G'day, Laura. I've just stumbled onto your channel tonight, and loved the content. I'm sad that you have had this experience of being freaked out, but I know it can happen to anyone. Having survival tools at hand can certainly bring a sense of peace to our minds. Having said that, after you have conquered this misgiving, and know you are safe, off-grid camping can be one of the best recreations around! I do hope you continue with your camping adventures, and that you make many, many happy camping memories with your partner! If children are in the offing, I have the BEST memories of camping with my family from about 8 years old right up-to, and including, the last 39 years of parent hood and married life. We have now extended our camping to include our grandchildren as well.
I'm hoping to see more videos from you in the future.
    Cheers for now,

@@JourneyUnknown I am currently looking forward to a short trip to the Gold Coast with the family, showing the grandkids the theme parks, so that should be fun.
The wife and I have been trying to start our "Around Australia" 🚌🚋 trip for the last 18 months, but living in Yea, VIC, we had almost as many lockdowns as Melbourne did. Our last trip looked to be more promising as we made our way north through Shepparton over the border and up through Forbes & Parkes, to Bourke then across to Lightning Ridge. This was just as the last "unusual weather" incident occurred, flooding parts of QLD, and NSW. We turned tail, and ran, got back home, celebrated our eldest granddaughter's 21st 🍻🍺, and started helping our daughter with her cleaning business. We haven't quite made it yet, but our plans are certainly front and centre for continuing our exploration of Oz. Stay well, and see you in the next one.
PS. Kinglake is a beautiful place, never camped there though. It's a bit TOO close to home for me @ 20-25mins away 🌹

If you go camping by yourself often then buy a good torch I bought my daughters olight warriors and they shine 400 metres and 600 when you use the turbo which is only okay for 1 minute.
The other good feature is the strobe light because if someone approaches you and your scared then turn on the strobe and face it straight in their eyes.
It’s that bright that the person won’t be able to focus for 20-30 seconds which is enough time to get either in your car and lock the doors or run and find somewhere that you know is close and safe.
Hopefully this makes sense and you feel bit safer knowing that you have a torch bright enough to ease the anxiety a bit.

    • @JourneyUnknown

So, something we do along with others we know is to book a site on a Thurs or Fri prior to our planned Sat-Sun stay to ensure we get a site for the weekend, but we don't show up until Fri night or Sat, which leaves our paid for sight empty for a night or two. Not sure that would explain all the absences you noted, but perhaps combined with the storm forecast?
This is no way criticizes your decision to leave. Much respect for following your instincts.

    • @JourneyUnknown
      @JourneyUnknown  2 роки тому +2

That’s possible because there is a travel incentive at the moment in Vic but you must book for 2 nights minimum stay so many people could’ve done that and only turned up on the Saturday for 1 night. The storm definitely would’ve played a major factor but people could’ve possibly turned up after I left at 7:30. 🤷‍♀️

    1. Install high intensity flood lights on top of your van that are remote control.
    2. Install steel loop handles onto all of your doors. Then loop your seat belts through them and click them into their harness. No way that door can be opened from the outside. Even if it is unlocked. Do the same for your side and back doors.
    3. Install a police siren on your van connected to your fob key panic button.
    4. ALWAYS park under a street light if possible.
    5. Get a big dog or at least a barking dog sound on your horn.
Finally. Most important. Always. Always trust your gut instinct. Your conscience will tell you of impending danger. Listen to it and get the hell out of there! DRIVE AWAY!
    Stay safe!

I really like your camping setup, it wouldn't work for me because, lol, I don't like heights. I would have left also, so don't feel bad. I've always thought I'd like a small motorhome or van, fully equipped. But I've seen a couple videos of couples out there and things happen. I'm too scared now. I did, however I used to live on my own in a tent ⛺, back when I was 19. I lived in that for 8 months. I had a blast but some frightening moments as well. Now I'm almost 62, I am on disability so I have lots of time, but no courage. Have fun while your young, always follow your instincts and take someone with you. Have fun.!

