Maroof (MMSK786) I feel like as soon as brawl came around they would had to drop the feature due to the sheer number of characters, unless they recycle the victory animations
Possibly, but with the current 8 Player Smash mode in Smash 4 it makes more sense to cut it altogether since Sakurai wanted 8 players to be a thing since Melee.
This would've been a nice thing to see (even if the original N64 game did it itself), but wouldn't the game have to load each character, slowing it down? I guess they could've done what F-Zero GX did on the profiles, showing a still image then fading to the model or something. Of course, if it was implemented, Brawl would've made it worse with even longer load times...
it was a real bitch when i tried to play smash late at night. *picks mario* yeah time to-"hErE WE g0O!!" yep that ended up with me getting my wii taken during weeknights
I like how since it was cut out half way through development, and Ganondorf was a last minute shoe in, he and Falcos animations were worked on the least and just consists of them posing while blinking.
He puts the sword in on the same side as Marth, despite the sheath behind opposite of Marth's. It's the same animation, it just worked better with one than the other
A lot of these look kind of unnatural or have significant clipping issues, probably because they were abandoned somewhat early in their development in all likelihood (the devs probably didn't start working on them until all of the characters were put into the game, and by that time they would have had virtually no time to complete them). It would be interesting to see if they could be modified to look better and implemented in a mod of some sort.
I think that some of the newcomers in melee that were planned for 64 are using their very early animations from the beta of smash 64 (even though their models may have been removed)
@@capacitiveguitarresistance The only one that was planned to be in 64 but got put into Melee was Mewtwo. We actually have conflicting stories if Marth or Pit was to be added in 64 and the other characters wouldn´t even be considered until Brawl(DDD and Wario). It most likely seems that a few characters were picked in the First Stage of Development and were worked on alongside the Veterans. And even some Veterans seem incomplete, as Fox and DK don't really finish their idle animations, so they might have been reworked mid development.
Roy's Selected animation is nearly identical to one of Marth's victory poses; the way they wear the hilt (and in consequence, how the sword ends up) gives it away. EDIT: Nearly. Marth doesn't rest his right arm on his hip.
Why wasn't this kept for future installments...? Why? It would make the CSS feel more "alive". Plus, with the ability to rotate the CSS with the C-Stick in Melee and Brawl...
NEOC - It was probably due to time constraints and hardware limitations. I mean think about it: the game would have to load all of that for 26 or 25 characters, they would also have to get them working for color pallets, and all that would have cause too many framerate issues, plus it could have been too much for the Gamecube to handle.
I feel like making the CSS load as fast as possible is probably the priority. Given that Ultimate's CSS can't even load costumes for like 10 seconds I feel like fancy animations would bog it down even further
I love this so much! I really miss it when Smash a, had those character select animations, and b, how Brawl had those crunchy-sounding character select sounds that played through the Wii remote.
I think this was MashedPotato Samurai playing around with the idea of giving each character an animation like in 64, but probably due to time constraints (or just not liking how it looked on the CSS) he removed them.
some of them aren't even victory animations tho, such as Kirby's or Marth's. furthermore, there's an odd idling animation after their selected animation, similar to how characters have an idling animation after their victory pose in Brawl and Smash 4, rather than freeze in that pose
How are there still being things discovered a decade and a half after launch?! You would think absolutely EVERYTHING would've been datamined years ago!
It's rather upsetting that your video editor wasn't working properly, but I must say! These animations are an amazing find; it really makes me wonder what all else is hiding in "there." Despite not looking very polished, it's great to see them 'back.'
Well isn't that interesting. and to think, Melee's ISO has been hacked and looked through countless times and these are only now being found! It's interesting to note that a few of these Animations are very similar to some of the Victory animations (Mario & Dr. Mario are a perfect example of this) it's odd that these would be removed in favor of character portraits, but I suppose that when you have a limmited development period, some sacrifices need to be made.
@@kaurii_3586 It's not fake. The reason it looks fake is because the models never show up in the character select, so a mock-up was made in a video editor to show what it might have looked like. Besides that, the animations themselves are real.
Kirby’s looks the best. The characters actually moving and not just freezing is cool. It makes sense. They didn’t use these and instead made them the victory animations. It totally works.
This is absolutely amazing. If the time constraints weren't as bad as they were, this game could have been so much better. But then, what would be the cost?
I like the fact that Roy's blade goes to the back of his model, which is consistent with the appearances of him with his Binding Blade in its scabbard.
There are so many reasons this could have been cut from the game. It would be amazing to see fans restore this feature, though! Please keep us updated on this. And out of curiosity, how do the special characters like Giga Bowser appear on this?
I imagine that changing texture and having multiple characters and animations be able to load and change rapidly that it could be laggy on the GameCube. Or perhaps a lack of production time to finalise all animations and integrate it properly. If you can find a way to make it boot on actual GameCube hardware and look good that'd be pretty rad.

its also to note that these animations are the victory poses however in melee after the character's victory screen the character who wins freezes in place most of these don't so we kinda discovered 2 animations its easy to notice with luigi btw
You can tell that some models aren't fully animated, like Young Link, or how some are missing textures or polygons, like Yoshi. My best guess is that this was scrapped at some point, and they just used static pictures instead.
3:06 reminds me of my failed attempts to install Dual Sheath Redux into Skyrim; weapons just fly into the wrong areas when sheathing them lol That "hey baby" look Roy has with the squinted eyes kills me tho lmao
The interesting part is that this seems to imply the order of selection of the characters. Of the original Twelve, only Fox and DK had clear issues in their animations, which seems to be because their models and bones were not adapted properly to the animations, which also means that they were reworked. It also seems that Mario has finishing problems. Either Mario was to have Dr's moveset and they swapped mid development or Mario was planned to have more changes. You can also see which newcomers where picked and developed very early on. Of all the clones, only Dr. Mario seems "complete" and all the other ones bug out, again, not caring about these cut animations and just redoing the models, so they mess up. Of the original newcomers, only Game and Watch, the Fire Emblem dudes and Zelda are not properly finished, even though their animations work properly(the Swordies have weird issues in the animation so maybe they were reworked quite a lot; makes me wonder if they actually went with the Leif + Marth idea until somewhere in mid development and then had to rework both Marth and the then new Roy a number of times; a clipping issue with Zelda and no flattening on GW model), so maybe they were scrapped pretty late in development????? Also new to Melee is the fact they have a Idle animation. Unique since in 64, they froze in place, just like Victory Poses in Melee.
It looks like most of the 64 characters have both animations complete with a few exceptions. Zelda, Pichu, Doc, Peach, and Mewtwo look pretty finished. Bowser has a bit of a weird one, and only one of the Icies are animated. Roy's sword just looks off. Young Link and Marth have completely broken ones.
