Based on the best-selling book series by highly-acclaimed author Stephen King. The last Gunslinger, Roland (Idris Elba), has been locked in an eternal battle with the Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey), determined to prevent him from toppling the Dark Tower, which holds the universe together. With the fate of the worlds at stake, good and evil will collide in the epic battle as only Roland can defend the Tower from the Man in Black.
This movie is like if they had done the LOTR in one film, cut out most of the fellowship, and make Saruman the main villain.
LOL.
I have not read the books this movie try to portray, but I was so disappointed about the movie as it felt like 80% was missing from it, because they wanted something else.
But if that analogy is true, then..... No wonder this movie is horrible.
@@paristo It's supposed to be a sequel to the series, with enough changes to make one wonder if there's more than one Roland, this one from a different layer of the DT multiverse, as the kid would be Jake 3 or 4... Supposedly the worlds "reset" when Original Roland somehow screwed up and failed his quest, so maybe this was the end of a different Roland's quest... And I'm guessing that the writers assumed that just about everyone watching the movie had read the whole series, and would get the idea that this came after, without actually thinking about the others who either didn't know this was supposed to be a sequel or hadn't read the whole DT series, and/or expected the book(s) in movie form.
Corporations don't care about taking risk, honoring source material, and making more money in the long run. Studios would rather make quick money and profit off of existing work. Did you know they originally wanted to make LOTR one movie? The Dark Tower should have been made into a mini series.
Even without that there’s countless issues
But it’s pathological, exec influence, must get their whims and ideologies across even if it then doesn’t pay well
I'm on the second third book but took a break to read I Heard You Paint Houses. I heard they are doing a show the director will be the guy who did Fall of The House of Usher, Midnight Club and Midnight Mass on Netflix. Might actually get something great from him.
I like how they made his gunshots sound really metallic, like the hammer is striking so hard it makes a small "CLONK!" sound every time he shoots because he has fantasy-guns that shoot regular bullets extra hard.
literally though. didn't they say those guns were forged from his world's Excalibur?
Those guns were forged from the Adamantine blade of that world’s version of Excalibur. When they shoot, it’s basically like firing off a cannon. I think I remember Roland saying something about how they never miss if the welders intent is honorable.
@@TheCorrodedManIs it also the reason why the guys voice doesn’t work against him maybe? Seems plausible that Excalibur might have also offered some protection from magic.
@@deantaylor5614 that bit is hard to know, since Flagg never demonstrated any “voice” abilities in the books: Roland’s guns just wouldn’t fire when he aimed them his way, even if they were fully loaded.
in the books every time Roland fired his guns it was described as a thundering roar. I have always imagined them sounding like a 50 cal with every shot
Fun fact: Idris Elba actually improvised the ricochet scene; he just thought it would be way cooler to bounce the bullets off each other.
Right call.
How can he improvise visual effects?
@@didieranastaseleon8146 Im embarassed for you 🤦🏽♂️

It’s okay. Stephen king thinks the shining movie is shiet. Sooooo it just goes to show nothing will ever make him happy except the ending of the mist movie
I believe the only way to do justice to the book series is like they did the Harry Potter movies but I don't know if there would have been enough interest for 8 books

This happens after the books so I didn’t mind it that much. It could have been more for sure and it could have sure used an extra 30 minutes
if you’ve read all 7 books, (SPOILER ALERT) you learn that Roland has always been the protector of the Tower, he just never remembers his past ‘lives’. I liked this movie, and tend to think that while this only minimally lines up with the novels, this is one the many different iterations of him protecting the Tower and all of existence.
You absolutely nailed it with this explanation. Love the novels, comics, and all the wonderful tie in's to the Dark Tower itself throughout kings work. I will say, that they missed a golden opportunity to properly introduce The Man in Black as the Walking Dude though. Matthew's swagger is so right for the roll. Idris as Roland was/is a brilliant casting choice, I was curios to see if they would introduce some crippled old white lady as Detta and some young kid from Co Op city as Eddie...Just mentioning their names makes me want to read it all over again...
He has the horn, after all
@@shadowsonge Exactly. He's carrying the Horn of Eld, which means it's a sequel to the books. So the movie's story is yet another life protecting the Tower that Roland will once again forget, and we all say thankee.
You know what they say: "Multiverse theory is a bitch."

