  • Even though I don't always like to admit it, there are probably few bands that have meant more to me as a songwriter than Blink 182. So, how do I feel about Tom Delonge being back, and the new album One More Time? Or... in other words: Should Blink 182 have reunited again?
Well.. watch the video and you'll see my attempt at answering that question.
Actually, maybe I never got around to talking about how I personally feel about it.
    Oh well.

To sum up this video in one sentence: There's a difference between feeling entitled to your favorite band doing A vs. how you feel about A happening. The internet can be bad at acknowledging this. Have a good day everyone!

This is a super interesting topic to me, not only for music but also for books, movies, etc. I always think that the artist is the only one with a say on what path to take, what motivates them, and what keeps them going. If you've been doing something for many years, and you keep doing the same thing, it just gets boring, and you won't want to continue.
As fans, we also have the right to say, 'I don't connect with any of this,' or 'I don't like this,' or 'I liked the previous song/album a lot more than this.' But to extrapolate that to 'They made a mistake,' 'They're not being loyal to the fanbase,' or 'They should have done this or that,' that's when it bothers me. It's okay to have an opinion and to criticize a piece of art, but to think we should have a say in an artist's path is horrendous.
For example, in fiction books, it is common to criticize artists because they talk about and promote violence or unhealthy relationships, etc., and fans demand that they address or order them to change their path on that. When, in reality, it's just a story. You always have the option to not consume the art... Why do we need to feel entitled to demand only what we want in a piece of art that was never ours to begin with?
    End of rant 😅

So well said! Couldn't agree more. Great to see you completely got it too.
Also, about your book example: Are people incapable of being challenged today, or dealing with things that make them uncomfortable? Isn't that the value and importance of art?
And if you can't handle it, don't engage with it. Like you say. Don't demand the world to change accoring to your taste and sensitivity.

You're not wrong at all. No one has any right to control the lives of others.
Anyone who even remotely implies otherwise is someone I would definitely avoid.

Me too! It's a very strange entitlement. Enjoy their art, or don't! Thanks for the thoughtful comment. Have a great day!

I have always considered it up to the artist to do whatever they choose but it hasn't stopped me from being very disappointed at times over some changes of direction. That said, a change in direction has also allowed me to connect with artists that I previously had no interest in so it's swings and roundabouts really. Not really any of my business at the end of the day.

Couldn't agree more! We are free to choose if we want to engage with the art and to what extent.

I thought I was going to hate this video for the very reason of what you point out in it. Great perspective (and scenery)! I sometimes feel that way about Eminem, admittedly. His music was more authentic, raw, and catchy when he was young, hungry to prove himself, angry at the world, and on drugs. He has since found peace and become sober, but I sometimes wish he could feel that anger again to produce more of those amazing songs.

Hi! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment, and for giving it a chance!
You know what, now that you mention it, I think I have too. At times where I felt like I really wanted that angry Eminem energy in my life.

To be honest I don't think Blink 182 should have reunited just because I think their newer stuff is pretty sub par or just plain embarrassing (I'm talking about edging) and I think their style of pop punk really is a young man's game, so it's weird seeing a bunch of middle aged guys playing songs like "What's My Age Again", and "Dammit". If they tried to maybe adapt their sound to fit where they are in time, I'd get it it, but to me it sounds like they've been trying to recapture their Take Your Pants Off/Enema Days which I don't think ever works.
But it's like you said, I have absolutely nothing to do with what Blink does and nor should I, and some people are super happy to see them still going, and I think that in itself is perhaps a good enough reason for them to still be around despite my personal grievances.

I completely get what you're saying, and it makes me curious.. how do you feel about The Stones still being out there playing songs like Start Me Up? Haha.
P.S. For the record I thought Edging was really mediocre.
