    I love stage 2 clutches.
    Had a 91' civic with one.
    It drove like a DREAM.
    But I had the disengagement set all the way down so you had to press the clutch in almost all the way. I prefer this way.

    If you put new bearings and gears and same price or a bit more than I remanufactured transmission. I'd stick with doing it myself. At least you know what's in it and you know it's done right. Plus you would just have to disassemble the reman one to put in the limited slip differential.

      I agree with Brad. plus putting in beefier gears sounds like a solid idea. who knows how much power vw engineers originaly specced these for

    The wear on gear synchro teethis usually due to the synchroniser to hub mating surface (the tapered area between the synchro and gear) becoming worn and glazed. The gear may be able to be dressed up but the synchro should be replaced as it is a high wear component on a car that is driven hard, also be sure to lap the synchro on to the gear using some fine(ish) lapping paste and rough it up slightly. As a rule of thumb, after lapping a synchro to a gear and then cleaning it all up, you should be able to engage the synchro to the gear (dry) and pick the gear up just using the interference in the taper between the gear and synchro. Makes for sharper and positive engagement.

      Exactly - This wasn't even a teardown and inspection. Just a discussion about transmissions with a few video clips. If aren't showing a 360-degree of a gear, it's not a teardown.

    You, are a brave man. Transmissions scare me to no end. They are like engine rebuilds in the sense that soon as you get started, your wallet starts making the toilet flushing sound. LOL! I am dying to see the video of you getting down into the rebuild.

      Its all about taking your time and following the manual. I've done some for $200 cost buying the master overhaul kit and the book for the job. The ones that really suck are the ones that are a pain to R&I when issues happen and you have to go for round two.

    • @harrynazarian3184
      @harrynazarian3184 6 років тому +1

      Yeah, that's what pretty much what scares me: round two because a synchro was not installed correctly, or I left something not torqued, etc. I can play on Audi engines all day, but for whatever reason, transmissions, I stay away. I give MAD props to our Humble Mechanic here. I am dying to see his tear down and rebuild.

      Harry Nazarian I've only ever done a 5spd manual rwd. But what you learn real fast is is the discipline to do every single step perfectly and in order and if you're not sure stop and find out no matter what it takes. If you don't you WILL do it over, assuming there's anything left to work with.

    Heya Charles. I just finished doing this. Installed a Wavetrac in a 02J. The oven/freezer method works great for installing the ring gear and bearings onto the diff. Had to have a machine shop press on the 5th gear syncro hub though, so go get your press :-) You should show/explain how to measure preload when you install your diff. Thanks again for all the great videos!

    I’ve driven a lot of VW’s (Mk1-Mk3) that had a “scratchy “ 2nd gear.. my own Caddy pickup as well until I fitted a brand new ‘box from VW.. Personal opinion is use what you have and replace what needs replacing now, not later.

    That 2nd gear still looks good man, don’t worry. If you had no shifting issues before with that nasty fluid you I’ll be fine. The “dogs” on 2nd still have a nice defined point, issues arise when they get hammered down to being rounded or having burs. Install the LSD, set preload, and send it....

    • @rogeronslow1498

      That synchro and dog teeth are fine. Unless you have a problem with it going into 2nd gear there's no problem.

  • @n4th145
    @n4th145 6 років тому +1

    I have a MK3 golf gti 16v that grinds going into 2nd gear at high rpm when you shift fast, but if you're gentle it usually doesn't grind.
    My question is would a slipping clutch cause this issue? As mine is starting to slip, but I'm guessing it is most likely second gear synchro. Also I'm guessing the tranny oil hasn't been changed in a long time as the filler bolt is seized solid.
    Appreciate any replies, thanks.

    It looked as if your synchro was worn out on your 1st / 2nd gear. There's normally a gap of something like a millimeter or two it should necessarily ride all the way up the cone

    I got new gearbox, well used one, for my MK3 Jetta, reverse gear was making disgusting grinding noise (it even had some teeth missing) and 2nd and 3rd were sometimes impossible to shift into, i had to ram the stick couple of times before it went into gear.. Freakin' nightmare when it happens while overtaking someone LOL. Got it for a bit more over $70, put new fluid in it, not a single issue since then, oh and new clutch, bearing and push rod, basically clutch assembly was falling apart when i bought the car.