First movie I've seen with Idris Elba and I fell in love with that actor.
30 years I read this series this movie is a joke to anyone who actually read the Dark Tower series... No Eddie, No Oy, No Susannah, hell they even wrote Steven king out of his own story...
I was really hoping they would do it justice, more of a loseley based
With all due respect, my dude…every installment in that series following Wizard and Glass was also a joke to the series. When I reached the finale with the Crimson King, I didn’t know whether to laugh or to cry.
I love the series and have been through it about 3 times. I totally get why a lot of people think the same you do. With that being said, this movie is ok for a popcorn movie, but man it doesn't come close to capturing the series at all. Despite the complaints about King's endings on a lot of things the man can world build. There is a lot of rich lore and material where even though it SHOULD be a long movie series, they would have done it more justice making it a trilogy and not omitting so many things trying to compress everything into one movie.
@@markliddell8944 You’re absolutely on point, and I couldn’t agree with you more. IMO, I think the best way that they could have adapted King’s Dark Tower opus to the screen would have been to begin with Roland’s past as narrated through Wizard and Glass, since there’s so much lore bound within Gunslinger that unfamiliar audiences would be lost from the start. W&G would be perfect for a standalone film, and give the producers an idea as to whether additional projects could do well going forward. I don’t think the actual events that elapsed throughout Dark Tower (directly to the ka-tet, as it were) have a wealth of potential for a television series, rather than cinematically.
On an unrelated note, it’s incredibly refreshing to reference “ka-tet” in a UA-cam comment while knowing that there are still plenty of people out there who appreciate what it means.
@@RoseCatMariner ka-tet!😁
I don’t understand how getting hit by a bus would make a fall from a ten story building survivable.
Never mind, I kept watching and saw Mathew pick up rocks with his mind, we clearly aren’t fallowing the laws of physics with this one.
@@Zurtle1 lol I was going to say but they do make a point of saying Roland is tougher than pretty much any normal dude
He used Rorschach as a Taheen shield.
Physics.
If you want to survive from something hitting hard, you need to slow down as much as possible the time it takes to stop.
This is example what airbags does in cars, they slow down the energy transfer from moving human body to stationary car.
The kinetic energy that human body has as a mass, is way greater than the bus glass windshield and it holding support beams. So human body goes through, and windshield in exchange slow down the impact.
Of course human body bones would go likely pieces, but you would have change of survive.
This has happened in reality too.
Couple times a human has fallen from airliner incident, without parachute. IIRC one was from 10 km altitude when stuart lost conscious and drop on pine trees, that branches slowed down the impact on ground.
The other was soldier that fell about 7 km and hit the hill snow slope that slowed down the impact.
The women IIRC wanted to get back to work, but airline declined because she was famous and her political views as activist were unacceptable for the airline.
This is as well in case with the bullets impacting the human body. A bullet that fly through is not as effective as one that stops inside the body. Because the energy is the factor that matters, and bullet that fly through has more energy left in it, than bullet that stops as energy it has, is been released to the body.
This is as well why getting hit when wearing bullet proof vest is not causing any impact that would throw person around, as the vest slows down the bullet slowly, and it is transferred to way that spread energy to larger area.
But this is still vests that has something hard, instead just couple layers of fabric that is loose, and can be penetrated in body.
Minus x minus = bonus
Because the second bullet bounced off something and still traveled faster than the first
I think the first bullet was being stopped, before the black clad man would catch it, thus it ended up travelling slowly.

Dark Tower isn't a summer 90min action movie. It's a TV show with lots of exposition and at least 10 seasons.
The little “anti bullet Jazz-hands dance” that the the BBEG does in this scene 4:40 never fails to make me laugh at this showdown. Was one of the only smiles I cracked in this entire movie.

I really want to see Idris Elba play the next 007 James Bond. I know he’s a bit older and the next 007 will most likely be someone a bit younger but I’ve always looked at Idris Elba as someone who deserves to play James Bond. I personally think he would be a absolute badass 007.
I'd pay too see that too. Lol the older Bonds going back to Moore & Connery at the time were almost embrassingly too old. Timothy Dalton did a good example of a younger bond in The Living Daylights and License to Kill. Outside of that, Daniel Craig is a solid Bond, but for how long ?
He's black😊. You forgot
@@MarvNARK color of his skin has nothing to do with it.

That whole, "Oh it's just a designation, the race doesn't matter", excuse is bulls***. Idris even said so himself that 007 should stay a white man. Maybe he could be like 006 or some crap but not 007/James Bond. Henry Cavill is the perfect choice and should've been bond a long time ago but unfortunately he was too young in 2005 when he first auditioned. Even the Casino Royale director said so recently regarding Cavill.
@@Night_Bandit all I’m saying is that I think Idris Elba would make a badass Bond. Never could figure out how the second bullet caught up with the first 😂😂
I have thought of this question many times and ironically it was only seeing someone else ask it that caused my brain to tell me the only reasonable and if I am being honest obvious answer.
The sorcerer demonstrates the ability to manipulate the motion of objects and is observed catching multiple bullets rapidly, he then returns the bullets at nearly the speed they would be fired from a gun.
The logical conclusion is that the sorcerer slows down the bullets in order to catch them.
The first bullet which was fired directly at him was slowing down in order to be caught when the second bullet was fired and ricocheted at nearly full speed in order to strike the first bullet and redirect it to hit him in the chest with a portion of the second bullet's momentum to give it back some of the penetrating power it lost from being slowed down.
This also explains why the first bullet having struck him in the heart was not a lethal wound but merely caused enough pain to prevent him focusing his powers on the following bullets.
So in summation part of the slow motion was an actual effect caused by the sorcerer which gave him time to take a second shot while the first was still in the air.
Your explanation makes perfect sense and is also way more well thought out than anything in the movie, haha@@nicholaskehler9169
The simplest explanation was that the first bullet was an angled shot and Roland times the second, more direct shot but the editor effed up and got the order wrong.
@@nicholaskehler9169 cool theory but the sorceror would've seen and slowed the second one too :(.
@@cend2362 Why it was a missed shot from a badly crippled opponent and he was a cocky a-hole.
The second bullet came in from the side after ricocheting while he was focused on catching the one in front of him probably deciding where to return it to cause the most pain without killing.
My guess is he was trying to calculate how much force to return it with to take out an eye without penetrating to the brain as he had already pierced both hands.

