Sweden applied the same day as Finland. A year and a half later, Turkey and Hungary have yet to accept Sweden as a NATO member, despite the ongoing war in Europe. Perhaps this is the slowest entry, or the first failed entry. I'm sure they have their reasons, but as a Swede, I'm not going to book a holiday trip to Turkey or Hungary anytime soon. Love your channel.
The sad part is, the only real reason is that 1. Turkey wants to use our ratification to get something they want and 2. Hungary does what daddy Turkey+Putin wants..

Turkey and Hungary are having issues with freedom of expression in Sweden.
It seems to me that Turkey is holding out for concessions from Nato before agreeing to Sweden being admitted to the Nato family. I do not trust Turkey's leader nor Hungary's leader either who seems to be an extreme right individual. Cheers from Canada

There is something that has not been talked about enough in regards to the Finnish Armed Forces on any international media, and that is the high level of trust by the Finnish public in their Armed Forces: the civilians tend to see the soldiers as "our boys", because that is what they are: their sons, brothers, fathers, loved ones. To many men, it is also a continuation of a family tradition, seeing their sons in uniform, just as they themselves once were, and their fathers before them: something that binds past, present and future together. When we see soldiers and military equipment on the streets of Helsinki, we do not immediately fear a military coup. And I think that trust is also appreciated by the soldiers, reinforcing that valuable feeling of knowing why you serve and what you defend.

There are no Finnish anrmed forces in times of peace, except for the training officers and the very few special forces, and the high ranking officers at the headquarters. This is a mandatory service army, in other words, a slave army.

One thing they didn't really cover is the "total defense"-paradigm. Finland has a high readiness for war when it comes maintaining their civil society, with large stockpiles of grain, oil and other supplies, large shelters under Helsinki for example, and many other such measures. They do a really good job with that. In Sweden, we scrapped all of the civilian defense organization during the "eternal peace" of the early 2000's, and now have to rebuild from 0, but Finland kept theirs, and are ready now.
Thanks to our "great" politicians, never putting Sweden first.

Finnish artillery, ground forces, F35 and Sisu. Norwegian F35, marines and high tech weapon industry. Sweden with Gripen, CV90 and the rest of their resourches. Denmark with F35 and their beer and sausages. And with the Baltic countries NATO will be extremely strong up north. Guess Estonia, Latvia and Lithuainia will feel a lot safer in the future.
Sweden also has great subs and SIGINT aircrafts.. all nordic countries should (and do) co-operate to make a versatile combat group.

OP you are absolutely correct. I'm a Finn and I got a beer christmas calendar from To Öl and it was excellent already last year. Beer is important for morale.. Also the Danes might've given all their artillery to Ukraine already.
As a Brit, I can only see Finlands membership as a huge gain for NATO. Great mentality, ingrained history, some great up to date gear, local knowledge.

as a Finn, it's been very exciting to see that not only have the amount and size of exercises increased, the amount of international cooperation in these exercises are also at a whole new level!
I have to admit that I feel a bit left behind actually, because it's been 10 years since I did my conscription and I haven't been called to exercises yet. So I am considering doing some voluntary exercises as soon as I finish uni, would be good to see what's different and to learn the new equipment
I can highly recomend checking MPK courses there is a course called ''Paikallispuolustus 1'' that will give you huge package of info. They are weekend courses so it is easy to get to those. There is now ''Paikallispuolustus 3''. I think those are the best once to get all around knowledge about operating NLAW etc. but there is also other courses worth checking out!
I know from what I've read that allied artillery crews seem to be salivating to get to come to Finland because we have the largest training area for artillery in Europe. Training options are much larger here than elsewhere.
Same here, been over 10 years, waiting for my call to go back and refresh my training.
I did my service 21 years ago and was called back 13 years ago. Not much going on since, so I signed up to the local reservist union. Been to a few shooting range excercises, has been fun to attend. And cool to learn the new AR-15 rifles, even though we operate with korean DSAR-15. Not a bad gun though.

