manual transmision is the same in the Grand Vitara 2002 2.0 liter, (Tracker)?
+cristian aldana Callejas From the comments on this video, it sounds like they are all pretty similar. I think they probably changed when Suzuki started making the AWD, but yours will probably be reasonably similar.
My Grand vitara sale in Venezuela (Tracker) have a 5 speed 4x4 manual transmission, and it work great but have a noise in all gears except 4th gear. maybe fail only inside needle bearing and outside bearing of main shaft? thanks for your oppinions and time, sorry my bad english
cristian aldana Callejas Yep, that is very normal for Vitara gearboxes, 4th gear is 1:1 ratio, so no side-load on any gears in the gearbox, that is why it is quieter. Mine was quieter after the work in this video, but not quiet like new. If you feel like a challenge, you can overhaul it, but it is not likely to die on you, only get louder with age.
Thanks you! Yes it start made a small noise 3 year ago..,i chance oil but is the samemonth a week increase
Month a month increase the noise, i have all bearings, seals and rings to rebuild mine soon.
excellent video its a great idea to video the pulldown as if you foreget someyhing you can view the video great job you are an engineer though and that a big step up from the average mechanic
Appreciate the kind words. Love those kayak fishing videos! Actually spent the day out fishing from the kayak yesterday!
Hi hello vitara and sidekick are the same input shaft also dsame no. Of gear teerh and spline
Great video man! I was thinking about changing the bearings in my transmission, but after seeing this I'm not pretty sure that this is my problem. It's weird, cause mine only makes noise in 4th and 2nd. Do you have any ideia of whta could be wrong with mine?
Hi Felipe, thank you for the comment! Unfortunately I have no idea what could be the problem with yours, very unusual for them to be noisy in 4th and 2nd! Good luck if you decide to take it on, just work slowly and methodically and take lots of pictures!
You won't believe how simple the problem was, LOL! I started to disasemble the shift levers to take everything down, but then I noticed the boot no.2 was torn in the front part, allowing some noise to be heard when the lever was in 2nd and 4th positions. Well, I won't need to take everything apart this time! Thank you anyway, because after watching your video I got confident enough to start doing the job and, after all, I was able to find out this little problem.
Awesome result Felipe! Yes, those gearboxes are actually very reliable, so it is not worth opening it unless there is a big problem! Good job man!
I need Tata safari 2.2vtt dicor gear box refitting video
A Sport with a V6 in it! I'm a jealous US owner with the 1.8L oddball engine xD
That is quite an odd one! Over here we have the 2L and 2.5L V6 (a Mazda sourced engine) and the 1.6L 4-cylinder suzuki engines.
can any one tell if the mazda b2200 pickup can work an the nissan ka24 engine
Botton Shaft is called a cluster shaft.
Thanks, I can't quite remember what I called the various parts, good chance that I just made up correct sounding names. At least it all went back together and worked well in the end
Nice video indeed. Sent my kzte 4x4 box for recon and the guy just swopped it for a box that was in worse condition. So now I have to recon myself or buy a new one.
Did you use a rebuild kit, or purchase individual bearings?
Got a list of bearing sizes/specs or serial numbers?
Hi there, for this one I just purchased the individual bearings, I think I could get pretty much all of them from a standard bearing supplier.
well explained
Having trouble removing the exhaust no 1 pipe. How did you get the lock washers off that connect to the exhaust manifold?
Triikor It was a few years ago now, but I can't remember any specific difficulty removing any of the exhaust bits. From memory I just did the old trick of soaking all the exhaust bolts and nuts with CRC for a few hours, everything came apart with relative ease.
Damn, Just bought a replacement transmission for my v6 escudo. The input shaft has a bit of play like in this video. Guess these wreckers ripped me off not sure if I should even bother putting it in.
Triikor Hi Trikkor, the far end of the input shaft goes into a bearing on the flywheel, so it's normal for there to be a bit of play there. The box from the wrecker will probably be fine, unfortunately it's hard to see how noisy it is before getting it running. Remember to fill only with oil type and viscosity specified in user manual.
Thanks for the reply, was really not expecting it as the video is 2 years old.
I'll give this transmission a go and hope for the best. Don't have a user manual no luck finding one on the internet either. But I believe the 2.0 V6 Vitara is the same as mine with a different name so should be able to find one.
@@DnosSFS Hey, I just bought a Tracker Transmission with 90k miles on it, but it also has about the same amount of play with the input shaft. New input shaft bearing or is it somewhat normal? Did you put your transmission in like it was?
it's not called a sideshaft but a layshaft
Thanks, my terms were a bit fast and loose! Am a electronics guy really.
can you change/replace the gears for a lower ratio gear?
Dude are you from SA?
sure am, but have been in NZ for 16 years.
You have an South African accent?
Yep, but have lived in New Zealand for a couple of decades.
Nice.

Good video but anyone who doesn't know how to remove a gearbox has no place rehauling it
