I'm glad Vinny played this again though this hack is crazy in what it can do with Mario 64 reminds me of what Myhouse did to DOOM I hope we get more hacks like these in the future to other games
Back again. Despite the troubled development, it's been quite interesting seeing progress of it chug along. Hopefully it still gets the chance to be completed, but we'll just have to wait and see.
Someone needs to make a compilation of Vinny's haunted game backstories. I've already lost count of how many times he's come up with some variation of "Saddam Hussein's asshole".
This hack compels me because it reminds me so much of the video game-inspired dreams/nightmares I had as a kid. Like, in oddly specific ways sometimes.
It was fairly common for me to have SM64 themed dreams (and Zelda dreams, among other games), this hack does somewhat feel like playing one of those dreams. There was something so fun and interesting about those dreams. I mostly stopped having dreams like that after extensively exploring and completing those games on emulators, like all the mystery had cleared and my mind no longer felt the need to think about it so much, still occasionally shows up in my dreams though.
@@elio7610 I remember having dreams with doom and having it to be friggin terrifying, I remember I always walked so slow without any guns and watching at amy hallway corner and not even moving at all sometimes because I was scared of making noice and every monster or zombie running into me right away. The place was like a total recreation of the first episode maps and was dark af, like when you wake up on the middle of the night walking in the house looking for something, kind of a labyrinth.
@@tobbeborislybaI had a dream like that after playing the first three levels of PS1 Doom as a kid except in that dream I was playing the game. An endless labyrinth of gray brick hallways populated by zombiemen with no rooms or open areas, only hallways and ladders with computers within the indentations in the walls, all the while Adrew Hodges music was playing in the background. Once one of the zombies killed me doomguy clipped through the floor and I saw outside the map that the labyrinth sprawled endlessly in all directions, even though corridors can't be placed below each other in the Doom engine, but I didn't know that at the time. It wasn't scary, but for some reason the imagery stuck with me.
Honestly one of the coolest things of this romhack is the bird looping sfx. Like it's both unsettling and comforting when you've been indoors for ages.
"Your senses get confused if you played Mario 64." So true. This mod is giving me the creeps because I'm so used to expecting certain elements in Peach's castle and this mod constantly reminding me that I need to get out of my comfort zone.
51:32 Who's gonna break it to Vinny that there was in fact, 2 other GameBoys between the Original and Color The GameBoy Pocket(1996) and GameBoy Light(released only in Japan in 1998 just half a year before the Color and it had a backlit screen before the Advance SP)
Those are just hardware revisions of the original Gameboy, not entirely new handhelds. In the same way the SP, AGS-101, and Micro are just Gameboy Advances. Or the PS One is a revision of the PlayStation and the Super Nintendo Light is a revision of the Super Nintendo. If you're delineating based on hardware revisions then there's actually five versions, the original '89 Gameboy, the '92 one with the replaced LCD, the Play It Loud! ones with the custom cases, the Pocket, and the Light. They all use the same core hardware though.
Honestly wish they kept the old soundtrack for this. I like that they added new tracks, but prefer if they kept the normal music for levels that are supposed to look like finalized versions of that level. Creepy tracks for the creepy areas only, I’d say. Takes away from the “beta version” mystique and treads more into creepypasta territory when too many tracks are distorted.
About that, the music actually changes depending on the time of day. If it’s the middle of the day, the music is normal. At night, it’s more of a lullaby style.
I personally think a lot of the songs are fine, but good Lord does it get tiring hearing it rapidly switch to like 10 different flavors of Peach's Castle every few minutes, if even that long It was probably intentional to make things feel uncanny or like you're losing your grip on what the song is supposed to sound like, and for some it probably does just that, but for me at least, it's annoying and nothing more They really should've just kept the good ol' original castle theme throughout most of it, only changing it up for areas that are _substantially_ different, like a decaying version of the castle I'd even almost say that each song should just be assigned specifically to nice, clear areas, like maybe the Wrinkly version of the castle theme only going to areas that are set directly outside the castle, but I feel like that's already the case to an extent, it's just the warps are so all over the place that you're constantly dipping your toes into different areas and it just ends up being a mess as a result I dunno, I get it's basically Super Backrooms 64, so you shouldn't be having a consistent, peaceful song accompanying you throughout most of it, but when the alternative is the equivalent to blindly skipping through a playlist for a song that Feels Right™️, I'm probably just going to mute the game and manually put on some regular-ass Peach's Castle instead
I've been checking out more Mario 64 mods myself lately and I love magical land. Vinny would probably like it too. I wish there'd be one that's kinda like b3313 but it's more like render96 adding content to the base game but up to eleven. Just simply adding a lot more levels, characters, and features based on beta and rumor stuff that's comprehensible and feels like it can be an official release. All able to run on actual hardware of course.
I'm happy that work on the rom will be continued by others. It's sad to see incomplete games/hacks that have all the work sitting on a lonely hard drive somewhere, just to be forgotten.
@@JaeSamantha Nah you're right. it was frozen in a block of ice for 30 years in the North Pole. Santa saw how defective the cartridge was and tossed it out the sled and gave the kid coal instead.
The old music was objectivley better. It was a little simpler which makes it feel more beta like. I feel like this new music is more UN beta like. I mean duxking touhou music, seriously?
@@blueyosh43 I mean at least for me that song was remixed enough that I didn't even notice it was a Touhou song until it was pointed out by the chat and listened closer to it, but even then I think just taking music from other Mario games of the time would work better for what they're going for if they really want a greater variety of music.
I like the idea of Vinny sending the cartridge back in time caused a paradox by becoming the main inspiration for the Super Mario 64 creepypastas. Also, who is to say time-travelling trolls aren't real? Like, if someone from the future altered the timeline we wouldn't know cause we live inside the new changed timeline. That's our only world. For all we know, a time troll might be behind every horrible moment in history.
What if they only let you use time travel to mess with the past in inconsequential ways so that we end up with creepypastas and the extinction of dodo birds
"The Nintony CDI!" Other pitched names included Sintendy (but the big N wasn't too keen on it) and the Sontendo (But people would hear it and think it was some kind of big funny hat).
"Ugh... Chat, once again, it's B3313 (in slightly annoyed tone)" I have a feeling he wants to hate this hack! (i mean there is also the possibility he could've just had a crappy day before the stream or something)
Fun fact if anyone didn't know: b3313 is somewhat inspired by mario 64 classified. It's an analog horror series with 2 seasons, that other mario drowning part was also part of that series, I'll let you guys or gals figure that out, though.
I'm still torn on this hack because of its ups and downs, but 1:58:33 is such a great moment to me, it really feels like a "Beat the running man, but it's actually real"-kinda thing that is both exciting and bewildering. I love that!
This hack totally emulates the feeling of playing video games as a young child, there’s so many things to do that you’ll never get close to beating it, there’s tons of moments where any type of continuity is thrown out the window, you just kind of feel lost, aimless, and vaguely scared.