I'm doing my conscript service on Finnish navy as a boat driver. And as you said, the scenery is insane, sunsets and sunrises are so beautiful in Finnish coast. Just yesterday we had 4 americans marines onboard our boat as part of freezing winds 23 military exercise
that's so cool. about a year ago we were supposed to be in a joint exercise with some Americans (or Brits, or Swedes, it kept changing) but no foreign guys there exept a Swedish officer who was observing
I did my time in Russarö (russian island) as a boat man. Had a real good time. You get to sail million euro boats in the finest archipelago and learn shit like navigation!!

My now-dead grandfather went to Winter War at the age of 16, and fought all the way to '45 when he was injured by German grenade.
He lost something like 6 brothers to Russians.
He was in the battle of Raatteentie, that much I know.

Never joined the peacekeepers, I didn't even apply.
I said that Finland should apply for NATO membership already in the late-90s, and I'm super glad we finally have joined.
It provides us with extra security and I hope that NATO will open a proper base in Finland, maybe use Kauhava (for example) as a air base, etc.
I believe that NATO operations will bring invaluable real-life combat experience to FDF, and that both my son and my daughter will do their part in learning how to defend this country.
Finland might not be the best county in the world. It has a lot of flaws and problems (*a lot*). However, it is *our* country, and it is the best country for Finnish people.

When we got taught how to make the sounds of the letters of the alphabet, when we got to the letter R, we were made to use our tongues to continue it so it was like rrrrrrrrrrrr, with our tongues making a sound that sounded a bit like a motorbike engine revving. So if that was the correct word I picked out, then it's not that difficult for me to say. 🙂👍
The four Nordic Air forces are already extremely well integrated. There are some decent vids regarding that out there. Some of them quite informative as well.

As a first generation Canadian of Belgian parents, a visit to Bastogne in the Ardennes is quite something. It was an area of ferious battles in December 1944 with the Waffen SS to retake Antwerpen. Nice to see Finland exercising its sovereign rights!!

I've just noticed your Yorkshire Tea sign behind you - that's made about 10 miles from where I live! Loving your Finnish content; since I met my wife (born and raised in Turku), the history and culture of Finland has fascinated me.
SISU is well known in Scandinavia, we all know where it comes from and what it means. ❤to Finland from your neighbor.
What really stands out about Finland is the size of its military forces compared to the size of its population. If they were to activate their entire reserve force they could foot more than 1 million soldiers despite having a population of only 5.5 million. In other words almost 1/5 of their population are part of their reserve force. And they have quick activation schemes meaning they could have 280k soldiers probably within a week and the rest within a month or two if they really had to. Under ordinary circumstances their active force is about 24k with 256k in ready reserve.
Finland does not have the capability to activate their reserves though. First problem is lack of communication to reach the reserve and there are not enough weapons for the reserve

Definitely not more than a million, the total trained reserves were like 900k, incuding a lot of people that are no longer fit for service, in 2015 and that number is slowly going down as the population is aging

About interesting stories from grandparents: my grandfather started his service in a cavalry unit and ended it in a electronics warfare unit after Finland disbanded the last dragoon unit. So I got stories from the last Hakkapeliitta and one of the first EWAR specialists (in Finland).
In civilian life he made an impressive radio intercept system in his attic that could monitor basically anything unencrypted and coordinate with other hunters in a large area, mostly because normal antenna couldn't get good TV signal and some radio stations were missing.
Sweden would be very useful. We Finns are at the forefront, but service routes can be organized via Sweden with ships. Sweden has a large arms industry and airplanes that could operate from Finland, also using our country roads as runways. The entire Baltic Sea could be closed and cleared of Russian ships and submarines. Through Norway, Russia's connections to the Arctic Ocean could be closed. During the Second World War, it was the American supply route to the Soviet Union...
We would support Finland Nato or not but it will definitely be better when we join, we're soon hitting the 2% Nato minimum btw. We have two other like minded countries with a healthy attitude to Russia: Poland who is building a very powerful land army and Ukraine with what is probably the largest and most experienced infantry and drone army in Europe.
83 % of Finns are ready to militarily defend their country. I think it is easily highest in the world..

