Yes Devin really is a performer. If you are looking for fun his 'Why" is a must if you are looking for the limits of his scream his live "Deadhead" is a must. ""Grace" is like going to metal church. The choices are limitless
Deadhead screams are nothing compared to some of the SYL stuff. Still good though, no doubt.
Same goes for «Universal Flame»; metal worship… 😂
The final minute of "Ki" is dope.
@@DustyDigits His super high screams, the ones from early SYL, sound amateurish compared to what he does nowadays. And the tonal screams from City or Alien don't sound that different from his later stuff. But i do agree that Deadhead isn't the peak of what he can do
Why - Order of Magnitude Live version
Deadhead - Live in Plovdiv version
Bring Him Home - Acoustic Live version (quarantine version is good but think the "Grumpy Old Man" version is the better).
Ah-Ih - Live at Albert Hall.
Higher - Live in Plovdiv
The best thing about Devin ... he's actually super shy and is always overwhelmed with the love he gets.
Devy Townsend...HUGE, DEEP, rabbit hole! So much charisma, and song writing/ performing talent.
I love Devins troll on this video. Every time someone watches this for the first time and he gets to the "epic solo" part, everyone gets excited in anticipation, and then they get that confused look after becuase they can't decide if they were trolled or just don't understand how it was supposed to epic. 🤣 But once you get to know Devin it's just hilarious.
Was able to see him 3 times including just him doing an acoustic set. After that show my gf and I went around the back of the building and caught Devy loading his own gear. When he was done, he gave us his undivided attention for about 15 minutes and signed his book for me. He even drew a picture in it of Ziltoid and signed it again. People say don't meet your idols, Devy breaks that rule. It must be a Canadian thing.
“Deadhead” next, for sure! Live from Royal Albert Hall.
Actually: Devin loves the reaction community, and has had a few interviews by discord etc...
You find one by "the charismatic singer". She has also interviewed Tatiana of Jinjer if you want to fangirl for over an hour!
oh awesome!! I'll have to check these interviews out!! :D
Small correction, it's The Charismatic Voice. 🙂
@@MaraxisArcanist ah... yeah you're right... got a little shit to the brain for a moment 😁😆
Funeral, Bastard , and The Death of Music live at Royal Albert Hall is a must-hear to discover his voice potential.
The holy Trinity! 😇🙏
Any of these just no more Deadhead please
Oh yes! @Aileesenpai if you can, and have the time for a long video, please do all three of these songs together. It's genuinely magnificent. ua-cam.com/video/1oJEBGHCdBQ/v-deo.html Not many reactors have done this but I think you'll be blown away. :)
Oooh, I dunno.
I prefer Death of music from the Plovdiv set. I’d also add Higher into that list as well!
@@chrishenwood1 That Plovdiv set was incredible. #NoCap
This is an absurdly good song. His range is incredible!
LOVED it sooo much!!! We need more Devy!
Not only vocally... but musically as well. His catalog is EXTREMELY widely ranged. From a little country to edm to ambient to BRUTAL metal. The guy is prolific and talented. A good combo.
@@AileenSenpai Try "Genesis" or "Why"
I love Devy but I'm always sad hardly anyone ever checks out his old band, Strapping Young Lad. His vocals are still top notch, though it's generally much much heavier, and they have the god-tier atomic clock Gene Hoglan on drums.
YES YES! SYL FOREVER!
My fave song from SYL is Love? It is the most rememberable for me
SYL is legendary and classic.
Their cover of Room 429 is burned into my brain forever. Love it.
RIP SYL. Seen them many times live. Will never forget.
Probably the best male voice in metal, for three decades now. And yes, definitely check out his performance of "Deadhead" at the Royal Albert Hall: ua-cam.com/video/DrDM6V08wcE/v-deo.html
Easily one of the best vocalists the world has seen. Ever. The man is insane. And what's even crazier is the man hates singing. 🤣
That spot is taken by the mighty Mike Patton. No one can do what that man can.
@@bongzilla4172 Touchè. Patton has pipes. But I still wouldn't hesitate to put my money on Devin.
