I can’t believe those Australian scientists fished this game out of an Applebee’s toilet in ‘97 and had to reconstruct this cartridge using Vatican exorcism rituals and Todd Howard’s private Skyrim collection to get this game working again. Truly a treasure.
Your creativity is something to be envious of. Cherish that.
What I'm about to do has not been approved by the Vatican.
I was going over newsgroup posts from the late '90s a while back and found a message from Todd himself hawking Redguard on a thread posted by someone wondering whether they should get FF7 or Daggerfall
Yes this is may very well be the true story. However you have to remember the most popular rumored story of the late 90s. The most famous rumor going around was that in 1998 a nickelback cover band was on tour in San Francisco, and they were performing nickelbacks "photograph" years ahead in secret at a Hilton hotel for 300 people on the rooftops. After the song, a supposed fan of theirs left a note describing how they shat their pants just the other night. It explained how they had to wash their underwear 4 different times. However, it doesnt stop there. This fan of theirs found something strange. Skid marks in their Calvin Klein undergarments. But this couldn't be possible, they pressure washed those underwear 4 times. It's believed that Miyamoto was staying in that very hotel. Problem with that is that nobody has any camera footage of him on that night. It's believed that he was working on a second mario 64 for the n64dd at the time. He accidentally left a bag containing some peculiar items. One of these items was a pair of unwashed pajama pants with butterflies and chocolate bars on it. There was a hole in the crotch area, as his massive 15 incher busted that hole according to sources I can't mention for personal reasons. This story is believed to be true by all the members of the band, and the skid stained underwear were never the same again.... believe what u will but im gonna sleep with 1 eye open for the rest of my life.
@Stan Brule I remember hearing about that in 1992
Having found all 143 stars (at the time) and then finding 2 more that weren't known about after that, I can safely confirm that this game is absolutely as confusing as it looks.

The stanley parable narrator rant moment
Fun fact, the funhouse level Vinny enters at 29:42 is actually from the beta leaks.
I've looked up more footage of this game and from what I can tell, it's entirely just a huge, incomprehensible maze of areas that you slowly learn how to navigate. A lot of them have some really nice ambiance too, with this familiar but distant feeling that keeps you kind of intrigued and wanting to know more.
It's very Yume Nikki-esque, but with more game-like challenges than that game.
Bro, EXACTLY like Yume Nikki going by that description

This is exactly like the copy of Mario 64 that I found in the abandoned cabin on March 31st, 2003. Nintendo knocked down my front door and confiscated it before I could get all the stolen power stars.
I had a similar experience, but Mario himself came out of the tv and bashed my knees in, then stole all of my possessions.
@@tropicanabussy6112 was he drinking milk?
I found this copy up my ass one day when I pushed the giant bowser themed butt plug out one evening and then Sakurai calmly entered my bedroom and told me that I didn't need that and I should give it back to him. I just gave it back to him because I was tired and didn't want to argue. As for the cartridge it didn't work when I put it in the console so I threw it away.

@@j-rex229 thanks man that's high praise
the text boxes in this are so fucking great! they strike that perfect balance between broken but fluent english! it really sells it that this is a beta build not sent to localizers! clever work on the creator's part, it adds to the atmosphere greatly.
The creator did such a good job at making this that it genuinely makes me feel like I’m dreaming while watching this. It just feels so slightly off and non-sensical that it’s actually makes me feel like it’s cursed
Yeah, and the textboxes appearing in weird places too, like the castle one appearing in Pleasant, Pleasant Falls or the bob-omb saying what a sign should be saying in Wet-Dry Town
I legitimately thought this was an old leaked SM64 build until the spooky alternate castle the first time Vinny died.
The title screen music: minor key edition didn't tip you off?
Somewhere else, there's is a copy of beta Mario 64 and boy i want to see it
Unfortunately probably will never see the light of the day
After the whole thing with the sm64 iceberg, the Luigi discovery, and the community sharing their dreams about levels that didn't exist, I will forever love and appreciate unsettling sm64 stuff.
Something about this game, man...
Probably the nostalgia + confusing geometry of the levels + the textures being jogs + and the fact that the thing is just too old already + settings, the game isn't spooky, but the settings sometimes are a bit unsettling
Mario 64 ended up being more scary and weird than other games, even the ones who are supposed to be scary and weird
Don’t get bitten by sigma ok
where can i find examples of the dreams people shared? that sounds super interesting

