That was my situation last year. In all my 20+ years, I have taught all K- middle school grades except 5th grade on purpose. (In my previous district, all 5th graders went to overnight camp and had THREE state tests. No thank you.) However, it's what I've taught this year. That was a traumatic age for me with death, loss, and hormones. This year was similar, death, loss, and hormones. But my students and I made it through successfully. They made big gains. I'm proud of them. I'm proud of myself. I'm proud of us.

Oh wow, Danielle, that sounds like quite the ordeal! Your students were lucky to have you to guide them through such a significant time in their lives. I’m looking forward to the (somewhat) new age group for me. Here’s to 5th grade! 🥰

@The Time-Crunched Teacher Yep. I guess we'll both be teaching the Class of 2031. I'm making a banner for next year that says, "Welcome to 5th Grade, Class of 2031. 'School Name' proud sponsors of your future!"😀

Oh thank you! I’m pretty sure I got it at Michael’s (yes, the craft store) during Pride month. But I bet you could find similar designs out there. Yay for 5th grade! You’re going to love it! 🥰

How much choice do you have about what grade you teach as a teacher with a multiple subject credential?

Great question! That really depends on the school and district. Our admin asks for our input, but ultimately our placement is determined by student enrollment and need. Technically, I am licensed in the state of California to teach Kinder through 12th grade, but I prefer to teach somewhere between 2nd and 6th. This year we had a greater need for bilingual teachers in 2nd (which I am not), so I elected to go to 5th grade. Hope that answers your question! 😊

@@TheTimeCrunchedTeacher I'm doing my msc in CA right now, student teaching this coming year, and I really want to teach kinder but would be comfortable up till 2nd if I had to... I'm just worried that I may not end up having a choice? I don't know...

Yeah, it really depends on your district and need. However, teachers in CA are in high demand right now. I did my student teaching in kinder and 3rd grade and ended up loving 6th! So feel free to "shop around" a bit and you might be surprised what you end up liking. Keep me posted on your placement!
