me an english grad student procrastinating reading 200 pages of lit theory to consume this instead, real literature
I could literally (hahah) be writing a second year uni assignment but no, need to watch this video, it's important rn. High five.
me watching this instead of doing my art history assignment 💀
Couldnt you argue this is art history? @spence3415
are we all artsy ppl? i am pushing off my film studies assignment
8000 words due tomorrow ❤ doing this instead
Uma Thurman’s acting range needs to be studied. Like how does one go from The Bride in Kill Bill to Medusa in Percy Jackson and then to the first female president of the United States that turns Texas blue in RWRB, all in a window of 20 years. Icon. National treasure.
she knows how to display her range
Don’t forget poison ivy
@@camrolls3144 omg how could i forget, her role in 1997 batman is so overshadowed, imo she carried that film but i'm also kinda biased towards her
It's called range, a lot of people's faves don't have that in this day and age so no-one can really clock ms Uma
Not to minimize her talent but, both of her characters are victims. They are similar ranges, different mindsets. All three are dangerous crossed women.
Im pretty sure that everything Alexandria Daddario appears in is specifically colour graded to make her eyes as blue and piercing as possible
honestly no i think her eyes are just like that which i think is way crazier
her in why women kill
damn carley’s going from red white and royal blue to this? girlboss is procrastinating fr

this movie is my number one blind spot…i will defend it with my life idc how much valid criticism it attracts MAYBE I JUST WANNA WATCH LOGAN LERMAN FUCK SHIT UP WITH WATER
honestly a valid take
REAL ASF THIS MOVIE IS SPECIAL TO ME 😭
It’s not a good adaption but the movie is a damn great time
Gotta respect a g who is ride or die for what they love
The movie is a good movie. Heck I think it’s great. But when you think of it as an adaptation… it sucks. It is not a good adaptation but it is a good movie
Common mistake! Those are actually the ‘Peter Johnson’ movies - there are no Percy Jackson movies, but the similar name gets a lot of people confused.
😂😂😂
LMFAOOOOOOO this isn’t gaslighting or a Mandela effect, but a secret third thing
"Wait Percy, you'll need this on your journey."
*Percy receives the Demi-Glock*
seeing rick riordan becoming genuinely incensed whenever someone reminded him of the percy jackson movies was one of the first moments i realised that movies can be bad 💀
I went to a book signing shortly after the movie was released and he was already mad then when he was asked about it. I believe he said he had nothing to do with it and would answer no more questions about it. lol
I gotta say though, the show HE helped work on wasn’t much better. Goes to show a narcissistic author can’t automatically adapt their book onto a screen.
@@ismayonnaiseaninstrument3911is it narcissistic to be upset that the books you created in honor of your kid were adapted badly by people ignoring the notes you gave them to help in improving the script? I imagine everyone would feel differently between seeing themselves do badly with something they created than seeing someone else do badly with something they created. It’s not narcissism, it’s just basic human emotions.
@@CaptainPikeachu oh I definitely think his upset feelings were justified, but the superiority complex he had when adapting the tv show ultimately didn’t even allow him to acknowledge what the movies actually did GOOD, hence why even the most exciting parts of the show, like the lotus casino scene, were lifeless and dull.
@@ismayonnaiseaninstrument3911the show itself is kinda dull ngl
Carley in her "Uma Thurman's top movies" era rn
it's one a.m. where i live and i am SURE i just woke up my neighbours's kids with the pure scream reading this comment
Look, I know it will never happen, but if Carley does Kill Bill to uphold the Uma Thurman cinematic universe collection, I might pass away
Batman & Robin next please
carley saying "kilometers per hour" and mispronouncing nevada just to subtly remind all of us that she's canadian
The kilometers was a jump scare for me lol
... so how do you say Nevada then? Is it like, nuh-vah-duh?,,, like in van/can?
