  • The Harley Davidson Softail Slim is, decidedly, an instant classic with timeless lines and a fast growing following of devoted fans; therefore, picking a windshield for the Softail Slim required the expert assistance of a Harley Expert who pointed Modern Bounty Hunter Rex Venator to the Memphis Shades Rio Grande and accompanying Trigger Lock Mount.
Rex is known for being hardcore truthful and fiercely guarding his hard won reputation to the extent that he will not go on the record about a product or service and espouse opinions that are not what he believes, based on his own personal experience, to be true to the best of his knowledge.
One of the hardest things for longtime Harley owner and rider, Rex, was to finally break down and, for the first time, try a wind deflector, and Rex is happy with his decision to install the Rio Grande Windshield from Memphis Shades.

You're welcome, and I know all about going back and forth trying to make things work on motorcycles. I had such a tough time that I thought to share what did work.

    Good observations, aw3212.
The 17" in combination with the solo seat (which raises the rider slightly) puts the windshield about center nose resulting in perfect wind deflection.
I took my first [with a windshield] cold night ride a few days ago and was very surprised at how much more comfortable the ride was.
    Enjoy and Be Safe.

Rex, I finally picked up the needed parts and mounted my windshield today, I went with the RIO Grande and I love it, what a difference it makes, and yet it is so minimalist that it doesn't take away from the bike too much. I wish I could upload a photo here for you.

Thank you for your replies Rex. I bit the bullet and purchased the MS black gradient. But I got the Del Rio as I am slightly "height challenged". Still uses the same trigger mount that you referenced. Fits perfect and makes a world of difference. Oddly enough, I did call Memphis shades and they would not confirm if it would fit my Slim. Even odder, which helped me make my decision is the "Motorcycle Superstore" confirms that this shield/trigger mount does in fact fit my 2013 Slim!

I am glad it is working for you. Frankly speaking, I think the whole wind deflector is thing is astounding. Meanwhile, I roll my secret project that has no windshield for that blast of wind upon the face.

Thanks for your constructive feedback flojo473.
Frankly speaking, now that I’ve been out and about with the Rio Grande, I wonder why I never thought to incorporate a windshield while riding before.
Bug splatter on my leather jackets has decreased, and my helmet options have increased; it is a win-win!

One last thing, make sure to get the right size windshield. The Del Rio is shorter. The profiled slim has the Solo Seat which raises the rider about an inch or so. Also the bike shown has stock risers.

I suggest ringing Memphis Shades just to confirm that the Rio Grande will fit; however, with Trigger Lock Mount 2320-0071, the Rio Grande as shown slips right on, locks right up, and pops right off. I'll be ordering a back-up Rio Grande here shortly. Nonetheless, it still may be a good idea to call, and it may help to reference this video so all parties are on the same page. Hope this helps.

Hello Rex. Just letting you know that I like watching your videos and I love your bike. I can say that because I have a softail slim myself and enjoy it immensely. When it comes to windshields I preferred buying the king windshield from the dealer as that's just my preference. I also have the passing lights which I'm not sure yours allows for. Keep up the vids, I love em!

I appreciate your feedback and taking the time to view the video.
The Trigger Lock Mount kit for the 2013 Softail Slim from Memphis Shades should be 2320-0071 and comes with the mounting brackets. The mounting brackets stay on, look good, but are only bolted on with easy removal if desired.
My Slim has the Solo seat, which raises me an inch or so higher, an inch or so forward, may require a different windshield than the Del Ray. It depends also on how tall you are for sizing. Good Luck!

  • @RexVenator

Yes, the above is the part number for the Trigger Mounts on the profiled HD Slim.

