  • Listen to a comparison of 3 affordable ribbon microphones set in front of a drum kit in a room.
    1. Cascade Fathead
    2. Monoprice LR100
    3. Samar AL95
I hadn't had a chance to do a side by side with these mics yet, so did a quickie test... if you can't hear the differences and gain useful information from this, you should get a new hobby. (Spoiler alert: Two sounded very close, one stood out... all were useful and could be awesome.)
Each microphone was run through an identical microphone preamp.
Gain was set to achieve a nice healthy output level that was eyeball matched between the 3 during tracking. The levels were then matched to within.3db of each other so you are not hearing any significant difference in loudness... the differences you hear are the inherent character/tone of the microphone.
Because this is a working studio, when I'm auditioning mics/preamps/whatever... I'm sitting there listening to the performance and judging... not asking somebody to record a part and then sitting down and listening to the same identical passage 3xs. Nothing wrong with that, can be useful for sure... but that's not the real world. In the real world you ask the drummer to play his part and swap stuff as she/he goes... you LISTEN. That's your job. SO, know deep down in your heart... that if you can't find this test useful, it's you. Find a new hobby.
I was surprised and pleased to discover two of these microphones sound really close to each other... this is great because now I've got enough cool ribbons to keep a couple set up on guitar amps all the time, and a couple set on the kit all the time... and not stress. You know my motto: SHUT UP AND RECORD... don't think about it. Just go and make sure the SONG is good. The rest of the shit takes care of itself.
Thanks for watching/reading this... if you want the individual files for each mic I'm happy to provide you links... just message me. (Im not always the fastest to check messages because I'm busy.. NOT trying to be a successful UA-cam.). But I'll def get back to you asap.
    THANKS,
    Marty

Thanks for posting this video! I found it because I'm thinking about a new ribbon OH mic and was interested in Samar. Turns out it was a clear favorite for me out of these three, it sounds like the most even frequency response of the three, with no weird tones or boxiness going on.

Have never heard of those Samars and that thing is very impressive. Seems really well balanced, picks up a lot of the crisp high end and the punch of the low end.

From the "Shut Up" on, love how you did this thing! The Monoprice holds up way better than expected, crazy having seen them go for like $70.