@@sylve2474 yes. and even as an american, i didn’t know that until i moved there
okay but the Lotus Casino scene is what made me fall in love with Lady Gaga. best movie 10/10
YES pokerface for the win
First time I heard Gaga and that is wild
the lotus casino scene in the movie was a thousand times better than the episode in the new show. Sue me but I know I'm right
@@All-ze9cl liking lady gaga montages doesn't make a good movie
@@kairan_gild never said it made the whole movie good. But that scene was so much better than what we got in the show
fun fact: my core memory of this movie is my older brother being so scared of the medusa scene that he broke the CD in half😭
It annoys me what they did to my baby boy Grover. Like in the book he’s an extremely sensitive and nervous kid who hates himself for “letting” Thalia die. It takes him the entire series and a full arc to come into his own and become a leader. Hes so loving and he’s so devoted to his friends that he helps out despite his fear and anxiety, and he’s such a good representation of a genuinely sweet and empathetic guy
But in the movies he’s just. Smooth confident funny guy.
Also he’s meant to be the one who wears the flying converse because Percy isn’t allowed to fly!! Zeus hates him!! He would get killed if he flew, and it’s a big reason why Kronos isn’t revived in the first book. They just completely took everything away from him I hate it
the whole absent parents thing is literally one of the main themes of the book series like the gods being shitty parents is why almost everything happens and the movie was just like… nah
Exactly! Hermes being absent in Luke's life is literally the core reason as to why Kronos was able to target him so easily. If Hermes had been around Luke's mom probably never would've tried to become the oracle and go insane, he would be raised by two loving and attentive parents, know he's a demigod and how to defend himself, not run away from home at 9 and be alone for 3 year before meeting 2 other traumatized runaways and almost dying dozens of times, not have resented the gods nearly as much, and overall have been a happy kid while some other poor child was targeted by Kronos because the gods suck as parents. The movies really said none of that's important though and left it all out along with any other important information, scenes and plot points like oh I don't know ARES?! Ares was such a big part of the books and the movies just cut him out completely and replaced him with the most unimportant stuff!
Was there like, NO budget left for them to make a bunch of orange Camp Half Blood shirts for this movie? Also, what this movie did to Annabeth is HEINOUS. In the books/show Annabeth is the daughter of Athena in the sense that she’s very strategic, but THIS Annabeth is basically “what if clarisse was the girl in the group instead of Annabeth”
My favorite category of UA-cam video is unhinged girlies talking about nonessential topics. This, this is that, and I'm here for it.
Amen 👏
Same! Have any good recs of unhinged girlies?
what do you mean?! percy jackson movie is absolutely an essential topic. it's about time someone brave enough spoke up about it. (mild sarcasm lol)

my 11 year old brother has ADHD and Dyslexia and percy is such a big influence on how he sees his disabilities, he's convinced he's a demigod
He is tho…
lol did he watch the show my 12 yo cousin with adhd did and loved it
That’s so wholesome!!
And that's why representation is important, folks
my favorite fun fact is that the actress who plays Annabeth is the sister of the guy who plays Alec in the Shadowhunters tv show...like everything is connected in theese awful live action remakes of popular ya fantasy books, and I love it!
New multiverse unlocked
what's that thing luke says before they set off? it's like "if you see my dad on the highway to hell, kick his ass for me" and then the movie starts blaring Highway to Hell. That moment is all I remember from this movie and it lives in my brain rent free
i actually just need to say that i’m pretty sure they did not CGI alexandra dadd arios eyes… i think she just genuinely looks like that…. she has the most intense eyes i’ve ever seen
that picture of carey mulligan and michelle williams with carley's face in between was a literal jumpscare coz for a moment i couldn't tell the 3 apart.