    Sooooooo... I know this might be asking for a lot but any chance you can get your hands on a 01P transmission and tear that thing apart. I have an 01 EV and I recently got the transmission built. It's known to be the Achilles's heal of the EV. I'd love for EV fans to know what are the typical points of failure for these. I know it's a long shot... Either way, I really enjoy your vids and always look forward to the next one. Keep up the excellent work! And wrench on!

    I have an '07 rabbit 2.5 with the 5 spd JCT code transmission. Something broke internally which caused a hole in the case. The research i have done suggests this is a common problem, but i have not been able to find any videos or pictures showing the problem or how to fix. I am wondering if you have any experience or videos with such a problem/solution on how to fix and prevent in the future.

    I’m having problems where when it shifts to 4th, it will jump and jerk back to 3rd a few times and will go to safe mode and just stay in 3rd. Would this be the mechatronices/solenoid issues or the transmission synchronizer?

    Being an ex-trans tech, I'd look for some sort of upgrade from that multi piece synchro on 2nd gear. If you can find someone that replaces that with a "standard type?" one piece synchro, I'd think it would be more robust as long as you can have the same drive-ability out of the thing of course.

      It drives super nice and the Wavtrac diff is amazing. The warranty on the Wavtrac is about unbeatable! See my vid here: ua-cam.com/video/obxUNWcqMZE/v-deo.html
      I purchased the gear set from www.eurospecsport.com and the Wavtrac came from www.autotechdriveline.com. The stock gears will handle 300 WHP all day long though. You'll save much time and money going to the u-pull it yard and yanking a working 02j out. The gears in your vid actually look pretty good. The chewed up sync tooth ring deal ( I forgot what its called) can be pressed off the actual gear and replaced. If you want some longevity out of your stock gears you can have them cryogenically treated. Either www.brokevw.com or www.vwtransaxles.com offers that service, I forget which. Both sites are VW transaxle information GOLD though. Check them out anyway you'll be impressed.

      Just got the last part to start going back together with it. Opted not to replace the gears, but to replace the synchros.

    Every FWD car should have an LSD tbh... They all (the ones I’ve driven around an autocross course anyway) have trouble off of corners with spinning the outside wheel lol

    If you decide; to go through the whole trans yourself, you might look into the trans repair kits, by Luk called the "LuK GearBOX", more more info check the Schaeffler REPXPERT
    site. They come with everything you need; to refresh the trans and even have a instruction kit with it. I wish they would have had these; when I rebuilt my 02M, in that case, I had to get everything from the VW dealer and I can only assume, it would have been more cost effective, to get the repair kit through LUK. Google: "7239 LuK GearBOX VW02J"; for the .pdf repair manual and kit info. They have a video on youtube; showing them go through a 02T trans; which I thought was pretty cool, "LuK GearBOX repair solution for VW 02T transmission". You might need to contact Luk USA; to see who could sell you these kits, as they seem to be shown on their european based sites (Germany, UK). I think it would be cool; if you would connect with large european oem's like LUK and have some videos with them, showing their manufacturing, engineering and parts offerings, for the VW/Audi aftermarket industry and enthusiasts, like us, who have to keep fixing our broken cars! :)

    Great Video! Excuse me for butting in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you ever tried - Tarbbatigan Cars Rehabilitation Tip (google it)? It is a great one off guide for learning how to repair your car the easy way minus the normal expense. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my GF at last got cool results with it.

    good channel and enjoy the content but had to stop after 41 seconds .I can't take hearing the word "issues " that many
    times in a row. The ratio of issues to other words is too high!They are called problems .A word that everyone seems to have a problem remembering nowadays.Let's debate the issues and solve the problems.
    Now let me tell you about the word awesome......never mind.

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  6 років тому

      Okay... you must do what you feel is right... For those wondering the "issue" count at the 41 second mark was 3. ;)