Don't think even N64 prototypes existed then
Regarding the whole "it's always three Goombas" thing, it's the way Super Mario 64 is designed. When creating levels, there is no "spawn a single goomba here" marker/command, they only implemented "spawn a trio here".
There is ONE place where you'll see two goombas without their third in SM64, but the third technically spawns outside of bounds and so the player has a very hard time seeing them.
You can place single goombas, bob omb battlefield does it. But yeah there is a trio spawner so it's a convenient way to add them in.
Watched the Boundary Break didn't you lol
@@jonisvase5213 I was a OG Sm64 hacker from the toad's tool 64 days.
the 9 pixel mystery goomba
This video is an hour long, im 54 minutes in and vinny said "there's always 3 goombas" right when I read this comment
I like this because it resembles somewhat what Super Mario 64 would be like in a nightmare. Or at the very least a "weird, unpleasant dream." I've had a number of those for a bunch of games, city areas, places that I used to live, places that used to exist decades ago in my past that no longer do, etc. A labyrinthine emotional and spatial horror spiraling out of control.
Most of stuff in here is actual beta content such as: Mario's head model, some fonts, some text (such as the 'mario wonderland' message), textures, I'm too lazy to go into real detail but if you wanna know more The Cutting Room Floor page is a good place to go.
Mario doing the “yeah” from Rayman 2 makes me more uncomfy than I thought it would
Well, technically before rayman
@@Slipperyslab The sound is from Rayman 2, this is a fan made project.
@@OtakuUnitedStudio no the sound is from sm64 beta. Thats literally what a portion of this mod is based off of.
I thought that was Billy from Billy and Mandy.
It's probably a stock sound effect that was used in both the SM64 beta and the Rayman games
But yeah, hearing that "yeah" without a weird little goblin laugh after, like in the level complete jingle from Rayman 1,is messing with my mind a bit
honestly this is one of the better attempts to mimic non Euclidean design, the constant doors that lead to new paths but never seemingly the same path except when it is the same path into much larger rooms inside of smaller rooms with twisting and turning the shifting colors and odd music tone shifts, it does genuinely make you disoriented
it certainly does but it's not really non-euclidean except for that the castle is bigger from the inside
I’d call it inconsistent-Euclidean, like 5 90° corners in a square, 5 rooms where there should be 4
Which is odd now, because abut a month ago he played a game that, by the original definition of the term, *literally* non-Euclidean.
semi-euclidian i feel like. design-wise, your perception of it is euclidian and "normal", but your trajectory and the layout is not consistent with rules of euclidean geometry or something
I think I figured out why Mario 64 often has the vibe of a liminal space to it.
Liminal describes the intermediate, the transitional, the in-between. Super Mario 64 is *literally* a transition from 2D to 3D platforming; it’s certainly 3D, but still in its infancy.
Super Mario 64 is, by definition, a liminal game.
How about other N64 games?
@@LostSoulSilver Ocarina of Time and Kirby 64 are also liminal games for their franchises, and have similar aspects to them.
Part of the reason that a lot of people describe Mario 64 as "liminal" is because of a common misconception about the concept, where they use the work in reference to place that normally have lots of people (schools, airports, malls) but are, at the time, mostly empty. In which case, the liminality could be said to be related to the are "transitioning" between cycles of activity, but that's not really the definition, strictly speaking.
Anyway, Mario 64 takes place in a mostly empty castle with denizens that are literally invisible until you're almost right on top of them. It's like a ghost town. In fact, there are literal ghosts once you have enough stars. It's also a very strange design for a castle, with a creepy basement and a surreal attic, portals to other parts of the kingdom, and no throne room or bedrooms despite ostensibly being the residence of the royal family.
@@OtakuUnitedStudio I suppose I mean liminal in both the common misconception definition and the actual definition lol
Ehhhhh that sounds alot like overanalyzed stuff
@@starlite5154 True, but analysis is a crucial part of discovery. There's a lot to learn, especially about ourselves, by understanding the cause of a common social phenomenon.

Yes it is used in OOT I’m pretty sure in Kakariko Village (ignore my spelling errors if any I’m tired)
On that note, it would be really sick to see something like this romhack on a n64 zelda game.
i think they're just two very similar textures
VERY similar, not actually the same
@@lukabrasi001 If they're not actually the same, it's because the rom hackers had to recreate or remap the texture for some reason. Or maybe the emulator is being weird. Mario 64 and OoT famously use a lot of the same assets.
The game that Vinny was talking at 17:45 was Jumping Flash. Neither of the Jazz Jackrabbit were released on PS1, they were PC exclusives.
The background music in that not-quite-Wet-Dry-World was, no lie, amazing. I'd listen to that for hours.

@@aquamidideluxe5079 I’m assuming that’s an error and it meant to say Dec 17. You can easily tell by the layout of the castle that it is 0.7 as it is a bit different from previous versions. The developer even confirmed that Vinny played 0.7 and that he never gave him an early copy of the ROM hack, so the only explanation is that the date in the description is wrong.

N64 nostalgia. It's a bit of a shame that he checked out Dinosaur Planet before any patches existed. It was a real mess but there is an engaging game hiding beneath the instability and roughness.
Also the added eeriness/creepy vibes to them all
I feel like the reason it's so fascinating is that not even nintendo knew what the f they were doing at the time, so they just started throwing ideas at the wall and looked at what stuck. That and the fact the styles of these games changed so much from first view to release.