Craziest part of that whole show was he was sick and managed to sing that well. Death of Music. It will freaking give you chills.
@@an0ana Agreed... Every. Damn. Time. Absolutely insane vocal performance. The man is akin to godliness.
DEVIN❤️ I'm sure you're gonna love his performance of "Why" from his quarantine concert😉
Oh. She absolutely has to hear Why - Quarantine Edition.
In the 90s Davin was in a band with Steve Vai in the band Vai check out the song down deep into the pain I think that’s the first video Devin. That song is awesome.
The song Deadhead, live in Royal Albert Hall (I think) is amazing! Please react to that. He also had some UA-cam concerts during the pandemic that are great. Much love!
Saw him last Friday. He's an utter god. That is all.
Devin is definitely a performance front man
He's like the Jim Carrey of metal
Always goofing around and making silly faces
love that! Jim Carrey of Metal. so fitting!
@@AileenSenpai Canadian, like Jim.
The fact that he can be so flawless while completely fucking off is the truest testament of his immense talent.
@@brandontankersley8107 agreed 💯 percent
Jim Carrey is metal head too (or used to be)
Devin is such a nice and inspiring person. Fun fact: he also does hangout/just chatting streams on twitch occasionally: www.twitch.tv/devin_townsend
Also, his quarantine concerts were hilarious, you can check out "Why" if you want to see him doing a disney-like song: ua-cam.com/video/xsd4ZkFVOHY/v-deo.html
Deadhead Live at The Royal Albert Hall is absolutely mindblowing!
He did a great interview with Elizabeth from The Charismatic Voice.
oh awesome! I'll check it out :)
I saw him live a few months ago. He is even better live, something truly amazing and rare to see.
There is an interview with him and The Charismatic Voice where he talks about his techniques and artistic approach. :)
So stoked you got around to Devin Townsend
He's got a nice catalog to choose from
so excited to hear more!!
He has a podcast on UA-cam for every album he has made. about 1h40 per album... He is so calming and inspiring to listen to...
Devin Townsend is MY Disney princess
3:33 and there's that full factory reset that so many people hit at this moment. Bravo. Devin is an extremely rewarding rabbit hole to dive into, along with his old band Strapping Young Lad. Have fun getting into it, and keep doing what you do 🤘😎🤘
YEEEES!!!!
Deadhead royal hall concert is what most reactors go with after. Much much more of a slow paced song, but very "ambiant". IF you wanna see great stage performance + reaction with the crowd, it's a good one.
His Quarantine live show (From his living room) is pretty nice too. Really fun to watch and it's hilarious to see him control all the cameras by himself, while playing, throught a god damn video game controler hahaha.
HELL YESS!!! I'll do this one next!! Thank you so much for the recommendation! 💖💖
@@AileenSenpai no problem =) hope you'll enjoy it!
@@AileenSenpai Yes!
@@AileenSenpai I would recommend either blurring out the video if you do pick the Royal Albert Hall version (it gets blocked a lot), or pick the Plovdiv version of Deadhead, that one should be safer to react to. Bit different, still good!
If you're looking for interviews with Devin, the charismatic voice did one recently! And yes, you will want to be his friend even more after hearing him just chat and have a good time ;)
The Death of Music, Live in Plovdiv is incredibly emotional and challenging.
Devin got a Duet with Anneke Van Giersbergen where they sing "Ih ah"
such a sweet and cool song.
"Deadhead" from the Royal Albert Hall performance. There's also a clinic he did at Axe Palace where he talks about how he writes and what he's into and just random stories. He's a really funny, chill, down to earth guy it's hard not to like him.
A lot of people is gonna suggest you listen to his song Deadhead, live at the Royal Albert Hall.
You should listen to these people.
DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT - Deadhead (Live at Royal Albert Hall) - definitely a MUST watch... ;o)
Deadhead live at Royal Albert Hall. MUST WATCH.
He is the coolest dude ever, and he has an awesome vocal ability.
What really blows me away is Devins ability to transition from Fry screams, to beautiful cleans. He is such an amazing performer, musician what have you! He has really mastered his own vocal range, and the limits of his voice. That is not an easy thing to do, and takes a lot of practice trial and error.
