Would you recommend pruning those lower branches near the base of the tree in the early spring, just as the tree begins to leaf out - or should one wait until leaves have developed to do so?

That was all pretty clear and helpful, but one thing I’m still unsure of is where to make cuts to contain height and width of the tree. On large hardwood trees, if you cut (top) them, you encourage the growth of weak suckers, but that doesn’t seem to be an issue with Japanese maples. I just got a 2 gal Seiryu that I’ll container grow, but will need to keep patio sized. I think I understand root pruning better than top.

Do all Japanese Maples produce seeds each year or does it depend on the maturity of the tree and/or the specific type of maple? I am in the landscape industry and recently became interested in Bonzai. I was trying to see if the Jap Maples of some of my clients would yield free seedlings for me and it seemed like they just plain did not seed.

The method is similar to the method I use for Sarracenia pitcher plants. I moisten a paper towel and wrap the seeds in it in a plastic sandwich bag and put it in my fridge for about a month.

I've always loved plants. Want to grow a dwarf Japanese maple but I've never had one before typically grow carnivorous plants.

Thinking of getting one of these trees. Not sure which one to get, not sure which ones are dwarf.

Was curious if anyone can help me I just planted 6 Japanese maples yesterday They are dormant and we are in New Hampshire They are about 5 to 8 years old and were in the larger 3 and 5 gal pots Ground here is still sift not froze I’m curious if anyone thinks they will come back in the spring ? I assume they will because these are more established I have a few blood good, Crimson, and lace leaf Thoughts anyone?

I was able to root 2 cuttings. Where do I place them during the fall and winter?

The seeds are not genetically identical to the mother tree. How do you call them? Japanese maple only?

Just ordered Sango Kaku and Koto no Ito seeds. Thanks for your advice re outdoor germination. I am in an arid Southwestern climate; private water well was tested 9 years ago . . . higher in sodium content that I would like. Hope you might address water chemistry in a future video. Sango Kaku seemed to adjust more than others.

You are living my dream, Jonny! I get a rush of excitement about setting up my own hoop house and propagating maples. I am heading in that direction, with about a dozen neighbors agreeing to let me harvest their JM seeds. I'll have a couple thousand, and will probably overwinter them in covered tubs/soil outside (we get down to around 0-10degF in in this part of Utah). As an academic geneticist by profession, I can't wait to see the variation that will emerge. I'm sure I'll be tempted to sell some, but discovering that rare beauty is what really motivates me.

great video. I am so excited. I propagate many plants for my Master Gardener chapter but always thought that Japanese Maples were very hard. But you clearly demonstrate that is not true. I am in zone 8 Virginia and want to do a propagation workshop Saturday (October 26) Do you think I will be successful taking cuttings now? We have a misting house so would not need the propagation box. (I have used the box for my home propagations so I know it works!) Thanks you for sharing your experience and time.

I bought the sk5 shears and I have to say I'm pretty disappointed. The blade is incredibly soft for what is supposed to be sk5, I have two knives made from sk5 that are able to chop bone, hammer through nails and pierce sheet metal with minimal if any edge damage and yet these shears suffer edge deformation from cutting the thinnest garden wire available and were able to be repaired with a 2k grit stone way too easily, I really have to question if they have been heat treated at all, I'm tempted to harden the blade myself. I've contacted the seller to try and see what level of hardness they have been treated to (if at all) but I'm not hopeful that information will be readily available.

I cut some Japanese maple and tried to root several cuttings 3 months ago. I thought all of them died because they all dropped their leaves and all but 1 started to shrivel and get brittle. The last one has a green bud forming near the bottom. It is getting in the low 40s at night so I brought it in and I put a grow light on it during the day to give it extra light. When should I transplant it to a pot?