90% sure when I was a kid and got stuck half way through Mario 64 DS, I had a fever dream that played out exactly like this.
it's always three goombas because goombas come in ones or threes. that's why that one goomba spawned at the bottom of the level: the object that spawned that trio put that goomba on the nearest ground available at that specific horizontal distance from the spawner.
This hack feels like a version of Mario 64 that you would play in a dream. The altered levels, the "beta" levels, the dizzying castle rooms with changing music, all of it just feels off, as if the game is being constructed as you're playing it, generating whatever comes next based off of your controller inputs.
That was the one of aims of the project: recreate beta levels, stories about "personalized copies" or levels people dreamed about, and include some stuff creepypastas.

This is one of those Mario games you got delivered to you in the mail by the sender "Nintendoo" in 1997
Seeing as how VERY many times people have tried to replicate Mario 64 Beta, this seems like it's really struck a nice balance of that and something new entirely.
Hopefully, it will put all that to rest.
Im pretty sure that town level you’re in around the 17 minute mark is based on the wdw skybox. I’m looking at it and there seem to be some similar buildings, not to mention the color scheme is basically identical

Man, this looks amazing for a game that was owned by the pope in 1991 before he killed himself with a gun he got from Adam Sandler after doing an occult ritual with the cartridge.
There's this feeling we all have from time to time, but no one can describe. This, I believe, is the closest we've gotten to doing just that.
Imagine if Charles Martinet would have never voiced Mario and we were left with this voice, it would have been a totally different experience! This was pretty cool though, anything related to Super Mario 64 always draws my attention even the creepy, random, strange things! Thanks for sharing Vin, this was an interesting adventure to watch for sure!
To answer what that yellow switch did, it randomized the “personalization values” of the game
These track various things you’ve done and adjust the game accordingly
For example, if you’re playing well and not getting hit or dying often, it will adjust itself to be harder
If you’re playing poorly, it will adjust itself to be easier
And as you saw, it has some other strange effects that it can do, such as giving stars or removing your hat
I hope this will give new life to the whole mysteries of mario64 things like the iceberg, personalization and so on
i fucking lost it at "spainstation" not going to lie. was completely out of nowhere.
Even if some of this is made up, them and the beta recreation bits fill me with the same uneasy and uncanny
feelings that seeing actual beta content within, or inserted back in does. Like, unfinished early areas in Zelda
there's a creepy emptiness to it at times. Doesn't happen nearly as much with 2D, or later 3D games tho
is that just me? Like Majora's Mask itself is creepy, but Ben Drowned permanently left a mark and enhanced
the game for me. A bit that _is_ beta content and always gave me that eeriness is the slides. And I finally
made the connection at around 37:50, the show mentioned here is likely Nintendo Spaceworld.
So I guess that's the context for this hack, a lost and found Spaceworld demo with creepy stuff underneath
2024 is great so far. Did you know that Steamboat Willie is now in the public domain?
Joheim did a hell of a job cleaning this one up, good find Vinny.
26:38 I mean yeah, 2024 so far has been a good year, we got some game sequels and development which benefits much of our virtual entertainment
BRO this is exactly like one of my dreams where there was hundreds of levels and no matter how many you played, there always seemed like there was another level in a different place in the castle.
And yes the castle was as confusing as it is in this hack
This romhack feels like when you have a dream about a game you're playing, and it's mostly correct but things are all slightly off and different, and sometimes there are features that don't exist in the real game
Some of the songs on these levels are really atmospheric and I'm really digging them.
Man the first Bob-Omb quoting a Megadeth lyric certainly threw me for a loop.
The whole segment of the "wet dry world" is the Ocarina of Time beta Castle Town. It's really cool, so much beta stuff in OoT didn't make it in, and I wish it did!
no it's not?
The AI that built this castle knows some top tier trolling
This feels like how, you hear about the Shining, how Kubrick would move around things in-between shots to make the viewer feel uncomfortable, because they'd subconsciously recognize that things were out of place. That's how this game feels like.
Ah yeah my favorite Mario catchphrase: "YEAH!". Just like how I remembered it after all these years. Good times
beta mario be like _H O O H_
Kamek: Mario, don’t you realize that in the multiverse there’s an infinite amount of Super Mario 64 beta levels and if that spell gets loose they’re all coming here!
(Spell proceeds to get loose)
0:40 Wow, I LOVE how this build’s File Select Screen sounds, oh my god
Super Mario: Shattered Memories
This version of the game is so bizarre. You have like three different castle layouts that you are seemingly randomly transported into, new levels with elements of old ones, levels based on actual beta content, and then actual normal levels that are just empty. Not to mention rooms that have almost nothing in them. Really creepy stuff honestly.
So glad vinny is playing Mario 64 again. Personally I like the 3003135 build more though.
I see what you did there
177013 is the best build
As someone from 2024, we're doing fine.