You want to see him live... Search for almost anything from the Plovdiv concert. I might suggest "Higher" get the lyrics BTW. You want to see an interview - look for the one with the Charismatic Voice. BTW - rabbit hole - the man has 24 albums ranging from ephemeral to the heaviest of metal ever.
For his clean Vocals and goofiness check out "Devin Townsend "WHY?" (Order of Magnitude - Official Promo Video)"
For a personal in-depth interview watch tea time with Devin from Elizabeth Zharoff - super relaxed and interesting interview with him from an Opera Singer
I'm curious what you'd think of Postmodern Jukebox, if you don't already know them. They do covers, but with an old-timey twist. Their version of Radiohead's "Creep" with Haley Reinhart on vocals is still jaw-dropping after listening to it 100 times.
definitely have to check them out soon!
One of the top performances by him is "Devin Townsend - Deadhead (live at Royal Albert Hall)". I can not recommend that performance enough. If you were impressed by this... let's just say, it's amazing. Truly amazing. You NEED to see, hear and experience it.
Also, Devin is indeed a great guy. I had wings with him after one of his shows. Down to earth, lots of fun, and charming in person as well.
Devin Townsend Project - Love (The Retinal Circus Live) (it's actually a Strapping Young Lad song)
DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT - Deadhead (Live at Royal Albert Hall)
These two are musts
This was great.
I love watching people discover Devy.
I hope you do more.
There's some great suggestions here!
Devy began his career right out of high school as the vocalist for Steve Vai's band. It didn't take long before he grew disillusioned with the music industry though. So he quit his job, moved back home to Canada, and founded a new band that would be as brutal, angry and non-commercial as he could make it. He called his new band Strapping Young Lad.
But his anger eventually got the best of him. He began drinking heavily, abusing psychotropics and using copious amounts of drugs. It messed with his head to the point where he finally had a breakdown and quit the band for fear he would kill himself.
Once again he moved back home, started a family, got his act together and focused on a new kind of music that would be experimental, but positive and affirming. Hence was born the Devin Townsend Project. Some time later he shortened it to just Devin Townsend. He produces, writes and records all the music himself with the assistance of guest musicians whom he himself hires. Today he is one of the kindest and most respected artists in the industry.
He is also co vocalist for an absolutely incredible, folksy country music side project called Casualties of Cool. I encourage you to check out their song "Mountain Top".
Heavy Devy shouts and screams his way into another reactors heart. Should check out Quarantine version of WHY and Deadhead live.
Devin Townsend - Deadhead (Royal albert hall or live plovdiv) have some insane screams, strongly suggesting.
Glad you enjoyed Devi! He is an incredible person, one of the nicest and truthful people around - I've seen him live too many times, and every time I leave the show happier than I arrived. Can't sing his praise enough.
He also has an ocean of music, very vast and different and not just metal - Casualties of Cool is a very relaxed album.
I can't leave without suggesting my favourite song, Deadhead (specifically Royal Albert Hall is my favourite), but he's got a lot of great songs. I don't see a ton of reactions to a few other songs of his from that concert: Funeral, Bastard or Death of Music.
Heck, for something rather different the Ziltoid album is a combo of great metal music and a hilarious concept.
actually, he's done a few concerts on UA-cam during the lock down that are also great fun to watch. He's hooked up an xbox controller so he can switch between cameras, as well as a few other fun at home tricks! I think there's even a clip of him doing a song from a musical, and of course the song Why, which is pretty close to a Disney musical
"Deadhead" at the royal Albert hall is a great full live performance with a full band.
Yes, I agree with Evilynn and others that Dead Head Live at Royal Albert Hall is a wonderful next video and live performance. Also, his pandemic performance of Why during live stream I know you will adore as well and get more insight into Devin and his whimsically positive nature.
For more about Devin and how he sings, watch his interview with Elizabeth at @TheCharismaticVoice. She spoke with him for about 90 minutes on his singing and techniques.