his degree: cinematography
his job: geese
"Having Percy be dyslexia so he can read ancient Greece" 38:53 . I live
My hottest trait is that I have never seen this movie before so I got to dodge the trauma everyone else experienced
yessss
As a book adaptation this movie is horrendous… but as a stand-alone movie it definitely has some fun moments lmao
There is nothing I love more than having Carley re-cap/re-tell unhinged scenes and plot points from books or movies. If there was a way I could have a Carley Retelling of every piece of media I have ever consumed in my life, I would pay real life money for that
uncarley: “here’s a rehash analysis of a fourteen year old movie that nobody asked for at all and upon watching will have no impact on your life whatsoever”
me: “thank fucking god”
The books actually do discuss that trauma and neglectful parenting, they’re very introspective, but also just a fun time, each book kind of advancing in theme - this movie made the author put out a point by point memo of everything this movie messed up and did to disrespect his series basically - at the end of the day, it was truly entertainment, the second movie is off the walls, plot not found, but so camp
Fun fact: Brie Larson revealed in a UA-cam video a few years back that she read for the role of Annabeth in The Lightning Thief movie. Most likely, the version of the script that she read was one where the characters were aged up even more to 18
Alexandra Daddario is 3 years older than Brie Larson, lol. She was fully 24 when she played Annabeth.
This movie came out the same year as Scott Pilgrim vs the world, she looked much younger then so they wouldn’t have needed to age it up even more. She is also younger than Alexandra Daddario lol
The worst movie ever is and will always be the avatar one that is so painful and percy jackson is a close second
Aw man sick that they made a real life adaptation of avatar, never heard of it before! I bet the special effects were great and the casting was ethnically appropriate
@@clarimm6675😂
at least the percy movie is entertainingly bad😭
I remember one time in my German class I heard my friend ask the teacher how to say ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief is my favourite movie’ and I just turned around to judge him
Btw it's "Percy Jackson: Diebe im Olymp" which literally translates to "thieves in olympus", no mention of the lightning bolt whatsoever for some reason
Apparently Chris Columbus, the director, wanted to basically make his own movie and didn't really give a shit about making a faithful adaptation. He had a similar desire when making another pair of adaptions, but the author of that series had much greater creative control than Rick did. And what do you know? The movies were good and faithful adaptations.
Edit: I'm surprised that you didn't mention that Percy's reaction to his mom, the woman who's shown him nothing but love and kindness and care, made him seem as upset as realizing he got a question wrong on a test.
Wait, Chris Columbus who did the HP movies also did these? I never knew omg but yeah it's always a telltale sign if the creator of a story doesn't want to be involved in it's adaptation (i.e. Percy Jackson, ATLA)
I made my brother, who has ZERO knowledge of or interest in Percy Jackson, watch Sea of Monsters simply because I wanted him to see just HOW bad that movie is. He was genuinely horrified
“spoiler alert for mythology” HDKSKHDG
Oh god I’m having mixed emotions. My girlfriend( past away 2022) loved PJO books so much and hated this movie so much. She convinced me to watch the movie with her because I never got into the series as and she said I would appreciate the books more if I saw how awful the movie was. We got through maybe a half hour before she couldn’t take it anymore and just shut it off. She felt like it was poison to her eyes. For person all reasons, I got rid of my Disney plus account, but I’m glad the live action show is good. She would have loved it and I would be right beside her. Happy that she was happy.
i'm so sorry for your loss
@@imnotmattyhealy I appreciate that. It’s been hard for the last 2 years but I can say now I’m at a much better point but I’m still working through stuff.
Sorry for your loss 🖤
not carley discovering a niche of book to movie adaptations where uma thurman randomly shows up and you inevitably go THATS UMA THURMAN
the only good things about the movies:
1. some of the actors
2. a handful of lines- i.e. “don’t walk on my roof”
3. you making a video on them
as a very avid Percy reader who has only watched this movie once (and was horrified at how bad of an adaptation it was), i feel like i’m witnessing this adaptation for the first time ever bc i completely pushed the entire movie out of my brain
If we are discussing TERRIBLE film adaptations of books then we need to bring Eragon to the table because what was that
Waiting also for a mention of the absolutely ruthless letter that rick wrote to the writers / producers of this movie about how TERRIBLe the script is
Oh gosh, yes
Is this movie a terrible disgrace to Riordan's original books? Yes. Is it objectively not good? Yes. Is it fun tho.... Honestly yeah.
Now the second movie..... That's a different story.
The fact that you kinda look like Carrie Mullegan AND Michelle Williams is peak comedy
the way people defend this movie so hard, JUST because a black girl ia now playing Annabeth is so😭😭
Nah, here are the 3 real worst teen movies:
1) Avatar the Last Airbender (M Night Shyamalan version obviously)
2) Eragon. PLEASE DO A VIDEO ON THE ERAGON MOVIE.
