  • Here's our latest demonstration video filmed and recorded at our brand new studio & showoroom: www.thearmoury.co.nz
    In this video we're comparing 2 models from Cascade Microphones. The Fathead I and the Vin-Jet with Landahl upgrades against the well known classic studio ribbon by STC (Coles) the 4038. The pair we had for this video had been recently re-ribboned. So it's as fair as we can make it.
    You will need to turn this up, there is NO compression or 2 buss limiting.
    As you'll see the results are very amazing. We weren't expecting the results, all we can say is we have both models by Cascade in stock here: www.stlproaudio.co.nz
    All microphones are volume matched at the preamp. Recorded at 48khz/32bit in Pro Tools 12HDX, via Lynx Aurora's.
    You can also email us to join our drop box and download the session/files and listen for yourself: sales@stlaudio.co.nz
    Filmed, Edited, Recorded & Mixed by Troy Kelly (TKO)
    Thanks to Jacob Randal for his performance.
    Thanks for watching another STL Audio video demo.

    This Cascade Vin-Jet sound amazing - warm, round, with enough low end and smooth high end - lovely. Not that the other ribbons are bad sounding microphones, but these two are outstanding.

    I noticed a top end cut on the cymbals when it changed from the Coles to the Fathead. All the mics sounded very useable.
    thanks for a great comparison video.

    All are awesome sounds but what I really love here is that you are using a real drummer that is playing something worth listening to. Great demo; please keep more stuff like this coming.

      @@STLAudio That's awesome and I think it's a better way to do demos. I've seen too many mic demos, even from companies that are selling premium microphones at insane prices, use a non-drummer to do the demo. It's hard to listen to the differences in the sound of the mics when the playing is distractingly bad.

    I think the Vin-Jets were the winners on this kit, but obviously the Coles are great too. Fatheads sounded a bit to carpety to me I guess. Vin-Jets are now on the shopping list :)

      The Fatheads definitely react to initial transients faster than the other two, while the VinJet definitely has its own perks…especially in front of a kick or room mic! I recently recorded a saxophone quartet piece for a colleague, using the VinJet and ML1 for assurance, and man the VinJet is something. When I recorded cajon parts for the piece, Fathead came out to play.

    damn, my expectations in getting a mic on par with Coles for a lot less amount of money, is almost finishing... Impossible task and I gotta live with that.

    just wanted to say thank you / the studio for putting in the time to do these mic demos. trying to find a brass-tax demonstration of something with consistent playing / mixing / on-screen notations is like trying to order a good beer on tap without having to recite a fucking yeats poem.

    Coles sound SMOOOOTH.

    I wonder how different the vin-jet standard vs lundahls will be. huge price difference. almost 2x

    Hmmm.. I borrowed a pair of fatheads, then decided to buy the Coles. Recorded them on the same kit, same position, days apart. The difference is MUCH more dramatic than this video. Fatheads are definitely cool for the price, but it was no contest at all with the Coles. Maybe I'll post it up sometime.

      Unless its on the same day, with the same preamps, same performance there is too many variables. These are Fathead I's with no transformers. The Coles where re ribboned recently. It also depends on your room too the Coles are a more lot sympathetic on bad rooms.

      Probably that our PC-setup and UA-cam compression isn't helping at all.

      Ya, the low end was nuts! Placement and level could have abit to do with it too! I feel like that was abit much of a difference because Coles are super fat in the lows usually!

    So many inexperienced drummers play the cymbals way too loudly in the studio. You can actually crank the preamps more and get a fatter sound if you play more lightly. Just sounds very thin and clicky to me.

  • @TiqueO6
    @TiqueO6 4 роки тому

    Move the set out of the corner and maybe you'll get overall better results...maybe too many heavy first reflections back into the mics especially when using distant micing like this, how high is the ceiling, it is treated if it's not like 3 or 4 times what we see here?

    • @STLAudio
      @STLAudio  4 роки тому +5

      It's not about the room , it's about how similar they sound and the huge price difference. The wall is actually a 13ft high bass trap that goes down extremely low and the wall on his left is the same but adds mid band absorbers as well and is around 3ft deep. The studio was deigned by an acoustician and we have no issues what so ever with the reflections of any frequency in that position.

      STLAudio Cool, thanks for the response and information, just curious how close the overhead microphone is to the back wall or corner has shown there?

    • @STLAudio
      @STLAudio  4 роки тому +1

      @@TiqueO6 at lest 3ft to wall and 4-6 to treatment in ceiling.

    • @TiqueO6

      @@STLAudio thanks, Hmm, so with figure of 8's that's nearly equidistant from much of the drum set to the ceiling and half that to what looks like considerable reflective wall surface-areas, it might not hurt to try more distance and/or using the extreme off-axis nulls to your advantage (point to nulls towards the nearest surfaces a bit. You know how in the old days these kinds of bi-directional mics a usually seen angled and it's for that reason usually). Usually we’re dealing with some sort of cardioid patterns so some adjustments to our usual ways can make all the difference.
      (BTW, I had just had a very similar take on a clip of drum set recorded with one Stereo Ribbon and another ribbon on the kick)