I think he really pushes his vocals the most in the song The Death of Music, its out of this world .great reaction .
I'm happy that you have reacted to him. Hes been in a few bands, mostly Strapping Young Lad. He also has like 20ish albums altogether and is an multi-instrumentalist. Hes talented on a different level.
Hell yeah Heavy Devy! My favorite musical artist. He has over 20 studio albums to his career in a variety of different genres and styles. He's a fucking beast. Highly recommend Deadhead Live at Royal Albert Hall for your next Devin reaction. It's so good.
Why? from his Quarantine show
Deadhead live from Royal Albert Hall
Higher Live in Plovdiv
These are amazing performances by Mr. Devin Townsend
I'll let you in on a little secret, Aileen. You can literally pick just about any random song from any Devin / SYL / CoC album and you will get a ton of views because the Devin fans absolutely devour any Devin reaction content. It's just a joy to watch people experiencing him for the first time or just getting their toes wet with his catalog. You do not have to pick one of the same 5 songs that a billion other reaction channels have done. Be brave, pick something that isn't recommended to you in the comments or that doesn't come up immediately when searching for "Devin Townsend reaction." We'll still watch it, and 9 out of 10 of us will appreciate the freshness.
I will never tire of people reacting to this video.
Dead head is phenomenal live
Devin Townsend is terrific. Glad you enjoyed it and a lovely reaction, as usual.
You would LOVE his song ' WHY? ' in his home live quarantine show !!
"Deadhead" Amazing live
If you go back to his first couple of bands and listen to his voice evolve over time, it just keeps getting better and better. Most singers have to compensate for damage the longer they sing, especially with the harsh fry screams. Devin just continues to amaze!
I don't know if anyone else in these comments mentioned it, but Devin has a great interview on The Charismatic Voice (funnily enough, the reaction channel where I initially discovered him after Elizabeth reacted to this same performance). That's worth a check. Devin also has some podcasts he's done in which he describes his musical inspirations, emotions, though process, etc. as he was writing various songs/albums, though I suspect you may have already learned about that after checking his channel.
Anyway, I know I'm late to the party, but oh well 🤷♂️😅
I adore watching people unlocking the DLC for the soul that is Devin Townsend. 💕
Fascinating man with a pretty tragic story regarding addiction and mental illness. Might look into his previous band Strapping Young Lad. Straight up metal.
So many songs across the boarders range of music a musician has ever ventured . Grace live is stunning, Why in lockdown is adventurous , ih-ah live is beautiful, the list goes on .Two that you may love also are mountain top & flight (the female singer in these two songs , looks a lot like you)
You have opened up a whole new world of pure and amazing talent for yourself with devin
Had the pleasure of meeting him in person and seeing him live twice. That's totally him 100%
Great reaction
Most people are going to recommend you watch Deadhead, and although it's a fantastic song and he once more displays excellent vocal skills there, I'd go with something that not many other reactors have done. Deep Peace of the By a Thread series is a fantastic video to react to when it comes to his personality on stage. I really love how he interacts with the audience in such a genuine way. And this one also has the most epic (beautiful really) guitar solo in history; this time for real though :3
A live performance that shows off his stage presence is pretty much every live performance he has given.
There are so many amazing performances depending on what kind of experience you want to have.
Some of his most moving performances for me are when he does an acoustic performance. Most of his songs are made to be full of vocal harmonies, guitars and synthesisers, so hearing him adapt a song to purely acoustic is really beautiful.
For me, my recommendation is a tie between his acoustic performance of Funeral for CBC Music and his acoustic performance of Bring Him Home from Les Miserables live in Auckland, New Zealand.
For non-acoustic, it has to be the triple of Funeral, Bastard and Death of Music at the Royal Albert Hall. This version of Funeral is much closer to the original, but I really prefer the acousic version for its impact.
Devin's vocal abilities are largely self-taught. Unfortunately, that means that most of what he's able to do is a result of force-of-will. He's spoken often about how his technique is to hammer his voice until it's shot, then take a break before going again. I would love to see him refine his technique and learn how to take better care of his voice, but I don't think he could do it any other way now.