3) The Golden Compass adaptation. Although what might be fun is to watch the His Dark Materials tv show (its on Crave, fellow Canadian) and compare the 3 seasons of the show to the movie. Cause the show is really good honestly.
Oh god the Eragon movie... So much potential wasted 😭
God the Eragon movie hurts me so much, it was god awful
Please please do a video on ERAGORN!!!
I loved the first two seasons of His Dark Materials but personally felt that the third season really lost its way
@@zoestaggs5605 I guess I technically agree with you but only in the sense that the third book lost its way. So I think the final season matches the final book.
Idk for sure but going off other moments in the riordanverse, the reason Percy passes out for so long is because it’s the first time he actually uses his powers for something other than Hold Breath Long Time so it’s a massive drain on him
One thing I always hated about the books and movie was how medusa was just seen as evil, when in real mythology she was just pissed at the gods because she was assaulted by Poseidon on Athenas altar and she begged Athena to help her but she was so angry at Medusa for “defiling her sacred place” she cursed HER and made sure no one could ever witness her beauty again, in some myths She took pity on her and made it so she could only turn men into stone so they could never hurt her again but she was the OG victim blame story- the new TV show kind of hinted at it but even then Annabeth said she was cursed (showing she believed in the assault story and still blamed medusa) and medusa saw it as the gift story
In th books th relationship btw her n poseidon was consensual tho, w/ her saying she felt flattered to have attracted th interest of a god as powerful as poseidon, as explained in 'pj n th greeks gods'. Btw, this version of th myth was written by th roman poet ovid in his 'metamorphoses'; throughout all greek mythological history before him, medusa has alw been a monster frm birth
I hate this movie with a kind of burning seething passion that I talked to my therapist about it
You absolutely loved the word “sequestered” in this video 💀
‘sequestered’ and ‘truly’ 😭 burst out laughing whenever she said those words
no but it makes sense Zeus would be jealous he was such a drama queen 😭
Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and the Hunger Games fans: We got a decent movie incarnation of our favourite books. Not absolutely accurate but good.
Divergent and Percy Jackson fans in the corner listening to Poker Face and crying.
At least we have a show that’s a faithful adaptation, divergent on the other hand…
Carley pretending she thinks roulette is called blackjack is bait, and here I am taking it.
The sick thing is the actress that plays Annabeth has those white walker eyes naturally, it’s insane (and gorgeous)
Okay but Carley have you read Rick Riordan’s response to the movie 👀 he literally went scene by scene talking about how bad it is and it’s so funny 😭
I'm sure someone already said it but, Alexandra's eyes are actually huge and blue-gray (and vivid blue in different lights) in fact her eyes are so wild every producer and cast director kinda makes them a focal point somewhere sometimes, I'm almost sure I remember vividly a comment about her eyes in the 1st season of Why women kill 😂
"Nevertheless, I digress" daaaamn carley spittin bars
I hope uncarly makes a movie about the sequel! I was so disappointed when i saw it in theaters
Are the Percy Jackson movies the worst? Yes
Are they incredibly camp and still make me laugh to this day? Also yes
Fantastic vid bestie
absolutely it is peak entertainment
my most controversial opinion is that the movies are more * fun * than the show, even if they're really bad as a percy jackson adaptation

I laughed so hard at "Rick Ridorian". Carley never change
the one impression this movie made on me is that I now always imagine Kevin McKidd (Owen from Grey's Anatomy) as Poseidon.
Ikr?! Particularly so for me as I had a major crush on him (really his character in Grey's Anatomy) at time...I literally screamed the moment I saw his face in the movie in the beginning lol Thanks for reminding me, such great memories

I've been re reading the books for the last couple weeks and the disservice that this movie and the sequel did to the books is insane, like they took all of Percy's characterization from the books and threw it out the window it's so frustrating and it makes me so sad because he's such a badass character and so empowering for kids who have ADHD and dyslexia
I hate commenting on my own comment but oh dear lord the further I get into this video the more painful this becomes because like I haven't seen the movie since it came out I don't know how many years ago but it's so bad this is so bad I could actually cry I think
Actually, yes, if I remember the books correctly (I also haven't read them in a while, so I'm probably forgetting something), Luke was much more defined by his daddy issues. And also by mommy issues, but I won't comment on it too much because spoilers.