I usually have a bush knife on my belt and my axe close at hand which helps with my anxiety when out alone. I think you did the right thing regardless of anyones opinion or advice always follow your instict. If it says go, go. Speaking of Kinglake how's this for a true story my dad grew up in a orphanage and was adopted he was about 11 or 12 years old. They treated him really bad he was so scared of the abuse that he ran away from those people. At twelve years of age he ran away from melbourne all the way to Kinglake found a man who understood and gave him a job in a sawmill my Dad hid lived and worked in that sawmill until he was 18 and stayed there fulltime because he was so scared of going back to the family that abused him. When he turned 18 he left the sawmill straight away changed his surname then went on and had a beautiful family and a Beautiful Life. Respect to my Dad the most beautiful man i have ever known i am so lucky to have him as my Dad. Best wishes. 👍

oh Laura even though this is a year ago i want to say how brave you are to even attempt solo camping..ive done it a few times and yes the only time i didnt feel right was when there was no one else around..it is very eerie and your mind can go places and convince you of many things ..but in saying that ..there are pigs ,wild dogs and all sorts of critters. We have a gut instinct for a reason and yours seems to work well ,always listen to it..even those trees ..not called widow makers for no reason. Again ,well done, you are inspirational to other women (and men) . Stay safe x love to Coco x

If you get a bad feeling and cannot shake it then it is better to listen to that feeling and leave. I have done that myself. In a place that I had stayed in plenty of times. One time I just felt nervous there and so I left. I was armed at the time as well but I chose to listen to my feelings on that one.

My wife and I was camping in a primitive area where there was no people and In the middle of the night a car pulled up with the head light shining on our tent the only thing that gave me comfort was I had a 357 magnum in my hand we just stayed put and waited they eventually drove off. My husband pulled off his pack, cocked his weapon, as he could see their guns. As they drove away, they said sleep tight we know where you are camped. We have been watching you. When you are out alone at night, use minimal lights . If you have to use lights then dont flash it on your face. Avoid recording videos in the night which requires you to focus lights on your face. Let your eyes get used to the darkness. Tie up your hair in a ponytail or something. Dont let it fall to the sides of your face. It restricts your corner view. Carry a powerful torch on you at all times. You can at least flash it around and try to spot if someone /something is in the bushes. Dont forget that a powerful torch can also blind someone for a few seconds. The older 12 inch maglite makes a good baton. Lastly, dont camp alone if you think you cannot deal with your mind. The mind plays a lot of tricks on us especially at nites. Take care !

You followed your 6th sense and got the hell out of there.
I think you did the right thing by leaving. You lasted a lot longer than I would have.
But hey, you did show yourself that you can set up the rooftop tent, and if you had to, you know what to do.
But please always take protection if not for animal predators but for the worst kind of predators "human" EEK! They can be very unpredictable.
I'm so happy you're safe, and nothing bad happened to you.
Thank you for sharing your intense adventure. And for letting me ramble.
Oh, wait, one more thing. I also wanted to add that it was an awesome looking campground; you picked a great spot.
I wonder, and I am actually wondering this for myself also, that if maybe a big dog would have made a difference if you stayed or not, but with it being a rooftop tent, how would the dog get in the tent? Never mind, lol, that would not work anyway 😅 🤣
Do you think a campfire would have made a difference in the way you felt?
For me, I don't think a campfire would have helped hmmm 🤔
Okay, now that I wrote a book, lol. Stay Safe.
    Keep Adventuring

The rooftop tent is awesome and I do have a dog box below that my dog travels and sleeps in but I couldn’t take a dog to this camp spot as it was a National park. Sleep in a 1 man tent where ever I end up at dark, and sleep like a baby. If a person is out there to do me harm, Mother F'ers gonna have to come thru a shit ton of lead to do it. I'm not in Grizzly country, so no worries there, and I don't believe in Big Foot, Ghosts, Werwolves, or any other shit that goes bump in the night, so short of some whacko person, or rabid critter, I'm staying where ever I lay my head for the night.

@@JourneyUnknown I love my 2nd amendment right to have a gun. It makes me sleep like a baby lamb at night in the woods, but knowing I can come out of that tent like the Tazmanian Devil if I need to. Had stare downs with bears, mtn. lions, wild horses, bull elk, and just about everything else that creeps in the woods at night, but not once did I feel like I was going to be on the losing end. You would be surprised how just having a handgun on your side gives you the confidence to go anywhere and sleep anywhere you want to explore in the sticks. I have a good friend (lady) who never carried a firearm. I always pleaded with her to do so. I even gave her a 357 magnum snubby to pack with her. One night she heard distinct footsteps approaching her tent. They stopped right outside and stood there for approx. 10 minutes. Turned and left without saying a word. She could only hear them breathing. Laid there all night freaking out... sunup she found the boot tracks just outside her tent walking up and then leaving in another direction. She carries that handgun with her all the time now, and never goes out overnight without a friend with her. Some whacko's out there in this crazy world. I hope you continue to enjoy your camping trips and you a safe always. As a young lady, always listen to those instincts.
