Drag & Drafting | [NASCAR] Science of Speed

- Engine power is constrained at superspeedways like Daytona and Talladega, so teams use aerodynamics to gain an advantage. Teams adjust their cars to minimize drag, but then it's up to the drivers to find 'the draft' and to trust the drivers behind them to literally "bump" them into Victory Lane.
Exactly 10 years later from being published and still very interesting! Well done to those who made it 👍
"Dale could SEE the air" - ha! love it.
I think they just meant that he saw his son, "Dale could SEE the heir"
iamamish no, it is actually believed that dale sr. Was so good at superspeedways because ha could see the air coming off of the other cars and used it to time his passes perfectly
Well first of all Dale said himself multiple times. Dale told a group of us at Daytona in 1999 “I can see the air in my head, but only because I’ve been in the wind tunnel when smoke was released and I burned that image into my mind” btw most animations are incorrect I spent a ton of time in wind tunnel. My cars always had a “V” that shape. The fender flares created a strange flow on the back of the car the last 1’ on each side.
11 years ago and I’m still here for it! Great video.
2:51 "Y'know to be at 200 miles an hour with 43 guys and you're just beating each other..."
I just came back 11 years later to say ayyooo pause.
Man, I love to see the cars bump drafting.
Dale sr liked to feel the air and could tell off that. That's why he stayed with the half face and would sometimes lean towards the window
I got curious of this because of what Cruz Ramirez did with Jackson Storm.
@pierrelcane5525 - That is hilarious!!!!!!! I am here to show my son how drafting works because he’s watching _Cars_ and they’re at the Piston Cup section, I was telling him Chick Hicks was drafting on The King. He didn’t know what it was, so I hit up YT looking for something to give him a visual and ended up here. Your comment made me laugh! 😜
This video should be on school's classroom. The kid would easily understand drafting with this video
The state patrol calls it following to closely and they give you a breathalyzer test.
I learned from NFS Carbon
Shake and bake
Most informative video i can think of this month.
I am on the full shikamaru mood learning about DRAG, i mean doing this thing it self is a drag, oh man what a drag!
That was actually really well made!
This was awesome and super informative. Thank you
Anyone remember fox or ESPN doing the “The story of the draft “ that was pretty cool
All Earnhardt saw was victory lane.
Looks like unexpected sudden spontaneous beautiful teamwork... until the guy behind decides it's time to pass and bumps hard to make the guy in front spin out.
Thunder Alley racing board game allows to draft.
good video
Rip Dale
I like to drive and to drive fast in mah nascarrrr
So basically drafting works because the racer from behind uses the racer from the front as a sheild for the wind so that the car doesn’t consume as much fuel and so that it can stay fast.
I love drafting
This is why I hate when people bump draft, if you "bump" the car hard enough it WILL spin out, and if you spin me out in forza I'm coming after you.
The word "hate" is much overused these days.
But In Nascar it’s different
Yamil Montes ooh you sound real scary big boy 😘
Well if said person knows what they're doing they will let off the gas just before they hit the car and then get back into the gas to go faster.
Yeah, but these guys are pros. Not people playing on forza. lol They understand how to do it without doing it too hard.
Thats right boys, race science is makin' a comeback! 🏎️🧪🏁 Nascar is the ONLY race that matters, yeehaw! 🤠
Shake and bake time
I am here because of real racing 3
So if there are multiple cars drafting, say 3, which car is using more energy (gas) and which is using less?
The one in the very front.
damon jackson the cars at the front experience drag but the last car can also experience some drag
If we use your example of 3 cars, the front car experiences front drag (front bumper air resistance), the rear car experiences rear drag (rear bumper air resistance) and the car in the middle has the least amount of drag because it has neither front nor rear drag. All 3 cars, however, will go faster because the middle car can bump draft the first car and the rear car can bump draft the middle car.
It sounds complicated but just imagine a tandem bike. Not sure if you've ever ridden a tandem bicycle but the 2 people on the bike have to peddle with less power than one person on a singular bike for the same amount of speed because there are 2 people on one singular bike with 2 wheels against 1 person on one singular bike with 2 wheels.
The same thing happens in Nascar. When cars draft, they become like one car with multiple engines. When a line of 10 cars all draft in a single line, they are upwards of 5mph faster than any singular car or just a couple or a few cars drafting.
Benjiizus the middle uses what, less or more?
The more cars pushing the harder it is to stay in line especially with the rules package now. Most likely if you are bump drafting 3+ cars one of the cars will wind up getting turned.
A little like number cars but it a race track at 203 mph
drafting more like tailgating