Love Scandinavia as a whole and your commenting, having been there, is awesome. I'm a US citizen since 2020, but did my service in the Swedish armed forces. The willingness here in Scandinavia to defend against Russian aggression is good. Even though I'm a bit old now, I keep in shape, ready to defend the US or Scandinavia. For me, it's very special to see a fellow American taking interest in a country like Finland. We're all in it together and I would certainly volunteer to help the Finns any day of the week. Respect to you and Finland.
On the topic of NATO countries bringing resources to Finland, from what I've understood that many NATO countries are extremely keen to use our shooting range at Rovajärvi which is the second largest artillery firing range in the entirety of Europe. I understand that for example British artillery is in rather dire straits simply because the UK has only one smallish area in which to fire and they've already booked time at Rovajärvi simply because of that reason.

I've noticed that there have been even more joint exercises this year than before in Finland. Just about a month ago there was one joint air force thing that included a lot of night time flying (or flying in dark at least... doesn't have to be at night this time of year 😂).
Excellent commentary, as usual. I think the biggest contribution the Finns can make to NATO is their awesome warriors. Pound for pound, among the best. The attitude, the will, the practical skills, the initiative is passed on from one generation of Finns to the next.

Finland is not able to send massive amounts of military personnel or equipment to defend other Nato countries. But Finland has strategic location, and it is able to defend its territory.

But I was more interested in the bearded guy's uniform. Czech uniforms are not very commonly seen in Finland.

As a Finn I feel our NATO membership is extremely important, and it also benefits the alliance as a whole.
Since the start of Ruzzia's full scale invasion to Ukraine, our reservist activities (exersices, voluntary exersices, shooting range activities etc.) jumped up like crazy. And since our NATO membership the quantity and of our exersices and joint operations within the alliance have grown even more.
With more comprehensive exposure to cross training with other militaries, we keep learning together. This makes me a very happy reservist indeed!
The Speed of Finlands Nato ratification is at least partly explained by the fact that even before the Ukraine invasion and Nato entry, both Sweden and Finland were in some kind of "Nato Ally/friend" program that was basically tailor made for Finland and Sweden to get both as Nato compatible as possible without actually being a member. After applying for entry all that was needed was some paperwork even though Sweden seems to be stuck in political limbo. Naturally there might be some changes in the future. With Nato membership Finland might either get or borrow some troop moving ships so if needed Finnish troops could be moved over Gulf of Finland to Estonia.

I served my 9 months on the flagship of the Finnish Navy, minelayer Hämeenmaa. Surveilance on the southern coast was pretty cool cause sometimes there really was Russian ships on our territorial waters and at that point it wasn’t an exercise any more. Rarely in the service you actually encounter Russians and suddently there you are just you and them in the middle of the ocean watching constantly each other. You can feel the tension in the air.
ikr, seeing for example the distinct shape of a russian submarine show up on the screen was always surreal, it stops being a training exercise real fast... weirdest thing I ever saw was a smaller russian submarine on the deck of a cargo vessel, poorly covered with a seemingly broken tarp

I didn't think Russia would go that far, but I was wrong and I had to change my opinion on NATO. Independence was always the issue, not neutrality, but Russia changed all of that with their actions. I'm glad to see Finland bring stability to the region and to help provide defence for the Baltic Circle.

The shots with guys running in the forest in that camo just proves how damn effective it is, they were blending really well. M05 is such a babe of a camo, love it to bits. I even use some M05 stuff for hiking stuff, it is just that pretty.

I made my Finnish service in 2000 for 9 months as a medic.
Finland has always been a western country even if there's some history as a 'slave to Soviets influence'. They call it finlandization or whatever.
Both my grandparents fought in the war and there was never a single thought about who is the enemy.
Anyway. I'm glad you've been to Finland and hope you know that a major majority of the people know what's going on.
I've always thought the NATO is the thing we should go for. But the history with Russia was so hard and even the politicians were "finlandizated".
Anyway now we're allied and that's everything.

Finnish artillery experience has always been the true nature of power - the field artillery. At it's all powers with FO's and capable gunners we have guarded the borders of the nation. There are some heroic tales guarding those actions during the WW2.
Finland also MFGs _a lot_ of material. Such as F35 Hornet engines, and F/A-18s were being manufactured here too at some point.
Nevermind the AK47 Luxury edition, best AK47 in the world, Sisu APC, some of the best bullets etc etc etc etc. the list is long and exhaustive.
Our entry into nato had probably something to do with that 2 months earlier polling showd usual numbers, which was 30% wanted to join. if you want someone to make a mistake.. you'll push n rush them.