How to describe it? The Shoshinkai 1995 beta of Super Mario 64. That is also cursed. (and also the best Mario 64 experience ever)
21:59 this track caught me off guard live, an oddly beautiful rendition. hope the full version is uploaded somewhere. great stream !
20:24 There's morse code beeping in a much lower frequency under the tones here. I thought my phone was going off next to me at first, but it's the music!
Any clue what it says?

I'm glad Vinny played this again though this hack is crazy in what it can do with Mario 64 reminds me of what Myhouse did to DOOM
I hope we get more hacks like these in the future to other games
"Your senses get confused if you played Mario 64."
So true. This mod is giving me the creeps because I'm so used to expecting certain elements in Peach's castle and this mod constantly reminding me that I need to get out of my comfort zone.
I love this beautiful, infernal thing. It belongs in a museum, and so do all the maps people have tried to make of it.

Who's gonna break it to Vinny that there was in fact, 2 other GameBoys between the Original and Color
The GameBoy Pocket(1996) and GameBoy Light(released only in Japan in 1998 just half a year before the Color and it had a backlit screen before the Advance SP)
Why does the music at 1:17:25 really fit with the dialogue that the Bob-Omb delivers, evoking such a strong emotion? "He is at last finally free."

it surprises me how I thought this song reminded me of touhou, only to find out a couple minutes later that twitch chat thought the same
John Miyamoto shat this into a diaper and left it in a Dairy Queen parking lot on a stormy night. Someone update the wiki.
15:00 this area actually existed in SM64's code or was found in the leak and was labeled funhouse in the files (which is reflected on the sign)
1:35:00 i have a great need to see what's behind that wall
It's just a jumpscare that bricks the emulator
horrible jumpscare

