I use my slate to white balance my video also. Works great. Then notes on the other side for dive briefs.

The best cheap underwater writing instrument I've found is the Pilot Croquis 6B. Thick, refillable, and easily retractible, so I don't have to worry about snapping the pencil body in a pocket.

Wish this episode came out earlier this year. I bought a Slate from Amazon. Came with a Wooden Pencil. I swim in a Lap Pool. And needed something to keep track of my Laps. It sat on the Pool Deck mostly. Just getting splashed. In about a week it Split and lost the Graphite in the grating. I Clean mine using a Green Scrubber and some GoJo Mechanic Hand Cleaner. Tried a bottle of Slate/Mask Cleaner. Smells like a "Stink Bug". Works ok. Not as good as the Orange Gojo with Pumice

If you think you need a slate, you probably don't. You will know when you need a slate.