  • @RexVenator

I appreciate that you took the time to view the video and make the query. The Memphis Shades “Rio Grande” mounts onto a Trigger Lock Mount (2320-0071) that is very simply bolted onto the sides of the forks. The Rio Grande can be adjusted to ride forwards and backwards. I suggest calling Memphis Shades and asking about your handlebars, however, to make sure nothing will conflict. Stay Safe and feel free to share your findings ~ Rex

This is great information, my question is: Will the 2013 Del Rio fit the 2014 Slim? Just picked mine up on Friday, needing a shield quick! Also MS has not updated their site and list nothing available for this model, I don't want to go with the HD-King, don't like the look at all - thanks

    • @RexVenator
      @RexVenator  10 років тому

Denise, thank you watching and sharing your question. Unfortunately, MS customer service is reportedly still telling callers that it never did make a windshield for the Softail Slim shown not to be the case in this video, so I can't answer the question. Perhaps it be worthwhile to visit your HD dealer and kick up your 2014 next to a 2013 for the eyeball test?
      Stay Safe,
      Rex

thanks for your message, I did contact my HD dealer and called Memphis Shades. Shields that will fit the Fat Boy Low w/o the light bar will fit the Slim. (but best to check with dealer and MS to double-check) I ordered one in gradient black and it is awesome, the research paid off ~ Ride safe ~ Denise

I've received a few past and recent messages wherein people report being told by Memphis Shades' customer support that it doesn't make the profiled products for the Harley Davidson Softail Slim; therefore, people refer Memphis Shades to this video and the specific part numbers for the windshield and trigger locks listed in earlier replies to comments below. I hope this helps ~ Rex

I'm in the same place you were in, I really really don't want a windshield, but I know that I should get one. I like this windshield you have, it's really slick and not massive like some of the other ones I've seen. I wonder if these will work with 16" ape hangers??

I decided to go with the Memphis Shades Batwing. Memphis Shades does not have a particular part number for the Slim but, if you order the parts for a Fatboy, Softail Custom without a light bar. I still have the stock seat. Will the saddlebags you have work with a stock seat and stock exhaust. I am however, getting ready to switch to the Vance & Hines Big Radius 2 into 2 exhaust.

Thanks for the comment, Steve. FYI ~ the Rio Grande as profiled fit with Trigger Lock Mount Part Number 2320-0071. See the above comments for how this worked for other people; nevertheless, I look forward to seeing a video on what your set up looks like :-)

    Hey Rex
Really enjoyed your very informative video. I have a 2013 softail slim and plan to order the windshield from Memphis Shades. I have the foward SE air cleaner on my nighster and plan to add one to the slim. I have been researching exhaust pipes to go with the enhanced air flow and was wondering what pipes you have on your bike (they look great)?
Again, great info - thanks for posting it.

Thanks for taking a few moments to watch this video, Mike.
Try a UA-cam search for - softail slim 204 cams - and the differences between exhaust setups for the Softail Slim are demonstrated with the profiled bike in this video.
You will hear it stock, with a Stage 1 and Screamin Eagle Slip-ons, and then check out the sound with the Heavy Breather, Screamin Eagle 204 Cams and Vance and Hines Big Shots Longs pipes that are on the bike in this video.
I think you may very well find it all rather interesting.
Hope this helps, and ride safe.

Also, Not sure if I need one this high, would you know if the Del Ray would work with this trigger mount on same bike? (2013 FLS Slim). Thanks in advance.

Thanks for this vid. I have been struggling with the same thing, windshield or no windshield. I am going to order mine today. Question Rex. Where did you get the round toolbag that is behind your seat? Also, how is it mounted? Thanks Again!

    • @RexVenator
      @RexVenator  10 років тому

I appreciate that you took the time to watch the video and comment, Paul.
Search for the video “Softail Slim Throw Over Saddlebags No Relocation Kits,” and there is a close-up of the handmade tool bag by the Leatherworks out of Stockton, California. This is the same company that custom made the profiled “Pony Express” saddlebags.
You’ll be able to see the Solo seat and its springs with the profile shot; the tool bag, which is handmade and high-end, quality, is shown on the handlebars.
The standards handlebar straps of the tool bag are simply strung through the spring hoops and tightened down. The tool bag and saddlebags are all stamped as well for that personal look.
      Hope this helps,
      Rex

      Good morning, Ryan.
I swapped out the standard lamp for a Harley-Davidson Daymaker LED, which made a
remarkable difference in nighttime riding visibility and also being seen by
      inattentive drivers during daytime hours.
They were about $700.00 at the time but are now in the low $500.00 range.
I personally think the safety value absolutely justifies the expense.
      Shiny Side Up,