Devin is releasing a double album in a few months time that is going to be super strange (according to him). Keep an eye out for that.
Devin’s early band, Strapping Young Lads and their song Love, is worth a listen
Hevy Devy never gets old man. Such a unique talent.
'Literal perfection...ok'. Best description of Devy!
Devi is such a loveable goofball and an incredible performer. The best of both worlds!
Devin Townsend - Why / Quarantine Show is a good one he did a live show to raise money for hospitals from his home
what an awesome guy...talented and a great person!
You're right. And, he actually did two other shows to benefit hospitals in Britain and the USA! A great human being.
Devin is always surprising with his performances, he is the trickster of metal, his sense of humour and fun is infectious, he can lull you to slepp with the heaviest songs then terrify you with a lullaby, I love most of the stuff he has recorded over the years and have been following his journey since the mid 90s, Devin never disapoints
Thanks so much for getting round to Devin. His musical variation is amazing. Check out 'Grace' official live video where he sings with Anneke Van Giersbergen, it's wonderful ! Enjoy !!
As she does here. But I wish Aileen would have treated herself to the full version from The Retinal Circus, instead of "Anneke-in-the-Box". 😢
Is a treat to see Devin and the rest of the band members on stage. Ryan on drums is a beast. Check out Deadhead live at Royal Albert Hall. 🙂
This is Devin's world and we're all living in it.
The BEST fry scream in music history is performed by Devin Townsend in Deadhead in Royal Albert Hall.
Oh my gosh, you are amazing. I love your energy. Awesome reaction.
Awesome reaction and enjoy your journey through devins music. Spirits will collide is an amazing song that I'd love to see you react to!
I'm not even into dudes but Devin's voice still gives me the vapors. Had to pause the video to turn my fan on to cool me down. Lol
Deadhead Live In Royal Albert Hall👌
I saw him 2003, i'm a huge fan, and yeah, on stage his presence is magnetic and he is also a killer guitarist
Devin always touches my feels with this performance.
To explain how he controls his voice and reaches those really high notes in his very own words: "sheer force of f****ing will"
Another great under recognized vocalist is Einar from the band Leprous, check out their track Below or their live performance of Slave
Welcome to King Charisma :) You should also check out the "Retinal Circus" live version with the full band and Anneke van Giersbergen on backing vocals, then "Grace" from the same concert.
If you want an interview displaying his musical talents, go watch the video "Devin Townsend Blows Our Tiny Minds - That Pedal Show". He is truly an amazing musician.
I always suggest March of the Poozers at the Royal Albert Hall.
'DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT - Deadhead (Live at Royal Albert Hall)' is a good song to see him live
I saw Devin back in 2004 in a small club with only 15 people at the show with sympathy x headlining.
"Slave" by Leprous - Live at Rockefeller Music Hall.
You won't regret it.
Devi made an intervju with the Elizabeth "The Charismatic Voice" where he talked about his singing so you might wanna check that out if you want to know more about his his vocal technique..... I did not watch the whole thing but at least enough to hear him say that he was coughing blood after a concert.... that does not sound healthy at all
If you want another incredible metal singer who does a crazy mix of clean and harsh vocals with elaborate compositions, check out Wintersun's "Time" Sonic Pump Studio session. Wintersun's original drummer is the current Nightwish drummer, and their bassist is the current touring bassist with Nightwish.
You gotta listen to Strapping Young Lad, Devin has some of the best metal screams! In my opinion lol Detox or Almost Again are two great songs or of course Love? is another
IDK what was the exact concert, but once I saw a Strapping Young Lad concert and the crowd was cheering and Devin was like: *looks around at the crowd* "You love us... You really, really love us! ...how unfortunate for your sense of taste..."
The "greatest solo gag"... they either get it or they don't.
The song "Grace" from (The Retinal Circus) Official Promo Video is a must.
The solo was hillarious, people that don't realize he's trolling them make it better.
It's not like negative trolling, it's like he's in on the joke, lol!
Finally Devin! ;)
about time!! ;)
That guy's intense for sure. Great review: )
