- Kingfish are amazing table fish. In this video, we teach you how to catch yellowtail kingfish using topwater methods and baiting on circle hooks.
In the 1900’s commercial fishermen used to trap kingfish in large floating kingfish traps, this was officially banned in new south whales in 1996. The populations were near wiped out. Since then, stock numbers have been coming back in healthy numbers; Which brings us to Tasmania.
Tasmania and its cool climate don’t seem to hold stock for long, but this year it looks like we’re shaping up for a good season; with some bigger models amongst them. Most yellowtail kingfish caught in Tassie are known as Rat Kingfish. They’re incredibly fun to catch, still fight very hard pound for pound, and make for an incredible meal.
They're elusive and frustrating, but incredibly exhilarating when you know they’re nearby. In this episode, we were spoilt. Stay tuned, because we’re sharing just how we’ve managed to secure a few beautiful models for the dinner table.

Brilliant...which part of tassie were you catching these beauties.
Hey mate! East coast. I say the township we launched from in the video :) thanks for watching!
Going out triabunna this weekend and next week, what lures do you suggest? And how long to spend on one spot?
Hey mate! The smaller Laser pro’s are great. I go through a few options towards the end of this video :)
Amazing. You think is that possible catch some land based on the shore?
100%, I’d look for any land based spots with some nice ledges and drop-offs. It’s a matter of time until a school cruises past.
These were caught in 6-12m deep.
@@TascastFishing Cool, I’m going to find a time to give it a go, thanks for sharing

45cm mate we only get rats
Amazing video extremely jealous
I’ve been trying for the past 4years
I’ve brought all the gear and lure poppers, stickbbaits ,jerk shads I’ve tried everything and I just can’t find any fish
I’ve tried of the kayaks in north west bay I’ve tried multiple places in the Derwent I’ve tried George’s bay and many other places I. St Hellen’s and I just can’t find them
They’re so illusive. Your best bet is Triabunna at the moment.
Burley is your friend!
Tuna are running up around Burnie and Wynyard at the moment
That’s epic! Looks like the weather isn’t too nice over the next few days though :(