I had no idea that the same architect designed the Dark Tower _and_ the Death Star (both have one-shot fatal weaknesses)
It sucks but I think this was the best film we could have gotten - this is the kind of movie you make when you're 100% sure you won't get a second or third outing. If they had done it like Dune and confirmed a trilogy, then perhaps we could have gotten something closer to King's vision. Hell, even the books started to meander a bit towards books VI and VII, now that I think about it.

He is a warlock or something. He is still allive...
7:22 I'm sorry, but how the hell did that second bullet catch up with the first one?
movie physics
Gunslinger, it's fiction🤦🏾♂️👑
Man in Black was slowing the first down with his powers, so the second could catch up
You could see that the gunslinger squeezed the trigger much slower on the first shot, and squeezed it at double speed on the second shot, which changed the speed of the second round enabling it to catch the first round.
They filmed that badly but what makes sense to me is that Roland fired the ricochet first and the straight ahead second, using the ricochet to bank off of. Which means the straight ahead travelled a shorter distance enough for it to work.
After reading the books I knew I couldn't watch this. It would have pissed me off. I love Idris for the role, but it should have been a series.
POV: You matchmake with a master prestige Gunslinger that insists on only 1886 or 500. dual revolvers in a Killing Floor 2 match and the rest of the team is dead, watching him work
Haven’t seen this movie in a long time and haven’t read the books but as a kid, I loved this movie. Apparently this was a let down so I’ll read the books next
The movie basically has nothing to do with the books. It's very long and sometimes hard to follow but many consider it King's magnum opus. I'm not among them but it is still excellent.
One thing you add is that there are many references to kings previous famous books, but you can enjoy it without knowing.
The books are way better. This movie is a strange sort of exhibition of what could be in another world, but it fits nicely in a side-universe style canon.
Watch out for the first book, it's pretty wild but by the end most people fall off because it's wild, abstract and meandering - the 2nd book opens and it immediately snaps to being more grounded in a good way, and you appreciate what the first book really was more in hindsight. I read the first book then waited 10 years to start the 2nd, after reading the 2nd I read the whole series.
But they're awe inspiring. If I'd never read the books this movie would've been "ok" but it's a letdown only because of what the source material is and how they sort of teased that in the trailers - they didn't "get it" likely until the end of the film, when they realized that rapid spill load earlier in the film was the most Roland thing in the entire film. They went too over the top without earning it. By the time you see characters wielding guns in the books, you know not only what they can do - but what forces steady their hand, and why... and it adds a lot more.
Good luck with the books, they're a great read.
This was a master class on how not to constrict a dozen novels into one film...
Best book series ever, but of course, holly wank had to fuck it up💁🤦🏼♂️
NOW THAT IS HOW YOU SUPPOSED TO SHOOT! FROM NOW ON YOU SHOOT LIKE THAT!
To everybody saying this is unfaithful, this movie is NOT meant to be an adaptation of the books, it is supposed to be a sequel to them that takes place after Roland had already been to the tower and got transported back to the Mohaine Desert with the Horn of Eld. Granted, it is not a very well thought out sequel but that is why there is no Eddie, Susannah, and things are otherwise pretty different because the premise of the movie is that Roland is making different choices this time around.

The kid has the actual power to hold back the evil, and then add on the skills of the gunman, for a time, he'd be unbeatable.
This movie is supposed to take place sometime after the last book, after the worlds "reset" due to Roland somehow once again screwing up in his quest. Supposedly part of the series continuity, while having enough changes to leave you wondering if the worlds' reboot changes the questor; as Clint Eastwood was the inspiration for Roland, and him being white was a major plot point in a couple of the books and in his relations with Susannaha/Detta, casting Idris Elba meant having to either set it after the books or as an "alternate timeline" version. It's stated that Jake has died more than once, implying that there's more than one world/timeline where the inhabitants are involved, in addition to the author confirming that other books he's written are part of the larger Dark Tower continuity, so there being more than one Roland is a possibility as well, maybe Elba-Roland is from a world closer to the core of the multiverse "onion"...