This war is a tragedy, but it will have made it possible to highlight countries and actors, with incredible history and skillsets, who have been unfairly ignored.

something to know about, before NATO, Finland and Sweden had a strategy of Finland was covering a lot of land forces, due to being the boarder to Russia, and we in Sweden had our military to focus on Naval, Air and other stuff. so then putting Finland and Sweden´s military forces together you get the entire packaged. and this know Putin, guess why Turkey keep us out now, cuz Turkey is firends with Russia and Turkey as a NATO member is making its own NATO members weaker than it need to be and can bee. As a Swede without Finland as a military partner anymore, and not member of NATO we are kind of fucked. cuz our strength is not on the ground as the Fins are. Dont forget, both Sweden and Finland as a pair, have trained A LOT with NATO, we are already NATO trained its more like the membership features are now active. not that Finland and Sweden need anything tech or training form NATO. its the military forces then attacked that is needed to repel Russians.
and also i am for Sweden joining NATO, but then Turkey and its Islamic gov is behaving like this, i am not sure i want to be in NATO anymore, cuz NATO dont do anything about Erdogan´s behaviour.
I think you should make a standard checklist for each video. Then at the end give it a rating out of a hundred. Be confident with your score and don't feel bad about giving negative points if you see something that is off.
You say "that's so cool in the snow". Doing maneuvers in snow conditions is a nightmare.

In a way, nothing has changed, but still so many things have changed, and will change in the future.
Finland brings in 250 000 soldiers (in the field) which is fullfilled from reserves of 890 000 - 900 000 men / women. Though that is ofc the numbers for defending finnish territory, not ofc for Nato ops, but there has been some news that little percentage from drafted soldiers would be also rdy for Nato ops. Ofc those papers are still under work etc etc. But Finland has trained with Nato now about 20 years so I can sleep my nights pretty well.

Finland and Sweden are very beneficial to NATO and vice versa in my opinion. Finland, Sweden, and NATO as a whole will all get stronger
Regarding the border between Russia and Finland, Finland has closed the border crossings. After the Russians organized refugees who came to Russia from Syria, Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan, to get on to Finland, they gave these refugees bicycles, drove them in trucks to the Russian-Finnish border. It is a way that Putin looks to try to undermine Finland after their NATO entry. It is not unheard of that some refugees are willing to serve the receiving country with the right values while they disapprove their own government's actions. For example, when young men are drafted to fight in a honorless and heinous invasion war against a weaker neighbor in the refugee's own country. I would welcome such fellows, but would keep an eye on them, of course.
It is the work of the immigration officials to find out their real motivation for seeking the asylum. Those who are actually immigrants or criminals should be handled as such.

Two soldiers was elected of Finland and my father was other. He served in Finnish defence forces and he was Major when he retired of RUK Sissi komppania. PS there was accident 1977 in training. Two trainees frose tho dead in Florida swamps.

i can say that Finland is always been a country who takes seriously our international duties.
We do always our best and we are worth of trust in every situation.
Things what Finland brings to Nato are next.
1 Capable armed forces
2 Sotilaskoti which is run by volunteers
3 Cyber security skills
4 Finland is probably only nordic country who educates cyber conscripts
5 Knowledge of our inner water areas and under water infrastructure.
6 Serious commitments to our international duties.
Also i have to mention this
Jaeger Brigade in Sodankylä has trained lot USA soldiers to survive cold weather conditions.
Winters in lapland and especially into arctic-circle can get really cold.
Temparatures in lapland in December, January and February can easily be -30.
And if you don't know how to survive in those situations you're big troubles.
The main reasons why we joined to Nato are next.
1 we know Russians better than anyone else.
2 Russia is absolutely totalitaristic terrorist nation who doesn't respect their neighboring countries at all.
3 Maximising our regional security and protecting our independency.
4 We don't want 1939-1944 events happen ever again.

It's great that Finland got in Nato, but for us it's very important that Sweden also joins Nato. There's is very little reasoning behind not accepting Sweden. Turkey and Hungary (governments) don't have any respect from me. I'm happy that my country is not that corrupt.
