I'm so thankfull for your videos Jonny... i just started with Japanese maple Trees and bought my first one last week. But with all the knowlege of yours i hope i can get them to grow and survive :) I also want to start with growing my own cuttings and just ordered some rooting hormon Keep it going Greetings from germany :)
Thanks for sharing your setup with us, it looks nice and neat which I like. I sort of envy how you can just have your seedling pots and trays out on benches or on the ground. If I were to do this I would lose probably all of my young plants, as we have an ungodly amount of squirrels that climb anywhere they can and depending on the time of year will either 1. Bury their acorns in pots 2. Dig for acorns in pots or 3. Run around severing stems of seedlings. It's enough to give you nightmares if you are a tree gardener....and I haven't even mentioned the deer we get and rabbits, voles, japanese beetles 😱
I do, however, grow Japanese Maples from seed every year or try to. This year I sowed them into seed trays and put on a shelf surrounded by chicken wire (anti squirrel) and right about this time of year they start to burn so I guess I need a shade cloth like you have. After several years of growing dozens to hundreds of Acer p. from seed, I've only gotten around 5 big enough for the landscape.
oh no! there was a white butterfly/ gypsy moth i see you have flying around. check for cutworms! they are my worst pest next to green leaf hopper aphids. and the ants that farm them lol
Jonny, I just dug up a volunteer seedling from under a friend's maple tree this afternoon. I have it in a 2" round pot (very small) for the time being. I'm wondering if you can direct me to the best video you have that might inform me on how best to nurture it (type of soil...pot size...watering frequency...light conditions...etc...I believe I saw such a video of yours dealing with dug up seedlings but I'm having trouble locating it.
Great video Johnny question when do you put your Japanese maples up for sale and how could I get some from you? I’ve been in the business since the mid-70s been route in cuttings forever since my college days but never did Japanese maple so I will be doing that this week. Any recommendations on perennial seeds also
Thanks - I just received certification to ship plants, so look for an announcement soon. I did a video on some of the seeds I started in May, so you may check that out for ideas.

If your spruce cuttings dont do very well, try late winter / early spring cuttings. That has worked well for me with sitka and alberta spruce

I have tried several years to propagate maples. NO luck for me but congratulations on your success.
Thanks.

Hi Johnny. How the winter I’m from Canada I don’t have green house. Thank you 😊
You will likely have to protect them during colder winter months indoors. What USDA zone are in you?
