  • The video shows a repair for a knocking noise when accelerating in a turn. The repair involved replacing the CV axle (half-shaft). During the repair it was noticed that the lower control arm also needed to be replaced. The video shows both repairs.

I need to change my 09 cobalt cv axle on driver side. I have horrible shaking when braking and with acceleration. I have replaced the front pads/rotors, balanced/rotate wheels, and replaced the intermediate steering shaft. I still have the shaking/rattle. which cv axle part did you use? I did some searching, most places are selling rebuilt CV axles, and I'm weary of using them.

I don't remember exactly. I think it was probably an off the shelf one from O' Reilly's Auto Parts.

I changed the lower control arm on the driver side of my Pontiac G5, It is when I tried to do the passenger side, That I ran into serious issues! The bolt is seized! I don't know if it is seized in the bushing, or the nut? The driver side came loose & unscrewed about 1/4 or 1/8th of an inch at which point, the bushing started to depress the frame pocket & I knew that the threads were not seized within the nut & the metal bushing needed cut out! However, On the passenger side, When I tried to turn the bolt, It snapped my breaker bar (Snap-on breaker bar) WHICH TELLS ME THAT, IT HAS TO BE STUCK IN THE THREADS OF THE NUT..... RIGHT??? Without access because of the strut, knuckle, axle, sway bar, I cannot really get access so, The plan is, To remove everything!!! The sway bar will still be in the way & that is a major problem! I need to cut away the wall that is blocking access to the nut! I watched your video to see, If the transmission would spew transmission fluid upon removing the axle, like some ford's? I now see that your rear control arm bolt came out easy peezy! Your very lucky!!!! Mine is seized & will nut budge at all! Snapped my breaker bar!!! It seemed like it budged & creaked once & gave just a bit then the breaker bar broke on the next pull!

I do have a video about the bolt getting stuck. Mine was the bushing seized to the bolt, not the nut seized to the bolt. There are some comments on that video that may help some. The video is called 2009 Chevy Cobalt lower control arm rear bolt stuck. In those comments I referenced another video that has some relevant comments. I quote that comment here,"there was another person that commented, saying he had broken the bolt while trying to remove it. He had to cut the nut cage with a Dremel and fish the nut and the rest of the bolt out of there. That conversation is on my video called "Removal and Installation of 2009 Chevy Cobalt Lower Control Arm." His screen name is Cy Hazlett."

How would you get the axle all the way in when its stuck wont come out or go all the way in its a new CV axle

If you look at 13:37 to 14:00 in the video, I show the condition of what it should be like when you have it in correctly. It should not go in any more and it should not come out. There is just a little snap ring on the shaft that snaps into a groove on the inside that keeps it from moving in or out. The spline on the shaft does all the work, all the snap ring does is keep it in the right position along the length of the axle. Sounds like what you are describing is a correctly installed axle. Hope that helps.

Im having trouble taking off thr cv axle, did you just pop it off with your hands?

    • @diywithdave3186

No, I wasn't able to get it with just pulling it off. I used a 90 degree pry bar (the kind used for pulling nails) between the transmission and the cv bearing housing to pop it out.

That was not mentioned in the service procedure that I looked at. It might help, I am not sure about that.