In fact, I remember at the end of the series, the gods were called out for being bad parents and for indirectly causing a lot of the problems of the series.
As a huge HUGE percy jackson fan and of the show and of YOU this is my Super Bowl i got my cigarette i got my chicken curry and my birthday candles (not my birthday) IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS LETS GOOOO

Hyperbole < Hyperbully
its so funny cause when youre like "seeing some aspect of this would have been more interesting" cause its in the books 😭 the kids having absent parents is the point of the whole book series lmao
I was really hyped for this movie coming out, and my first sign of it being a trainwreck was in one of those Scholastic Scope magazines where they listed character parts for acting out a scene and Luke was listed as a son of Ares.

People that complain and compare this movie and the show and say it was better truly forgot how heavy-handed the dialogue and exposition were in the movie. The plot was dumbed down and changed around, many nuances and character development were lost, especially for Annabeth. Which is why I think at least the show showed much more of the character developments, like Percy's perspective of growing up with a single mom, the greek gods being really bad absent parents (the movie kept acting like they were actually nice), and Percy's hero's journey with the gods,
I'm OBSESSED with bestie Carley's full hour long descriptions, BEST
I love how Carley can’t tell Michelle Williams and Carey Mulligan apart, and she looks exactly like them 😂 I couldn’t tell if that was a bit or not when those photos went up haha!
I feel like the next one you do should be the Eragon movie. I think we collectively have wiped that one from our memories, and it needs to be examined.
Truthfully, Percy Jackson, Eragon, and the Alex Rider movie all decided ‘mmm, we’ll just put a handsome teen as our main character, and then nothing else matters, right??’. Justice for the authors that had cool ideas and saw it absolutely decimated in movie form
Ooooooh the aging up in the movie made me SO MAD like the whole arc of the series hinged on the prophecy that would come true when Percy turned 16… and in the movies he’s casually driving and so presumably already 16. And for what!!!
As an American without a passport i really do start crying everytime she announces a new movie screening. These are all movies i seen in the theaters with my sister and did a midnight showings for, by time hunger games came out no more midnight showings. The way this script writer didn’t read the book at all. As a Rick Rior-fan this movie hurt me. So bad. Killed me
The lotus is actually a reference to the lotus eaters in the Odyssey, who lived on an island dominated by lotus flowers and grew addicted, losing track of time and their identities. It’s quite clever the writers created a parallel between gambling addiction and the greek mythology of the lotus eaters
that’s all Rick riordan. give my man some credit. uncle rick is an icon.
The writers? Of the movie? No… it was the dude who wrote the book lol
sorry lmfao i don’t know much about this series!
When I heard they were remaking Lighting Theif I recovered a lost memory of Rick Riordan coming to my middle school on a book tour. I think he read an exerpt and sold copies of the book? I didn't buy one/never read the book/never watched the movie... But he seemed nice lol.
I confused Logan Lerman with Aaron Taylor Johnson for a while, when he was younger during Kickass years. Logan was like a softened version of Aaron to me.
I actually think Pierce Brosnan as Chiron and Stanley Tucci as Mr. D from Sea of Monsters are absolutely spot on casting, even better than what we had in the show, and it’s a shame that the movies they were in were so bad
I agree!! Like the show was amazing but Chiron and Mr D’s casting kinda missed the mark

Annoying little correction from a Nashville native- there's a Parthenon replica, not Pantheon. The Pantheon is (deceptively) actually in Italy. The Parthenon is the ancient Greek temple in Athens. Nashville was nicknamed "the Athens of the South" so for its centennial celebration, they built a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon. Kind of insane actually. The life-size replica of the Athena statue inside scared the shit out of me as a kid bc it's just a massive gold woman.