The real horror was Vinny not picking up that last coin
Come back to this when the full 1.0 is out. The game is exponentially bigger than the last 0.7 release it’s awesome
The only things missing are star ids (which is irrelevant to the player unless you're trying to 100% the game like an autist) and an "ending" .
Yeah new areas are cool but some of the songs are straight downgrades. I have mixed feelings on the music box at night thing too.
Yeah new areas are cool but some of the songs are straight downgrades. I have mixed feelings on the music box at night thing too.
About that, the music actually changes depending on the time of day. If it’s the middle of the day, the music is normal. At night, it’s more of a lullaby style.
That and the lighting being dark to the point of it being frustrating to watch
I personally think a lot of the songs are fine, but good Lord does it get tiring hearing it rapidly switch to like 10 different flavors of Peach's Castle every few minutes, if even that long
It was probably intentional to make things feel uncanny or like you're losing your grip on what the song is supposed to sound like, and for some it probably does just that, but for me at least, it's annoying and nothing more
They really should've just kept the good ol' original castle theme throughout most of it, only changing it up for areas that are _substantially_ different, like a decaying version of the castle
I'd even almost say that each song should just be assigned specifically to nice, clear areas, like maybe the Wrinkly version of the castle theme only going to areas that are set directly outside the castle, but I feel like that's already the case to an extent, it's just the warps are so all over the place that you're constantly dipping your toes into different areas and it just ends up being a mess as a result
I dunno, I get it's basically Super Backrooms 64, so you shouldn't be having a consistent, peaceful song accompanying you throughout most of it, but when the alternative is the equivalent to blindly skipping through a playlist for a song that Feels Right™️, I'm probably just going to mute the game and manually put on some regular-ass Peach's Castle instead
All able to run on actual hardware of course.
yep everywhere i swear xD
No milk is pretty stupy
Binyot "I can play this for another 15mins chat"
Sees there's still 35mins left on the video - you know this game is special!
I'm happy that work on the rom will be continued by others. It's sad to see incomplete games/hacks that have all the work sitting on a lonely hard drive somewhere, just to be forgotten.
Even though there's seemingly no jumpscares, this still creeps me the hell out to watch.
Even in the normal areas
Oh believe me, there’s a couple jumpscares. You gotta find them though
@@JaeSamantha Nah you're right. Went on to experience two later that day, or at least one that same day and one after
It was Joel playing 0.8 and he encountered the faceless floating Mario head that crashes the game, but for him it just glitched and reset
And then the pitch black hallway that instantly teleports you into water, face first into an unmoving eel. That last one did get me pretty well
I found a forested area where a silhoutte Mario chases you and crashes the game. Idk if there's more in there, it was incredibly hard to find.
@@yurifairy2969 I think it’s literally just the demon Mario
There's also the variant of the basement where the fireball from the Lethal Lava Land painting comes towards you and crashes the game
Also the two toad jumpscares as well as a few other things
I was, no joke, JUST talking to a friend of mine last night about this series, and how I wanted more, and HERE we are! SO hyped to watch this!!
2:13:48 now this is the kind of content I want to see
Truly the Yume Nikki of Mario 64 hacks.
My favourite romhack of anything ever has returned. Been playing it myself and its super fun.
I like how the origin story of this rom changes every single time vin brings it up
it was frozen in a block of ice for 30 years in the North Pole. Santa saw how defective the cartridge was and tossed it out the sled and gave the kid coal instead.
John Miyamoto made it (real)

There's about 400 stars, good luck
22:00 “Red star??”
Unironically I had a dream that Mario 64 had red stars… 😂
@ 53:10 Potassium
Bananas are famously rich in potassium
Drugs (medicine) may contain it
Imbalance may lead to frequent visits to the toilet.
1:20 Spot on, his band gets like no views :(
Even though it makes more sense for the music to be "beta versions" of real SM64 songs, I liked the old music better personally
It only sounds like that at night
The old music was objectivley better. It was a little simpler which makes it feel more beta like. I feel like this new music is more UN beta like. I mean duxking touhou music, seriously?
@@blueyosh43 I mean at least for me that song was remixed enough that I didn't even notice it was a Touhou song until it was pointed out by the chat and listened closer to it, but even then I think just taking music from other Mario games of the time would work better for what they're going for if they really want a greater variety of music.
That falling scream is so visceral it really sounds like Mario just broke both of his legs.
43:54 maybe 9/11 was a time travel troll
Vinesauce more like applesauce

the riff at 55:53 has been in my head ever since this stream and i hate it
what do you mean "over a year"?
WHAT do you mEAN over a yEAR!!?
John Miyamoto was really onto something with this. I mean ol' Jack had something going on. lets give it up for her.
"The Nintony CDI!"
Other pitched names included Sintendy (but the big N wasn't too keen on it) and the Sontendo (But people would hear it and think it was some kind of big funny hat).

Nice perfectly timed with my sleeping schedule
"Ugh... Chat, once again, it's B3313 (in slightly annoyed tone)"
I have a feeling he wants to hate this hack!
(i mean there is also the possibility he could've just had a crappy day before the stream or something)
Vinny does talk about that finger tech... But its actually real and was only used for Tetris on the N64.
honestly my first thought when seeing the grabby robot was that it was a "cuck-ya"
1:20:00 is the thumbnail if anyone was curious
Fun fact if anyone didn't know: b3313 is somewhat inspired by mario 64 classified. It's an analog horror series with 2 seasons, that other mario drowning part was also part of that series, I'll let you guys or gals figure that out, though.
I'm still torn on this hack because of its ups and downs, but 1:58:33 is such a great moment to me, it really feels like a "Beat the running man, but it's actually real"-kinda thing that is both exciting and bewildering. I love that!
One of Mario's voice clips sounds like Hestu from BotW/Totk just as he's about to dance.
I love finding attachable organs in my dairy queen dumpster
Banana+drugs+toilet just made me think of a prostitute.
In a way, it almost feels fitting that it’s incomplete????
yume nikki never reached 1.0 either, so!
Agree
I’ve never heard so many versions of the Castle Theme
YES! I’ve missed b3313 content
This hack totally emulates the feeling of playing video games as a young child, there’s so many things to do that you’ll never get close to beating it, there’s tons of moments where any type of continuity is thrown out the window, you just kind of feel lost, aimless, and vaguely scared.
